(03:59):
Blues teammate thirty six Test loose forward Dalton Papa Lie.
All Black's assistant coach Jason Ryan joins us on Sports Talk.
Thanks for your time, Jason. Congratulations to you and the
coaching group on unveiling your first All Black squad of
the year in general terms, First of all, how happy
are you with the squad that you have assembled?

Speaker 4 (04:20):
Yeah, thanks for that. Look, it's an absolute privilege to
name an All Black team, and we've got there after
a number of robust conversations and a lot of due
diligence and around players and their craft and also characters.
So we're really excited by the squad we've got with
believe it's got a good balance across the board, power, acceleration,

(04:42):
experience and youth.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
Over what positions did you have the most robust discussions?

Speaker 4 (04:48):
I think the loose forwards. You know, when you look
at traditional All Black teams that have been announced, that's
always a tasty one around a how many, what is
the combination and who are the you know, who's got
the point of difference and skill sets that will require.
So there was healthy right to end Hurricanes.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
Lucy do Pli is there in a very competitive position.
What gave him the edge?

Speaker 4 (05:14):
He's earned the right. I think it's a real success
story for Dups. I think he first came into the
All Blacks in twenty twenty and where he is now
around his game and himself as a man, I think
is a real credit to him. He's stuck at it.
He's stuck at it. He's been probably one that's been
talked about for a few years and this year he's
completely earned the right and I think it's a real

(05:35):
credit to him. He's you know, he's led the Lions
Wellington and also the Hurricanes and it's brought the best
out of them. So it's our job to get him
to the next level and Test level, but we think
it'd be pretty seamless for him.

Speaker 2 (05:46):
I can ask you about the other debutantes in the forwards,
Jase Chiefs front rowers, Ollie Norris and Brody McAllister earned
call ups. What have you seen in them?

Speaker 4 (05:55):
Oli Norris been really consistent for his whole season. He's
he's a big ball carrier, very accurate defender and it's
a chance chance for us to have a look at
a younger lu said in this series against the French,
So I think he's you know, he's learning his craft too,
and he's a big body who's an exclus forward, so

(06:16):
gives us mobility around the park. Brody's really earned it.
He's he's a big scrummager. He's he was in the
All Black fifteen last year. He came in and trained
with us when we're in Ireland. So we've got a
good look at him at this level and we believe
he's ready as well. And and purely just because he's
been consistent for a whole season, I know that sometimes
semis and finals when we're selecting teams do have something

(06:40):
to do as well, but we believe he's really earned
the right.

Speaker 2 (06:42):
Brody and Highland is Lock Fabian Holland is in the
squad for the first time, big lump of a lad.
What are your hopes for him?

Speaker 4 (06:50):
Oh? Mate, he's he's he's going to be special. I
think he's I love the way he competes, he loves
being in the contest with the ball, all without the ball.
He's always there. You know the Highland is he was
a big part of them and he's probably one of
the most consistent and dominant lockefwards in the competition all year.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
You mentioned due diligence before, Jase. You know, we can
all see a player in the eighty minutes on the
grass and what they bring. What does that Due diligence
regarding character and readiness for an all Black jersey consist
of when you're doing when you're doing those background checks.

Speaker 4 (07:23):
If you like. Yeah, look, we're going to trust our
eye as coaches, and we've got to. You've got to.
You've got to trust your gut feeld on a few
things as well. But I guess in my area I've
probably said this a few times, but I really value
the relationship I've got with the Fords coaches and the
Super Rugby franchises, they have the boys a lot longer
than I do. So we're going to make sure that

(07:44):
you know where are they mentally and and and what
maybe puts them under pressure and how do they handle it.
So that's sort of homework off fields, probably more important
than the off field, so that they can come in
and be ready for test rugby, you know, and and
enjoy it.

Speaker 2 (08:00):
How difficult are the conversations with the players who are
close but have just missed out. I look at a
guy like Ethan black Add who you know, we all
saw what he can do on Saturday night in christ
How challenging are those conversations.

Speaker 4 (08:12):
Although you know they're not nice and and and you
know the boss makes those the big calls to them individually.
And then we put together a bit of a care
package as selectors with me and Scotty and the rest
of the coaches, and we will give them stuff to
work on. And you know, hard conversations don't need to
be hard conversations if you're just really honest with them,
and you know some of them were connected during the year.

(08:34):
And it's all about picking the best team and the
best all black team and it shouldn't be easy, and it's.

Speaker 2 (08:40):
Not bet which number are we most likely to see
Ardie Savia where this year.

Speaker 4 (08:47):
I think he's proven himself as pretty phenomenal seven, isn't he?
So what that combination looks like with him and our
ates and and his obviously as versatilely to see as versatilely,
the cover eight and seven is a good one. Look
what is the number one position that we're thinking at
the moment when we get our line out together and

(09:07):
the boys all assembled and have a look at some
compos will answer that, but we're pretty clear and confident
that he can cover both.

Speaker 2 (09:14):
And presumably you'll have some loose board cover and the
locks as well. Scott Barrett, we know has played loose
forward to Paul Vai. Is he also, you know, a
loose forward cover type of player.

Speaker 4 (09:25):
Yeah, he is, And you're right like both those locks
can cover six and both big men and are athletic troops.
Has played six for a number a couple of years
for the Chiefs early on, played there a little bit
school and you've got no doubt in that skill set,
So you know you need you need to be able
to win the aerial battle at lineout time, and you know,
Sammerpenny female is really good in that space and we

(09:46):
felt that, you know, he's got a little bit of
accuracy that will work on which which will help him
with and but yeah, he's been performed over all pretty well.
And you know he was in the All Blacks last year.
He had an exceptional week training with us building up
into the French game in Paris until he got knocked
out in the early stages. So you know, we believe
he's still still deserves to stay there and get better.

Speaker 2 (10:10):
So how excited are you as a coaching group now
to get your hands on these players? You about to
watch eighteen weeks of Super rugby probably licking your lips.
How excited are you to get your hands on your players?

Speaker 4 (10:19):
Yeah, it's good, but it's just really important. It's a
fine line between flooding with information and stuff they don't
really need. But we know they can play. We just
got to keep them fresh and sharp, and we've got
to bring them together as a team and we've got
to grow each other, grow our culture. You know, we've
got a pretty cool day lined up with our leadership
group when the boys assemble and understand what it is

(10:40):
to be an All Black and the standards that are
required to be an All Black, and then what do
we want to be as a team. So we'll go
through all that and first and once to identify that.
Then we'll put a game together to have a credit France.

Speaker 2 (10:54):
Can't wait just to finish Jas. I know you're supposed
to be neutral now, but how much did you enjoy
watching your old team Windn't Super Rugby on Saturday night
in christ Jurch.

Speaker 4 (11:02):
I just enjoyed the contest. I think there's been there's
been some good content in the final series. I think
the competition shifted from the start of year where it
was fast and hot weather and warm and quick. But
as we got close to the end of the season,
I think there's thirty five scrumpy on these in the
final series, so that's still going to be a pretty

(11:25):
critical part of our game to get right.

Speaker 2 (11:27):
Congratulations again on the squad, Jas, thanks for chatting mate.
We'll see you in Dunedin.

Speaker 4 (11:31):
No worries. Thanks to call cheers.

Speaker 2 (11:33):
Thank you for taking it. Jason, Jason Ryan. They're assistant
coach of the All Blacks of course, or one of here.
On Sports Talk seven eighteen, your thoughts and courage now
on the squad name today? Oh eight hundred eighty ten eighty.
You've had seven hours or so to mull it over,
to chat about it with friends, family, and your rugby fraternity.

(11:54):
What are the main takeaways for you? What springs to
mind when you think about when you think about the squad,
there are normally two main talking points. I think when
all Black squads are named, the new faces and those
who missed out, Today is without doubt a fantastic day
for Tamothi Tavatavanawai, duplasy Kadifi, Fabian Holland, Ollie Norris and

(12:15):
Brody McAllister named in the All Blacks for the first time.
And Crusader's number eight, Christian Leo Willy. I think we
can add him in as well. He's there as injury
cover for Luke Jacobson and will surely get his chance
at some stage when the squad size increases from thirty
three at the moment to thirty five or thirty six
for the Rugby Championship and at least that many for

(12:36):
the end of year tour as well. Because history tells
us that several players who weren't named today will play
for the All Blacks this year. Last year, forty two
players played for the All Blacks in twenty twenty three,
thirty nine in twenty twenty two, to forty four players
and forty two in twenty twenty one. There are always

(12:57):
injuries and players returning from injury. I mean, five players
who wore the black jersey last year weren't considered for
this squad because current injury are suffer amore off of
tool the Fussy, Sam Dowry, Peter Lakeye and Stephen Petafetta,
and two others as mentioned Luke Jacobson and Antonin Lennart
Brown have been named while carrying injuries. But there are

(13:21):
without doubt players who have had very good super rugby
seasons and or players who have been All Blacks before
who will have been disappointed, very disappointed to not hear
their names read out today. It's even possible to come
up with a pretty decent team of players who aren't
in this squad. I've done that actually, So here it

(13:42):
is Josh for Stuur, George bell Angus Tarvo in the
front row, Josh Lord natoah Akoy the locks Ethan Blackadda Dalton,
Papolee and Hoskins, Setutu the Lucis for Lake Christi and Rivers,
Rayhanna in the halves, David Harveli, Braden Enall in the centers,
Leroy Carter, Mark Talaia, Shawn Stephenson the back three. That

(14:05):
is a team of players who weren't named today, and
that team would compete pretty well against, if not beat,
many of our top international sites. That's the nature of
the All Blacks. Good players miss out, so who's been
unluckiest for you? We can always have a crack at
naming the starting side for the first Test in twelve

(14:26):
days time. The contentious positions probably the loose forwards, midfield
and the back three. Might have some thoughts on that
as well. Plenty to chew over oh eight one hundred
and eighty ten eighty nine, two ninety two on text.
Always lost to chat about when an All Black squad's name.
So let's get stuck in. It's seven twenty one, Graham.

(14:48):
I know you'll be pleased about the result on Saturday night.
We chatted about that yesterday, didn't we But you'll be disappointed.
You'll be disappointed at the o mission of a couple
of your championship winning crusaders, no doubt.

Speaker 5 (15:00):
Yeah, one of them particularly, well, you know I would
have I'm pleased, but I'll say this, I'll please time
with no wis been in fact the Islanders back. But
I was just probably David Avel he wasn't there because
he's played a lot more rugby than probably did last
year and played well. But Ethan Blackader, I was genuinely Yeah,
I suppose that was the shock. Yeah, give him the

(15:22):
fact he played more than he did last year and
played as usual with high standards and went above and
beyond in the final on Saturday. But yeah, yeah, that's
just the way it is. Yeah, that was very disappointed.
George bow I think Norris I've gone with a younger guy,
so I haven't a look at him. That's probably seems

(15:43):
to be the rationale. I mean, I don't know a
lot about the top level, you know, front rows like
Jason Ryan does. But yeah, George Bauer was unlucky that
they've obviously gone with a younger player, which that seems to.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
Yeah, Ethan Blackhead is the one for me, grime. I was, Yeah,
I astonished to see him not there, particularly given as
you pointed out the fact he's actually you know, he's
because he's been afflicted by injuries, hasn't he But he's
been playing quite regularly recently. He was terrific on Saturday night.
I know it's only one game, but I just watched
him out there on Saturday night. I thought, man, that
guy's getting named on on Monday, and they've only named five.

(16:18):
They've only named five loose forwards. I get the feeling
he would have been number six. And Razor even said
that he's very close and will be in and around
the All Blacks this year. Look, I don't think there's
no need doubt that Ethan Blackaddam will play for the
All Blacks this year. The other one's interesting is David Hartville. Yeah,
David HARVILLI you talk to anyone in that Crusader squad
and they revere that guy, They absolutely love him. And

(16:39):
they've named six midfielders Graham and he's not one of them.
So you can't tell me that David Avilli is the
seventh best midfield back in the country.

Speaker 5 (16:49):
No, that's right. I mean, he was a surprised selection
as captain. But when when you spoke to people and
and and and the proofs and the putting that you know,
he led the team, not single handedly, but he did
a great job as captain. And you know, Cody Taylor
was probably a popular choice, but he had a great
leadership team including Cody around him. But David Avili, yeah,

(17:13):
that that reverence for him and that squad. I agree.
When he got it, I was, you know, I was
like converted straight away, I should see right, okay. And
he took to it by come to a duck to
water too, because he's quite a quietish guy. But he
you know, he don't need to be a yeah to
be a captain. So here I know he is while
he thought of and I'm rude, you know, on your

(17:34):
Hurricane seam. I yeah, I think that's you know, I
was pleased for Carrefee too. Yeah, he's certainly been you know,
he's been playing very well.

Speaker 2 (17:44):
Yeah, I agree, Graham Moum. Yeah, look, no, I agree
with that too. And I'm biased, I know I am
around the Hurricanes players, but I honestly believe he presented
an irresistible case this year. You'reing super rugby even with
only five loose forwards. Like I say, I think you know,
Ethan Blackadder is probably the sixth one. I think the
other thing that David Harvily's owners from the squad probably

(18:08):
does is give us an indicator of the type of
rugby the All Blacks are going to play this year
and their use of the second five position. You look
at the second fives they've named Jordi Barrett, Quintupaire and
to Mothy Tavatava nah Way, all robust, berg bodied men
who are gonna take on the line and batter at

(18:30):
that line. You know, David Harvilly's a different kind of player.
He brings a different skill set. I'm not saying he's
not brave, because he is absolutely courageous, but he's just
not as big a body as the others. He's felt
and he glides, and there's a place for players like that.
The Crusaders obviously believe so. But to pire Jordi Barrett

(18:53):
and Tava Tava Nahway, I think that tells the tale
of exactly the way the All Blacks are going to
play this year. Good to Chattier Graham, I think both
will probably end up in a Black jersey at some
stages year. Certainly, I would expect that Ethan Blackadder will
Jenny says, got it for David Arvilly. His brains on
the field, defense and kicking game second to none. Ethan

(19:14):
Blackadder's determination, work, ethic and brawn is dangerous. I'm sure
the French ship pleased he's not there. I've got a
lot of disappointment for him. I feel the same, Jenny.
I was watching the news before and the Crusaders had
their victory parade today, and much as I'm sure Ethan
Blackadder and David Harvilly enjoyed it, there would have been

(19:34):
a tinge of disappointment that they don't get to join
up with a number of their teammates. Seven Crusaders I
think were named Adafvi caun't Leo Willie for the challenge
of taking on France. Oh eight hundred and eighty ten
eighties our number.

Speaker 6 (19:48):
Hello, Ellen, good evening, Darcy. Sorry Piney, Yes, Ethan Blackadder
is that's a hard one, David Harvelli. They seemed like
the like a glue and the team yep, a great.
I can't say any more than that. I'm really disappointed

(20:10):
for Eastern Blackadder, but I think what will happened, Piney,
I'll tell you honestly straight there's only one big game
this year. It's bread a slow Cup.

Speaker 2 (20:22):
What about South Africa? What about what about South Africa?
Ed Eden park Ellen, that's a big game.

Speaker 6 (20:28):
Well that's huge. Okay, so but these guys have been
actually the most the nicest thing has got a few
guys running through. Yeah, so that's massive. Piney like I'm

(20:49):
I'm I'm like Bluestot die Hard.

Speaker 2 (20:52):
You know, yep, absolutely, Ellen. Look, I think, like I said,
there's thirty three guys name today, forty players. I'm going
to estimate at least we'll wear a black jersey this year,
and I think David Harvilly may be one of them.
Ethan Blackadder definitely will be one of them, and others too.
You know, there are always injuries. You can't predict them,

(21:12):
but you can predict that there will be injuries. You
can't predict who's going to drop out, so you build depth.
The interesting part for me was they only named thirty
three today. I think they could have named up to
thirty five and they did. They I guess an effect.
They named Nadawah and Leo Willis injury cover see Lena
Brown's an interesting one.

Speaker 7 (21:29):
To me.

Speaker 2 (21:29):
I'm not sure how fit Anton Lenet Brown is. They
clearly wouldn't have named anybody in the squad who couldn't
play at least some part in the series, and there's
no point carrying an injured player. And they've left out
players five of them Armor taking the Fussy Dowry, Larkeye
and Pedifeta who clearly have no chance of playing in
the series. The ones who have been named but have
been given injury cover Leonet Brown and Jacobson clearly are

(21:54):
going to be okay to play at least a part
in the series. So interesting to see how they go.
I'll get on to the midfield at the moment. Let's
get back to the lines.

Speaker 6 (22:02):
Hello, Henry, Hey, jesus, Yes, he's black Crusading is.

Speaker 8 (22:10):
One of them?

Speaker 3 (22:12):
How was it?

Speaker 2 (22:13):
Yeah, it's a it's a good point, Henry, and and
Jason Ryan said, you know that. You know they do
take finals games into account, but they also take a
form across the season, and maybe, like I said with
HARVILLI maybe it's just an indication of the type of
rugby they're going to play. But I can't I can't
fathom eat them blackadders omission under those under that rationale,

(22:35):
because I don't care what which way you play, there's
always through him. For a raw bone bloke like Ethan Blackadder,
I reckon the time.

Speaker 8 (22:43):
It's just, you know, that's the real role of for
that guy. I mean on the Hurricanes water. But she's
that guy. You know he should be in.

Speaker 7 (22:50):
But careesy.

Speaker 8 (22:51):
I'm glad he got a you know he's done well.
But do you think this is the end of Hoskins
will do to Jason? Do you think he'll get back
at all?

Speaker 5 (22:57):
Or no?

Speaker 2 (22:58):
No, I don't think he will be I don't think
we'll see Hoskins again. I think he will probably head
off shore. And I wonder also, while we're talking about
Bluesloose forwards Henry, if it's the end for Dalton Papali
as well. You know, a great servant in New Zealand.
Rugby always felt felt like he would be a contender
to take over that seven jersey once Sam Kaine retired,
but it hasn't been the case. He broke that thumb

(23:19):
last year, which obviously didn't help. But I just wonder
whether he's dropped down that pecking order today. You know,
while I was surprised that Blackadder wasn't there, I wasn't
that surprised that Papalal wasn't there.

Speaker 4 (23:29):
If I'm honest, that's up at the top.

Speaker 6 (23:33):
Jason, that's tough the top.

Speaker 2 (23:35):
Henry, beg on, mate, it is tough at the top.
What's on your mind, Peter.

Speaker 4 (23:42):
Am I and Ryan?

Speaker 2 (23:44):
You are Peter, it's you mate, what's on your mind?

Speaker 7 (23:48):
It's about the Crusaders in the in the.

Speaker 4 (23:52):
Chiefs.

Speaker 7 (23:53):
Look. Look, oh, it's a hard decision because they were
both with teams. You know, the Crusaders had more of
attacking precision and the Crusaders were more on the defense.
You Know, what I was thinking was if the Crusaders
was to rather the defeats all the time, they surely

(24:19):
had attacked during the time the last you know, the
last twenty minutes and then the final sixty minutes. You know,
if they were to have done the at Tech game,
who said that they were there one?

Speaker 2 (24:35):
Yeah, it was a look. I've had to look back
at that game, Peter and I. The Crusaders had a
lot of territory and possession in the second half without
scoring any points. But I had to point it out
to me by a much wiser Rugby brain than mine,
that it didn't matter. They were quite happy to play
down the Chiefs end of the field, even if they
weren't piling on the points, because if they're down that end,

(24:58):
the Chiefs can't score any points. It was a Titanic battle, mate,
Thanks for your call. A couple of texts through before
we go to a break, Blackadder and Euroy Carter tough
to miss out. Thanks Trevor. I appreciate that. Marsays, I
actually agree with Graham about Blackadder. He's a beast, he
is Ethan. Blackadder is passionate, says this one, David Avery

(25:19):
is more of a midweek call Black for me. Hoskin
Stutu has class, though he's a game changer. Don't think
you'll see Hoskin Sattutu on a Black jersey again. Unfortunately,
Murray says, I'm just glad they're taking the French seriously. Well,
I don't think there was any doubt about that. And
regardless of who the All Blacks were playing, I think
they were going to name a very strong team today.
Twenty nine away from eight. Let's take a break when
we come back. One of the new faces in the squad,

(25:40):
Duplessy Khalifi, named today and will almost certainly you'd have
to think becoming All Black at some stage in the
next month or so. How did he find out? Who
did he ring first? And how's he feeling after the
announcement today? Duplessyklife is with us right after this?

Speaker 1 (25:55):
The right call is your call on Oh eight hundred
and eighty ten eighty Sports Talk. Call on your home
of Sports News Talks, EVY.

Speaker 2 (26:04):
News Talks and Sports Talk twenty five to eight. Piney's
Power rankings to be four eight. Still time for more
of your calls and feedback on the All Black squad
of eight hundred and eighty ten eighty nine two nine
two who would prefer to correspond by text? One of
the new faces, one of the five new faces in
the squad name today was Hurricanes loose forward and co
captain Duplessi Kalifi, who joins us now. Dupless see huge

(26:27):
congratulations on this. Thanks for joining us. When and how
did you find out that you'd been included and you're
to become an All Black?

Speaker 9 (26:37):
Cheers for having me on Poney Always a pleasure. I
got a call yesterday morning from Razor Yeah to congratulate
me on making making the team, and I guess the
good year so far, but you know, as we all know,
that there's a lot of work to do in front
of us, also looking forward to getting stuck into the group.

Speaker 2 (26:56):
But I guess when you hung up from Razor there
were people you needed to tell. I think your partner,
Mila might have been playing netball. I think I don't
know whether you're with you, your fano. Some nice phone
calls to for you though, after that, I'm sure, Yeah, some.

Speaker 4 (27:09):
Very nice ones. Yeah.

Speaker 9 (27:10):
I called Mela straightaway, she's getting ready for her game
against the Tactics last night.

Speaker 4 (27:15):
Then obviously that put a big smile on her face.

Speaker 9 (27:18):
And then yeah, called him and dad and a couple
of other family members and yeah, just all really special
special moments for us all. So, yeah, a lot of
proud people out there, not just for myself, but for
I guess everyone else that's named in the squad. You know,
it's you know, it's always an honor, whether it's your
first time or or fifteenth to be representing New Zealand

(27:39):
and orbits.

Speaker 2 (27:40):
What does this day mean to you? Have you been
able to process it? Can you articulate what this day
means to you?

Speaker 4 (27:48):
Oh? It means everything, you know, like.

Speaker 9 (27:53):
My Jennie's probably a little bit different to a lot
of the young boys who have been named as for
the first time. I've you know, I've been in and
around the environment a few times now, and you know,
learned so much every single time. And you know, bring
with me, Yeah, all of all of those experiences, and
all of the lessons and and all of the all
of the challenges that have come my way over the

(28:13):
last you know, seven or eight years. Yeah, and I
know that in front of me there's still so much
more for me to learn. But I guess today is
just a really nice acknowledgment to the growth and maturity
I guess I've shown on and off the field of
the last two years.

Speaker 2 (28:29):
Did you feel as though you were in the mix?
You can't ask me that plenty, you can't ask me that.
I'll repra yeah, yes, please, yes, please. How happy were
you with your super rugby form this season?

Speaker 4 (28:46):
Yeah? I was very happy. That's It's it's always a
hard one.

Speaker 9 (28:50):
You're frustrated with, I guess not achieving the ultimate goal
as a team, which is winning the whole thing.

Speaker 4 (28:57):
And then.

Speaker 9 (29:00):
But then yeah, I guess to put that to a
side and just look at my own personal growth throughout
the season. Yeah, really happy with my game and and
where I got to Yeah, yeah, yeah, proud of my
season this year so far.

Speaker 2 (29:11):
So, as I often say, making the All Blacks is
one thing. Now, you want to play for the All
Blacks and play well, yep for the All Blacks? How
much you know how much anticipation is there internally for you?
And and and what are your goals now over the
next month or so?

Speaker 4 (29:25):
Yeah, you're naded on the head there.

Speaker 9 (29:28):
Yeah, making it's obviously one thing, but to be named
to play and in the right there and in the
right to represent New Zealand as another thing. So you're
really looking forward to getting stuck into the.

Speaker 4 (29:38):
Group and putting my best foot forward as we all.

Speaker 9 (29:41):
Also, yeah, I guess there's there's more cool moments to come, hopefully,
but you know, this is a this is a big
step in the right direction, and yeah, a really proud
moment for me and my family.

Speaker 2 (29:51):
There certainly are many more wonderful moments to come to
So I know you're final, You're finally be blowing up.
So I better let you go and answer some messages, mate,
But a pleasure to chat to you delight to see
your name there today. Look forward to seeing you and Dunedin.

Speaker 4 (30:03):
She's pony. I appreciate the support always, mate. It was
a pleasure.

Speaker 2 (30:06):
Now great chatting to your groups and congratulations duplicitically if
you're one of the new faces, one of the new
names on the list today. I get the feeling that
his form was almost impossible to resist, really, and I
think that Scott Robertson said that when he was chatting

(30:27):
to the media today he basically said that it was very,
very hard to leave him out.

Speaker 10 (30:32):
Well, do you think it's a pretty leading question there earlier?
Because I picked himself in regards to form our consistency.
He's a sure rugby, parture, mature man what we asked
for him and a lot of the self control that's
required to play chest footy and he showed it.

Speaker 2 (30:48):
It's Scott Robertson's view on Duplessy Kadifi. I don't think
there's anybody who could say that he doesn't deserve to
be here. Only five loose forwards name that's the interesting
part here. And you heard Jason Ryan say that Scott
bowartt and Tuporva he could also cover loose forward if required,
I don't think either of them would start, although as

(31:08):
I say that that number six jumper is actually still
up for grabs. I reckon though Scott, Barrett and two
are the starting locking pair. I don't think you lose
a lot by having Patrick two pilot to win there.
But I think it's very and Barrett, but one or
both could end up on the blind side at some stage.
There's some some versatility there, which is always a good thing. Phil,

(31:31):
what do you make of this squad?

Speaker 11 (31:34):
Well?

Speaker 8 (31:35):
The way that days panned out? Finey, I've only sort
of heard bits and pieces. I haven't had a full
rundown yet, but from what I've heard, it sounds pretty good.
You know, from a man that's limited knowledge but a follower,
I'm very surprised that, Like a lot of people, I
think very surprised that Blackadder and haveverely missed out. I

(31:59):
would say that that was a bit of a I
did expect that they would be in, but yeah, like
I said, I'm a bit sort of not quite one
hundred percent up with the play. But it sounds like
a lot of the new players that got in, I thought, yeah, yeah,
that's pretty good. They all deserved that that shot.

Speaker 2 (32:23):
There is an absolute, I don't think. I don't think
there's an absolute like I think Ethan Blackad is probably
the closest one. He's the biggest eyebrow raiser. There's nobody
who everybody said, hey, he's definitely going to be in there,
who has missed out. I think most people probably thought
Blackadder would be there. He's not, but he will be
this year. But it's not as though they've left someone
like Will Jordan out, not that they were ever going

(32:44):
to or adiat of here. There's no there's no absolute
oh my goodness, how is that guy not on the team?
And I don't know that there's anybody in the team
who people say, well, he doesn't deserve to be there.
They're all there for a reason. So yeah, there's there's
some there's some there's some interesting decisions and some eyebrow raisers,
but no outright shocks, I don't think.

Speaker 8 (33:05):
Okay, okay, yeah, it will be interesting to see how
it'll pan out, maybe catching up with the breakdown or
something like that. But yeah, that's what I can sort
of make out too from from what I've limited sort
of bits and pieces I've picked up and seen. I
did and I watched Blackadder on there on the on
the news, you know, watching the Sporting News, and he

(33:26):
was pretty philosophical about it, and like you said, he'll
probably come in the mix anyhow, and Raiser said, you know,
that was a tough one, so I don't think he'll
be completely out of it. I was going to stating
to Andy, if you didn't mind, I'd never really got
the rundown on the game. I know it's been and
done and dusted on the on the Saturday, but if

(33:48):
you're sort of interested, I was going to give you
my kind of breakdown of what I thought of the game.

Speaker 2 (33:52):
Well, there's always I mean, there's always a benefit of
an extra bit of reflection film. So yeah, I mean,
with with the benefit of an extra extra day and
an extra night's sleep and mulling it over, what what
does stand out for you from.

Speaker 8 (34:08):
Well, I thought, for a start, the first two three
minutes I thought belonged to the Crusaders, and it looked good,
and they started off well. And then I thought, like
I was starting to use the rugby analogies. Now, I
suppose listening to the players and watching the shows and
that like the breakdown, and that then the Chiefs I
think got the ascendancy, you know, and started putting the
pressure on. But then I think there was like going

(34:31):
to sort of key moments for it, for it, but
you know, coming to halftime. At one point, I think
that there was a key moment in the first half
where the Chiefs defended the Crusaders for a few attacks
and I thought that's quite big. That would be a
significant thing and they would win the game. And the
same in the second half they had a period there
where they defended the Crusaders off again and I thought, wow,

(34:52):
this you know that this is they could come through
and witness with that effort. I think when just A
Marshall said about the scrump in order and he said,
I know exactly what's going going on. He had been
a next player in that and he said, you watch this.
And they got that scrumb penalty and kicked right out

(35:12):
in front and kicked the points you know, had a
bit of about three about three points ahead, and I thought,
that's another key moment. And I think there was a
turnaround feed you know, the Chiefs were feeding it in
and they got the penalty scrum, they put the push
on and I pushed them over and then again I
think it was about ten minutes into it, and then
about five or six minutes left to go, and they

(35:34):
upset the line out the Chiefs had when they were
down near the Crusader's line. Stole the line out, and
that was another big moment. And I got quite nervous
with those high balls when the new half back come
and come on for a start, and he kicked about
two or three high balls. But again those moments big
moments where Jordan took the high ball and was hope
for the half back took another high ball and sealed it.

(35:58):
And I think slowly, slowly in that second half at
the forwards, the Crusader forwards like your Christie and your
blackadders and you know your Cody Taylor's streaking down the
side there and Neil and the fellow Neil who got
he lost the first couple of battles with his opposite,

(36:18):
but then he came right and then to find out
he played on the knee as well. That was crook,
and I think that's where it was one in the end,
was that slowly that forward battle and they and they
also starved McKenzie out of the game like We talked
about how he would be a key player and it
might come down to him, but they starved him with

(36:39):
a bull and I guess that I think was down.

Speaker 2 (36:41):
To the forwards just.

Speaker 8 (36:44):
Yeah, not letting McKenzie get the ball, you know, and
letting him have the influence like he had in the
last few games. So that was my rundown.

Speaker 2 (36:51):
It's a great summary, Phil, it's a great summary. I
think you've thought it through and I found myself nodding along.

Speaker 4 (36:57):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (36:58):
It was always going to be a type battle, wasn't it.
And they say we used cliches. It's one up front
and I think the Crusaders forwards certainly can be very
happy with the way they played on Saturday night, and
a number of them have been rewarded, of course, with
the being named in this All Black side as well.
Good to chat here has always felt Thanks indep and
lovely to to meet you on the weekend. Fourteen away
from eight. Let's get a breakaway. When we come back,

(37:19):
we'll rate the weekend. Piney's Power rankings up next, lightiesour
rankings right, yes, Tody. Time for Piney's Power rankings. We
do them every Monday night, rating the best the worst
and the in between bits from the Sporting weekend. Let's
go the British and Irish Lions starting their twenty twenty

(37:42):
five tour down Under with defeat to Argentina. Before they'd
even left home. Brigo s cross Stairs the Ball of
Humors Half.

Speaker 11 (37:51):
A massive victory against the Lions in Dublin.

Speaker 2 (37:54):
It's the first time in fifty four years the Lions
have lost their opening match of any tour nine. The
Warriors are disappointing and probably unexpected home loss to the Panthers.
Be that very good win for the fenert Fanthers, arguably
the best this season.

Speaker 12 (38:11):
With a scratch lineup, they still come to Walker and
get the victory over the Warriors.

Speaker 2 (38:17):
The Warrior is still on the top four, but certainly
not the return from bye week that they were looking for.
Hey to Scott Dixon at the latest indiecar race in Wisconsin,
Scott Dixon has expected short and come into pit lane
for a splash and dash. This should mean that Polo
can megan because he was two laps to the good
and there's two laps at the line. Unfortunately, a petrol

(38:39):
and pit stop strategy that didn't pay off. Scott Dixon
coming home in ninth place. Seven is Chiefs fan Daniel,
who joined us on weekend sport on Saturday at Rock
Paul in christ Church ahead of the Super Rugby Final.

Speaker 11 (38:55):
A couple of us had to take it half a
day off and then yeah, heading refish Brunnon and we
actually had to join the Crusaders' website thing. Yeah, pretend
were Crusaders to try and get tickets. So the Lenks
have gone through actually quite extraordinary.

Speaker 2 (39:11):
True dedication. Such a shame that it wasn't the night
they would have hoped for. Six the Oklahoma City Thunder
NBA Champions.

Speaker 8 (39:19):
The Thunder have taken the NBA by Store for the
first time.

Speaker 9 (39:23):
The NBA champion resides at Oklahoma City.

Speaker 9 (40:01):
Brodie's the second pointoff killed Fen fire Stone in his

Speaker 2 (40:09):
It took seventy four hole Stephen Elker finishing second to
Miguel Anghal Jiminez on the second of those playoff holes.

elite BMX event win for Rico Beerman in a dramatic race.
As you heard there the leading riders crashing out on

Cup title in Malaysia. New Zealand retained their title and

(40:54):
they've done it in the most comprehensive of manners. New
