Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Darcy Wildergrave
from News Talks EDB. This is Sportsfix Howard by News
Talks d BE.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Hello there and welcome into the Sports Fixed podcast. For
the eighth of the eighth, August eight, twenty twenty five,
we're in association with GJ. Gardner Homes New Zealand's most
trust at home builder as we survey another sporting weekend
on Jason Pine.
Speaker 3 (00:31):
My name is Darcy Waldegrave and survey we will right
across the net's fifteen twenty odd minutes plenty to look
at ahead of the weeking pony.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
Indeed, there is now the Warriors, the Warriors. Whenever I
have been thinking about anything today, I find my mind
drifting back to the Warriors and what tomorrow nights might
hold for fans of that club. We've got anybody who
can give us a bit of professional help in this area.
Speaker 3 (00:56):
Well, I know a bloke who used to play for
the Bulldogs and then he rolled over the ditch and
ended up being a bit of a legiond to the
Warriors too. Steve Price is going to join us to
look at the two favorite teams, of course, are both
coming off a bit of a stagger last week, So
I don't know who's got more fire in their belly,
but I'm sure Pricey will know.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
He will indeed looking forward to hearing from Steve price,
one of every kiwi's favorite Australians, from this time here
in New Zealand. I've got a few things to kick
around in the chamber with you as well, and the
latest and sports news coming your.
Speaker 4 (01:27):
Way too, so let's get into it.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
In other news, let's get you underway with a look
at some of the big sports stories around today. The
Black Halps dominating the first day of the second and
final cricket Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo. They bowlt zimbabweh
out for one hundred and twenty five. Matt Henry another
five wicket bag picked it up as.
Speaker 4 (01:48):
Well, and Matt Henry, the star of the series, has
picked up another five wicket bag. The Black halp one
hundred and seventy four for one.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
It stumps Devin Conway's seventy nine to night out night
watchman Jacob Duffy, one of three debutantes, is there on eight.
The Tall Flags have survived a late scare to see
off the Philippines ninety four eighty six at Basketball's Asia
Cup in Saudi Arabia.
Speaker 5 (02:11):
Campanada game, Brazil, when go to two and oh Philippines
Backs against the law Zilla winning.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
The toll Backs had an eighteen point lead at one
stage but were forced into some nervy moments as the
Philippines rallied with a big twenty seven to nineteen third
quarter to cut the gap. And New Zealand rugby boss
Mark Robinson has outlined the timeline of talks with Richie
Morgar over his eighteen month deal to return from Japan.
Speaker 4 (02:39):
Wunga has signed a contract from.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
Next July, but he'll have to play Canterbury Inn PC
rugby before being eligible for the All Blacks.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
It's obviously been a bit of speculation over the last
twelve to eighteen months.
Speaker 4 (02:51):
But in practical terms.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
The most meaningful conversations have been happening for the last
few months really, probably since sort of April or so.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
Us Handavinion it's Sports Fix with Jason Hine and Dussy
law degree.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
So the new He's dropped yesterday that Richie Mulwonga will
return to New Zealand rugby next year via the NPC,
with Canterbury. He signed an eighteen month deal from mid
next year through to the end of twenty twenty seven
to come home from Japanese club to Sheba and play
for the Crusaders and Canterbury. He will have to play
NPC rugby first before becoming eligible for the All Blacks
from next October. Now this throws the cat well and
(03:29):
truly among the playmaking pigeons in the All Blacks. Here
are some questions for you. How is Boden Barrett feeling
right now? He's the incumbent All Blacks number ten and
now has to play for a coach who he knows
thinks there's a better option and one he's been chasing
to come home since he took on the top job.
Speaker 4 (03:48):
Boden Barrett's a pretty level aheaded chap.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
But how would you put out of your mind the
fact that your national coach would prefer there was someone
else out there instead of you.
Speaker 4 (03:57):
How is Damien Mackenzie feeling right now?
Speaker 2 (03:59):
He's now staring down the barrel of being the third
choice number ten, and even though unlike body he's an
option at fullback, he's by no means first choice there either.
With Will Jordan surely the man in the fifteen jumper,
at least in dmac's favor, is his impactability and versatility,
meaning his place in the match day twenty three is
still very much on the table, unlike body who probably
(04:21):
knows he wears the teen jersey or no jersey. How
is Ruben Love feeling right now? He's been pushed further
down the pecking order in a position he's very keen
to play and now becomes part of a pretty clogged.
Speaker 4 (04:33):
Fullback conversation as well?
Speaker 2 (04:35):
Will there even be a place for Ruben Love on
the plane to Australia for the World Cup in a
couple of years? And how would it feel committing everything
you have to New Zealand rugby and seeing a guy
parachute into plan a World Cup and then more than
likely jet out back to Japan afterwards. And finally, how
is Richie Wonger himself feeling right now? He'll be well
(04:56):
and truly aware of all the dynamics I've just mentioned,
and on top of that, the spotlight on him when
he comes back will be white hot. In many ways,
Razor is putting all of his World Cup eggs into
Richie moore On's basket and he'll be expected to deliver
at test level off the back of a few NPC
matches and three years in Japan. I think we all
(05:18):
knew he was coming back.
Speaker 4 (05:20):
Now he is back, and.
Speaker 2 (05:21):
Now it's managing that on a number of fronts, which
is the big challenge for racer.
Speaker 1 (05:29):
Dissecting the sporting agenda. It's Sports Fix with Jason Vine
and Darcy Waldegrave.
Speaker 3 (05:35):
And it's warm Welcome to the Fixed podcast to Stephen
price six Warrior ex Bulldogs. Of course we're going to
bring up Pricey and find out what's going on for
this big game coming up on Saturday night. Ka Pricey,
I'm very happy, really looking forward to what I think
a lot of people thought was going to be a
(05:56):
lot tougher match for the Warriors, but after what we
saw the Bulldogs put up last week, it might be
even Stephen, Stephen, what do you think around this?
Speaker 6 (06:07):
Yeah, well, both teams are, you know, sort of coming
off losses and right up there on the table and
this game is massive for both teams. Yeah, just seeing
what happened obviously last night, you know, with the Broncos
losing that you go from being fifth I think it
was eight just with how close everything is and how
(06:28):
results can go. And yeah, the Warriors, the Bulldogs, the Panthers,
the Storm, the Broncos, they're all pretty much playing each other,
the Dolphins over the next sort of four weeks. And
they are all the teams that are sort of currently
in the eight. And there's some teams knocking on the
door just out of the eight that want to be
in there. So where everyone's going to finish, We're going
(06:50):
to know more about that in another four weeks.
Speaker 3 (06:53):
Do you tend towards the teams that have been there,
done that, that know what they're running to?
Speaker 4 (06:59):
The finals?
Speaker 6 (07:00):
Are like?
Speaker 3 (07:00):
Did do you look to these teams and go you do?
Not write them off? And when we talk about the Panthers,
I think a lot of people have written them off
over the last few years, but they have turned a corner.
And we look at the Melbourne Storm preenially there are
they the scariest ones here because they know what it
takes down the stretch.
Speaker 6 (07:18):
Well, they are made, but both have got sort of
injury issues. At the moment you look like, you know, Isaiah, yeah,
I's not playing this weekend. Hughes's out for a few
weeks of the storm, but you know the rest of
the team's still gone good. And then when you bring
it back to the Warriors and the Bulldogs, you know,
I see that James Fisher Harris has been named on
(07:40):
like an extended bench, so that'd be a real positive
to be able to bring him back into the team.
But you know, losing like say guys like Luke Metcalfe
and you know, Mitch Vannette, those sort of guys for
the season, you know, they's put a real din in
the Warriors. But wow, like these young back rows like
Lequer and these other boys off the bench, how exciting
(08:02):
is it been seeing them develop and getting a bit
of a taste of footy and yeah, really strutting their stuff.
It's been really good to watch.
Speaker 3 (08:09):
Yeah, not that exciting for Jacob Laban after what happened
to him last week, probably out for the end. What
did you make of that decision and how that played out?
And also being sat down for two weeks after taking
a guy out, there's going to be out for six weeks?
Is that still fair and right? The way the judiciary works.
Speaker 6 (08:31):
It's a real hard one, mate. You know, you look
at like Stephen Crichton, doesn't get sent you know, sort
of sending him on the weekend, but the guy that
he came in contact with was taken from the field
for HIA. So it's a real hard one when you're going, oh,
(08:51):
you know, if someone gets injured and can't play there
it's the game, or it's out for a number of weeks,
then that should change the penalty. I'm not really that
keen on that. I think look at the actual incident
for what it is, exactly what happen bens. Is it aggressive,
is it intentional? Is it all those things? Put those
into the pot and come out with a decision, don't
(09:14):
you know, make it more because I made it up
being out. You know, he's on the sidelines for extended periods.
It's not ideal for that individual to be, you know,
on the sideline from an incident. But you know, when
you I just don't agree with it to be able
to say we'll take on a few more weeks because
our mate's injured and he's out for six weeks, or
(09:36):
give our mate three or four weeks because you know
that guy that he was the reason why he's out.
Speaker 3 (09:42):
I'm not a fan of that. It's an interesting precedent
to set. But I think when you look at Cafus's
record over the last couple of years, he might be
able to consider himself lucky. But look, that was last week.
Let's look forward to this week. Where are the areas
of concern on both sides? Do you believe, Steve, when
you look to both those games last week, were there
(10:04):
any lights in your head flashing on going at all?
Speaker 6 (10:08):
So the two number fours really stand out to me,
and the lack of sort of involvement. So chance for
the Warriors and Stephen Crichton for the Bulldogs, got to
find ways to get them more footy. You know, changes
and't playing fullback at the moment, and we know how
huge his work lad is when he's at fullback, how
(10:29):
influential that is for the Warriors, but now he's in
at center, it just doesn't seem like the balls getting
to him. And he's so important for you guys, as
is Stephen Crichton. So yeah, I think the halves have
got a real job to find ways to get them involved.
And the more they're going to be involved, the better
it's going to be for their footy teams. I think
(10:50):
the forwards cancel each other out. You've got you know,
Max King, Sam Houston the Bulldogs, and you know Marauda
and obviously Jackson starting for the Warriors and both really
good work rates, both do really well for their team. Disciplined,
young Sam Healy, he's gone really well in the last
few weeks and he's had a sort of jump in there,
(11:12):
and Read Marney obviously pretty experienced. So you keep on
going through and you've got really million army kick you out,
and you know Jacob Preston and Lecca and you know
Kurt Caple, and then go to Aaron Clark has had
a massive season this year. I actually think he should
be in the Team of the Team of the Year.
I Reckon dally Ms, his year has been that big,
(11:35):
and Jamie Salmon has been having a great year. And
then off the bench, you know, you've got to Marti
and kirk Man, who are both playing really good footy
this year. And yeah, it just goes through really really
even I Reckon as you sort of stayed to even
the fullbacks Jacob Jacob kraz and you know, probably not
first up fullbacks chosen, but they're in there, they're going
(11:58):
to do a great job. And yeah, I actually can't
wait for the game. And as all I say to
your mate, I can't lose.
Speaker 1 (12:04):
The chamber is now when session on Sportsfix into the
chamber we go.
Speaker 2 (12:09):
What a delight to hear from Steve Price. And look,
I don't know that there's much that you and I
can add really to his expert analysis.
Speaker 4 (12:17):
Look, I just hope they win the game. I hope
they win the game.
Speaker 3 (12:20):
Just take the two points until we want, doesn't care
if it's ugly, doesn't matter, Just get the two points.
But that's a ferocious Bulldog's site Steve mentioned wasn't looking
entirely happy what the Tigers did to them last week.
We wait, we see, we wait.
Speaker 2 (12:36):
We see Panthers nights tonight incidentally from eight, So that'll
give us an idea of whether if the Warriors were
to lose tomorrow, not whether they'll drop out of the
top four if the Panthers get up over the nights
that came in Newcastle. Other matters around the second cricket
Test between the black Caps and Zimbabwe. Do you think
this one's going to last longer than the first one,
which I think was over on day three?
Speaker 1 (12:57):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (12:57):
Was that the.
Speaker 3 (13:00):
The seventh session of the Test match. I think it
only lasted seventh sessions.
Speaker 4 (13:04):
That sounds right, that's.
Speaker 3 (13:05):
Maybe at last eight. Look, there are so many parallels.
I don't know how much of it you watched last night, Piney.
I can't help myself, even though it's not a proper
Test match because it's not part of a Test Championship.
I sat there and I watched the first couple of
sessions because I couldn't help myself. So many similarities, you
know though, off the top of my head. Scott Styrus said,
(13:27):
it's sixty seven for four on Zimbabwe in both Tests
at one stage after winning the toss and putting themselves
and in getting flogged ugly old times.
Speaker 2 (13:38):
Are now answer me this? When Will Young got out,
we're what one hundred and sixty two for one? I
know you're near the end of the first day, but
why on earth are they sending out a night watchman.
Speaker 3 (13:51):
I don't get night watchmen. I don't know if there's
a place for them anymore. Maybe you'd understand, No, I
don't understand. I think the modern cricketer should be able
to deal with everything because what normally happens in a
situation like this. You sent the night watchman out and
then you're sending another night watchman out about two balls later, right.
Speaker 2 (14:11):
I just but the thing for me though, there the
bolts and barbwe for one twenty five, there one sixty
for one. If I'm Henry Nichols, I'm embarrassed. Just go
out there and batman, you're the number three going bats well?
Speaker 3 (14:23):
But was his call was at Rob Walter?
Speaker 4 (14:25):
I don't know, but call it was it's the wrong one. Well,
it's the wrong one.
Speaker 3 (14:29):
Like you've still got him in there, and he didn't
end up like blowing his line. So I don't know
what happens when the game starts, what eight o'clock again
tonight over in Zimbabwe, there might be an explosion of
runs early doors. Who knows, who knows?
Speaker 2 (14:43):
Well he's got he's got eight two boundaries, so he's
on there. I mean, But then the job of a
night watchman has to sort of, you know, is to
just shut up shop, isn't it. He clearly didn't do
that for a couple of balls anyway. Yeah, look, let's
to see what happens. But for me, I just think,
you know, when you bought them out for one twenty
five and you've already got what sixty run lead.
Speaker 3 (15:01):
Anyway, Anyway, the night watching me love was like Neil
Wagner because he goes, I'm not a night watching them
in middle all the bats when he come out and
flog it to all parts, wouldn't he?
Speaker 4 (15:09):
He was fantastic to it fell if a wicket fell
within an hour of stup, said him, sprinting out a
man So hoping for a lot more.
Speaker 3 (15:18):
IM not enjoying about this Test match. And look, I
know it's only Zimbabwe. It's not the best competition you
only play being put in front of. But look at
this phalanx of young quicks and sometimes a wee bit
older quicks that are coming through. Now we've lost so
many good through injury and so on and so forth.
But man, they're just lining up. So whatever they're doing
(15:38):
out at Lincoln and Bob Carter, you've been fantastic over
the last twenty one years, he's he's stepping down, been
part of the pathways there. It's been working really really
well at Lincoln because these guys are ready to rock,
right they are.
Speaker 4 (15:51):
We said on the pod yesterday.
Speaker 2 (15:53):
You know if they went Henry Folks, Duffy Fisher, is
that a bit green Henry aside to give all those
three guys their test about well clearly didn't didn't have
too many you know, worries about that, because then they
went Folks picking up forfa on debut and Jacob Duffy
out there as a night watchman on devuy quit.
Speaker 3 (16:11):
Folks, sorry before you go on, because Folks is out
there collecting runs, ripping the middle order out, looking very
very good. You could see Matt Henry go, you're not
going to pinch my five wicket bag, give me the ball,
you wait, and so he took it. And then of
course who rolled in Fisher at the end and just
hammered it. They never mind, do you go? It's all
very very satisfactory for cricket fans.
Speaker 2 (16:32):
Indeed, yes, So let's hope that we get a bit
more than seven sessions. I got the feeling news a
little bat for most of the day. Two maybe maybe
chucksim Bubwe and at the back end of the day
and who knows what might happen. Right, I'm going to
give you some NPC games to pick the winner of.
I don't need much explanation, just the winner from you tonight, Northland,
Southland and funga day Northland, North Harbor, Tartanaki at Albany
(16:54):
tomorrow afternoon.
Speaker 3 (16:55):
North Harbor, Oh, North Harbor. They'll be stung after what happened.
They are playing at home. They celebrate that. And if
I don't say North Harbors, Parsons knows where I live.
Speaker 2 (17:08):
It's a very good, very good point, a very good point.
Why cuttle Wellington and Hamilton.
Speaker 3 (17:14):
I'm done sure about this. The Whycasians you would like
to think have enough. I think anyone saw them blow
it away last time. But I think Wellington would be
rightly upset with what happened last week, even though they
played the dominant Red and Blacks. But you'd lean towards
Wakato because they are at home. And it's the only reason.
Speaker 4 (17:33):
Why Tasman Mulaw two and Nelson four thirty five tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (17:36):
Well Tasman mad to wake up after what happened last week.
There's still what three seventy five favorites to win the
whole competition that's dropped a weeve it since they started,
So maybe they can actually just turn up would be nice.
Speaker 2 (17:48):
All right, I'm gonna pick Canterbury Auckland because you won't
be able to without an ipatch on. I think Canterbury
will get the job done. I think they'll win that
one in christ Church and go two from two. Sunday's
games for you counties. Monaco Bay of plenty in Poka
Koe Sunday afternoon.
Speaker 3 (18:03):
They have plenty too strong.
Speaker 4 (18:05):
Otago Hawks and to need and to wrap the round.
Speaker 3 (18:09):
Targo would probably get it done just because the nature
of the home. But again I can't really split them.
But it's a bit of a long trip, isn't it
for the Bay kids?
Speaker 4 (18:18):
All right?
Speaker 2 (18:19):
Those are the predictions of mainly you in one game
at me and I think why did I get to
do all that?
Speaker 1 (18:25):
You just find well, you.
Speaker 4 (18:26):
Can do it next week.
Speaker 3 (18:28):
I'm going to do it to you right now because
any what else happens over the weekend. When it comes
to rugby union, the far Up Palmer Cup gets underway tomorrow, yes,
and there's some good matchups there. The Storm are opening it.
I won't go right the way through it, but they're
coming up against the defending champions Why College Rifles. So
if you take a look, because there's the thing about
(18:49):
FBC this year is all the quality players are hopping
on a plane next week to tear off to the
northern Hemisphere. So it's a real chance for some of
the youth to come sprouting through with some of the
seasoned vets and better players have disappeared.
Speaker 4 (19:02):
That is true.
Speaker 2 (19:03):
But I still think the powerhouse is like the defending
champion white Cutters side, you know, like the Wellington Pride,
like County's Manico, like Canterbury, like Otago.
Speaker 4 (19:13):
I think I think that your traditional teams Premiership, you
can't do that.
Speaker 3 (19:19):
I can.
Speaker 4 (19:20):
I can make any rules. I like fo your podcast,
do what you want exactly.
Speaker 2 (19:26):
I think White Cutter will beat Auckland tomorrow in the
season open, that's yes, I say two o'clock tomorrow afternoon.
And I'm hoping that, yeah, that my Wellington Pride can
go to Nelson in the early game down there and
beat the Tasman muckle. But of course I'd never you know,
I'd never assume anything in this day and age. Are
we done in the chamber, Yeah, let's let's let's lock
the doors.
Speaker 3 (19:47):
We're out now, Jason, I mean, like lock the door
when we both dive Jason, Jason opened the door.
Speaker 1 (19:54):
