The All Blacks are only half of the equation - and the Wallabies also named their 23 to attempt to end the 31 year unbeaten streak the All Blacks have at Eden Park.

D'Arcy spoke with the rugby editor and scribe of The Roar across the ditch, Christy Doran, to discuss the side the Wallabies have named ahead of the first Bledisloe Cup test.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Duncy Wildergrave
from News Talk ZEDB.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
We'll join it now by Christy Dorin, a friend of
the program, so thank you. Agrees with that. He's the
rugby editor, Rugby Scribe, Rugby Everything at raw. Welcome to
the program. Big match coming up, and that is an
absolute understatement. The Wallabies are paying four dollars eighty to win.
Everyone's writing them off. But i'd suggest that current form

(00:35):
would say, Christy that they're not writing themselves off at all.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
Yeah, great to join you, and you're right.

Speaker 4 (00:42):
It's a really fascinating game because despite both sides coming
in here with two wins, two defeats and the Rugby Championship,
if you look at it and you've read the headlines
of the last month, it be chalking cheese, wouldn't it
the All Blacks under all this pressure Scott Robinson or
under all this pressure, revival and momentum here in Australia
with the Wallabies, and it comes off the back of

(01:04):
beating the lines in the third Test and obviously shocking
the box at Ellis Park the first win there and
or was it sixty two years or so? So it's
a fascinating one. I think the All Blacks are favorites.
I think they will win well. But there's this belief,
this quiet belief and confidence in this Wallaby's team, which

(01:24):
just means that you can't you can't write them off.
And they've shown that over the last twelve months. And
they've got an unbelievable coaching unit led by Joe Schmidt,
who have given and brought back confidence into Australian rugby.

Speaker 2 (01:40):
And you've stolen a lot of great coaches from us,
say Ozzie, Joe Schmidt's one of ours. Mike Cron's fairly handy,
he's done the business over here as well. Underestimate well.
Tom Donelly's involved as well. So you've got a great
insight to the New Zealand psyche in the way rugby
is being played. Is there a hint of that with
what Ozzie Rugby are doing. I'm saying you're not playing

(02:00):
your own style, But how much of that has linked
through into the team.

Speaker 4 (02:05):
I reckon Joe Schmidt has embraced what Shan rugby is about.
And I know that people like David Campezi you have
had their own hot takes.

Speaker 2 (02:16):
Really no, David team Campsy get out of here.

Speaker 4 (02:19):
But I think that Joe Schmidt's done a great job
in terms of liberating these guys, bringing back some of
the cool fundamentals which this team needed. And they've got
a great few players off the bench who love to
take the game on and guys like Tate McDermott and
Angus Bell and interestingly we're going to see Tate McDermott.

Speaker 3 (02:42):
Start in the number nine jersey this weekend.

Speaker 4 (02:45):
Micron is just about the best scrum coach and most
proven experienced forwards coach in the world and he's perfect
for the Australian knock about lad that wants to learn.
But Micron has just got this ability to relate to
people and he's done a superb job there. And Tomilly

(03:06):
is a really smart, clever coach. The Western Force, which
is the franchise he's just left, they had the best
defensive lineout in the Super Rugby this year and he's
jumped in and you've seen immediately that he's picked up
where Jeff Paling left off. So they very very well coached.
And the important thing is is they know that the

(03:27):
brand of rugby, the style of rugby they're trying to play,
and I don't know if you can say the same
thing about the All Blacks with Scott Robinson. Obviously there's
been a lot of people that have said that over
the last few weeks. But you can see the fact
that the Wallaby's are leading the charts with line breaks,
the amount of tries that they've scored. They're taking the
game on it. Like the fact is they lost twenty

(03:48):
eight to twenty six less than a fortnight ago against Argentina.
Argentina scored one trial in Australia scored four and the
Wallaby's picked up a losing bonus point as well as
a more than three try bonus point as well. So
that's why they're out in front, and they're playing a
brand of rugby which has them competing until the eightieth minute.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
And the clear and prison threats right across the place.
You look at that back line. I don't think he's
say much more, but so he's said fantastic Max Jorgensen
coming in at fullback, and now you've got the crafty
old bugger James O kind of running the pivot at
Corey Tool on the left wing. There are some game
breakers in there.

Speaker 4 (04:26):
It's both exciting and it's scary at the same time.
I think Max Jorgan is a generational talent. He reminds
me of the Will Jordans of Australian rugby, just the
way that they make the difficult look easy, the way
that they turn bounces which you would say are lucky
bounces into try scoring moments. And Jordan that has had

(04:46):
that ability, hasn't He just finished try as where you go?

Speaker 3 (04:49):
How have you done that?

Speaker 4 (04:50):
And Doorgo does that too. But the thing that concerns
me about this team though, is that there's eighteen caps
of experience in the back three. Off the back of
losing Tom Wright and Andrew Kellaway, they've now got Jorgenson
and two wingers who have got less than five test
matches kind of each. You've got Corey Tool is going
to be playing he's fourth game. You've got Harry Potter

(05:10):
that's going to be playing about the same as well,
so he's playing his first match since the second Line's Test.

Speaker 3 (05:16):
So there's a.

Speaker 4 (05:17):
Serious amount of not much kicking between the three of
them firstly, but secondly there's a lot of inexperience. And
then you look at the bench and this is what
concerns me maybe even more. Ryan Lonigan is a phenomenal talent.
He deserves his opportunity more than most, but he's uncapped
and next to him on the bench Taane Edmon and
the replacement playmaker there who's going to be playing his

(05:39):
fourth match. I don't think on Monday Joe Schmidt thought
that he would be having those two guys as his
replacement nine and ten for Tate McDermott, who hasn't started
for more than a year in a James O'Connor has
just come back from around the world trip to London
over the last week. So it's a really fascinating bench mix.

(06:01):
With what Joe Schmidt's had to said on.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
Plain, you've got to concentrate on what the Australian to
the job. There are so many holes and what the
All Blacks presented against the South Africans a couple of
weeks back. Is there any area there you think maybe
the Wallabies should look to exploit. I mean you touched
on the lack of kicking, so that high ball attack
which the All Blacks have been very vulnerable under that
that's not going to be an issue, I don't think,

(06:25):
And so kind of can climb into it. But where
the great heaving gaps? Do you think maybe the Wallabies
kind of crack at.

Speaker 3 (06:34):
I think it.

Speaker 4 (06:37):
Is a really interesting one because only a couple of
days ago I thought it would be Jake Gordon, it
would be box kicks, it would be pressure in the air.

Speaker 3 (06:43):
And that's what they're going to do with Harry Potter.

Speaker 4 (06:45):
He's been chosen because they think he's the best in
the year in Aussie rugby and the stats probably paint
a picture where he competes, you know, and always get
it back. But who wins that aerial contest is going
to be crucial. I think you'll see the All Blacks
keep a long and try to get the Wallabies to
either run it back or kick it. I reckon you'll
see these Wallaby team have a crack and Tate McDermott

(07:08):
by picking him, there by having the combination with Fraser
mcwright into Harry Wilson into Tate McDermott and James O
kind of fool guys that have spent a lot of
time playing for Queensland. I think they'll take this game
on and if they do that, they might catch the
All Blacks by surprise. We're probably thinking maybe the Wallabies
will be conservative. I don't think this team is good

(07:30):
enough to be conservative. I think they'll take it on
and we'll try to expose some of the All Blacks
back line frailties.

Speaker 3 (07:38):
I like Proctor.

Speaker 4 (07:39):
I think he's a guy that can tackle bast and
free his arms and off flowed. But they have just
shown a couple of weaknesses, haven't they out wide?

Speaker 3 (07:50):
And you know, no less.

Speaker 4 (07:51):
Defying an ukuh is a really interesting call and so
I think the Wallames will take this game on.
