Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Duncy Wildergrave
from News Talk Zed.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Be right, let's carry on with the the netball saga.
I shouldn't grimace like this, but it's it's a shame
because the Constellation Cup is on the way and this
is top level. Come games, got World Cup. But the
Constellation Cup us against the Diamonds to a way to home,
Dad is epic. That really is a line. It's a

(00:32):
line in the sand. It's a tide mark. It's how
good we get. Sadly, it's been overshadowed by whatever's going
on a netball New Zealand, which is not a great deal.
It's not a great deal positive anyway. So Dame no Lean,
you notice I've kind of stopped saying damon, sir because
I'm a bit tired of that whole royal thing. So

(00:53):
I might just wind the classes. Am I allowed to
do that? Does this has become their official name? I
suppose it does. No anyway, Knowles will not be resuming
a control of the silver ferns of the Constellation cut event,
of course, the jury again serving as the interim coach.
So many questions, no answers. What's happening in the environment.

(01:17):
No one seems to know if it's been tasked with. Well,
it's not only an intense series, it is the top
of the trees. It set the world's best Australian side
the dinings. If it's going to join the program? Now,
are we going to chat to her around what she
knows is going on, which I'd suggest is not a
great deal, How she's going to lead, how she's going
to unite this group ahead of a Constellation Cup and

(01:41):
the end of the year Northern Tour which is hard
on the heels of the five Constellation Cup goes What
this means for fans of netball in New Zealand? What
can they expect? What do they need to know? How
she joins us now? Cura Kura, I trust you well
and maybe a little overworked. You've got the job coaching

(02:05):
the ferns and an interims again. How long did that
take to sort out?

Speaker 3 (02:10):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (02:11):
I look at there was obviously a genuine process to
continue working with Dame Noline and that goal of having
her back in here. But they came on Saturday. It
was Saturday morning afternoon, I kin't even remember, but when
they hadn't quite got to that space, So it's not
the end obviously, with both Leanna and I here in

(02:31):
the interim rolled again and like I look, I said
at the last time, it's always a privilege, it's a challenge,
and probably the biggest challenge is getting out of work
at that short stage.

Speaker 3 (02:41):
But look, I really believe in the firms, I really believe.

Speaker 4 (02:44):
In our game, and if I can help make a difference,
I want to do that.

Speaker 2 (02:47):
Did you suspect though, that you would carry on on
this interim role from what you'd seen, from what you've observed,
what you've heard.

Speaker 4 (02:54):
I was hopeful that there was going to be a
positive outcome and change, because that's you know, that's it's
the goal is to have that put back in place.
But I was aware Friday they'd let me know to say, look,
if we don't get to a position, would you be available.
So I was a we're Friday night that I needed

(03:15):
to switch my head from getting ready for term four
or we're still getting ready for turn four and moving
into the space.

Speaker 2 (03:21):
Yeah, what about the grout you're working with? There's only
one chaine to this firm squad? Is this your squad
and someone else's squad? How much of you to do
with selection? You've been handed the team? How does that operate?

Speaker 4 (03:33):
Yeah, the squad was selected by national selectors at the start,
the wider squad and then the team for tiny Jamison
the selectors. The national selectors have had input to that,
and then I've had some input as well. So yeah, look,
I don't mind who's in fun. I really grateful. I
think we've got an amazing group of players across the
whole a team. So this is really just about poor

(03:57):
Amelia coming in and to this piece coming out of
the back of the international World will Use Cup. That
was really just an opportunity to get her back into
the space again and that's the only change that's been made.

Speaker 2 (04:10):
Have you been given any information or vites around what
you can or can't say, because a lot of this
tumult going on right now is obviously the communication between
some of the players and the coach. So what parameters
do you have to work with and so you avoid
the same issue of that.

Speaker 4 (04:30):
Yeah, look, I think the biggest one is really just
there's been a lot of works that have been put
in place to make sure that there were a vast
range of leaders able to contribute across all aspects of
the program, and so my big piece has been about
helping them be that voice so that there are players
in here that are leading lots of aspects. But at

(04:51):
the same time, the last piece in the tiny Jamison
my role was I felt like I was just in
a holding pen. Is this one for seven weeks? Have
an opportunity to be me a bit more, you know,
and not just such a week can make some little
subtle change, but by and large there's some I think
there's some great things in this group. There's some great
leaders and with them losing, not losing, but you know,

(05:14):
they're captain finished and she'd been near a long time,
so there's lots of growth. But I'm seeing it. I'm
seeing it and near enough that finding. You know, there's
obviously challenges for players to even sit with this situation
that boyd, they're being brave and courageous having conversations and
making sure that they are really trying to connect and
be unified because we've got Australia.

Speaker 3 (05:35):
And that is no easy seats, so we've got to
get it together a fast.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
Well, do you feel like you're tip tying around though,
because from what we can gather and of course there's
been so much of a vacuum here we don't actually
know is that the issues that got no Lean into
strife she doesn't even know about. So that's why I'm
asking you. Have they given you any ideas about where
to go, where not to go, what you should be
worried about it?

Speaker 3 (05:57):
No, No, not so much.

Speaker 4 (05:58):
There's been Again I haven't been privy to those conversations,
and obviously that's part of an employment piece. But line
has been simply through the high performance manager, this is
what we're preparing for a test match, and has not
really gone into what you can and can't do. It's
about creating the environment where people can be their best,

(06:19):
put their best to teach al on court, and our
job as coaches is to make sure that we create
that environment and bring the best out of them and
to the players. Their willingness has been about, Okay, they've
got to come stack with intensity and they've got to
come with your own ability to go. But I haven't
felt at all pressured either way. Maybe that's just who

(06:39):
I am, but I understand the complexity of the situation.
But I'm keeping it really focused and as a coach
that's to do that, not be everything else.

Speaker 3 (06:47):
As people who do all sorts of roles here.

Speaker 4 (06:49):
But my job is to make sure I prepare them
and self has discussed enough well.

Speaker 5 (06:54):
It must be really difficult, though, to climb into this
area and to express yourself fully as a coach if
you're not entirely sure about where the head space of
the athletes are, because apparently there is split.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
I mean, you're not going to know the split. You
didn't count them off, you know, if you're pro you man,
So how do you go about that? You said you've
got to be you, You've got cart lives to actually
be you.

Speaker 4 (07:18):
Yeah. Yeah, I think the big thing for me is
I've got to be consistent and I've got you can
only be consistent in you and for everybody you know,
like you've been in many teams with you don't all
have to be the best of mats, but you've got
to be aligned in terms of where you're going in
that direction. And that's the key for us is being
really clear. With playing Australia, we have to be really
clear that we know our job well and that we're

(07:40):
able to execute that and we've got to keep on
that task. People will have feelings different ways, but as professionals,
who've got to be able to put all of that aside,
not park it necessarily, but compartmentalize it enough to be
present in training, to be present where they're at, to
seek the support that needs from people that they need
it from in order to be the professional and deliver

(08:01):
that what they need to. It's not easy, but it's
an important piece that we're all, you know, making sure
that we're being the best that we can be.

Speaker 2 (08:08):
Have you express this to the group in any way,
shape or format. Are you allowed to do you think
it's necessary that you set your store?

Speaker 3 (08:14):
Absolutely?

Speaker 4 (08:16):
Yeah, We've had that quite large team meetings and we
and they've expressed it to each other about where they're
at and how they're feeling, but committed to moving forward.
So I'm really open. That's what I've found really good
about them as they're open to that dialogue. They recognize
there's tension and this challenge, but they're absolutely walking towards

(08:36):
it and not showing or way. It's making sure that
they can still be the people that they need to
be for performance and support each other even when sometimes
we don't. You know, you can agree to disagree some
in lots of areas, but you've you've got to walk
a line towards the vision because you've got an opponent
who's absolutely ready to come at you.

Speaker 2 (08:53):
I think the media are a little confused that you
probably like it like that quite thank the most national
organizations do. But there's a lot of confusion out there.
But for you, it's basically the figurehead of the netball
of the Silver Ferns moving into what a very intense
series against the best team in the world, too away
and two home. What's your message to the public. They're

(09:14):
sitting here watching this, They're going, what do we want
to believe? What do we see? What are we feeling?
What do we need? What can you tell the public
from your point of view about your expectations or what
they should be considering or thinking around this team. So
there'll be confusion out there, is that? Yeah?

Speaker 4 (09:30):
I think there is. Some people have opinions and a
lot of that you can't change. And I get that
there's been a number of dynamics that you mean that
people want to take sides, and we're certainly not here
to take sites. We're here to make sure we've stepped
to the space in the interim to make sure that
we can get this team on court. And I think
the support that this group needs is, Yeah, they've got
some stuff that they're working through, but they unified about

(09:53):
making sure we've got a commitment. We know the task
of winning these this test series and another one on
the back. We've got seven weeks to make sure that
we can put performances together and at the same time
navigate some of that emotional challenge that sits within them
for each of them. And some people can do that
really quickly and others can't. And I think you know,
often for public, we get it, they only see what

(10:14):
they see and people will make judgments, but sometimes it
can be unnecessarily harsh because they've got very little information
and for them to have more information isn't possible because
it's about employment, and that's unfair for you know, people
to speak out of turns.

Speaker 3 (10:28):
So look, we get used to that.

Speaker 4 (10:31):
It's part of where you sit when you're in a
professional space. And what I can say is these players
are working incredibly hard to work through that, to make
sure that they are professional in the delivery and that
they are united when they go into these games.

Speaker 3 (10:46):
Do they all get on. Do they all agree?

Speaker 4 (10:48):
I don't know many workplaces that do. I think it's
a myth that we you know, you're.

Speaker 3 (10:52):
Going to be effective if you're good or you all
get on that.

Speaker 4 (10:54):
Workplaces aren't like that, and this is a workplace. So
they're working through what that looks like. But they committed
to the Silver Firm. They're committed when they put that
black dress on that it represents something big and they
will they can step up to that.

Speaker 2 (11:08):
You've spoken to Knowles, are you allowed to?

Speaker 1 (11:11):
No?

Speaker 3 (11:11):
Not allowed to?

Speaker 4 (11:13):
So I haven't, but you know, think of her all
the time. I've got a huge amount of respect for
her as a person and as a coach, and you
know what, you can have that empathy around how she's
feeling in these situations too, and so and this group
feels the same. You know, everybody deeply cares about others,
despite the fact that there's maybe potential difference as an
opinion or a lack of I don't even know half

(11:33):
of the issues, and I don't need to because I
don't want to be clouded about what I'm doing. I've
got to be really clear and support the group to
be ready for these test series.
