Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Dancy Waldergrave
from News Talk Zed be.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Big news out of the Warriors. This evening, the Warrior
is announcing that Luke Metcalf, the halfback, has re signed
through until twenty twenty eight. It comes before the November
first window incidentally, where teams can start signing him for
twenty twenty seven, so they've got rid of that's also
media reports this week that he wanted to head home
to Sydney soy Cam. George, the CEO of the Warriors,
(00:34):
joins us on the program to discuss Cam. You must
be delighted to get this one over the line.
Speaker 3 (00:39):
Yeah, it's great for our fans, our footy club and
our future. Luke's a not only a quality player, but
a quality person and we love having him at the club.
Speaker 4 (00:48):
And you know.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
It's great when you resign players and extend their time
and he truly believes in everything.
Speaker 4 (00:55):
That he and the team and we as a club
are doing. So very happy.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
We always confident of getting this across the line.
Speaker 4 (01:03):
Yeah, look, we're iving in.
Speaker 3 (01:06):
We all have been in constant dialogue with Luke and
you know when you had that open, transparent relationship with
your players, you sort of feel like you know where
you're going and everyone buying in and so on, so
you know there's always stuff they've got to consider personally,
and you allow the player to do that, and while
(01:28):
they're doing that, you.
Speaker 4 (01:28):
Know you can never be overconfident. But you know, I
know Luke believes in the club and what's going on.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
How much of a statement of intent that you've managed
to hold your first choice half back for the nixt
well through to twenty eight.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
I think it's testament to you know, our footy team
and the culture of the club and the direction of
the club's going, and you know, the pathways and everything
that's just starting to come together after a number of
years planning and it takes a long time, and I
just feel like it's a reflection of everything put together
as a collective. And you know it is even for
(02:07):
us that you know, Luke chooses to be here and
be with his teammates and represent our fan base, which
you know he's really proud of, So you're very happy.
Speaker 2 (02:17):
November one, the deadline was coming up pretty quick. You know,
how much does that sit in your back of your
mind as you're obviously trying to convince him to stay
and ward off. I suppose other clubs are going to
the free market.
Speaker 3 (02:31):
Well, if you read the media, apparently it's quite obvious
that it's a big problem. But when you know internally
what's going on, and as I said, having that open dialogue,
and you know that that dateline is there for a reason,
and some players want to.
Speaker 4 (02:45):
Use it and test it and go to market.
Speaker 3 (02:48):
But you know, ideally you don't want to be hovering
around that dateline to with your key players. And you know,
you know, Luke's been away for a week, he's just
been married, and you know, so he's had a bit
on so the timing of it all, you know, it's
obviously worked out, so it'll it'll make the market a
(03:10):
lot less attract you for a number of clubs.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
It was so it wasn't like your priest into action
once you saw that story come out earlier in the.
Speaker 4 (03:16):
Week, No, no, quite, Frank.
Speaker 3 (03:19):
I enjoyed reading all those stories and knowing full well
where I was at the process and where Luke was
at with the process. And yeah, it was a bit
of a shock to us all, but you know, that's
that's just the landscape we're living and you know, it's
you know, it is what it is, and that's okay.
Speaker 4 (03:38):
And yeah, I knew where we're at, and my.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
Job was to stay quiet and do the go through
the process and get the get the paperwork done when
he got back from FIGI, and that's what we did.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
Was twenty twenty eight, the length of the term that
you both wanted him to sign.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
I think it's a great opportunity for both Luke and us,
and you know, a two year extension and I think
that's a good time one. So yeah, it's all systems
go now, and we want to we want to make
sure that we make every season a winner with him here.
And you know that two year extension could you know,
intentionally could be a.
Speaker 4 (04:16):
Five year extension. So it's it's everyone's happy. So that's
the main thing.
Speaker 2 (04:20):
How does it set you up for the next three
seasons in terms of your future planning? I suppose other
signatures that you might be wanting out in the market
to go, hey, we've got our first choice half back
locked in for the next three years.
Speaker 4 (04:32):
Yeah, that's an important cogon wheel, isn't it that. Yeah,
you have one of your main main players locked in
and allows players.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
You're talking to or coming through your development system to see,
you know, with clarity what's happening, how the team's run
and how it's performed. And you know, we just want
consistency there and stability, and that's what this signing does
for us. And so yeah, it helps a lot when
you're when you're planning for the future.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
Obviously, the players are on hold at the moment, Cameron,
But you've engauged a general reaction, have they heard then?
Speaker 3 (05:07):
I look, everyone loves Luke and he loves them and
as a club were one in all in, and I'm
sure they'll be very happy. I've spoken to a couple
over the last week or two at his wedding and
so on, and you know, but I'm sure they'll be
staked with the news today now it's being confirmed.
Speaker 2 (05:24):
And Cameron George final question, how is his rehab going?
Is he going to be all right for Round one
next year?
Speaker 3 (05:31):
Look at it's it's a long process and he's he
and the club are very happy where he's at.
Speaker 4 (05:38):
But I mean, you don't want to rush these things
there though.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
You want to get everything right and if time is important,
well we give you more time. So at the end
of the day, I think everyone's happy where they're at.
But it's a long process and one that you know,
you don't get a you don't get a second chance
to get it right, so you've got to get it
right the first time, and that's what our club are
(06:01):
focused on and Luke's focused on.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
