Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Dancy Wildergrave
from News Talk zed Be.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
The West Indians are coming, actually they've already arrived. Tomorrow
day take on the black Caps game one of five
at T twenties, then three one days National Dinner, three
Test series. We're going to carry on with the spring
slash the summer of cricket. We're joined now by Jacob Duffy,
fast bowler in the black Caps.

Speaker 3 (00:30):
We're going to talk.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
About the series, about domestic cricket, possibly hey and the
depth of the national side.

Speaker 3 (00:34):
He joins us.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
Now, good day, Jacob, good thanks for having me. It's
all go. Thanks very much for joining us. It's all
going now. The West Indies a here. It's it's almost
like a proper too. I'm trying to pinch myself. There's
T twenties, there's one days Nationals and there's a Test series.

Speaker 4 (00:49):
This is this appears from heaven. Jacob, you must be stoked.

Speaker 3 (00:53):
Here's mate. It's yeah.

Speaker 5 (00:54):
It's been one big rollercoaster the summer so fast, sort
of just in one series into the next. So if
there hasn't been much downtime, but that would be cool.
It looks so pretty strong West Indian team and yeah,
three formats would be good fun.

Speaker 2 (01:06):
I believe you called it summer. We're still on spring
and it rained for most of October.

Speaker 3 (01:11):
I did feel that ironically Wellington as a best weather
how about that, go figure.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
I won't even talk about that. Let's talk about what's
coming up in front. What do we know about the
West Indies because obviously we've just had the English believe
hard on the back of the Australians and now we're
turning around and going right, what threats do they possess?
Where do they sit? Should we be afraid of this?

Speaker 4 (01:31):
These guys?

Speaker 2 (01:31):
Are they going to beat a zip or what's the
deal with you?

Speaker 3 (01:34):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (01:35):
Mate, they're well traditionally very good white Wall team, aren't they.
So obviously there's a twenty twenty Rock Cup around the
corner and they won a couple I think even there.

Speaker 3 (01:44):
So yeah, historically very big powerheaders.

Speaker 5 (01:47):
We're just finished watching it doing the scouting videos stuff now,
and very good power headers, an extra quite skilled footballers,
so they've got the makings of a very good white
Wall team. I haven't looked into the Red Bull yet,
but yeah, especially in the twenty twenty game and I know,
Eat Park's certainly not going to be big enough for
a few of those boys.

Speaker 2 (02:03):
Unfortunately, well, Eden Park's probably not big enough for Harth
of you team as well. I mean, you look at
what Mitchell Santon is doing. He's playing golf out there,
isn't it's extraordinary.

Speaker 3 (02:13):
Definitly, he's he doesn't like something.

Speaker 5 (02:14):
Actually I think I don't know whether that's robotterism or whatever,
but he seems to unlock something and he's that one.

Speaker 3 (02:20):
The other night out of the stadium was it was awesome?

Speaker 2 (02:22):
Well, it was ridiculous. You watch it on replay over
and over again and what that doing over there? I
know what he's doing in a spare time. You can
tell from us from his swing? What did you pick
up out of the English series? What do we need
to know that we can reapply to this series the
t twenties.

Speaker 3 (02:37):
Initially, it's probably just.

Speaker 5 (02:41):
A good a good reminder that you know a Brandon cricket,
especially here at home. It's sort of it's good enough.
It was a very good England team. I know they
didn't get any runs and stuff, but you look at
that top auto lineup, they're bloody good. But I guess
what we can hang ahead on, especially as a bowling unit,
is that you know, we get we get letteral movement
with not the big, nasty fast season of world cricket,

(03:01):
but we get good letter of movement. I think we've
got good skills and us in New Zealand is going
to be a tough team to deat.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
And that's based on what you guys do up top.

Speaker 4 (03:09):
And you've got to be impressed by that.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
And you look from the coaching point of view is
that you've had a few changes, You had players to
go down with injury, players that come back, and so
on and so forth. So the fact that all of
you guys can fall into place and perform that job,
that says a lot about your systems, doesn't it.

Speaker 3 (03:26):
It does, mate.

Speaker 5 (03:27):
I think our depth's been yeah, well voluntarily tested, But
talk to most of the guys, I think it's a
credit to our sort of domestic system.

Speaker 3 (03:36):
You know, like there's a lot of guys I'm in
that vote.

Speaker 5 (03:38):
They've come on sort of you know, after a wealth
of sort of domestic.

Speaker 3 (03:42):
Cricket under their belt. They come in when their late
twenties even early thirties, and they.

Speaker 5 (03:45):
Perform and you see most look at the folks are
now texts coming back from a good shift of domestic cricket.
Like these guys are performing straight straight from domestic game
and doing really well. And like I said, we're doing
it in our conditions and doing in our way and
competing against some of the best in the world, and
not just competing, but we've sort of dominated that one too.

Speaker 3 (04:04):
So yeah, it domestic crickets.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
Fish, tell us about your Actually, hold on before you
say that, because a lot of people have been writing
New Zealand domestic cricket off. They don't like the super smash,
they don't like this d but evidentally it works because
that's what New Zealand Cricket have got provincial cricket and
plays for. So you can roll guys through and you
can roll guys through at any level, So that is working.

Speaker 4 (04:27):
What do you attribute there to do you reckon.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
Jacob, It isn't. It's just good quality cricket.

Speaker 5 (04:33):
I've sort of been done a few little bits and
bobs now in Candy Cricket or the hundred or whatever
it is, and a domestic game is well, in my opinion,
as strong as anywhere in the world. I guess you
get bigger budgets and things elsewhere in terms of TV
production maybe or whatever it is, you know, and they
can put a bit of hooflower in good marketing around it.
But at the end of the day, the cricket that

(04:53):
I think is playing around our country is as good
as anywhere, to be honest.

Speaker 3 (04:58):
It's the opinion anyway.

Speaker 4 (05:00):
Yeah, that's a humble opinion, will take it. I'm all
over that.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
I don't know how to say humble. It doesn't really
stick with me. But so but a lot of you guys,
I've turned up and you played a lot through domestic
cricket and it's not been tool slightly later that you've
actually got up to that next level. So there's been
plenty of time developing your craft. And it seems initially
like that's not good, let's get the guys in there
straight away, but it's actually paying dividends because you guys

(05:24):
know your games, don't you.

Speaker 3 (05:26):
Oh a hundred century I know.

Speaker 5 (05:29):
Yeah, even looking back to when I first started playing
domestic cricket, you know, you're a young guy that I've
probably got chucked into early.

Speaker 3 (05:35):
But yeah, I.

Speaker 5 (05:37):
Didn't know what my game was about. Now I've had
the time I've had experience under the belt. I've been
in a lot of different situations before, and mainly that
when things you know, when things are going well, it's easy,
it's easy for anyone. But when things aren't going so well,
that's finding a way to get back on track or still.

Speaker 3 (05:52):
Find a way to put a performance in. And I
think that's when you can rely on your experience.

Speaker 5 (05:56):
And you've met Henry's example, a guy that's played so
much cricket everywhere around the world.

Speaker 3 (06:00):
I know he was about full up balls and.

Speaker 5 (06:02):
He's good to go because he knows that his actions
is what it is and it's good enough to compete
against in one in the world. So to full back
on the experience, I think is a huge one. I
know it's a word that's thrown around a lot, but
I guess in my older age, I've figured out what
it actually means. And yeah, I'm a'mdditionally banking on it now,
that's for sure.

Speaker 2 (06:18):
Card it's important because it doesn't highlight and onder the lines.
The fact that they're keeping guys in games longer so
they understand what they can do before they progress to
the next level.

Speaker 4 (06:27):
That's not a bad thing at all.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
You don't want to rush that because you guys have
got careers that go on for even know. I mean,
how long does your average big fastball last?

Speaker 4 (06:36):
How many more runs? How many more wickets have you
got it? How many more have you got? Do you think?

Speaker 3 (06:41):
Yeah, I don't ask that question. I'm thirty one, thirty
one years.

Speaker 5 (06:44):
You know, I've only just started sat of this international
full time.

Speaker 3 (06:48):
For the last a couple of years.

Speaker 5 (06:49):
So I've got plenty of the tech mate We've you know,
insinces are good these days, and we've got a lot
more information around nutrition all that kind of stuff.

Speaker 3 (06:56):
So I'll hang on for as long as I can.
