Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Dancy Wildergrave
from News Talks.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
It'd be we saw some basketball. We're talking the Breakers
a bit of a rough time. There's an understatement. So
far in the National Basketball League. They are second to
last in the latter only three wins, nine losses. Long season,
lots dome turn things around and like to think Brisbane
Bullets tomorrow night. Reuben Tarangi Ki, member of the Breakers,
joins us now to talk about Sunday Night's lost to
(00:34):
Sydney to our Night's mansion. How on earth you're going
to turn this around? Hey, Reuben made how are your
how's azz?
Speaker 3 (00:39):
He? Yeah, it's good. The weather's quade nice here on
the Gold Coast.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
Well, you can't, but you could complain about what's going
on at the moment. You guys are on quite the skid.
I mean, just to be up in front about it.
You've had a this is a crazy tour. But what
happened to you and the way you're going to try
and write this after the kingsy, how do you guys
keep doing this?
Speaker 3 (01:01):
Yeah? I think we're asking the same questions, but you know,
I think it's a little bit of focus, but we're
going to kind of stick to the process, and like
I think we're playing some good basketball, good Bible. On
the defensive end, we're just going to bigger patches, not.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
Scoring Jordan to take the game. The Kings are just
gone and not comfortable. It never is. But you guys
are pretty much leading up into that last quarter we
were talking about a game of runs, but you've had
these collapses before. Tell us about what peteria Kopen was
(01:38):
saying to you at the end, before the start of
the fourth. What was the process there for all of
you from coaching from the team.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
Rubin, I think you know, we get into those moments
and the bass starts getting a little bit sticky when
we're playing out how best the ball's popping around and moving.
But yeah, it's one of those things where like you're
doing so many good things and then you just let
us slip at the end. So we need to focus
on maybe maybe it's it's almost comes down to five
(02:09):
five minutes in the game.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
You said a bit sticky. I like that is that
not literally sticky, but maybe feeling the pressure and that's
why you guys can't release it. We don't get that
that transfer in such a hurry.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
Uh yeah, Like I think it does play a part, yes,
And then you know, losing a lot of close games
like that as well, it's kind of lingering in the
back of the head butt, you know, like we can't
go away from the good basketball has been playing and
(02:46):
we just need to trade you some of these over
the line.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
Looking at the season, now you've got a chance of
crawling your way back into to player for tour or
is that all but dead?
Speaker 3 (02:56):
Do you think? No? I think we do. I think
there's how many games is there? Maybe just under twenty games,
you know, so you get on a little role, get
a few back to back, get some wins in a row.
I think we could be pushing up into the planes.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
At least tell us how positive around the side of
the moment media Right straight away, I'm like, what are
you guys doing having it correct? They must be they
must be good out there, there is some success. Well
can you hang your head on in that space?
Speaker 3 (03:28):
Well, I mean, sometimes you go out of those games
and you get into video and it does look as
bad as it did look on the court. But we
did go into video and we did do a lot
of positive things, like the defensive in our coverages were
one point every time. Our rotations were good, the back
end rotations were good, and three and a half of
(03:51):
the quarters the ball was you know, flying around and
we're making shots and you know we're playing grind out basketball.
It just comes down to that five minutes and it
is hard to remember all the good things when you're
losing like that. I feel like us as a team,
we need to remember those things we.
Speaker 2 (04:11):
Had similar, didn't you Adelade and christ Church? That was
only what four points off the top of my head,
So again, couldn't get it done. And you think that
lives rent free in your head for want of a
better term, but that that nervous energy around the team
going we're going down the stretch. We've got to lead.
What are we going to do?
Speaker 3 (04:29):
Now?
Speaker 2 (04:30):
That's a hard thing to train your way out of,
isn't it?
Speaker 1 (04:32):
Surely?
Speaker 3 (04:34):
Yeah it is. And if I said it wasn't playing
on our minds, I'd be lying. But yeah, we definitely
have to change something. We definitely have to, you know,
lock in for those five minutes when we sell their
things slipping. We need to come together and you know,
recenter back to the things that we're doing well and
(04:56):
just have that belief isolate. That's all it really comes
down to, is you know, believing we can win and
pushing those close losses into wins.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
Play Wise, you've got some sign says stories. When Meninger's
on a tear, he's almost impossible to stop. As now,
I can't believe he got benched in the last quarter.
A couple of games back. I'd still be cussing that one.
But he's come on to some astonishing form, isn't he.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
No, he's a good player. He's you know, everything he
does is pointing in the right direction of him being
one of the best players in this league. You know,
he's always aggressive, he always does the right things for us,
great on the defensive end. But it all comes down to,
like he's one of the hardest workers on our team
and it shows when the bright lights come on.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
But some of the younger players, how have you looking
at development wise for the seasons to come, Because Breakers
have been a very good development team of recent times,
actually not so recent times, way back when as well.
There's some young ballers coming through that excite you.
Speaker 3 (06:00):
Yeah, there's like Sam's still young. That's the crazy thing
about it. Carlin great, great potential. He's been playing some
good bystle of this year as well. But yeah, I
have I've only been in New Zealand for the last
four or five months, but I'm hoping to get out
(06:22):
there and see somewhere of the talent coming through in
the next couple of years.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
Game against the Bullets coming up. It's part of the
Ignite Cup showdown, which I was a bit amused about
until I realized how much money's floating around. You guys
are going well on this. There's a four hundred thousand
dollars prize pool. It could take them three hundred k
as the winner. How much does that cloud your vision
(06:47):
or encourage you going into these match? What does the
coach say? Do you you forget about it? You just
take it on like a normal game. What was the
deal there?
Speaker 3 (06:56):
I'm gonna be honest. With our first Signit Cup game,
we didn't even talk about it even during the game.
We didn't know how many quarters we had. We weren't,
you know, purposely trying to win quarters. But yeah, I
think it's a good incentive and it's awesome to be
(07:17):
able to play more games during the season for the fans.
