Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Dancy Wildergrave
from News Talk.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Z'd be let's get the cricket Big Best two twenty
leagues underway. Now you've got some Kiwi reps going super
super well. Some ciphered what I clack. He the Melbourne
Renegades Master loved the one hundred and two runs off
thirty six balls.
Speaker 3 (00:28):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Only the second player I hit a T twenty century
for the Renegades after Aaron Finch, who I believe scored
two freak he enjoined us. Now have we chat about it?
Welcome to the show, tim You seeing it like a pumpkin, bro.
Speaker 1 (00:43):
Just that's it?
Speaker 3 (00:43):
Oh, you know it's yeah, it's always nice getting one
hundred and the T twenty, but the main thing is
winning the game. And you know, a good way to
start off the tournament and you know, get some good
energy in the team and some confident going forward.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
Great way for you to come back as well. After
that that finger you felt nothing there because you break
your finger just before the T twenty series against the
West Indies, so you had to set that one out.
So how much frustration was in there when you walk
down there with a bat game you will not hold
me down.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
Yeah, yeah, it never never good getting injured. You know,
there was six weeks ago now, and you know I
was not underdone coming into this tournament and I only
trained for a week basically. But you know, I've played
a lot of cricket over the last five months, so
it's not like I wasn't coming off any cricket. But
you know, sometimes as a player, just that confidence within
(01:36):
the injury and you know wanting to get you know,
the full confidence back. But yeah, it was great to yeah,
get a couple out in the middle. Figure right, You've.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
Had a wonderful last few years. Have just come into
your home. That is that maturity? Is that understanding your
own game? Is it the fact you like traveling all
around the world and being a what do they call them?
T twenty gorilla selling your services everywhere?
Speaker 3 (02:02):
Yeah, I think it's a bit of everything, to be honest.
You know, You've had a lot of cricket around the
world and in all different conditions. You've played with some
of the best cricketers in the world as well that
you that you learn off. So I think it's a
bit of everything, and you know, I still want to,
you know, push for Black Caps selection and one day
cricket as well with the One Day World Cup coming up,
(02:25):
So I definitely haven't pigeoned myself pigeonholed myself in a
T twenty position, But yeah, I think it's all helped,
you know, playing around the world and having to compete so.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
You're still available, you still want to play. There any
contact with New Zealand Cricket about where they see you
at and what they require from.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
You, yeah, I think just at the moment, you know,
our focus is the TEA twenty World Cup, so there
hasn't been much chat from a one day point of view.
You know, I've only played a handful of games, so
the main focus is the T twenty World Cup coming
up and obviously the Indian Series as well in January.
(03:04):
So that's just the focus at the moment. As the
T twenty World Cup.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
And you're in, like Flynn, you believe you're going to
be representing there two tim.
Speaker 3 (03:14):
Yeah, you'd hope. So you know, they just said had
a good last few few years and the momentum going
into the World Cup, so yeah, Rob has been a
great the last few months that he's been involved. So yeah,
it's an exciting time ahead.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
And you're a batsman not a bowler, and you must
be loving that because it's cursed to be a bowler
and you're on at the moment. They're just dropping like flies.
It's crazy, isn't it. You be watching from a far
going's it happening over there?
Speaker 3 (03:43):
Yeah, no, I fight a bowld I'd probably definitely be
in that list as well. But yeah, look, it's the
nature of the game and unfortunate that a few lads
have got injured all at once, but you know, it
shows that the stocks that we have. It's also a
great sign. You never want to get injured and you
(04:03):
feel sorry for the players that are injured. But at
the same time it's it's giving some opportunity to some
younger guys or guys that have been pushing their mark
for a long period of time, and it's only a
positive thing for Newsland cricket with the depth that we have.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
Second year of two year contract with the Renegade. Now
you decided that you weren't going to have a domestic
contract so you didn't play for Northern Districts. In retrospect,
was that a good idea? Was that a good move
for yourself, for your family, for everything.
Speaker 3 (04:32):
Yeah, I think I wouldn't have changed it, to be honest.
I think that's helped myself as a player keep on
developing and hopefully scoring runs all around the world. So yeah,
and I haven't looked back. I think it's if anything,
it's helped me push forward. And yeah, this is my
last year of this contract. Whatever happens next year, we'll
(04:58):
cross that bridge. But yeah, it's a great team to
be involved in the Renegades and excited to start the
way we have and hopefully it's a positive campaign.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
Have you been drawn into the Do we go to
the Big Bash? Do we advance the Super Smash? Do
we go to a private league because there's quite a
lot of there's quite a ruckus going on here with
the T twenty in New Zealand. Do you got any
thoughts on that? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (05:20):
I think God, New Zealan has to have a franchise tournament.
You know, the world is moving forward and to I
think compete to keep competing in the international cricket I
think it's definitely a thing that New Zealand cricket have
to have. Yeah, you look at you look at all
(05:41):
the big nations around the world they have some kind
of franchise tournament.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
And what about your colleagues, the guys you play with,
is it a general feeling around the camp might expect
it might be a little bit split. Everyone's got their
own ideas. But do you think there's a there's a
bit of momentum going towards something like that from what
you know?
Speaker 3 (06:05):
Yeah, look, guy, I haven't talk to everyone personally, but
the guys that I have, you know, it's all encouraged
and it's quite a positive chat around the playing groups.
Is that we want a franchise tournament within New Zealand.
Speaker 2 (06:21):
And Shane Shade of Fredy he got taken off for
dangerous bowling. You faced him? Was it was it really
that bad? Bro Oh?
Speaker 3 (06:33):
He got taken off with two balls above the waist,
which is which is the dangerous bowling. He was probably
a little bit unlucky on the first noball, but you
know that's the nature of the game sometimes. And yeah,
you know, you got twenty two yards to bowl the ball.
Speaker 2 (06:52):
And they describe you, I love crack in focus the
way they described players. You've probably seen this, but you've
been nicknamed Bam Bam because of your boyish looks and
ability to bash the ball. How does that sit with it?
Speaker 3 (07:06):
Yeah, well, actually Daryl Mitchell gave me that nickname a
few years ago when when Daryl was playing for n
D and I just was coming onto the the scene
with n D and you know, bam bam off the Flintstones.
So yeah, that Darryl Mitchell actually gave me that nickname,
and it's kind of stuck a little bit.
Speaker 2 (07:25):
He wasn't thinking because of your boyish looks either. I'd
say that one last thing and thanks so much for
your time. Tim. When did you realize it was your night?
Did you said, Okay, I'm seeing everything here. It's just
coming off this is me.
Speaker 1 (07:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
Look, I think it was a little bit of a
tricky wicket to start with, but it's one of those
wickets when you get in. It was a nice panning wickets.
So yeah, I mean there's a couple overs there join
the middle that we took for a big couple overs,
and then I think from then on, you know, that
was the opportunity to make it a big one.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
Yeah, and looking forward to the rest of it. One
game a night, so we got plenty to do. We've
got the world Darts Championship, but a Test cricket and
the hull of Big Bash, so couldn't be happier. Tim,
thanks so much for taking the time to speak with us.
Congratulations on the ton and we look forward to seeing
more of it in their colors and national colors as well.
Speaker 3 (08:21):
Awesome cheers, Darcy, Thank you very much.
