Speaker 1 (00:03):
Mark Pope Show tonight six o'clock. As of course, the
Cats are prepared for the SEC tournament as the guys
up you say, the tournament is upon us. High school
sports have plenty as well, girls Sweet sixteen this week
in Lexington, the regional championships for the guys tonight as
(00:24):
they prepare for the Sweet sixteen, and Lexington a little
bit later on. But there's a lot of focus around here,
of course, on college basketball. That's why I turn to
Daddy Locks. Welcome back, Daddy Locks.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
Thank you for having me Terry. Hello to you, sir.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
It was good to see you at the basketball game
over the weekend. You are a guy that the follows
the numbers, as we say, and a lot of people
come up and whisper in your ear, and I see
you whisper back in their ear, and I'm always wondering
what the heck's going on there, But you're you're giving
them some tips, aren't you? About the points spreads?
Speaker 2 (00:58):
I follow the numbers of a lot, yes, tips. I
don't know. I think they're probably trying to fade me
a little bit, so maybe I'm helping them either way.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
Anyhow, let's talk about the university of Louisville basketball program
year to year. Obviously, it was an unbelievable turnaround. How
did the betting markets respond to Louisville. They had to
be a little cautious at first, right, and then by
the season's end it was a different story.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
I think everybody was cautious because nobody really knew what
it was going to look at with a first year
coach who's coming in with an entirely new roster. So
I think even as this past week, I think Vegas
still hasn't even caught up. I mean, it was a
ten ten and a half point spread on Saturday, ended
up winning by twenty. I know the ring Smith injury
probably hurt the line a little bit. It didn't move
(01:47):
because I think it could open up at fifteen and
a half, moved down once that injury came through. But
I still think Vegas has not adjusted yet. So it's
been a good year for Daddy Locks. So I love
the un certainty that Vegas can't get in troll.
Speaker 1 (02:02):
Of Indeed, what do we know about rain Smith? By
the way, is there are we finished seeing him play?
Is that the end of it?
Speaker 2 (02:09):
I don't believe. So I did have a chance to
have a brief conversation with him after the game. He
told me he was good. It was more of a
precautionary thing. I'm sure he didn't want to have a
precautionarything on his last game ever in the Young Center,
but he did tell me that he should be okay.
And I believe it was a precautionary thing because we
didn't need him clearly against Stanford, but we do. We're
probably going to need him this week and through on
(02:32):
out because tournament time and it's March and in the
state of Kentucky. That's what it's all about.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
I'm looking at the grid right now for the acc turn.
We had the opening game Virginia Tech versus Cal. Somebody
advances there to play Stanford. So between Virginia Tech, Cal
and Stanford, one of those teams emerges to play Louisville
and they're not going to give a few of Elma trouble.
So does does rain Smith get another rest day on Thursday?
Speaker 2 (02:58):
No? I think I think they let you think they're
letting full full go. I think it's full go. They're
gonna have a lot of rest in time for that.
I do think we'll see Stanford if anybody wants to
take me up on that, but I do think Stanford
is the best of those three teams. They do have
an NBA pick in the big center they had who
had a really good game, a quiet good game against
it on Saturday. I remember at one point looking up
(03:19):
and going, wow, he's got nine rebounds. We're only halfway
through the first half of this game. So he's a
true seven foot and really good around the basket.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
Yeah, he was. I found him interesting to watch for sure.
So you think it'll Belleisville and Stanford come Thursday night,
and clearly Duke is going to advance in the ACC Tournament.
There's no two ways about that. That's just gonna happen
because they have Georgia Tech and Virginia down there, so
they're gonna win there. Who's who's going to emerge? Give
(03:50):
me the last couple of teams you think will still
be alive in the ACC Tournament.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
I don't think this is going to be any surprise
to anybody out there. But I don't think the ACC
is any good this year, So I do think it's
going to be a top heavy semi finals when it
comes to Friday night. So I do think we will
see Clemson, a game I don't really want to see
because I'm a betting man, even though I'm a dialhard
Louis fan. I think we lucked out a little bit
on that first game against Clemson, and I don't really
want to see him again. But I do believe that's
(04:17):
who we will see Friday night. Hopefully we can get
by Clemson again. Hopefully Duke will slip up, but I
do think we will see Duke in the championship of
the ACC, and I do think the University of Level
will make it to the ACC Championship Saturday night.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
Now, you're talking with your heart right there, because, like
you already noted, we're lucky to get by Clemson the
first time. They ultimately jumped us in the rankings, but
the seeding is ours because we beat them.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
Correct. Yes, but I do think looking at it, Clemson's
playing great ball. Let's not give them, let's not take
that away from him. But I do I have very
very high confidence that on the scouting report that Pat
Kelsey and his whole entire coaching staff will have, and
our guys already seen Clemson. I think our team will
be ready come Friday night. At nine thirty.
Speaker 1 (05:05):
So when the brackets are announced next Sunday, Daddy locks
there are going to be three teams in the ACC
that make it to the show. Obviously Duke, Louisville and Clemson.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
Is that it unless we have some kind of miraculous
run out of somebody like NC State did last year.
But I don't see it this year because I just
think the ACC is just so top heavy this year.
I mean, if you look at just the betting odds
on who's going to win the ACC tournament, you're looking
at a top heavy Duke at minus three twenty. Louisell's
the second choice at plus five point fifty, Clemson close
(05:35):
at plus six fifty. The then on the fourth selection
you're looking at UNC at plus three thousand. Yeah. I
mean that's a gigantic jump from the top three.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
Yeah, So that's it. Those three are going to go
dancing and that's the show there all right to the
the SEC we know is loaded. I mean it just
bounces back and forth over and over again. Should Auburn
really be ranked number one? I know they lost a
few in a row. Is Duke really better than Auburn?
Why is Duke in the number one slot only because
(06:04):
Auburn stubbed its toe.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
I think Auburn stums is so big become. They lost
two in a row last week, so that's just the
time where Duke didn't Auburn did. So now Auburn's number one.
Is anybody really looking at who's number one in the
country right now? I mean conference tournaments are about to starting,
and selection Sunday is Sunday. I don't know if anybody's
really looking at the top twenty five now. I think
it's all about seating in your conference tournament and then
(06:28):
where you're ultimately going to be seated at on Sunday.
So I don't really look at the top twenty five
anymore right now. I mean you brought up the SEC tournament.
Look at that SEC tournament. I mean it rivals some
of the old school Big East tournaments. I mean every
single game of the SEC Tournament is a probably a
must watch game.
Speaker 1 (06:44):
No doubt. Well, I was going to make the point
that Houston I think is better than one and two
in the top twenty five poll, But you know, what
are you going to do er Houston? What did they
move up to two? They I think Houston should be
one right now. Yeah, anyway, let's stick to the SEC tournament.
As noted, South Carolina stinks this year, and that's John
Caliperry's opponent. So Cale gets through the first one, doesn't he?
Speaker 2 (07:06):
You know you say that, Terry, But they just played
South Carolina two weekends ago and they were down almost thirty.
I know South Carolina. So South Carolina is bad. I
lost that day because I thought cal Perry needs some
wins to get into the tournament. It was a very
close spread. I want to say it was one and
a half two I took. I took cal Perry. I
should be smarter and not to take anybody that has
Kenny Payne on their staff. But I did that day,
(07:28):
and I paid for it. And let's see if maybe
South Carolina can do it again.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
Cal Perry famously hates the tournament. Listen to this, I
don't care about the conference tournament. He just says it
out loud. He'd rather just get ready for March Madness,
and so there you go. Okay, So well.
Speaker 2 (07:46):
He's gonna need that tournament to get in this year,
so you better start carrying about it. Yeah, Walmart, money
down there is gonna have something else to.
Speaker 1 (07:52):
Say, right, Texas Vanderbilts. Vanderbilt's been good sometimes and freaky
bad at other times. I don't know what to make.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
Of that game you're talking about. You're talking about how
your team is playing this time in March, and if
you look at Vandy, unfortunately they're starting to trim backwards.
But you don't know what Texas team will show up
or anybody in those I will call it the day
of shame games in those first that first day of
your conference tournament. So how many darts do you have?
Throw some stuff with the board, See what'll stick.
Speaker 1 (08:20):
Yep LSU, Mississippi State, nobody cares. Okay, Oklahoma and Georgia
are gonna play, and that person or that team emerges
to play UK who gets out of that game?
Speaker 2 (08:30):
Georgia. Look at what Georgia has done the last probably
three weeks, Terry, they lost four in a row, They
come back and they are currently now on a four
game winning streak, one of those being a very a
top five opponent they beat on one of the week nights.
I don't think Kentucky wants to see Georgia. I think
everybody down there and Catville is going to be root
for against Georgia because I think they are terrified to
(08:53):
see Georgia. Georgia is playing right, they need to keep
playing right to get in. You're talking about a desperate team.
Desperate teams in March are dangerous to play.
Speaker 1 (09:02):
Indeed, well, does Kentucky prevail and let's say they prevail
and it's Georgia and then there's Bama sitting there waiting
next that ain't no pick nick.
Speaker 2 (09:12):
Yeah, good luck. I mean, I think people down there
in Catville are hoping to at least attend one game
and then get to the Bama game and then they're
just probably gonna pray. Then maybe they're good that a
good Kentucky team shows up. I know they're banged up
with injuries right now, so they don't want to They
didn't want to hear about when the University of Louisal
head injuries. Now they're dealing with it, so now they
(09:32):
have to listen to that. But conference wise, tournament wise,
you just never know. And this SEC tournament is completely
wide open. You could really make some money if you
do some future wagering on who's gonna win, but it
is wide open.
Speaker 1 (09:47):
How should you do that future wagering? What do you
talk about school me future.
Speaker 2 (09:52):
So if you look at some future wagering, if you
go on to a local, if you go on sportsbooks,
sportsbooks are going to offer you who they think is
going to be the winner of the tournament, and you
can actually even parlay those with other teams. Say you're
confident that Duke is not going to slip up and
win the ACC, you could take Duke winning the ACC,
and you could take three or four teams and making
(10:13):
a parlay on a two pick parlay on who's going
to win the SEC, whether it's Auburn who's the favorite
at plus one fifty or Florida plus two seventy, and
then Bama is plus four to twenty five, and Bama
can certainly win that thing. And you're looking at a
team that's plus four to twenty five.
Speaker 1 (10:30):
Wor'st Tennessee in that one.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
In that mix, they Tennessee is right. No, Tennessee is
right below Bama at plus six hundred. But then you
go down to Kentucky. Kentucky is plus nineteen hundred. Shows
you how much confidence Vegas has on Kentucky winning this tournament.
Speaker 1 (10:47):
That is fascinating, all right, Daddy locks I appreciate the
insights on all that, and will let's make hey with
that the best we can. And I'll see you again
when I see you. But I know this is your
high holy season, so enjoy.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
What you enjoyed yourself, and then the public should enjoy it.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
As well, if that's coming the year, see us soon,
all right. That's my that's my buddy, Daddy Locks. He
loves talking about the games and the spreads back in
a minute on news radio WAD forty WHS
