Speaker 1 (00:00):
Rainy days and Mondays always make me happy. When somebody
brings chicken wings in pizza, that's nice. Who cares Monday?
Buh buh. And now everybody's happy. They're rolling around our
office because Paul Barry Barrier just brought in. You know,
I'd say it both ways. Welcome to my studio. I
appreciate you, thank you very much. Good to have you here.

(00:21):
The apron Ink Happy Our friend Razor is coming up
in a couple of days. Dan Dry, the legendary photographer,
is in the studio with me. Because you are on
the apron Ink board, I.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Am on the apron Inc Board and have a big
photo show coming up at Paul's place on Wednesday, and
we hope everybody will come out. We're doing a happy
hour for apron Things start at five. I'm going to
have some of my favorite Kentucky photos on display. Stuff
from Churchill, stuff from Woodbird, stuff from around the city.

(00:59):
And Paul and I curated this show together. Everything is
on canvas. Everything is huge, forty by thirty inches.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
Oh wow, the big ones.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
And the mounting and the canvas style and everything should
clay museum quality, so it should be a fun time.
I hopeful a lot of folks will come out and
hang out and look at the work. I'm going to
speak a little bit about the work, and I can
promise you there will be plenty of good food and

(01:32):
libation to have.

Speaker 1 (01:33):
Well, that's what Paul is all about. Tell me again
about your place. You're the Combo distillery and brewery in restaurant.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
Yes, sir, we're the only restaurant brewery and distillery in Louisville.
So we make our own spirits on site, make all
of our beers on site, and all of our food
is fresh and made by hand.

Speaker 1 (01:54):
It's called Hey daddy, his daughter's anyone. She's so cute.
We gave her some Halloween candy? Are you mad about that?
Paul was on that spot. Usually I asked to be
mad at bedtime. Yeah, I usually ask parents, is this okay?
But your daughter came in and she just looked at
me and I said, I got Halloween eats, and she's
just like arms up, let's go.

Speaker 3 (02:13):
She loves her Halloween candy.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
Peach this year, she's that she's kissing daddy right, and
then she's my best friend. You're a beautiful baby. Uh Hey, Paul,
so hop Atomica is there at that the old textile
mill right at Goss Avenue and McHenry is that it?
That's it.

Speaker 3 (02:33):
So we're the uh right in the parking lot of
the Germantown Mill offs right off Goss Avenue.

Speaker 1 (02:38):
So if you don't like hawks, yeah, the famous area,
it really is. Everybody just referbed that whole area looks
so good.

Speaker 3 (02:47):
Is We're about to get two new restaurants down in
that area. So we're excited for for all the other places.

Speaker 1 (02:52):
So are you in there like a baker or are
you in there making stuff at three in the morning.
You gotta take care of your little angel daughter.

Speaker 3 (02:57):
That's right. Luckily there's better people than me made the
food and beverages. But every now and then, when Caroline
pulls me in for an early morning show, I get
to throw a pizza in the oven. So we got
a big fired pizza oven. It's seven feet deep, five
feet wide.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
Dude, you brought some chicken wings and that pizza was great.
I tasted that and a chicken wings.

Speaker 3 (03:15):
Those wings we smoke them out back. They're fresh. We
got a Togarashi dry rub, and then we've got four
or five different sauces. You can toss them in.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
That rub on there. That was tasty. That was that
was had a good kick. Everybody's walking around with this
big smile on their face because they're enjoying the food.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
It great, great food, amazing.

Speaker 1 (03:34):
No doubt about it. So what's the plan here on Wednesday?
People see your photos and then what else are we?
Are we drinking and eating here?

Speaker 3 (03:41):
Yeah, So we're fortunate to be able to sponsor the
aprin Inc Happy Hour from five thirty to seven thirty.
The exhibition and art show starts at five pm and
a little bit later than the happy hour at eight thirty,
and we're just going to feature a lot of Dan's
artwork which will be for sale. A portion of all
those paintings that are sold will go back to apron Ink.

(04:03):
We're going to have ten or twelve different distilleries that
are going to be pouring free samples for people to
taste from around town. And then we're going to have
all of our fall seasonal cocktails available as well, excell
addition to our fall pizza menu.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
Adan, you are on the board of Apernink. Let's explain
to people what that does.

Speaker 2 (04:21):
So apron Inc is an amazing organization that is here
to help out people who work at independently owned Louisville restaurants.
No chains, everything's independent, everything's local. When someone has some
type of an issue, perhaps they get cancer, perhaps something

(04:45):
happens to one of their children, perhaps their house burns down.
And in many cases, a lot of these folks do
not have much of a savings, they don't have insurance,
so we give them a one time grant. Don't give
them the money, We pay the bill the bill. We've
been around thirteen years and then thirteen years Terry. We've

(05:09):
given over one point three million dollars out in grants.
If you'll remember last March with all the flooding, all
of those River Road restaurants were closed and the folks
couldn't work. So we stepped in. Who applied for gramps
We helped out. Yep, there's some type of emergency situation

(05:36):
that comes up.

Speaker 1 (05:37):
We say that.

Speaker 2 (05:38):
We are there to serve those who serve others.

Speaker 1 (05:42):
You're a safety net for a lot of folks find
themselves in tough times. And Paul, how is our distillery growth?
It's going nuts here, isn't it? Isn't it still growing?

Speaker 3 (05:53):
It really is, So, you know, Louis's definitely expanding the
hotel capacity. I think it's get into the busiest season
four distiller is here in Louisville.

Speaker 1 (06:03):
Yeah, people people are telling me. People are coming from
around the world. They just want to go around and
taste all of the offerings that are available all through here.
And people will do like bachelor parties or bachelorette parties,
and they'll they'll fly here and just do this whole
deal for a day or two they do.

Speaker 3 (06:17):
It's quickly becoming a big bachelorette bachelor party spot.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
Yeah, well that's awesome. Where'd you get the name hop Atonica?

Speaker 3 (06:25):
So hop Atomica came from kind of two merges. So
hop is for the beer, of course, and then atomica
kind of goes into our mid century modern aesthetic. It's
the there's so much math and science involved in brewing
and distilling that just really kind of reminded us of
the atomic era. So I got you, it's hop atomic.

Speaker 1 (06:45):
And what did you do? You learn it the feet
of some master distiller or you're so, how are you
bitten by the buck?

Speaker 3 (06:52):
So my business partner, Kenneth, he's actually the beer guy.
I'm more of the spirits, the cocktails, and on that
side of it. But so we've got a brewer or
master distiller, master brewer. His name is j D. And
he is by far the best brewer I've ever seen.

Speaker 1 (07:09):
Has he ever told you what JD stands for? He has? Okay,
don't share it. Let it be his secret. That's all good.
But sometimes people are very enigmatic. They don't want you
to know that there's names actually attached to those letters.

Speaker 3 (07:22):
Yep, you know what. Honestly, I don't know what the
D stands for. I know what the J is, okay,
but as I think about it, I don't know.

Speaker 1 (07:27):
What the and just invent any word you want. That's
it today.

Speaker 3 (07:30):
It depends on the day.

Speaker 1 (07:31):
That's good. You got great people working there. They're creating
incredible fluids, beautiful drinks of all kinds. Yes, sir, and
I can attest to your beer and wings. That was
pretty good. That's pretty awesome. And you make beautiful daughters too.

Speaker 3 (07:44):
Well. Luckily she looks like my wife, so that's why
she's so that's.

Speaker 1 (07:47):
How that works, all right. Don't miss this. It's Wednesday,
this coming Wednesday, five till eight thirty pm. Because Dan
Drive's exhibit is one to be seen. You handed me
this this leaflet here, and it's got a picture of
all on it putting his tape on his hands before
a fight in you said at Trinity High School?

Speaker 2 (08:05):
Was it Trinity High School?

Speaker 1 (08:07):
Terry?

Speaker 2 (08:07):
And you will probably remember a boxer who is no
longer with us, but at that time was unknown Greg Page,
of course, and he was doing an exhibition match with
Greg Page. I went into the restroom and photographed him
taping his taping his hands for frames and the rest

(08:30):
of its kind of history. The company that I'm with,
Price Weber Marketing and Advertising. We donate these to different
charities and that photo has raised tens and tens and
tens and tens of thousands of doll dollars in various
charity auctions. Test it's also eight peet tall out at

(08:51):
the airport. So that's probably the most famous person you
ever photographed, then, right, I would say, hands down.

Speaker 1 (08:57):
So you didn't get a chance to see Queen las
with at the derby. I'm guessing I knew he'd have
a story. I actually photographed Queen Elizabeth and Princess die
and of course King Charles I when I was with
the actional geographic doing work in England, so thank you
for bringing that up. I knew you'd been around in

(09:20):
some houtare payments right. Ollie is still a global icon
that's been the years after passing too. All good totally
and DREI great to see you again, you too, Paul
and your sweet daughter. Good to have you guys here.

Speaker 1 (09:42):

Speaker 3 (09:46):
