(00:00):
All right, John Shannon, thanksa ton. You're with these radio eight
forty w h H s Dominique Yates. It's a sports reporter for w l
K. Why and I always likewhen he jumps on with us to chew
on sports. Hey, Dom,you're at Valhalla? Have been at Valhalla
this week already? Yes, sir, I'm here now, Terry checking out
(00:21):
the sites. Thankfully the rain isgone, but uh, yeah, it's
beautiful out here. What's the sensewhen people are talking about how much water
it'll be? It's the ball sticksmore like when they hit a shot and
it just sticks like into the greena little bit better, doesn't roll through.
Is that the hope that if there'srain, that they can control those
(00:43):
shots? Yeah? I mean thatthat's really is the hope. It's it's
such a crapshoot with this weather. And you know, even today I saw
some of the workers having like leapblowers on the on the green, just
trying to help with it as bestthey can. But you know, I
guess the mat that they're hoping asthat mother nature holds off. But yeah,
that's kind of the key there. They're gonna try and do that,
(01:04):
but at least as of now,the golfers don't seem too concerned about it.
And you know, we talked toScotty Cheffer and a lot of those
guys in the pressure today and yeah, they don't seem too worried about the
weather. Okay, I haven't heardany of this Scheffler audio yet. What
did he have to say give uskind of an overview. It's really fascinating
because number one, you know,he's the best golfer on the planet right
(01:26):
now. But Scotty was just talkingabout being a dad and being a husband
and how it was tough for himto leave his newborn son on Monday to
come here. But he did sayit gave him a new sense of purpose
to continually keep that competitive fire andtry to be the best at what he
does. So it was kind ofcool to hear about that. It wasn't
(01:47):
a lot talk a lot of talkabout golf. You know, he did
kind of get into the course alittle bit. He's never you know,
been or played here before, sohe did kind of get a sense of
it. I think he had nineholes today, had nine yesterday. So
honestly, the main thing people werejust kind of getting a sense of was
just Scotty the human being, andit was pretty fascinating. These guys are
(02:07):
you know, very successful and havea lot of money and you know,
have a lot of attention from fans, but they're you know, just dudes
that are just kind of enjoying, you know, these experiences, just like
an average fan would be. Yeahtoo, Like in basketball, obviously,
the floors ninety feet long, youknow, the parameters, the rims ten
feet high. But even in individualsports, a tennis courts the same thing.
(02:28):
No matter where you are, windcould be a factor. But in
golf, each place has a uniquefootprint. So for Scheffler to never be
here before, it's interesting to seehow quickly he takes that in knows tries
to figure out where the trouble spotsare. And I was saying this on
the air the other day, I'msurprised they don't hire a local caddy as
like an accessory team member, tojust give them the overview of the areas
(02:53):
to stay out of. Wouldn't thatmake sense? Good point? Yeah,
it'd be a great point, becausei mean even we talked Tiger Woods today
and he made the point of like, yeah, you know, he was
here, you know, twenty fouryears ago when he participated, and even
since then, the course looks bigger, it's more spread out. It's like
there's more longer walks, and thejust things just a little bit differently.
(03:15):
So yeah, I think so.I mean, even for me as just
the media guy walking around here,I'd love to have someone let me know
what in the world I'm doing forTiger back everywhere I go. Though.
For Tiger, obviously, you know, he's had so much greatness. He's
been at the pinnacle of the gamefor so long, and now you know
(03:36):
he can't be that guy that hewas before. It has to be a
little bit disheartening, I would think, to just be to think I was
the king of this for so longand now I'm hoping to make the cut
and also hoping I can walk upand down these hills and not have my
body break down. You know. It's funny, before his press conference,
(03:59):
I figured that would be his samementality or attitude or belief. But no,
I mean, obviously I didn't knowwhat Tiger was like all of you
know, ten fifteen years ago.But the guy that I saw interacting with,
you know, fans and doing mediaand stuff, it's just such a
different guy. I guess you couldtell that he knows he's near the end
of his career. But you seea guy that's just very humble, that
(04:21):
seems very gracious. You know.He was asked about just the amount of
fans that follow him on the practiceround. I don't know if you saw
any photos or videos of that, but like I said, you got Scotti,
Scheffler and Brooks kept and all thesegreats and some of the best you
know in the country participating, buteveryone was watching Tiger. And he talked
about that gratitude and he said, you know, ten years ago, I
(04:43):
probably wouldn't have even care to payattention, but right now, he said,
it really means a lot. Andit was, like I said,
it was really cool to see Imean, in my opinion, to go
just kind of like a typical guy, you know, just kind of like,
hi, I'm Tiger, and like, yes, we know who you
are. Right. The thing is, you know, back when you were
a little kid, or maybe evenbefore you were born, Tiger on Sunday,
(05:09):
let's say in the year two thousandon Sunday, people would just fall
out of the way. Now thatdidn't happen in Louisville. He got into
a playoff with Bob May but inthe other majors, I mean, he
was blowing people out of the water. He was winning by fifteen strokes.
So when he'd show up on Sunday, it was like, get out of
the way, who's playing for second? You know, That's the way that
was. So he was absolutely incommand of the course. And so that's
(05:32):
the stem I'm talking about that isno longer there. Nobody's afraid of him
anymore, and that's got to beweird for him psychologically, it is,
I would imagine. I do knowthat the other golfers they do you say
understand you say the aura that comeswith Tiger. You know, Justin Thomas
was talking today and he's like, you know, man, I was here
(05:53):
at this course as a little kidin two thousand watching Tiger in that playoff,
and now you say, I'm friendswith him and playing again. So
there is still that cool mystique abouthim, which again it is very fascinating
because, like you said, hislevel of play even he is not even
close to the same. But Idon't know something about when you see Tiger
Woods, people just kind of stopand see what happened. So stranger things
(06:15):
and crazier things have happened in theworld of sports. You know, I
don't think it will happen, butwho knows what might happen if Tiger gets
to that final day. We're speakingof Dominic Yates from w l K.
Y Xander Schoffley. Did he windup speaking to the media today or is
that that get moved to tomorrow? That did get moved so I believe it
was that Ricky Fowlard. A fewothers were moved to tomorrow. So yeah,
(06:39):
with the weather, thing just kindof went up and down, and
those horns came off around like ninepoint fifty this morning. You know,
people just had to stop what theywere doing. So we weren't able to
talk to Scheffler and Tiger, JohnRahmins and guys like that, But a
few of those others will be movedto tomorrow. Yeah, Ram's at the
top of the mountain too, andthis guy Shoffley was right there over the
weekend. I mean he and overin Charlotte, North Carolina. I mean
(07:01):
he's in the lead. And thensuddenly Rory just chipped away boom boom,
boom boom, and then took itaway from him. So Shoffley's got to
be seething waiting to come back outhere because he's he knows his game is
together right now. So that'll beinteresting to see what he has to say.
Yeah, I think that's the funpart about such just a mental part
that goes into the game of golf. Sometimes it feels like it is more
(07:24):
mental than physical. And so I'mcurious about, like how some of these
golfers with things that are you know, happened in previous events and tournaments,
you know, how the approach willcome with the PGA, even like justin
Thomas, he's in his hometown. You know, he's played better golf,
but he still hasn't been able toget the results he wants. So I'm
wondering, you know what, mentally, you know, what his approach would
(07:46):
be like heading into Thursday. Sothere's a lot of guys that it's gonna
be fun to see, no doubt, And and it's no secret that Live
and the PGA are trying to actlike they're they're working together now, but
really they're not. There's there's noway the PGA Championship organizers want a Live
guy to win and there's a lotof a innu it. So that's another
(08:07):
thing that's just a little quiet dramathat's going on. So we'll see how
it all plays out. I'm lookingforward to it. I did too,
and it was fun when that occasionalquestion would come up to some of the
golfers and I said, I'm notgoing to get into that right now.
You know, take the high road, which is smart. You know,
I probably should be taking some ofthat to buy sometimes and just not talk.
But you know, you know me, Terry, you know how you
(08:30):
gotta do it. Just don't bethe one that asked Rory, because Rory's
talking to the media tomorrow too.Correct, they moved him. Yeah,
don't ask him about his private life. They've already said that he filed for
divorce yesterday and that he's not goingto speak on it publicly anymore. But
somebody in that room is going tobring it up. I don't want it
to be you. I don't wantto see you get punched in a face
(08:52):
by some security I will not begoing viral. No, I can assure
you that no viral moments from me. You know, my rule is he's
not gonna ask about my dating life, so I want to ask about him.
Well played, Dominique, thanks abunch, Thank you always a pleasure.
You bet you. Dominique Yates fromw lky Li. I'm from Valhalla Golf Club
