Speaker 1 (00:00):
I want to welcome in my new best friend, Evelyn
Gregray Simmons College. Is nice to see you. Is it
too soon for me to call you my best friend?
Because I feel that at all. Thank you very much.
You are a filmmaker, you're a producer, you do a
little bit of everything. I have you listed as the
director of the Black Film Institute at Simmons College of Kentucky.
(00:20):
That is correct, that is awesome. All right. So your
love of film started when.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
Probably when I was like ten, yeah, very young. I
love movies, love movies, love storytelling.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
So and you felt drawn to that, you could feel it.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
I did. I felt I could.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
I liked writing and putting stories together, even if it
didn't make sense back then. But I love writing, love
creating stories, love putting them together.
Speaker 1 (00:50):
So like, yeah, I hear that your latest baby is
going to be premiere soon at Louisville's Slugger. Is that
where it is?
Speaker 3 (00:57):
That's all right, Louisville Slugger Museum.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
The museum, and obviously it has to be baseball oriented.
And we're talking about the Negro leagues from the forties, thirties, fifty.
Speaker 3 (01:06):
When that's all right. In the nineteen forties.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
Tell me about the germ of the idea and then
how you followed through.
Speaker 3 (01:12):
Yeah, so I tell this story like it's nothing grand.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
We were, you know, going through COVID and I was
going back home. My home is Cleveland, and I said,
I wanted to take my kids to learn more about
their history from their mom's hometown. And I started looking
up different things to do, different things to teach them,
and I came across the article about the Cleveland Buck guys.
And I am a huge sports fan, huge Cleveland sports fan,
(01:37):
Like I love my Cleveland sports. And I said, a
championship that I didn't know about, and we know that,
like Cleveland needs all the championships we can have, and
so that's what, you know, drew me to it because
I mean, I love all of sports. And when I
found out about that, I took the kids. I found
(01:58):
out that the feel that they played in was still
standing and it was a museum, and I was like, well,
we're going to go here. I went there just to
be on the field that they played on. It was
just so moving, and I'm like, I'm going to tell
the story. I wanted to tell the story because I
said I didn't know about it growing up. It would
have been very inspirational to know about it going up.
(02:19):
And I said, this may be inspirational for others.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
Were you able to find any players who are still alive?
Speaker 3 (02:25):
No, no, I was not.
Speaker 2 (02:28):
I did find Quincy Troop's son, and that was amazing
because Quincy Troop was a huge factor, huge impact on
that team, on that championship team as well.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
So the Cleveland buck Eyes, did they happen to play
in any kind of a league that would have connected
them to a team in Louisville or in Kentucky somewhere.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
So the one little secret fun fact about the Cleveland
buck guys is that when they played their last few games,
they relocated Louisville.
Speaker 3 (03:01):
Yay. They played right at the Parcoway.
Speaker 1 (03:05):
Field of course, down there by U.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
Of L exactly exactly.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
So that was it was really it was just like
fate that, like, I'm here in Louisville and then to
find out about that story there and to find out
they had a connection here.
Speaker 1 (03:16):
So Simmons College is such a you know, renowned and
loved institution here. I'm so glad you're a part of that.

Institute at Simmons.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
So it's a fairly new program. It got started before
I arrived, so you know, I can't take the credit
for its starting. But once I found out about it
and that it was new and that they were all
about storytelling and unearthing stories that had and I've ever
been told before, I was definitely on. I probably was
bugging them when I was getting hoping getting an interview.
(04:01):
So it's fantastic to be a part of They started
out with an episode about the Black Jockeys. Coming up,
we're going to do a full episode about the history
of Simmons College and we're going to peace out like
all of the small stories that you know, people don't
know that comes out of Simmons.
Speaker 1 (04:20):
The whole thing of Simmons and U of L and
it's partnership from way back when and the medical connection
between in the medical school and that's all just fascinating,
and of course the Black Jockeys. Look, I'm getting a
return text from someone you know, the boss the black
jockey story is so so important too in launching the whole.
(04:42):
You know, we all love the Kentucky Derby and it
goes back to a time where all the jockeys were
black and there are a lot of heroes among that core.
