(00:00):
And we've got a Kentucky national champion. His name's Jack Gibbons. You know
him as Goosegivens, perhaps Jack.Welcome back, Hey, Terry, thanks
so much for having me on.I know you're having a book signing here
at seven o'clock today Carmichael's Bookstore onFrankfurt Avenue. Your book is called they
call me Goose. We'll talk aboutthat in a minute. It is.
I want to get your thoughts onthe news of the day, read Shepherd

(00:20):
out. I don't think that's abig surprise. How do you think he'll
do? You know, I thinkReid will do. I think he'll do
just fine, Terry. I'm lookingforward to saying what he might be able
to do. Yeah, it's nota real surprise, I mean, and

(00:41):
I would be more surprised if hehad come back, because he would have
had to come back if he did, at the encouragement of his dad and
of Mark, and both of thoseguys have played in the NBA. Both
of them know that the NBA it'sall about opportunity, and I couldn't imagine

(01:03):
either one of them trying to talkRead out of taking advantage of this opportunity.
That's right here for him now.So I think he'll do fine.
He's going to have to make somebig time adjustments. I don't think there's
any question about that. He's gotto get better in a number of areas.
Defensively, he's got to get better. You know, he's planning against

(01:25):
some pretty good dudes, man,So it's going to be it's going to
be an adjustment period for sure. What about the adjustment for Mark Pope?
He played at UK, but coachingthis with this fan base that's so animated
is a different kind of a pressurecooker than it is out at BYU.

(01:45):
So you think that Mark is preparedfor all the heat that comes with this
job. Well, the good thingis Mark knows the heat that comes with
the job. I thought it wasinteresting that he one of the first things
he said was that most coaches ina new coaching position like he's in h
tries their best to temper the expectationsof the fans. Uh. He said,

(02:09):
I know there's no way to dothat, So I'm gonna I'm going
to accept that responsibility and I'm readyto go. I think Mark will do
fine. I think he's gonna haveplenty of players that can play. I
know he's a really really good basketballcoach. His real challenge right now,

(02:30):
most people talk about what players you'regonna have. The real problem is what
coaches will he gets, because you'regonna have to have people to go get
these players. You're gonna have tohave some coaches who can relate, who
can go out and get down anddirty in some areas that are not,
you know, real favorable to alot of people. So he's gonna have

(02:53):
to bring in some really really goodcoaches who can go who know where to
find the players and can go getthem right. And then we don't know
exactly who Cal's taking or what, you know, all that stuff's in flux,
So it's just going to be fascinatingto watch all this unfold. Yeah
yeah, but I don't know thatMark's going to necessarily wait to see what

(03:19):
and who coach Kyle takes with him. I would kind of think he would
like to have maybe one guy fromwho was here during the CAL period that
is a connection to the not somuch future players, but a connection to
the former players who could make surethat they feel comfortable and they know they
are still welcome and still invited tobe a part of the program. I

(03:46):
don't know who might be available, but there are some really, really good,
good guys out there, a lotof good guys who have called and
wanted to find out about getting thisjob. So I don't think he'll have
a hard time getting people. Ithink picking the right couple guys to come
into are going to be crucial forhim. Yeah, and the style that

(04:08):
Mark's going to apply is going tobe different than cal So it's all going
to be fun. I think forthe fan base and everybody to just see
this evolution now that all the arguing'sover, because everybody, I don't want
this guy, I want that guy, and so you know all so all
that's been put to bed, sonow people can all look forward. Yeah,
and I said this the other dayTerry Luck. I'm I'm very very

(04:30):
pleased with Mark Pope as our newcoach. I really didn't want to necessarily
go and write a mega megachech.I mean eleven some of the numbers they
were talking about, eleven, thirteen, fifteen million to Hurley. I mean,
come on, man, in mymind and I get it, I

(04:53):
understand that I'm a Kentucky I'm Kentucky, But in my mind Kentucky Basketball,
and the program is still Kentucky Basketballin the program, and there are bunches
and bunches and bunches of really goodcoaches out there who would love the opportunity
to come in here and coach withouthaving to rob the bank to get them

(05:15):
to come here. So I'm reallyhappy that that didn't happen because I didn't
want to be wondering if the guy'shere because he wants to be here,
or is he here because of thepaycheck man. He wanted a big check,
And I have no question with MarkPope about that. Mark wanted the
job. He would have crawled toLexington to get the job. He's been

(05:36):
looking over his shoulder at this positionfor a long long time. So I
don't think we could have done muchbetter after those first two or three names
where he eliminated. I'm very happywe got who we got. We're speaking
with Jack Gibbons, Goose Gibbons. His book is called Call Me Goose,
My Life in Kentucky Basketball and Beyond, and you just open up your I

(06:00):
want people to know that they canmeet you tonight in just a little over
an hour, starting seven o'clock atCarmichael's bookstore on Frankfort Avenue. Yeah,
yeah, you're telling your story, though you tell a lot of tough stuff
that's happened in your life. Well, I don't know that I could have
done the book, and I apologize. I'm sitting out in front of Portini's

(06:25):
over here and the block down fromCarmichael, so you probably hear the cars
and stuff going by. But Icouldn't have really done the book without going
into some stuff that has happened inmy life. You know, I've been
so blessed. I've had a wonderfullife, and I don't know how you

(06:48):
can really appreciate how good it isunless you have experienced some tough times.
And yeah, there are things thatI've gone through that I would rather not
have gone through. But all ofthose things have kind of formed me and
helped me to be the person Iam today. And you know, I

(07:13):
listen, I complain, and Italk about stuff in the book that happened
and some things I never talked aboutto anybody outside my family, never talked
to about that before openly. Butit was so therapeutic. Man, once
I unloaded some of the stuff thatI didn't even know was in there in

(07:33):
some cases. Man, But afterI unloaded some stuff, I wish I
could tell you how good I feltafter going through that. But my co
writer, Doug brunk Man, hewas so good. He was so good
at making sure that if I saidthe sky was blue, he'd said,

(07:58):
yeah, But other than in cloud, what shade of blue is it?
I mean, is it? Isit foggy in the back? I mean
he made me go into stuff thatI wouldn't even have thought about going to,
and I really wouldn't have thought itwas important. But but yeah,
I mean it's I'm really happy withthe finished product, and I'm glad we
got into everything we got into inthe book. Well it is, it's

(08:22):
it's there's a lot of great content. I really enjoyed it. The books
called they call me Goose, mylife in Kentucky, Basketball and Beyond.
And that's Jack Gibbons where you cango meet meet him in just a few
minutes. Jacket is great talking toyou again and very good. Much success
with the book, and we'll obviouslybe listening for you on the radio calls
again this fall. Always good tobe on with you. Did someoney tell

(08:46):
me? Coach Hall called you fromheaven that happened one time. I don't
know how, I don't know.I need to I need to hear that.
Man, I know you, Iknow what happened, and he's that
kind of guy. But they toldme it was great, so I need
to hear that. One of thesedays, you can send it to me.
I will send you that, Jackpromise. Take care, bro,

(09:09):
