Speaker 1 (00:00):
Oh, it's a pleasure to speak with Jack Goose Givens,
nineteen seventy eight national champion for the University of Kentucky Wildcats.
He went on and had an NBA career, of course,
and now is on the Electric radio with Tom Leach
to call those basketball games for the Cats. Hey, Jack,
welcome back.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
Hello Terry. How are you man?
Speaker 1 (00:21):
Life's good. We both got vacation time in. You're all
rested up and ready to go now.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
Right, I am ready to go, man. I've been ripping
and running following the grand kids around all summer with
their sports t ball, volleyball, bat now basketball. It's been
a busy but very enjoyable summer.
Speaker 1 (00:47):
That's very rewarding. When you get to go out and
see grandkids do their thing and just move into their
own that's phenomenal.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
Yeah, yeah, it really is. And you know, it's amazing
how much they love having you there. I mean, they
they want you at their games. They want to look
up in the stands and and understand that Papa's here
or Gg's here. I mean, it's it's a great way
(01:17):
to uh, to uh, just to live because so much
of our life now is wrapped around our grandkids, my
son who lives uh there in Louisville, Jeremy and Alex.
They have a couple of uh really little ones three
and four months, you know, two and a half and
(01:38):
four months, so I get to come there and see
them all the time as well. So uh, it's a
it's a great way to live, as you as you
get up in in the years.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
You know. Yeah, I haven't been lucky yet, but I
got kids, and so eventually I'll get grandkids out of
this deal, that's for sure. And how did you settle
on Papa?
Speaker 2 (02:00):
Well, I really I really don't know, Terry. It was
you know, I didn't want to be called some of
the other names that we get stuck with scranparents, you know. Uh,
I just I just didn't uh And uh, I said,
(02:20):
well just call me Papa, because it's just it just
kind of fit, you know what I mean. So that's
kind of how I got that, And and thank goodness,
I did, you know. I mean, it's it's really interesting
because not only do my grandkids, uh friends call me papa,
(02:42):
my son and daughter you know there they're friends and spouses,
they called me papa as well, you know, so it
just kind of stuck, stuck with.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
Me, So Goots has flown away. I guess no one
calls you that anymore.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
Well, the kids don't. Let's put it like that. A
lot of people, a lot of people still do. But
but the kids, the kids don't call me that.
Speaker 1 (03:10):
Yeah, I've called you Jack all these years that I've
known you, and I just like it that way. All right,
let's jump into what's happening here. I saw Mark Pope
online a little while ago. He is helping Jaden Quaintance
today get ready for his driver's test tomorrow. I love
this coach. He's involved in every phase of their lives.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
Yeah, you know, I was then watching practice today and
at the end of practice, he called the team together
and they went over. They have a TV monitor over
in the corner, and I was just a out of
earshot of what they were talking about. And that was
this diagram on this on the on the monitor, and
(03:54):
and you know, it was green and red and had
all of this stuff. And what it turned and what
I found out was that he's going down to trying
to get his license. They set up what would you
call it, just a little driving yeah, grid model, a grid,
(04:14):
that's the word I'm looking for over at the football
stadium and they were walking through it and Coach Pope
said he's a little concern about him passing, but they
all wished him well as he was going down to
get his license.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
Well, we've all been nervous at that point before too.
But this looks like Mark Pope's put together a heck
of a team for this fall. I mean, people have
to be excited about the talent level of all these
different guys stepping up.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
Yeah, and you know, it was really neat to watch
Mark last year because he had to start from scratch.
He didn't have a thing, as was the case pretty
much with your coach there in Louisville. He had to
are from scratch as well. And you know, there were
a lot of question Marks, man, what does this seem
(05:06):
going to be like? What? Mark hadn't wanted a tournament game,
He hadn't done this, he hasn't done that. And I
just kept telling people, listen, Mark is going to be fine.
And he proved as proved me right, and proved a
lot of other people who had confidence Mitch and others
(05:28):
who hit confidence in his coaching ability. And I think
he's he's done an even better job of putting together
a team with what I've seen this summer, and these
guys are are exciting to watch. We have a group
(05:48):
of much better athletes from from start to from the
top to the bottom, however you want to start that. Man,
we're very athletic, quick shoot the ball well, even though
we don't have you know, we don't have a Kobe
on this team who everybody's gonna have to double team that.
(06:10):
I mean, we saw him go through that last year.
But we do have more people on the team who
can make shots, so I think the same effect will
will be felt with this team this year. This is
going to be a fun, fun team to watch and
should be very very good defensively.
Speaker 1 (06:31):
And Otaga away coming back was a huge deal. I mean,
this guy last year obviously brought so many thrilling finishes
to games. But to have him, you know, out there
thinking well I might go and then to come back,
I see a lot of leadership there, don't you.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
Yeah, I think I think he's going to be a
real key And you know, people people ask me, well,
how many points is he going to have to average
this year to really prove his work to this team?
And I think Terry, if he can average the same
(07:08):
number of points he averaged last year, I mean, we
don't need him averaging twenty two to twenty three, twenty
five and be nice. Don't get me wrong, but if
he's averaging that many points, a lot of these other
pieces that Mark has and on this team are are
(07:28):
not going to reach the potential I see some of
these guys reaching. I think what the league, what the
next level is looking for is not how many he averages,
but how does he get those points? And they do
want to know that he shoots the ball better, that
he gets his shot off quicker, that he is even
(07:52):
more athletic than he was last year, and he was
a great athlete, no question about it. They want to
see how he scores, even more so than how many
points he scores. And the rest of his game needs
to improve as well. Is his rebounding, his defense. I
(08:13):
see all of that getting better for him. But it
was a big deal to get him to come back.
Man he was. He proved himself. He was a surprise
maybe of the SEC with the way he played last year.
And for sure Kentucky didn't do what they did last
(08:33):
year without him stepping up and becoming the player he became.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
Tell me about Jaden Quainton's on the floor.
Speaker 2 (08:40):
Well, I haven't seen him yet, of course, because he's
he's just not quite ready to go. Although he's up
and he's dribbling the ball and he's going through some movement,
not running, not that kind of stuff yet. He didn't today,
but he dribbled. He kind of moved on it a
(09:06):
little bit more than he has that I've seen to
this point. So he's coming along. They will not, believe me,
they will not rush him, one bet. A couple of
the young guys have played so much better than I
ever thought. Malachamarino one of those bigs who really really
(09:30):
has has proven to be, at least to this point,
better than I thought he would be. You don't have
to rush him. You don't have to of course, Brandon Garrison,
he's going to get a lot of minutes early too,
so they are not going to rush him. You can
bank on that.
Speaker 1 (09:49):
So Jayden can just practice his driving for a while
and we'll and I literally, I mean a car, not
driving in a game.
Speaker 2 (09:55):
So he yeah, yeah, I was. I was listening to
that and I thought, man, I wonder how many of
these guys have had him out driving, whether they should
or not, how many of these guys have had him
out driving and putting him through through some of the
things he's going to have to go through driving. One
(10:16):
thing good about Florida when it comes to driver's licenses,
and I'll leave it alone. I don't think they make
you parallel park down there, so he won't have to
worry about he won't have to worry about that part
of the driving test.
Speaker 1 (10:30):
Who did you see today? That's a great shooter that
surprised you?
Speaker 2 (10:35):
Well, I have been listen. I know Trent Noah and
I've seen him and so I'm not surprised at the
fact that he makes shots as well almost as anybody
else in practice. But the guy who has surprised me
(10:55):
is Denzel Everden Eberdeen. I mean, Denzel can really really
shoot that thing, and he has that dog in him
that I really like to see, especially at that guard spot.
But he's coming off a national championship, so this is
(11:15):
probably gonna sound a little weird for me to say,
but he's kind of playing with a chip on his shoulder,
man like like he he still wants to prove himself
and He goes hard every play, never takes a playoff,
but his shooting has I mean, I remember him playing
(11:39):
and Florida had so many great guards last year, but
he's a much much better shooter than I ever thought
he would. And the guy that I you know, I
don't know, but the guy who could really really be
the difference maker for this team is Cam Williams. Now,
you're talking about a guy who can who can shoot
(12:02):
the ball. Matter of fact, I don't want to put
him in a box because he knows how to play
on the offensive end of the floor. He scores a
lot of different ways, but he shoots it well also,
so I'm ain't just to see Cam play. He he
he could be. He could be as big as surprise
(12:23):
this year as Otega was last year.
Speaker 1 (12:25):
Fantastic. He's from Tulane six eight I think so so
yeah yeah.
Speaker 2 (12:29):
Six eight, big eight smooth. I call him uh uh. Now,
I haven't told him this yet because I haven't had
a chance to talk to him a whole lot, but
I liken him to to Kevin Durant.
Speaker 1 (12:43):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (12:44):
Uh a multi talented offensive guy who can shoot the
ball with range, but also because he's long, he can
get to the basket and score. Also, now I'm not
saying he is Kevin Durant, Don't get me wrong. I
(13:06):
don't want to put that kind of pressure on a
young man, but he just kind of he's cool out there.
He just kind of reminds me of KD.
Speaker 1 (13:16):
That's fantastic. Well, I appreciate the preview on all this,
and Jack, I just want to remind people that Monday,
you and a lot of other former Wildcats will be
with the author of the book Memorial Coliseum seventy five
years as monument stage and arena. You and I have
seen some amazing things in that building over the years.
You played what two years in that building?
Speaker 2 (13:39):
Yeah? I played my first two years in Memorial Coliseum,
my last two years at Rupp Arena, and Terry, you
absolutely right. I know you were in school. We were
there at the same time, and boy, we would go
to some of those games, man, and it was it
was just unbelievable atmosphere and that built and you know
(14:00):
exactly what I'm talking about. It was just a great
basketball arena and.
Speaker 1 (14:10):
It was fantastic because you felt like you were on
top of people. I mean, we in the stands down there,
screaming for you guys. But you just felt like you
could really just rock the roof off of that place
just because of the configuration. And it was phenomenal.
Speaker 2 (14:25):
Yeah, that was going to be my next I was
just going to that man. It just seemed like the
crowd was sitting on the bench with us. Man. And
you know, I remember the very last game in that
You were probably going to ask me about that if
we had time. But the very last game in that building,
we played Mississippi State and I still don't know how
(14:49):
we do it, how we did it, but we were
down seven points I think it was with a minute
and twenty three second and left something like that, and
we didn't have a three point line, we didn't have
a shot clock. The Mississippi State players, Joe Dene junior,
(15:13):
they were they had run over to their radio announcers
and they were screaming, we've beaten them in the last
game in referreena. The game wasn't over yet. I mean
they were they were cheering, and we got them. We
got them, and the next thing I know, and I
(15:33):
don't know how we did it, but the next thing
I know, I'm making a shot as time runs out
to tie the game and send it to overtime, and
then we beat them in overtime. How we even got
to that point, I have no idea, but we did.
We beat them. We closed the building down on the
(15:55):
right note. At that time, it was going to be
the last game they had a in there, n it
game I think it was. But man, that's an amazing building.
I'm glad to be a part of that. Monday night.
Speaker 1 (16:07):
