Speaker 1 (00:00):
Coming soon after all the election dust settles, it is
Veterans Day. That is a week from yesterday. So next
Monday will be Veterans Day. But there's an event on Saturday.
Fred Moore would like to invite you to take part in.
He's the director of Flags four Vets. Hey, Fred, welcome
back to the radio.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Terry. Thanks a lot. We set this date. I didn't
really remember that it was election day, but you know,
we've got something gone for people that it doesn't matter
you know what your election preferences are. There's over seventy
five hundred women that have served in our armed forces
that are in those grades in Cave Hill and they

(00:41):
don't care what your party is. They're just hopeful that
you'll be there to place flags on their graves.

Speaker 1 (00:46):
That's the whole idea, is a Cave Hill cemetery. I
know you are going to have people gather on Saturday
at eleven am appropriately enough at Breckenridge Franklin Elementary School
on Pain Street and that's near Lexington Road, nearby to
Cave Hill. So what happens from there, well.

Speaker 2 (01:06):
At eleven o'clock exactly, because that is a notable time
for a Veterans' Day when the surrender was made by
the Japanese was at eleven So at eleven am we
walk across the street. We will go about one hundred
feet carrying each person having a flag for a grave.

(01:28):
We go into the cemetery. The Marine Corp League will
be there to do a rifle volley twenty one gun
salute and our taps player Rich Adams will blow taps
and everyone knows how meaningful the sound of that is.
Then we will immediately start putting flags on graves. And

(01:50):
this year we will make sure that anyone who wants
to can go from our event on downtown to the
Veterans Day parade. It's amy, it's perfect. You can stop
at Cave Hill some flags on days and head downtown indeed.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
For the big parade. And do you have to be
a certain age to be able to do this or
can you bring your boy scout troop or anything like?
Are young kids allowed to do this as well?

Speaker 2 (02:21):
Well? We've always advertised this as a kid's event, but
one of the reasons we start at the Breckinridge School
is that the bathrooms are made available for kids and adults.
But that's a real convenience for people who might have
to wait for a few minutes. And it's wheelchairs are welcome.

(02:45):
The ground that we play flags and is just perfect
for anyone who wants to walk or roll or cross.

Speaker 1 (02:53):
Oh that's fantastic. Okay, This Saturday morning, eleven o'clock at
Breckenridge Franklin Elementary School. Well that's thirteen to fifty one
pain Street near Lexington Road, and you're going to volunteers
are going to line up for the parade of flags
at the school and then you go into Cave Hill
and plant them with all the veterans there. And you
said that's over seven five hundred.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
Yes. And one of the remarkable things is that there
are two hundred or more grades of unknown soldiers in
this veteran sexual. I don't know another cemetery around that
has that many unknown soldiers. There's just a little plain
marker about the size of a gallon of Milton with

(03:38):
a number on it. And one from their family has
ever been able to stand at their graves And on
Saturday that could be your job to stand there for
that man or woman, that that veteran of the armedforces.

Speaker 1 (03:54):
That makes sense. How do you pay for all those flags.
Where's that money come from, Fred.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
Well, we do a lot of fundraising, we sell flag
pins with pins, but the majority of our funding has
been from Jumana was our founding sponsor. They started with
this about sixteen years ago and they have funded this
event every year since.

Speaker 1 (04:20):
It's fantastic. Your website is Flags for the Number four
Flags four Vets dot com. People can learn more and
help out the organization. It's fantastic, great work, Fred, Thank.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
You very much, and I know you're busy, so I
can't wait to hear you as if you just here.

Speaker 1 (04:41):
Okay, well, I appreciate you chiming in as always.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
All right, Thanks Jerry, best to you.

Speaker 1 (04:48):
Fred Moore, director of Flags for Vets, and they're inviting
volunteers to help place US flags on the graves of
over seven thousand, five hundred US veterans excuse me, buried
in the National Military section of Louisville's Cave Hill Cemetery.
