Speaker 1 (00:00):
I heard from one of my favorite people in broadcasting,
one of my all time fames. That's right, Kelsey Starts
and Owensborough native. And I think you know what I
need to do, Kelse is read your bio before you
come back on the air with me.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
I totally that's necessary.

Speaker 1 (00:17):
I totally forgot that you worked in New York City,
New York City as a producer on Court TV and MSNB. Yeah,
I forgot all that stuff, the.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
Old Court TV with Nancy Grace and such.

Speaker 1 (00:31):
Naty Grace yelling all the time.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
It's quite an experience.

Speaker 1 (00:38):
Is she loud like off TV too?

Speaker 2 (00:41):
Yes, she is exactly as you think she would be.

Speaker 1 (00:46):
She needs to be in pro wrestling too, she'd be
a great hype person in pro wrestling.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
Something I think. Yeah, I think you're right. Absolutely.

Speaker 1 (00:55):
Man. Gimpty, gampty, gampty. There you go anyway, enough impersonating
Nancy Grace is always good to talk to you. How's
the family.

Speaker 3 (01:02):
Yes, I'm so glad to talk to you too, and
this catching up and family's great. Everybody's in full summer
mode now that the uh, the weather's nicer, so they're
living their best lives.

Speaker 1 (01:15):
You know, all your kids, I know, they're great students.
They you know, your husband is great with the kids, uh,
you know, making sure that they're studying and doing all
the things they need to do. He's not a hands
off dad like me, who's just like, just give me
your best. I'm watching TV.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
Yeah, he's he's on all the sports.

Speaker 3 (01:36):
He's coaching the girls softball team and my son's flag
football team too. So oh yeah, they're they're in all
the sports and doing all the things.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
So he's playing flag football. I held him when he
was a new born. That was.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
Yeah, he's he's nine now.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
So you work for Katie. See, obviously you do the
show Inside Louisville. You do many other things. You're a
reporter and a producer. You're a person who loves history.
And so the topic of cursive writing came up, and
you let me know that you know a little bit
about that and at least you're exploring it.

Speaker 3 (02:17):
Well, you know, you know, one of my favorite things
to do is listen to Terry Miners.

Speaker 2 (02:21):
On the radio, so I'm always listening in the car.

Speaker 3 (02:25):
And but yeah, so I texted and I said, it
actually is cursive is coming back. It is mandated with
this this new bills and at Bilt on sixty seven past,
which means cursive will be now mandated beginning next school year.

Speaker 2 (02:43):
And that leaves a lot of.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
Educators, some of them never learned cursive, right, right, so
some of the teachers are going to be learning as well.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
So and what k ET does so well is education.

Speaker 3 (03:02):
Obviously, and it is you know, used by more than
two million people in every Kentucky school district. And so
we have developed a new series called Cursive Connection, and
it's going to be twenty six short video clips that
teach each letter in cursive. And it is a new

(03:25):
American cursive style. So it is a little bit different
from probably you and I first learned cursive, and it's
this new cursive style. It pretty much looks the same,
but it's a little simpler so kids can start learning
a little younger.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
Actually, and it was developed by a Louavillion. How about that.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
Iris Hatfield developed the new American cursive style, And that's
the style that our videos are.

Speaker 2 (03:52):
Going to be in.

Speaker 3 (03:53):
Those will be on PBS Learning Media and on YouTube,
and they're just short video clips that in you know,
help kids learn how to write incursive.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
And then.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
We're also developing some professional development courses for teachers as
they are also learning how to teach cursive, and they're
going to have practice sheets, additional classroom activities and all
of that that that teachers are going to need to
as they're trying to learn the benefits of writing incursive

(04:29):
and additional instruction for left hand writers. You know, they're
out there and they learn differently how to write cursive
and so so a lot of a lot of different
resources coming out from k E. T.

Speaker 2 (04:42):
So I thought I should let you know about it.

Speaker 1 (04:45):
I really appreciate that. I wonder which letters are change,
So let me guess Q lower case Q.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
Yeah, Q and F is very different to the way
it's not. It's not really as flowery.

Speaker 3 (04:58):
It's it's a more simple uh designs. So but yeah,
So those will be coming out the first They're going
to be released in a couple different segments. The first
letter so will come out over this next month, and
then we hope to have all of those out by
the time.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
The school year starts of course next year.

Speaker 3 (05:15):
So for all you teachers out there, that's an excellent
resource in addition to all of k ET's other wonderful
resources on PBS Learning media.

Speaker 1 (05:25):
Yeah, most of the cursive letters connect, right, I mean
I think A might be separated. I'm trying to remember,
like we're talking about the letter Q oftentimes follow up
by the letter you, and you make that little connective bridge, right,
so for the world, that's actually Q meaning to line
up Q U, E, U E. You can connect all
those but it's kind of weird the connectivity, the little

(05:46):
bridges you make between.

Speaker 3 (05:48):
Letters, and it's weird how you kind of develop your
own style, right, So I write normally in kind of
a hybrid, like some are print and some are curve
and so and sometimes my kids are like, what what.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
Does it say? I don't know, you know, they can't
even read it.

Speaker 3 (06:07):
So so a very a good standard, is I think
good for everybody.

Speaker 1 (06:11):
That's interesting. I'm looking forward to seeing this. Is this
stuff available online now, are going to be released in
the cost will.

Speaker 3 (06:18):
Be released over the next month. Well, we're hoped to
have the first couple out over the next month and
all of them will be out by the time school starts.
So so yeah, look for those. It's called cursive Connection,
and it'll be on previous learning media. It'll be on
k ET's website and then also on YouTube and YouTube
short videos which can be used in the classrooms or

(06:42):
kids at home over the summer can start learning themselves.

Speaker 2 (06:46):
So I was saying, jump up.

Speaker 1 (06:48):
I was saying earlier. When you write someone a personal
note about whatever, you know, you're just sending somebody a
note to congratulate them on this or that or whatever.
And you want to use cursive, you have to lock
your brain into it to remember some of those letters
because of the oddity of the creation, the curves and
so forth.

Speaker 3 (07:06):
Yeah, some of them aren't, like, you know, just normal
like how you would think that they would be. Most
of them are, and then you'll run into like you said,
like the queue and uh yeah, so you know, and
that is what it is.

Speaker 1 (07:21):
My left hand drags over what I've already written and
smudges it, and then I'm like, great, right, Yeah, somebody
needs to invent a little thing like with little wheels
on it that goes under your hand, that rides over
what you've written and doesn't there you go get the
work on that and Kelsey Inside Louisville, are we still
keeping that up a certain time.

Speaker 2 (07:41):
Of the year, Yes, we are so excited.

Speaker 3 (07:45):
Inside Louisville we're wrapping our season two and we just
had a really great program last Sunday on the Belvedere
and we talked to Layla George, who is in charge
to this new redesign of the Belvidere, and so we
got to really dive deep into the history of the
Belvidere and how.

Speaker 2 (08:06):
These dramatic new plans for it.

Speaker 3 (08:10):
They're really exciting, and so we talked about that. And
then coming up next Sunday, the Kentucky Book Festival is
coming to Louisville, and so we talked to Bill Goodman
at Old kay T Brow about that as well, so
in Kentucky Humanities. So we're excited about that. So those

(08:33):
are a couple of ours still to come this season,
and then we're already making plans for next season.

Speaker 1 (08:38):
Excellent. Bill's gonna stop by here and visit me when
the book Perfect Book event is coming up here on
the Louisville and Layla George, of course, my wife is
Mary George. Of course their cousins. You know how that
was I was about to ask.

Speaker 2 (08:51):
I figured there's some connection all those George's right, That's.

Speaker 1 (08:55):
Right, both of their fathers or their fathers are brothers.
So there you go.

Speaker 2 (09:00):
What's It's kind of like the miners.

Speaker 1 (09:02):
Welcome to Kentucky. Kelsey starts. Always great, talking to you, Pardner.

Speaker 3 (09:06):
I gotta tell you, Terry, Shay says, to tell you Hi.

Speaker 2 (09:09):
I have to make sure to get that in.

Speaker 3 (09:11):
Ah.

Speaker 2 (09:12):
That's so sweet, Shay Hopkins.

Speaker 1 (09:14):
I love her. I know her from my UK days.

Speaker 2 (09:19):
Yeah, she said, y'all go way back.

Speaker 1 (09:21):
Awesome person. All right, great talking to you, Kelsey.

Speaker 2 (09:24):
All right, thanks Terry. So soon.

Speaker 1 (09:25):
That's Kelsey starts on k e T. The show's inside Louisville.
It's every week for most of the year. As you said,
she's got a couple more episodes coming up here and
then this special on cursive you can find on k
ET's website because apparently we're all learning it once again.
