Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, there's been a lot of movement among college football coaches.
It happens every year. This time Kentucky's story, of course,
is that they snare the offensive coordinator from Oregon. His
name's Will Stein. Were all familiar with him. A very
high profile selection came from the old Miss nests. Oh
(00:22):
old Miss football is doing well. Lane Kiffin is who
we find at the top of the pile. But then
there's the LSU job open because Brian Kelly is no
longer there. I thought we'd call in the LSU uber fan,
Brian Manzella and get an update on fans sentiment with
the new coach, Lane Kiffin now settling in at Baton Rouge. Brian,
(00:45):
welcome back.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
Always good to be on, Terry.
Speaker 1 (00:50):
I know you love college football. Breaking it all down
this whole deal of a Lane Kiffin. They reported that
they thought a Mississippi fan tried to run Kiffen's car
off the road on the way to the airport. Is
that nonsense or did that really happen.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
Here's the best part. It doesn't matter whether he made
it up or not. He's our coach Noway that's the
way Tiger fans think. We don't care what he did
to the players, We don't care. We're just tired of
being bored to death in the third quarter when it's
third and eight and you run a dive play, you know,
(01:28):
and you waste Pro Bowl wide receivers. It's a pain
in the you know what. And we've been wonning some
offense since Joe Brady left for the NFL. Right, so
he was the mastermind behind that twenty nineteen team that
scored all those points and won the national championship, and
of course Joe Burrow won the Heisman. But since then,
(01:50):
the only offense we've had is you know, Jaden Daniels.
The one thing about a running quarterback, right, no matter
how dumb the coach is, he could just go back
to pass and run for fifty yards on that play.
So we're really looking forward to having a guy who
can scheme people open and when the national media sticks
(02:11):
a you know, a little knife in on neck or
whatever they like to do, a coach that can stand
there at the in the press conference and give it
back to them so that you know, they they let
us win our little national championships with Les Miles chewing
grass and the zeron sounding like you've got a frog
in his throat. They can make fun of us. We're
(02:32):
those people down there. Well, now they got to deal
with Lane in the press conferences, and he's as good
in the press conference as he is on the sideline.
So we're cautiously optimistic. But the optimistic part is on
a ten.
Speaker 1 (02:45):
I think he showed at ole Miss that he can
get a program whipped into shape pretty quickly.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
Well, you know, the thing about it is if you're
you know, when you're designing offense, and this is why,
you know, like when people say, well what happens if
we don't get And I was kind of, you know,
hoping Jeff Brown would be on the list. When you
have an offensive coordinator as your head coach, and he's
a brilliant offensive coordinator, even when your team isn't that great,
(03:14):
you can still outsmart the other person, especially on those
scripted plays at the beginning of the game. And we
haven't had that in you know, too many years. And
we're very excited about the entertainment part of it too,
Like people don't really they think everybody's oh, we just
(03:34):
either win this game or that game, or this national
championship or this getting the playoffs but you pay a
lot of money to go to a college football game,
and it's an hour away for us here in New Orleans.
And I've been pretty much bored for a long time,
and I don't think I'm gonna be bored. We're gonna
have somebody that you know. In our not our fight song,
(03:55):
but our nickname fight song, Hey, fighting Tigers, one of
the lines is run up the score. We're looking for that,
right man.
Speaker 1 (04:04):
How's it layout for next year? For the whole schedule?
I mean, does it look like it's it's something that
that lane kiff is not going to be overrun? Doesn't
it open with uh?
Speaker 2 (04:14):
Or No?
Speaker 1 (04:15):
We don't have them all scheduled in yet, so we're
not sure exactly what the dates are, but we just
know the opponents.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
Yeah, I think so. It's not an easy it's not
a super easy schedule. We do have Alabama here. You know, oh,
this might be the you know there's a there's a double. No,
it's the old Miss so Ole Miss was at at
all Miss And you would think, well, that means this
year it's going to be in Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge,
But it's no, it's the double because of the news schedule.
(04:41):
In the realignment of the SEC, we go back to Oxford,
to that little crappy sixty eight thousand seats stadium, and
I don't know if it's worth going to that game
without a bodyguard, but it's it's on the it's on
the table. I will tell you this. Those bleed seats
for the first have, like Quinn tuppled in the last
(05:02):
couple of days, I am certain for the first first
Tiger Stadium game. Of course, I took you down there
and you ran down the hill with the band. I
didn't know what it's all about.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
I loved it. I thought the pregame ceremony was unbelievable
and I appreciate you shepherding me through that. I'd never
seen a ceremony like that prior to a game. And
speaking of Kentucky, that was their opponent that day. The
LSU is coming to Lexington this.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
Year, Well, I think we're gonna do that game. We
love Kentucky, me and Lisa, and we also love Lexington.
We enjoyed it the last time we were there, and
Keenland in the whole nine yards. But it really works out.
The team really works out about like this, so We've
got four losses this year with a quarterback who was
(05:47):
more or less crippled. Right, he had a torn peck,
you know, a torn oblique muscle and couldn't throw at
fifteen to twenty yards from when he's not injured. Now,
we got a midget that Mississippi State offed up to
us for half a million dollars. That was a disaster.
So we've got four losses. Had we had this same team,
(06:07):
which I hope we have a better roster and Lane
and Trinidad playing quarterback, we beat two losses in you know,
one good game or somebody the right team losing from
being in the playoffs with this what Everythingboddy thinks it's
a bad team. It's it's it's a quarterback driven world
in the NFL, but in college football, a running quarterback
(06:32):
driven world.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
Good points, Yeah, absolutely, and and and that does diversify
the options for a team when the quarterback is always
a danger of just taking off you know, boom.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
Well it just showed. It just shows you as there's
all these teams. You know, Indiana gets this kid, you know,
he wasn't there last year, and uh, I can't think
of his name. Fernando I can't really think of his name,
but you know, the Hosband candidate. You can go pick
quarterbacks off the you know, basically the portal.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
Yeah, you go shopping.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
Hey you got and guess what raising Kins boy, Todd Graves,
he's worth about I don't know, twenty billion. They gave
Less I mean the Less Miles boys at a fudiance script.
They gave Lane same first initial and nothing else is
the same. They told him it's like twenty five million
a year now for his whole contract for the nil money.
(07:28):
So I think you can probably recruit a good quarterback
and a couple of good running backs and the Tigers
will be a factor next year.
Speaker 1 (07:37):
Yeah, no doubt about it. And lots of teams that
we may not even see bubble up could be factors
just because of what we're talking about. The player's ability
to pop out of the pez dispenser and be somewhere else.
And then it's a good combination. It's about the combination
of the various personalities and their talent levels and.
Speaker 2 (07:56):
The fit with the program right. And everybody knows, you know,
they follow all this stuff just like you and I do,
and they if you're a quarterback out there. Not only
you're gonna get to play for Kiffery, you probably get
to throw it a bunch and have a good offense
to run that. A lot of people have been successful,
and they look at Jackson Dart, But you're gonna be
(08:17):
able to do it in one hundred and two thousand
screaming Cajuns at seven o'clock, you know, six forty five
kickoff on ESPN, and the whole world's gonna watch you
play quarterback. You know you can't get that if you
go to you know, I don't know Northwestern or you know, Vanderbilt.
You know, God bless him. I know they got the
number one quarterback this year. Good for them. But I
(08:38):
think he's gonna have no trouble finding his weapons and
I will be there finally, maybe not having to tell
a coach win the call time out from the stand.
Speaker 1 (08:51):
Okay, quickly on current events. You already mentioned Vandy. Do
they slide into the doldrums once Diego Pove is gone?
Speaker 2 (08:59):
No? I think this this kid they picked up as good.
Obviously he's a good coach, right and uh, I think
the kid's gonna win the Heisman. He was a pain
in the rear end.
Speaker 1 (09:08):
You do you think he'll get it over The Indiana
quarterback Fernando Mendoza is an Indian. Yes, Indiana.
Speaker 2 (09:14):
I listened. I listened to you know, the mad Dog
Russo's and all that stuff that they they're voters and
and he he thinks that's the that's the that's the player.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
That story is that good.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
Yeah. And and the fact that he's he's a pain
in the rear end. Like I said, to cheer for
your team, he's playing for the other team. And you know,
he probably has no value in the NFL. Who knows
because he's you know, such a little short guy. But
the guy is a gamer, and he took a program,
you know, him and the coach all by themselves. I
(09:45):
mean they were just you know, a couple of breaks
here and there. They could be in the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (09:48):
And then his mom will run on stage and twerk.
I mean, they show his mom more than they show
the ball game.
Speaker 2 (09:54):
Probably well they they it depends on what the mom
looks like. You know, it's gonna be the most you know,
it's gonna be on cam a lot this year. Is
Lane's daughter dates the best player on the LSU team.
Late weeks if that ain't gonna be on TV every
five minutes. Then I don't know nothing about those networks,
and I think I know a little.
Speaker 1 (10:14):
All right, Brian, we'll leave it there. It's great talking
to you again. We'll talk golf, wing it, get warms
up a little bit.
Speaker 2 (10:20):
Sounds good.
Speaker 1 (10:21):
Be good to see you, brother. That's Brian Manzila, live
from New Orleans and of course an uber LSU fan.
He's always up on everything, living and breathing LSU Gold
Tigers and it's spelled g e a u x gor
Tigers Back in a minute.
