(00:05):
Welcome to knob City. Here onnews radio A forty whas, I'm Terry
Miners, there's Ian Berttree's. AndOh, I won't be here tomorrow.
I'm in a golf tournament tomorrow.Oh, you got one whole day in
before you had to take off work. I need another day to play golf.
I was terrible yesterday, horrible.I need to remedy the situation.
(00:29):
Playing with three other guys, includingone of them whom is Paul Rodgers,
the voice of the Louisville Cardinals.Where it's carrying that forsome yep, golf
stories are big this time of year. There's a young man who understands an
intern at the Pete Dike Course atFrench Lick, and he did something kind
of magical yesterday. Nick Cacaro, welcome, It's good to have you on.
(00:53):
Hey guys, so Aria, it'sgood to have you on. Brother.
Am I right? You're an internat the Pete Die Course at French
Lick. That is correct. We'renot a bad place to hang out every
day. Dude. That is themost stunning vista. That place is beautiful.
Yeah, it's it's fantastic up here. The views do not get old.
If you're wondering, yeah, Imean there's so many beautiful views from
(01:17):
that elevation that you just see,you can see forever. And then,
of course the golf is magnificent too. So are you like a college student
or what are you doing? What'syour plan? What's your golf future?
Correct? I am a college studentgolf management major at Trine University up in
Angola, Indiana. I was justby there this weekend, all right,
(01:38):
hanging out at Lake George. Yep, yep, the city of a thousand
or one hundred lake. Sorry, that's right. Yeah, to get my
PGA card so I can be ahead professional. That would be awesome.
What kind of a game do youhave? I mean do people Am I
allowed to ask you what your handyis? Or is that private end for
(02:00):
nation? No? Well, youknow, I don't play in I play
at school at Trine, UM,so I don't play anything that needs a
handicap, So I don't keep track. But I'm probably around a scratch golfer.
Well that's a pretty good game yougot going in, not too bad.
And then and then so you're twentysomething. You're a kid, right,
I mean, you're a youngster youngman. Yeah, I'm twenty,
(02:20):
so you can hit the ball.I'm gonna go three forty on your driver.
I wish no, no, aboutthree ten? Oh only three ten?
Excuse me? So at the piecourse, there are some shots that
require some length, and then someof them are optical illusions. You know
where it looks like it's forever, but it's not really. It's just the
(02:42):
you know, the way those hillsroll, I mean that really is plays
to your eye. You have tohave a unique, I don't know,
a set of skills to really getaround and master that course. Right,
Yeah, I mean I've played aboutseven hundred fifty holes here so far this
summer, so that does come inhandy on days like yesterday. So tell
(03:04):
us how you did this. Itwas America's two hundred and forty seventh birthday
and you decided to do what Well, originally just started out as something for
myself, checking something off my golfbucket list. I wanted to play one
hundred holes in the day, soI picked a date July fourth. We
were supposed to be pretty slow, and then someone gave me the terrible idea
to try and play two hundred andforty seven holes for America's birthday. It
(03:30):
was just kind of a joke atfirst and didn't seem possible until the idea
kind of got around here, andthen French like marketing got a hold of
it, and then the story justkind of took off from there and we
really made something of it. Raiseda lot of Folds of Honor. For
Folds of Honor, I'm sorry youcut out there for a second. Yes,
Folds of Honor that that organization isjust magnificent what they do for military
(03:52):
families, So I'm so glad thatyou're helping them. I got the pleasure
to Caddy for an end up playingwith and Rooney, the CEO of Folds
of Honors, So that's how Iinitially really caught wind of the great things
that he does. Yeah, hisstory is amazing and what he's done with
Folds of Honor. I hope peopleunderstand how important that organization is. So
(04:14):
I'm glad you did that. Sowhat did you do? Get friends to
donate a dollar for every hole youplayed or something like that. The dollar
was on the high end. Imean, as you guys know, that
adds up pretty quick. When youplayed two hundred and forty seven holes.
But yeah, I just I putsome stuff out on all my social media's
and had anywhere from ten cents upto a dollar per hole. And I've
(04:35):
raised a good bit of money andas there's still more money coming in,
especially from the French lick side, that's fantastic. So you didn't physically go
through two hundred forty seven holes?Did you play multiple balls on each hole
and then and then count them asas a separate hole? Oh? No,
I played. I physically played twohundred and forty seven holes. I
(04:56):
played through the entire golf course thirteenlittle more thirteen and a half times.
How is that possible in one day? Well, I wasn't sure it was
either. You know, I waswent off about six am, and I
was giving myself till midnight, andso eighteen hours. For eighteen hours,
I would have had to average likefour and a half minutes a hole.
(05:18):
So I wanted to start out hotso I can give myself some leeway when
I inevitably slowed down. But Ijust didn't really slow down, Like my
first ten rounds were all at aboutan hour pace. Oh my goodness,
did someone drive the cart for you? It was just me out there oh
this is nuts, So you hadto do that? Did you repair your
(05:39):
divots? Yep? I would sandthem, sand them as fast as I
could take the sand with you hitthe shot. You don't have time to
think because you're just gonna go up, you know, approximate y already,
just so you'll just say that lookslike an eight iron and then you need
to go swing. And if youtook a divot and then you stand it
and then jump back into cart.Yeah. So did you even have time
(06:00):
to watch the ball in flight andsee where it landed for to see it
like how it rolled on the greenfor your next putt? Oh? No,
no, it was as soon asI got if I knew it was
good or you know, down thefairway or on the green, I'd just
run straight to my cart and startgoing. The only time i'd watch it
as if it was like flirting withthe heather, maybe going into dangers,
then i'd watch it. But otherthan that, I just hit it ran.
(06:24):
And you didn't have anybody to spotthe ball for you, so they
can just you get there and theypoint there you go, and then they
would get on a cart and jumpahead of you. Nope, it was
just me. It was. Itwas a long day, but it was
a good day. How did younourish yourself through all this time? Well,
in the morning, I had acouple of nature valleys, and after
my sixth round around, like elevenam or so eleven thirty, I stopped
(06:48):
for about ten minutes at a sandwichand then I didn't need for the rest
of the day. That's incredible.Or are you one of those little skinny
guys who hits a three hundred tenyards and you weigh one hundred and forty
eight. Yeah, that's about spoton. I'm about one forty five.
Yeah, I knew it. Onlya guy your size could get by on
(07:10):
two nature valley bars in a sandwich, I want to eat that for breakfast.
Usually I eat a lot of food. But when I did stop for
that ten minutes, I know Idid tighten up a little, and it
took me a couple holes to getloose again, and so I just didn't
really want to stop. The onlything I had for the rest of the
day was just another Snickers, andI mean it got me through. Well,
(07:32):
you didn't just drink water, didn'tyou have to have some sort of
electrolytes? Yeah, I bought sixbig gut, six big bottles of gatorade
the day before that I had withme as well, so I went through
probably a case of water and allthose gatorades. That is awesome. So
anyway, were there any birdies? Was there a freakish eagle? Anything like
(07:54):
that? Happened to you? Acouple hole in one scares? I had
probably three part three is I toput within a foot? One of them
was about an inch. Had twentynine birdies and one eagle. That is
unbelievable. That's a eagle. Wassorry, No, I was just gonna
(08:16):
say, you are a scratch golferto be able to do that without even
because most people have to sit thereand just feel the moment before each shot,
and it's like, what do Ineed and move my wrist this way?
I want to try this. Igotta take this. I gotta push
it out to the left. Igotta need a draw, I need to
cut it, you know whatever. You don't have time to think of any
of that stuff. You're running upto it and then swinging and then jumping
(08:39):
back in a cart. Right.Yeah, I noticed the first round I
was going a little too fast, and I just had to kind of compose
myself just a little before each golfshot, just to help me hit a
better shot so I could play faster. So yeah, it was it was
just keep running and going. Ohtell me, there was a GoPro on
the car so they could at leastsee you swing the club a few times.
(09:03):
I did have a time lapse cameraon the cart that followed me the
entire day, So there is I'mnot sure exactly where that video is being
posted, but it will be probablyon French Lick Resort eventually. I'm on
their website. Right now I don'tsee it, but yeah, I hopefully
get it on there. I'm onthe Pete Die course website. Yeah,
(09:24):
I'm not sure exactly when it'll beup, but it will be up.
But like, for instance, let'sjust say eighteen. Anybody who plays Golfrienner
has played Pete Die. Hopefully they'vegot a chance to play eighteen. Let's
say you hit that second shot tothe left and it goes down that enormous
hill. Well, it takes alot of time to get down there and
just right the ship. Did thatever happen? Well, there was strategy
(09:46):
that went into this. Most ofthe time on the par fives. I
was laying up for that reason becauseI didn't want to waste time going down
there, right, But eighteen Iwent for more than like three is a
similar setup, you know, hugevalley, right eighteen It'd go for probably
more times than I should have, but it worked out. I made six
birdies on the eighteen yesterday, soridiculous. Yeah, and Nick, this
(10:11):
is a heck of a story. This is fantastic. I love that you
did this for America and then youdid it for Folds of Honor and you
got through this. And what wasthe exact time you started? You think
you took your first drive at sixam, just a hair before six am,
like five fifty five ish, andI my last stroke, my last
pud was at eight o five pm, so just a little over fourteen hours.
(10:35):
What's the last hole because that doesn'teven out for two hundred and forty
seven, like fourteen close. Yeah, I finished up on the part three
thirteen one, Okay, Yeah,I was wondering how you did that at
eight o'clock. He had plenty oftime to go get a candy bar and
get ready for the fireworks in anhour exactly. This is a great story
(10:58):
where can pep will follow you onsocial so they can find this video or
see more detail about this um Instagramhandle at nick dot CaCO last named c
O C C A r O.Same thing with Twitter as well. Um,
the time lass the time laps videowill probably be posted on Twitter at
some point from my page. UM, okay, hopefully that time. Hopefully
(11:22):
that time laps video gets my wholeout. On the fourteenth in my third
round for eagle, yeah exactly. That's that's the important thing, all right,
So go ahead, And that wasthe shot of the day for sure.
It's only my third round and thefour I had sixty yards in.
It was kind of a tucked pinand so I had hit like the perfect
(11:45):
little nipper up there, and Ididn't see it going because I couldn't see
the whole. But one of thegrounds crew guys was sitting there off to
the side and he saw it going. He just put his arms up and
that there was a commercial that wayyears ago for something or other where the
kid hits a shot and the groundskeeperguys up there far away and the kid
looks around for somebody to cheer theguy's up, and he said, I
(12:07):
saw it kid. So that's themoment you Yeah, all right, Nick,
spell your Instagram address again for usone more time, Nick, nic
K dot c O C C Ar O. Okay, we'll find you
on instant. All right, heyman, that's impressive way to go.
(12:28):
And thanks for checking out the Foolsof Honor and following up on that.
That's fantastic. Yeah, of courseI appreciate you guys having me on all
right, mister Nick. Proud ofyou, and I hope to get up
there and play the course again sometimethis fall and get to meet you before
you get away back to school.Yeah, hopefully I see it, okay,
brother, Thanks NICKO. There heis live from the Pete Dye Course
(12:50):
at French Lick, which is atreat. There's no two ways about it.
It's expensive, but it is ifyou love golf, it's like,
wow, that is just a stunningcourse in this metro areas. It's in
French Liake, Indiana, but inthis general vicinity in this region. Play
that course one time and just likeyou'll make sure the weather is good.
(13:13):
You know, if the weather getssideways and you're on your way there,
postpone until a day when it's nicebecause you have to be able to see
the views without clouds of securing thedistant shots you just get. I mean,
it's just incredible. And then andthen you have you can get a
caddy to go along with you.And then there will be some shots where
you'll you'll look and think it's onehundred and ninety yards to get around that
(13:35):
ridge or whatever, and a guywill go, no, it's one forty
and you're like what, and it'sjust there's it's just a bit of an
optical illusion in certain angles because it'sbuilt up in these hills around a French
Lake, Indiana, and there's justnothing like it. It's a beautiful,
beautiful course. So congratulations again toNick and we'll post his interview online so
(13:58):
you can find him on Instagram whenhe spells out his name and there he
goes Nick Cocorro's his name. Anintern at French Licks Pete Dye course back
