Speaker 1 (00:00):
I saw a little Racing Louisville news today. They've named
Caitlin Flores Milby as the new GM, the general manager.
So I want to meet one of her players right now.
See what she'll talk about her on the radio. Jordan Bloomer,
Welcome to the show.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
Thank you so much for having me.
Speaker 1 (00:15):
It's good to see you and and you are a
wisconsinit which makes me very happy.
Speaker 3 (00:21):
I am, yep, Wisconsin born and raised in University of
Wisconsin alum.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
Awesome. You know what I'm going to talk about in
a few minutes. It's an NFL team that seems to
reside up there. How's your life with Racing Louisville.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
Well, it definitely got a little bit crazier over these
past couple of weeks, stepping into a bit of a
bit of a new role for me.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
But it's been awesome.
Speaker 1 (00:40):
But good for you, Yeah, I mean, so you go
in as goalkeeper and you and all of a sudden,
it's like your cat light reflexes are going to work,
right hey, I.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
Mean we do it in training every day, so I'm
just glad it translated to the big stage.
Speaker 1 (00:54):
Team's doing well too. I know you're three three and
two right now. But it's been good here of late.
Speaker 3 (00:58):
Mm hm, Yeah, we've definitely kind of had a little
bit of a shaky start, but I feel like the
team's really kind of coming into our identity and we've
really turned a corner in these past few matches, and
I think like, yeah, we look really strong right now,
and I think we're playing a very exciting, exciting game
of football.
Speaker 1 (01:12):
You got a match coming up on Friday night, Seattle.
That who's here?
Speaker 2 (01:15):
That is correct, Friday night.
Speaker 1 (01:17):
We're very excited about this. Love your stadium. What about
your new GM You already know her anyway.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
Right, Oh, yeah, Caitlyn.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
I mean we're stoked for absolutely thrilled her for her,
And it's such a great opportunity also to have somebody
that's been around the players in the club already, you know,
like we don't have to go through kind of like
that introduction phase with somebody new, some outsiders. So I think,
you know, I think Kaitlyn will be a great fit
for us, and you know, we're all really happy for.
Speaker 1 (01:41):
It because she signed your paycheck now, as they say,
the boss.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
Signing my paycheck.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
Yeah, so since she definitely probably signs my paycheck Kaitlyn,
I just want to reiterate how happy we are for you.
Speaker 1 (01:57):
No, that's all good. Well, we're happy for I know
she started as then turn there about eight years ago.
So tell me about playing the goalkeeper position, because that,
to me is the most nerve wracking the other You know,
if you're a midfielder, you're this, that, whatever on You've
got responsibilities. But dude, it's all on you.
Speaker 2 (02:17):
It is.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
But you know, I think everyone kind of jokes that
goalkeepers have to be a little bit crazy to want
to play in this position, and you know, I usually
try to. I usually try to like fight that a
little bit and be like, I'm not that crazy, and
then I look at what we do sometimes and I'm like, okay,
maybe I see it.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
Like at the end of the day, though I love
the pressure.
Speaker 3 (02:34):
I would much rather be the one that either is
in control of making the save or getting scored on.
And this is where I kind of understand why people
think I'm crazy. I just so much rather be the
one to blame than to have to like watch and
think that, you know, maybe I could have done something different.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
You can make a save with just the tip of
your finger too. That's the amazing thing. Or obviously it's
a full you take a full body hit, or it
could be just a deflection just.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
Enough, it's just enough. Yeah, it's a game of inches.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
Sure when it comes down to the ball being struck
at the pace it is, you don't always need much
on it to get it to push around the post
or up and over the crossbar. But yeah, it's definitely. Uh,
it's a fun one though, I can't lie.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
It's actually when you.
Speaker 1 (03:13):
When you extend your body horizontally, you're like one of
those high jumped people in the Olympics too, So it's
everything you gotta launch and it's all about guessing too.
That's the whole thing, is anticipating.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
M Yeah, I mean it's it's it's definitely uh.
Speaker 3 (03:28):
I like to joke with people that my entire job
now is you know, jumping up sideways with no intention
to land on my feet.
Speaker 2 (03:35):
So like I just like to throw my body through
the air. And I mean we do.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
We do a ton of work though at training to
try to you know, really key key in our reflexes
to be as best as we possibly can, and you know,
try to study players as much as possible to get
any little extra help on like you know what kind
of shots certain players like to take what little body
position might give an given little extra hint ato where
(04:01):
they're trying to strike it.
Speaker 1 (04:02):
But they do it in other sports too. I mean,
think of a boxer. Yep, they know someone's tendencies. If
he leans that shoulder this way, it probably means this
is happening basketball, clearly they try to make people go
to a side they're less comfortable with. It's the same
thing for you. But when you're facing somebody in a
PK situation, that's the whole thing. It's just like what
do do you stare them in the eyes? What do
(04:24):
you do do you Is there any intimidation you try
to throw back?
Speaker 2 (04:27):
It depends.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
I definitely like to go a little bit more on
the edge of you know, not full on like taunting
by any means.
Speaker 2 (04:35):
I'm not that bold yet, but I definitely try to.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
I try to exude a little bit of confidence, you know,
let them know like I'm not scared of you. Like
I love a PK situation because I think at the
end of the day, all the pressure is really on them.
It feels like it's on me from like the outside perspective,
but the shooter should score, right, so I know that.
I know they know that. So if I look really
(05:01):
confident and try to like give them but sometimes I'll
give them a little smile, you know, just like really
see if it messes with their head. And then once
they once they get ready to strike it, I I
do my best to try to get that ball out
of there.
Speaker 1 (05:12):
You do have a bold and confident smile about you too,
so you're throwing that to them, well, thank you. Yeah, absolutely,
that's just funny though. That would be so nerve wracking
those to be the goalkeeper in a PK situation, just
because particularly when there's going to be a bunch of
them and you're just you're swatting them away like flies.
It's like that feels good.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
It's really what I live for at the end of
the day.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
I mean, we I don't think you get this far
in the position if you don't kind of love it.
But it's kind of like I feel like any any
high pressure moment, you know, people who want to be
the one on a basketball court taking the shot for
the buzzer beater win. Like I'm that type of person
where like I want that moment I want to be
able to be the one that has the influence and
(05:53):
make or break a game. So I kind of love it.
Speaker 1 (05:56):
We're talking to Jordan bloom Or. She's a goalkeeper for
Racing Louisville. Their next matches Friday night, seven thirty versus Seattle.
You guys are on a nice role. How did this
start for you? Was it? Was it another sport when
you were a young kid, and then you've segued into soccer.
What happened?
Speaker 3 (06:12):
So? I think I did the classic, Like my parents
put me in you know, local rec league soccer as
soon as I could kind of run around. And I'd
always been like a multi sport athlete growing up. My
like second primary sport, I would say, it was always basketball,
so hand eye coordination got introduced pretty quick. But I
also loved playing like I played football with the boys
(06:33):
at Recess growing up, and yeah, I just ended up
really falling in love with soccer though, Like I played
basketball for as long as I could, so I played
up until high school, and then after my freshman year
of high school, I was already getting recruited for soccer collegiately,
and I was like, I can't do both, so I
ended up uh, finally like fully specializing in soccer at
(06:55):
probably what was that like fifteen then? Mm hm, But yeah,
it just came down to no one else really wanted
to be in the goal, and I didn't want to lose,
so I said, all right, put me back there, because
I don't want to watch somebody else give up goals
if I think I can save them.
Speaker 1 (07:08):
How nerve wracking is draft time when you're waiting to
find out what's happening. You're at the University of Wisconsin
then and then suddenly what happens?
Speaker 3 (07:16):
Yeah, I Uh, My draft weekend was wild because it
was actually also the same weekend of graduation, so it
was the end of my college finals had just finished up.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
Draft was Saturday, graduation.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
Was Friday, so the draft really was going to make
or break my graduation weekend. And I ended up having
a bunch of people over because it was still coming
off the tail end of COVID where they decided to
do a fully virtual draft. So I had a bunch
of my friends and family over to my college apartment,
and yeah, we just turned it on and on the
(07:51):
TV and sat and waited for a phone call or
to hear my name over the loud speaker, So.
Speaker 1 (07:57):
What what happened first? The phone call or to hear
it all?
Speaker 3 (08:00):
So I was expecting a phone call and never actually
got one. So after a couple I had had some
really good conversations with Louisville and a few other teams
leading into the draft. So there were kind of you know,
certain certain teams that you when you know they're up
to pick, you're kind of like sitting there with your
phone in your hand and you're like, okay, like maybe
this could be me, Maybe.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
This could be me.
Speaker 3 (08:20):
Like and Louisville was up to pick, and all of
a sudden, like the little chime thing whatever, like oh.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
The pick is in.
Speaker 3 (08:27):
And I was like, oh, man, like that it's not me.
I didn't get a phone call, and so I kind
of stopped paying attention. And it was my mom that
was like, wait, just in case, just in case, and
I was like, Mom, they're not picking me, Like I
didn't get a call. And then all of a sudden
we hear racing Louisville select Jordan Bloomer University of Wisconsin.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
And I said, oh, my god, was that my name?
Speaker 3 (08:48):
And because I was literally talking to one of my
best friends on the couch next to me because I
was like, oh, it's just not me. I thought that
was maybe gonna be it. So it was crazy. The
whole room erupted.
Speaker 2 (08:57):
It was.
Speaker 3 (08:57):
It was an unbelievably exciting moment. And then I got
a phone call following being like, hey, congrats, so go celebrate.
We'll call you for real tomorrow, like and get you
all the logistics, and so it was. It was an
unbelievable time.
Speaker 1 (09:12):
That's so great. I'm so glad you're having an excellent
experience with racing Louisville. Like we said, growing an uptick,
didn't you spend some time in Australia?
Speaker 3 (09:20):
I did, and that again, I mean didn't see that coming.
But after my rookie season here in Louisville, the coaching
staff had come to me and they were like, hey,
we really want to develop you a little bit further.
How do you feel about going on loan over in
Australia during the off season, And I said, sign me up.
I was like absolutely down. So I ended up playing
(09:42):
for a club over in Sydney, Australia for about six
months and it was the coolest experience of a lifetime.
And it was all thanks to soccer and like, honestly
thanks to Racing for putting me in a position to
be able to go grow my soccer game but also
get just a one of one life experience.
Speaker 1 (09:59):
I always had the sense it's a happy place. Is
that the truth? I've not been there.
Speaker 2 (10:03):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (10:03):
I mean, I don't think they had a sad person
while I was over there. Everyone I talked to, they
were always in good moods, always smiling. I don't know
if it was the accent or my accent, because the
amount of times that I forgot that I was American
over there in the sense of like I would speak
and they were the ones that were like, oh my god,
your accent, and I was like, my accent, your accent
(10:24):
and there. So I was so fortunate to have been
able to meet so many incredible people over there.
Speaker 1 (10:30):
And when you told him you were from Wisconsin, did
any of them bring up the Green Bay Packers?
Speaker 3 (10:34):
There was one actually good. Yeah, So Packer Nation travels
around the globe.
Speaker 1 (10:40):
I know you have love for the team, so we
have to wrap up our conversation here soon. I already used
the word love. What do you think of our QB Oh.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
We love Jordan Love. I'm a big fan.
Speaker 3 (10:48):
I think he's been absolutely incredible and I love his
story too, of being able to come in, learn under rogers,
wait his time, and then when he gets his moment,
he absolutely takes it.
Speaker 1 (10:57):
So we did take a receiver in the draft here,
and so I'm happy about that because it's usually we
it's some big, four hundred pound guy from Nebraska.
Speaker 2 (11:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (11:08):
I mean, I'm stoked to finally have a first round
receiver in the in the receiver's room over there in
Green Bay. And uh, we'll just have to wait and see.
I guess when season starts, if it plays out.
Speaker 1 (11:18):
The love is great. I've been up there five times
for games and I just just it's I'm amazed every
time I'm there. It's just one of America's gems.
Speaker 2 (11:26):
It's a one of one place for sure.
Speaker 1 (11:28):
Still on the same piece of dirt, and.
Speaker 2 (11:30):
You know, basically in somebody's backyard, right that's the fun.
Speaker 1 (11:33):
They all those houses right next to it cracks me up.
And everybody. All you smell is Brot's cooking.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
Rots and a whole lot of spotted cow beers.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
It's are you allowed to eat like that? As a
goalkeeper for Racing Louisville. Are you allowed to have brought
every now and then?
Speaker 2 (11:47):
I mean every now and then? Yeah, But it can't
be you to tell them. I know, I know, I
try to.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
I try to keep my try to keep my diet
in line with what they want from us.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
But definitely when I go home, ros are on the grill.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
Or do we get to keep Jay here? I'm hearing
up and down.
Speaker 2 (12:05):
D is gonna say.
Speaker 3 (12:05):
I'm hearing some rumors that we might be losing Gyre,
but I think that would be a big loss for us,
so I hope they figured it out.
Speaker 1 (12:11):
I got a big love for him in this town,
as you're well aware of playing for you. About Jordan Bloomer,
it's great talking with you.
Speaker 2 (12:16):
Well, thank you so much for having me.
Speaker 1 (12:17):
Let's do this again sometimes hopefully goalkeeper for Racing Louisville.
Next match Friday night, seven thirty obviously Lynn Family Stadium,
Seattle's coming in and Jordan is gonna stop anything that
comes at her.
Speaker 2 (12:29):
That's the goal.
Speaker 1 (12:30):
Great talking to you.
Speaker 2 (12:32):
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (12:32):
