(00:00):
All right in the studio with usthis next few minutes. Here is Rosa
Heart, who is a stroke nursenavigator and a host of a podcast for
Norton Health called Stronger After Stroke.Hello Rosa, Hello Terry. That sounds
like a pretty good gig that youhave because you get to learn every time
you're doing a new podcast. Right. Well, I actually practice the podcasts

(00:25):
with my guests a few times.Okay, solidify what we're going to do
in that episode. Very nice.Stronger after Stroke. I think that's self
explanatory from the Norton Neuroscience Institute ResourceCenter. So obviously strokes are an issue
for people, especially in Kentucky. You're more likely to have a stroke if

(00:48):
you live in Kentucky than if youdon't live in a game. Why is
that, Well, there are geneticfactors, but there are also lifestyle factors.
We do have Kentucky fried chicken, which I would say, is you
know, an issue. Part ofour diet is pride food, but they
sell that all around the world. Is our climate an issue? I don't

(01:08):
know. Being in the Ohio Valleyfor instances that I know, it makes
it harder to breathe, but itdoesn't necessarily make you more likely to have
a stroke as far as I cantell, but clearly people go through stroke
issues everywhere. Yes, and soyou're the premise of your podcast is to
teach people that life is good asyou move forward, yes, and it

(01:30):
can be better, And how youare now isn't how you have to stay
forever. So twenty years ago,if you had a stroke, however you
were when you came in the hospital, you probably weren't going to get much
better. They were going to putyou in a chair and set you do
over to the side, and youwere just stuck that way. Advances in

(01:51):
rehabilitation have been tremendous in giving peopletheir abilities back. But also we have
new treatments that can break up theclot through clot busting medications or surgical interventions
to pull the clots out of people'sbrains, which is something we do too.
Only twenty years and that's a heckof an advancement. Yeah, there's

(02:13):
actually a whole episode of Er dedicatedto it. I think it was in
season one where they're arguing about whetheror not it was worth giving someone this
new scary medicine all to place, and now it's standard of care. So
yeah, yeah, so you cancarry on your life. I mean,
let's talk big terms here, Imean, can you get back on a

(02:36):
softball team again? Or do youtell people or people who've had strokes told
us, don't push it there.Every individual is different and we always want
to look at the cause. Ifsomeone stroke, it could be something like
they had gotten really dehydrated and theywere really healthy otherwise, but maybe they

(02:58):
got sick, got dehydrate and thenhad a clot that formed in their heart
and traveled to their brain. Theylook at if there's a hole in their
heart, they look at if theyhave atrofibrillation, which isn't the irregular heart
rhythm. They look at for clottingdisorders. So a lot of younger people
have clotting disorders that turn into strictIt can be as basic as dehydration though.

(03:21):
Yes, yes, some of mymost athletic stroke survivors that were like
hiking in Yellowstone or running a marathonright before they had a stroke. They
had very minimal risk factors. Theydidn't have high cholesterol, high blood sugar,
or high blood pressure. They hada healthy lifestyle, but they still
had excessive stress or one of themgot the flu, got super dehydrated and

(03:46):
then ended up with a clot. We're speaking with Rosa Heart. She is
the stroke Nurse Navigator for Norton Healthcare. So you talked to a lot of
people in your podcast who bring differentareas of specialty. Yes, So I
have a couple of episodes on theStronger After Stroke podcast where we interview where
I get to interview some stroke survivors. But I've really been able to curate

(04:10):
every episode to be like a goldennugget of relatable information that someone can walk
away with and feel like I learnedsomething that will make my life better.
So I do interview some neurologists, like our headache specialist, to talk about
migraine and stroke, because sometimes migrainescan present with stroke like symptoms and it's

(04:33):
hard to tell when to go tothe to the er. So they're not
necessarily interconnected, but still right onecould be a barometer of the other.
Yeah, there are some relationships there, and it's really hard to get in
to see a headache specialist and they'rereally pretty rare and have really long waiting
lists. So him taking the timeto give that the answers to these questions

(04:56):
that people have to wait months forusually is a huge gift to anybody who
has the Internet. They can accessthose answers. What's your other topic?
And your opening episodes? So yeah, the first episode is he's cranking me
up here the first episodes of StrokeSurvivor Story, followed by two episodes about
sex after whoa, Oh my,I didn't even know. Oh sex after

(05:20):
stroke. It's right, your lifeis not over. Your life a stroke.
You're a survivor and you should beable to live your best life after.
So we talk. We have aconversation with a pelvic floor therapist and
a certified sex therapist to talk aboutthe physical and emotional components and how to
have a conversation with your partner. What if they can't speak, can they

(05:43):
consent? Stuff like yeah, sowe talk about that. So yeah,
obviously you get into details more thanjust the physical presence of sexual activity among
people. But how do you connectif your physical abilities are different, can't
perform like you did? People's emotionsthough, or you see change after a

(06:04):
stroke. Yeah, a lot ofpeople will have kind of a personality change
depending on the placement of their stroke, and then a lot of people experience
anxiety and depression. It's probably moreunusual if they don't experience some anxiety and
depression, some fear of something happeningwhile you're asleep and it's like your life's

(06:26):
over. Who knows. And likemy super healthy stroke survivors who came in
and thought that they were maybe notmortal found out that they were. That's
kind of devastating. Yeah, that'sright. I mean, I've known enough
people running marathons that there are alot of people that think they're bulletproof for
everything just because well, I'm inthe best shape I've ever been in,
and it still doesn't mean your systemcan't break down exactly. So Okay,

(06:50):
so you're you're putting out new podcastsevery so often. And is it available
on the iHeart and media app?I believe, though I haven't specific please
searched for it there, feel freeto look. Well, where do we
find it? Well, it shouldbe on anywhere you listen to audio podcasts,
as well as video farm on YouTube. Our company claims they have every

(07:11):
podcast and the world's gotta be on. Well, you hold them to it,
man, If they don't have it, get in on there all right.
And it's called Stronger After Stroke?Yes, how long is each episode?
We try to keep it under twentyminutes because we want you to be
able to like drive in to workand listen to an episode. And also
someone who's just survived a stroke maynot have the attention span for like an

(07:32):
hour long podcasts Joe Rogan style,I got you. If the word navigator
is in your title, does thisgive you special skills? Do you one
of those people who always knows whichdirection you're facing? Like, which direction
are you're facing right now? I'mfacing you, Terry, I don't know
it's northwest. But that's pretty good. Oh my, I just figured navigators

(08:00):
word. It is a great word. And I was actually part of a
Bible study group called the Navigators incollege. So it feels like it came
full See it did. We'll keepup the wonderful work. Thanks. All
right, So again, you justgo to YouTube and you can find this
show. Yeah, Stronger After Strokewith Norton Healthcare. Okay, that's the
channel. Is I guarantee you thatis on our iHeart system. It has

(08:22):
to be better. It doesn't existunless it's in our system. I love
Ihearty name is Hart. There yougo that makes sense to me. Well,
you probably have some ownership in thecompany you don't even realize. I'll
take it for your leave, stopby the front desk and ask them if
they have stock options under your namethat could be there. Do I get
a bonus for coming on your show, like in the stock would be cool.

(08:43):
I have one of these minutes.Thank you, A bottle of water.
