The University of Kentucky basketball fan base is spiraling after losing to Louisville, Michigan State, and North Carolina in the first few weeks of the season. Some of the most impatient fans are already hinting that Mark Pope should be on the "hot seat" as though his job is on shaky ground.

Terry Meiners offers a musical Christmas card to University of Louisville fans as they sit back and relish UK's challenges. But...Terry closes with a warning to not get too comfortable with schadenfreude (enjoying the misery of others).

The pendulum always swings back in the opposite direction.

Happy holidays for all!

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Very very disappointing tonight for sure, But I don't think
that's who we are I do. You know, I'm really
frustrated with the eight and nine that that's not who
we've been either. But the MP four t stuff is
a little bit of trend right now that is concerning that.
We just have to find a way to break through
and have the discipline to do it. There's probably we

(00:22):
probably had a little fatigue on the floor, which I'm
gonna have to find a way to kind of dig
deeper into this rotation to get some quality minutes. That's
gonna be something really important us as we move forward.
So you know, there's a lot we have to learn,
what I mean.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
Oh, tego Away played well last night. Not many other people.
They were one of thirteen from the threes. I mean
when they say the fan base is restless, they are
who was favored to win that game? Kentucky? Okay? Seven eight?
Wasn't that at Austin yesterday? Was that we were talking
about a line yesterday?

Speaker 3 (00:59):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (01:00):
Yeah, I think seven eight.

Speaker 3 (01:01):
I think it was seven and right before the game
it dropped down to six. I had a little bet
putting my money on North Carolina to cover that yesterday.

Speaker 2 (01:10):
Well, then that must have been a pleasant outcome. It
was a nice outcome. I went to bed at halftime.
I was tired. I only had like five hours sleep
the night before. I was up shoveling snow yesterday morning
like an idiot, and so I was too tired. So
I thought, oh, they'll they'll come back and win. I
was surprised when I woke up and saw I was like,
what is going on? That's in rapp arena, Friendly confines

(01:30):
new football coach introduced. Everybody's crazy. It's energized in the house.
How did they not? How are they so flat? I
don't know.

Speaker 4 (01:37):
It's and it's coming at an interesting different time this
season because you know, the teams are playing really good
teams this time of year. Normally they'd have the whole
lineup of uh see. That's the thing Mark Pope said
in the beginning. Here's what he said when he was
hired with.

Speaker 1 (01:54):
This is a flaship program in the country, and so
I'm fully on board with all of it. We want
to play the hardest schedule, we want to play the
best teams. We want to win the most games.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
Okay, you are you are playing a hard schedule the
best teams, but gonzag is next.

Speaker 4 (02:14):
That is not gonna Yeah, they got quite the gauntlet
of skut right games coming up.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
So anyway, a lot of people obviously are saying what
in the world, And so what I'm gonna do today
for U of l fans is just let you enjoy
Christmas with some music and some comments from fans. This
is your audio Christmas card for those of you who

(02:40):
keep track of this kind of stuff.

Speaker 5 (02:45):
It is time to hit the panic button on Kentucky basketball.
This team is not good. And any of you people
who want to come in here and be like, oh,
it's just December that we can get better, Like, oh,
Kentucky fans always overreacting. I hate this fan base, always overreacting.
I've been trying to tell you since the Louisville game

(03:06):
that this team is no good. The roster construction was
laughably disgusting. I don't know what the hell Mark Pope
and his staff we're looking at in the offseason. We
missed on everybody.

Speaker 6 (03:22):
I don't know if we've spoken into existence, but we
sat there during the pregame show going. I just don't
know what the boot's gonna be if this happens, if if, if, if,
and we're here and it's worse, like this is this
is not a good place. Kentucky sucks right now, Like
this is a bad basketball team. It's poorly constructed. They
have no shooting. I don't know what Pope was thinking

(03:44):
when he assembled these guys, like he came in known
for like, hey, this guy analytically will match perfectly with
his DNA and like it's a perfect chemistry experiment for
him usually, But I don't he just threw a bunch
of garbage into a pile and said, here you go.
Oh and let's send twenty two million dollars on it.

(04:13):
That's just a taste of it.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
Right. There was Jack Pilgrim there speaking an Tannon Smith
is also a guy with an online presidence who loves
talking about UK sports. And those are guys that are
usually very positive. Boy, they're lost right now, just lost.
So anyway, I know that some people are reveling in this,
but it's not a good thing. I'm telling Louisville fans,

(04:37):
you want Kentucky on that wall. You need them on
that wall. I sound just like him, don't it. You
need Kentucky to be better because it improves your position.
Your win is more valuable. Yeah, So I mean keep
that in the right context. That's all good. You want

(04:58):
to beat your rival and then you want them to
shine the rest of the time, and then if you
meet them in the tournament, you want to beat him again.
So it's the wrong mentality, but still it's it's there
are a lot of people just walking around in circles
right now just scratching their head, going what's happening? What's
going on? And you're right, Gonzaga is a tough opponent

(05:19):
and there's a gauntlet to run after this too. Ah.

Speaker 3 (05:23):
They meet Ricky p in Saint John soon.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
Is that that's next Sunday? Right, like the thi that's
after the Gonzaga game. I think, Yeah, that's like the thirteenth.

Speaker 4 (05:32):
Yeah, that's on like a neutral court, Yeah right, Atlanta
is I think?

Speaker 2 (05:36):
So it's there are a bunch of holiday tournaments. That's
why the Louisville Kentucky game was pushed back to Veterans Day.
It's usually in late December, the basketball game, and so
they were like they didn't their their dance card was filled.

Speaker 4 (05:50):
Is Arkansas a formidable opponent for luis are they Absolutely?

Speaker 2 (05:54):
So this will be interesting tonight. So this will help
UK fans with their emotions a little bit. If Arkansas
whips up on Louisville tonight, I don't know. This Louisville
team's been great and then a couple of they've had
a couple of bad shooting nights, but it didn't matter.
The opponents couldn't step up to meet the moment. So yeah,

(06:16):
we'll see what goes on. But I mean, Louisville and
Kentucky fans work together. They're in families together, they go
to church together, and then when these games come up,
it's like it's sometimes things aren't said, but they are
just by a glance, you know. And so right now
the UK fans faces are down in the mud and
they're like, oh, give us something, just give us something.

Speaker 4 (06:42):
They've lost what three now, huh, Yeah, which is unusual
for this time of year.

Speaker 2 (06:47):
Yeah, but the opponents are premium opponents.

Speaker 1 (06:50):
They are.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
It's Louisville and Michigan State with North Carolina and there
are some other premiums coming up. I don't know, is
Ricky p still in the top twenty five. I didn't
look at the week.

Speaker 3 (07:00):
I don't think they are. They've lost a few games, Okay,
bad games.

Speaker 2 (07:03):
I'll check that out. Pope needs that one for sure
because of who it is. Oh yeah, yeah, it doesn't matter.
Remember ever since Rick Patino showed up in Lexington and
was hugging up on Mark Stoops, he was all in
and he gave him money. Remember he gave him nil
money and he posed for photos. The UK football program's

(07:25):
going into the skids, and people think that was it.

Speaker 3 (07:28):
That was the cars. Saint John's is ranked number twenty
three with the four and three record.

Speaker 2 (07:34):
Okay, so if the game is a week away, we
don't know, they'll still be ranked, or they could be
ranked heigher, who knows sure. Anyway, the Patino rub is
still there. They can say all they want. People can say, oh,
oh Rick, we're good with Rick now. No, no, wait,
you should have lived my life when Patino took the
Louisville job, because I was a little bit of the

(07:56):
the welcome wagon on that deal, trying to talk him
into it. I mean, people get really rough, they don't
forget that stuff, and some of them are still that way.
So it's just going to be interesting to watch how
that comes out. So this next ten eleven day stretch
will be interesting to see if UK basketball can rebound
people start feeling good again or else Daddy stands up

(08:19):
and says Christmas is canceled. So we'll just see how
it all goes in the coming weeks. But for right now,
just try to calm down and realize it is December.
In spite of what that one fellow said, you.

Speaker 5 (08:36):
And c is mid. If we had a halfway competent team,
if we had hit three threes in this game instead
of one, we win the game. We talked in the
off season how deep this team is on paper, and
they are on paper. But when your depth is just
not good, it doesn't really matter.

Speaker 2 (08:58):
A very blue cra
