Speaker 1 (00:00):
Won't belong and the Saint Joe's Picnic is back. Everybody
loves the picnic. Rich Flaherty joins me again because a
lot of people think about these two words cake booth.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Hi, Rich, Hey, Terry, how are you?

Speaker 1 (00:14):
The cake booth is such an important component of the
Saint Joe's Annual Picnic. It is it is. It's a.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
It's a. It is the biggest booth. It's the biggest
fundraising booth. As far as gaming at the at the picnic.
You know, and you've been there, I know you'll come
buy the booth.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
Love we are.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
We are three four people deep waiting to play pretty
much from one o'clock until eleven o'clock on set.

Speaker 1 (00:35):
Is it Dimes Quarters, I've forgot it's Quarters. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
We've had to move to quarters a few years ago,
unfortunately because of the cake costs. But people have still
we still had lots of people playing and.

Speaker 1 (00:45):
People donate cakes. I've done it myself, where you like
go to local bakeries or you just go to a
website and you donate right there. Ye, exactly how it works.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
Actually, we've totally moved away from going to the bakeries
and purely they've asked us to do that because they're
so short on staff, because they're having a hard time
getting staffed there everybody else's.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
So can I still go to a bakery, buy cakes
and donate them.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
You could probably go to Planes, which I know is
your favorite.

Speaker 1 (01:11):
Ye.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
You could go to them, and I'm sure that they
will take an order and then put it aside with
our big order that we put in. But most, almost
one hundred percent of the cakes are now donated online.
So you go to donatecakes dot com so with an
S on the end, So donatecakes dot com. On there,
there's a web. It gives you all the information about
how to donate. Actually the new website, you can now
donate not only with a credit card, but you can

(01:33):
do it on Venmo. You can do it on PayPal,
which is all brand new this year, which is great.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
That's good, more ways for people to participate. This is
such an important fundraiser for this cause because you know,
most of us that live here understand the cause, but
there are always new people here or people who have
not been awakened to Saint Joe's mission.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
Yep.

Speaker 1 (01:53):
And it's incredible, it is it is.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
I mean Saint Joe's been around since eighteen eighty five.
So this is the one hundred and seventy sixth consecute
to picnic. Even during COVID, we we had little mini
stuff go on, but you know, we kept the COVID
the picnic tradition alive over that time. They act they
had actually benefited and helped seventy five thousand kids, and
here in Louisville and the surrounding states, and.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
Some kids in some really tough circumstances of life exactly.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
And they have kids who have been removed from their
homes and put into residential treatments programs on the campus there.
They they worked with foster kid getting kids in foster homes, adoptions,
lots of kids who just need they're looking for their
permanent home.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
And this is the oldest ongoing picnic.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
You know, I've done a lot of research because of
the cake Booth. I think it's the longest ongoing picnic
in the US. I truly believe that I haven't been
able to find any other one listed. And certainly here
in Kentucky and all the surrounding states are we doing
two days this year? We are same thing. So we
have Friday night, we have them trying to look here
the Soul Circus, the band so Circus Friday Night this year,

(03:01):
which they are fantastic, the biggest, you know, I like
to say, the biggest party band in Louisville. And then
we've got a whole set of So that's from five
o'clock until eleven o'clock on Friday. The Cake Booth. If
you're coming on Friday, we don't open un till six
because a lot of our volunteers work till five, so
they need to give them some time.

Speaker 1 (03:19):
What weekend are we talking about.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
This is the eighth of Friday, the eighth of August,
and then Saturday, the ninth of August, and then obviously
Saturday is the typical starts at noon, goes until eleven thirty.
Cake Booth will be open that entire time. All the
booths will be open most of that most of that time.
Beer will be flowing on both days, so there's plenty
of beer to drink.

Speaker 1 (03:39):
My high school class we work at one of the booths.
And that's what this is. It's tied to all these
different local groups who say we'll take care of the
plant booth or this booth or that booth, because there
are lots of different things for people to do, and
it's just you're raising funds for this noble cause. So
it's great fun to get together to see people. It's
like a family reunion here in Louisville. Every year the

(03:59):
same of Children's Home needs the money and Louisville comes
through as they have for one hundred and seventy whatever
it was.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
Oh yeah, honey, we have two hundred volunteers just in
our booth. I need to call it a thank you
to Saint Patrick's Church, Catholic Church, that's who is supports
the booth and has supported it for many many years.
I was remiss and sorry to Kenny out there. It
is actually the the cake booth presented by SMI Automotive
over in Saint Matthew's or Cobard's Lane. Kenny is our

(04:30):
presenting sponsor this year and SMI and we appreciate their support.
I can make a testimony to Kenny and the work
he does. In fact, that's where my car went after
as I had my flat tire on the way down
here today. It went over to Kenny. But so great
organization and we could not do this without our sponsors.

Speaker 1 (04:47):
So put it on your calendar. It's a Saint Joe's
Children's Home excuse me annual picnic and it's August eighth
and ninth, and it's a big band night on Friday
night and good times there and then all day Saturday.
And if you want to help the cake booth, here's
the website.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
Yes, go to www dot donate cakes all one word
with an s dot com and that's where you just
donate a cake. It's fifteen dollars pays for a cake
on average, so if you can donate one, that's great.
You got your listeners donated. What was it It was
eight seven and forty nine dollars last year for cakes,
so we're able to buy a ton of cakes with that.

(05:23):
It's fifty cakes for us, and we need every cake
we can get because we do we do, we do
not have, rarely have cakes. At the end, we give
away every cake we have.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
All right, so jump on there now. And oh and
we didn't even talk about the match. Well what am
I thinking? We have a family foundation. It's going to
match every donation up to one thousand dollars from your listeners.
So if you're if you donate a fifteen dollars. You're
actually buying two cakes instead of one. Okay, good, so
I totally forgot. Can we forget that that's why we're here.

(05:52):
But yes, definitely take advantage of this. Up to one
thousand dollars. We can get a donated your donation doubled
from our Family Foundation. Excellent, all right, donatecakes, donatecakes dot com.
Very good, Rich Flaherty. Great to see you back in
a minute on news radio eight forty WUHS.
