Speaker 1 (00:00):
Ladies and gentlemen I have. I have many friends just
because of all these years of work. And then I
have really hey, hey, stop now, I haven't introduced you yet.
I have some very good friends, and I have very
learned from whom I learned lessons about life, just because
(00:20):
they're smart and they're they're wise educationally speaking and through life.
And one of the people I look up to is
this Guy's name's nat Irvin the Second. He's the Assistant
dean for Thought Leadership and Civic Engagement and at the
University of Louisville College of Business. He's won a million
awards National Black NBA Association Executive Leadership Council. He's authored
(00:47):
books like The Chase for twenty forty two Meaning the
Year National Black NBA Association twenty fifteen Award recipient h
naw Award of Relevance. I'm reading your bio here and
I'm thinking, this guy's got more words than Helen Mirren.
You know, So here you are. I see you post
online a little while ago that you went outside for
(01:08):
a run today.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
That's one hundred and ten degrees.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
That's exactly Let me tell you, I didn't go out
there by myself. I've been in training Terry for the
last few weeks and I've had the benefit of training
with the coach of the University of Louisville track and
field coach, Joe Franklin. He's been preparing me for this
trip I'm about to take where I'm going to seventy
(01:33):
fourth birthday.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
I'm going to Mongolia. Wow.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
And I set a goal for myself in terms of
what kind of conditioning I need to be in, also
what kind of weight I wanted to have, and so
I put myself in a jam by asking the coach
if he would train me.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
So he's been.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
Running with me, so I didn't just run by myself.
We ran those two miles together. And so yeah, it
was right in the middle of the day. Normally we
run at four. This time he had an appointment at
three point thirty, so we ran.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
It two and it was hot, very very hot. It's insane.
Speaker 1 (02:09):
I walked my dog like ten o'clock to Spots and
I worked out inside and the air conditioning. And you're
a smart man. I can't believe that you're doing this.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
But I did it.
Speaker 3 (02:20):
Man, I did it, and I'll be uh and I'm
you know, I was, of course hydrated, and you know,
of course obviously I'm working with you know, one of
the best in the world, so you know, I was
in good shape. Paying attention to Sadlow would give us,
you know, the restriction right he puts on us. So
I made sure I kept the numbers right. But I
got after it. Let me tell you that right now.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
Good for you.
Speaker 1 (02:39):
I went out about noon. It RAN's a couple of
errands around noon today, and I saw a couple look
like high school boys, maybe freshman high school age, and
they were running. But they had those camel man. You
know what those are, those water things that are on
your back like a back.
Speaker 2 (02:54):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I've heard about those.
Speaker 3 (02:56):
Yeah yeah, you didn't have that, Okay, No, no, no,
I didn't.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
I just I just ran. We just ran for about
twenty five thirty minutes whatever it is.
Speaker 3 (03:04):
Maybe it's a little bit longer than that, but you know,
we I'm under good supervis.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
It's true if you're you're under good tutelage there because
you're you're a leader yourself, you and your wife are
globe trotters. I see you show up in more countries
than ambassadors.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
I mean, it's a stout. You know what.
Speaker 3 (03:21):
Well, part of the challenge, a part of the opportunity
of being a professor at the university, a great University.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
Of Louisville College.
Speaker 3 (03:28):
Of Business the eighteenth year, is that I get to
lead NBA students as part of our global NBA experience
to countries all around the world. So the last two
happened to be Croatia and Instanbul in Turkey, and then
of course I had to give it. I had the
privilege of joining the Inner in Greece to give a
(03:50):
talk an artificial intelligence. And so that's a part of
what I get to do is being a professor. But
this trip coming up to Mongolia, I'm celebrating a seventy
fourth birthday, gonna live in tents and ride horses.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
Oh my goodness, good for you. That is so awesome.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
And I'm going with a dear free celebrating her eighty
fourth birthday and a few other friends from around the country.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
So I'm so impressed you're able to get out of
this heat and handle this. Good luck, good luck to you,
and this is good inspiration, Nat, just for you to
say you're gonna be seventy four years old, You're running
two miles, it were the heat index of one hundred
and ten. And so for other people that are listening
and saying, you know what, I need to do more,
and we're not saying go out and do that, but
(04:33):
do something.
Speaker 2 (04:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
Well, you know, Henry, Terry, you know, you and I
both pay attention to what doctor Henry Sadloe says about
the heart, you know, paying attention to some very important numbers,
which and certainly the fact that we have you and
I both and others have lost dear friends to heart
sudden heart attacks.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
It's just that it was a reminder to me.
Speaker 3 (04:59):
I know, it's a reminder to you and all our
friends to pay attention to your health. And it's the
best thing to do is and I have you know,
my wife and I we have trainers, we have coaches,
and we try to stay active. And I just think
that you don't have to be and you know, you
don't have to be an athlete, but you do have
(05:19):
to move and sometimes the best way to do it
is just do it with others. I would not be
able to count were it not for my coach.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
Now he's of course a professional.
Speaker 3 (05:29):
He knows how to psychologically trick me into doing it
without telling me what we're going to do.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
I don't want to do it.
Speaker 3 (05:36):
But with them, with Joe Franklin, I can't disappoint him,
and which I didn't.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
And he's a you know, world class trainer.
Speaker 3 (05:43):
He you know, he's he is training world class champions
at the University of Louisville whole vaulty swimming. I mean,
you know, of course I'm at the University of Louisville,
so you know we have championships.
Speaker 1 (05:54):
Everywhere, absolutely right, And you also bring in championship students
into the show now and again to I'm I was
impressed by these young men and women that you bring
to the radio station.
Speaker 3 (06:04):
I well, I'm glad you asked about that, because we're
currently right now hosting in partnership with the Lincoln Foundation,
an annual program that we do in the summer, and
this is where we recruit kids in partnership with a
Lincoln Foundation. This is a partnership that's twenty something years
old where these students spend two weeks with us on
camp with the fundamentals of business entrepreneurship. They get they
(06:25):
earn a Google Analytics certificates, they learn all about AI
how to build a business from scratch, how to build
a user a business canvas. It's taught by doctor Sharon Carrick,
who is a professor in the College of Education appointment
in Engineering.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
We have two.
Speaker 3 (06:40):
Colleagues, one from thee who is a volunteer, Jose Nahara
who's been with us. Miguel Hampton who is a member
of the local community who also is one of the
faculty members that we have some members of our own
College of Business who services faculty members. So we have
some amazing kids who are going to be doing their
business presentation next Friday and competition.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
We get big prizes.
Speaker 3 (07:02):
If you want to come and be a judge, Terry,
if somebody would like to be a judge to see
these kids, it will help you to understand why I'm
always optimistic about the students in our community, the youth
of the future, and why they should be too.
Speaker 1 (07:16):
I feel good about what's ahead of a lot of
times through these students that you've introduced me to.
Speaker 2 (07:20):
Thank you well. We got some great ones, man, we
got some great ones.
Speaker 1 (07:24):
Nat come into the radio after you get back from
Mongolia and we'll have a chat about that.
Speaker 2 (07:29):
I look forward to it. Buddy, you're the best.
Speaker 1 (07:31):
You're the best, all right, don't get hurt, but I'm
I'm impressed with your open the seat. You are partially nuts.
I know that now. I am truly take care of
me for everybody.
Speaker 2 (07:43):

Speaker 1 (07:43):
