Aired July 16, 2023: Lisa Foxx chats with Layla Kasha, the SVP, Chief Marketing & New Stores Growth Officer for Grocery Outlet Bargain Market stores about their annual Independence from Hunger food drive. It's going on now thru the end of July.

For 77 years, Grocery Outlet has been committed to giving back to local community organizations and their annual ‘Independence From Hunger’ food drive is one of the many ways they give back year-round. Since they launched the food drive, back in 2011, the Independence from Hunger campaign efforts have collected nearly $16.5 million dollars nationwide to help feed those in need in local communities. The campaign will collect cash donations and pre-made bags of nonperishable foods in-store at Grocery Outlet’s 450 locations that will be distributed to local food agencies partners. With the ongoing inflation, families continue to turn to food banks as 34 million people in the United States are currently food insecure.

Hi there, It's Lisa Fox andthis is the iHeart So Cal Show.
Okay. For seventy seven years,Grocery Outlet, you know, I gotta
sing at Grocery Outlet Bargain Market hasbeen committed to giving back to local organizations
where their stores are, and theirIndependence from Hunger food Drive is one of
the many ways they give back yearround. Since they launched the food drive

(00:23):
back in twenty eleven, the Independencefrom Hunger campaign efforts have collected nearly sixteen
point five million dollars nationwide to helpfeed those in need. We have a
month to be a part of itat stores near you, and it's such
an easy way to have a hugeimpact on people who are in need,
So easy right there when you doyour grocery shopping. And most folks know

(00:45):
I am a super fan of GrocryOutlet Bargain Market, so I wanted to
spread that love and talk more aboutit with their SVP Chief Marketing and News
Stores Growth Officer, Laila Kasha.Hi, Laila, Hey, thanks for
having me. Oh my gosh.Well, as most people know, I'm
always tooting your horn, tooting thehorn of Groceryalit Bargain Market and I always
just sum it up by saying, best deals, nicest people, and we

(01:07):
love the local aspect. I lovethe mom and pop's vibe. I love
that the store owners o their pictures, write their picture in, their names,
are right up at the front ofthe store. So you're like being
introduced. No matter where you shop, you're being introduced to the person that
you can ask questions and you know, know them, might get to know
my name, and you know, the personal relationship begins the second you walk
in the front door. So there'syou know, many reasons why I'm a

(01:30):
huge fan, and then of coursethe whole giving back parts. So yes,
Grocery Outlet, Well, I lovethat, I love that you're such
a big fan, and I lovethat you sing the Jingo right, but
how could I not? So wekick it off with a song and then
we talk about the importance of givingback with Grocery Oulet. How long have
you been with a company? Ihave been here over six years. Okay,

(01:53):
well, you know I can't speakfor other companies, but what is
it about groceryalted bargain market that makesgiving back such an intrule part of what
each store does locally and just partof kind of like the overall part of
the mission of what the company isall about. Oh, it's absolutely important,
not just for the communities that weserve, but it's also important for
the independent operators. You mentioned itearlier. Every store is owned by a

(02:16):
local person that lives in your town, lives in your neighborhood, lives down
the street from you. They're veryconnected to their communities. And you think
about big companies. Yes, everyone'sdoing their part and giving to these big
overarching organizations, but we give tovery local, very specific, very small
food partners in many cases, andso people that sometimes are overlooked by these

(02:37):
big, giant organizations. There's peoplethat are food banks, they are people
that are in different types of givingsituations. We donate during IFH did lots
of different partners in the community, people that are like pet shelters and people
that are doing food banks, andpeople that are in church situations that are
have their pantries there. So there'sa lot of different groups and the independent

(02:58):
operators make those selection is based onwhat their community needs the most. So
it's very special, it's very specific, and it's very tailored to these individual
towns. I love that I lovethat, and they make it so easy
wherever you shop. I mean there'sover sixty five stores in Southern California alone,
so sixty five in the whole throughoutthe Southern California region, four hundred

(03:20):
and fifty nationwide, So it's veryeasy to find this store near you.
I shop a lot at the Burbankone because the radio station is located in
Burbank. So I go to ToddStore. See I know Todd and I
love it. Yeah, yes,And so as a regular shopper at Todd
Store, they make it so easy, so I know that all the locations
have it set up so easy tobe a part of this independence from Hunger

(03:43):
food drive. Right when you walkin, you see the big tables set
up with all the food bags thatare all packed and ready to go to
give to the people at these localorganizations who need it most. And the
easiest way that you can give outand kind of get that ball rolling is
doing what you can to give atcheckout because when you give five, you
get five right back. Yeah,So give five, get five is just

(04:04):
a great way for us to giveback to the people that are donating.
So if you donate five dollars ormore in a single transaction, you will
receive a five dollars off coupon fora future purchase of over twenty five dollars
or more. So that can beyou could buy a five dollars premade bag,
which we'll get you in a second, or you could just give five
dollars cash and if you do that, we will give you an offer to

(04:25):
come back at another time and givediscounts. So all the stores are a
part of this food drive for themonth of July. And a Todd st
and Burbank he has ten food bagsalready prepackets are ready to donate. That's
right, Well, those bags areactually so specifically, the premade bags are
made per the request of whatever thecharity they're working with is. So some

(04:46):
some food banks might need, youknow, a ton of pasta. Some
food banks might say, hey, look we're really we need canned fish and
we need these are the things thatwe need. We need peanut butter,
so they'll supply a lift to thestore and the store will do their best
to put that in the And thenalso many stores will do a variety of
bag sizes, so they might havea five dollar bag, a seven dollar
bag, a ten dollar bag,so everyone can give it their level,

(05:09):
whatever the level that is, andthat bag goes right into the bin and
goes right to the partner. Yeah, and again, it's so easy.
I just went over the weekend andI'm like, okay, and I didn't
do my big grocery shopping this trip. I just did like maybe forty bucks,
you know, a couple of thingsthat I needed. And then I'm
going, oh, what's another five, what's another ten? It's so easy.
And the gall in front of medid it, and the gall behind

(05:30):
me did it. We're all talkingand we all like it just made us
feel really good. And it's justa nice way to say, Okay,
I got some things from me.I can afford an extra five or ten
bucks to help somebody else who isreally just strapped, strapped for cash.
Lord knows what the bad situation maybe. But if we can help put
some food and people's bellies and helpthem feel that love, that is everything.
I mean, that's what it's allabout, bringing people together to do

(05:51):
good for others, you know, good for people who need it. That's
right, it's so important. Ithink you know the reason we do it
in July. People have asked thisa lot, like why don't you do
it around Thanksgiving? Why don't youdo it at Christmas. The reason we
do it in July is because twelvemillion kids are in food insecure household and
during the school year they have opportunityto get breakfast in lunch in their school

(06:14):
programs, but in the summer,it's really hard for them to get any
kind of food, and so thefood banks become very depleted because a lot,
you know, the parents are havingto get more food into the house
to try and feed that and sowith that many kids in the summer's it's
the natural time for us to stepup and say, hey, we can
be a partner. We can helpout because of people like you and those

(06:36):
ladies that were in the line withyou that we're reaching into their pockets.
It's hard, right now, weget it, we understand it. But
with people like you and all theseother folks that are so generous to contribute,
we can help these twelve million kidsas best we can and help try
and get some help on the way, some relief. Yeah, and you
know, like Leila said, yougive five, you get five, So

(06:58):
really you're kind of being imbursed foryour givings, so you give five.
I got my coop, I'm rightAwa, I got my coup on on
my purse, so I'm ready towhip it out next time I head down
the street and say tod I'm back, and then we love it, and
then maybe I'll do another bag oranother bag. It's really up to you
whatever you can do, but justknow it feels good and it's an option
when you walk in the store. And I kind of feel too, like
when I shop there Grocery Oulid bargainMarket, because I'm getting such great deals

(07:23):
the savings. I'm already getting somuch in the savings that I feel like,
you know, the least I cando is be a part of this
and give back five bucks and thenagain I get reimbursed the five right away,
so it's a win win for everybody. That's the best way to give
is in the store at your nearestgrocery outlod bargain market store. Every location
is doing this. You're gonna findthe table right in the front of the

(07:44):
store. Like Leila said, someof them are doing different amounts five,
seven, and ten and whatnot. So that's one way to do it.
In store physically, and then youcan also do it online. Yeah,
so you can go to Grocery Outletdot com slash donate and those donations will
support the San Francisco Bay Area communitywith our partnership with the Alameda Community Foot
County Food Bank. So that's ourthat that donation to the website goes specifically

(08:07):
to the Alameda County Community Food Bank. Got it, Okay? But also
if you want to know what partnersyour stores are partnering with, you can
go to that same website grosser outlike dot com slash donate and you can
look for your store and it'll tellyou who they're partnering with. So good
curiency here so you can know it, you know, and on a lot
of these stores partner with more thanone. You know, they might want

(08:28):
to do a pet shelter and thefood bank and a church. Some people
pick one and consolidate all their efforts. It just depends on what their community
is in need of at that time. But you can see, you can
see who tats supporting. Yeah,I was curious. I was curious about
that. I was going to ask, but he wasn't at the store at
the time, so I was curiousof like, oh, I wonder where
exactly my stuff is going, becauseI'm just curious. I'm not nosy,

(08:52):
but I was curious. Like,Okay, well, it's goods to know
where it's going, right, youwant to know maybe it's somebody that you
support, or it's maybe you're notaware of that's doing some really great things
from your community. And just onelast way in store to donate. You
know, five dollars is too much. You can round up your change,
so you can round up your transactionto the next dollar and those and those
funds matter. Oh, we canall add up. Oh we can also

(09:13):
round up. Okay, I wasprobably talking so much that I didn't I
didn't realize. I was probably sobusy talking and video taping my transaction to
like share on social media, thatI wasn't even paying attention. No,
that's okay, but that's a greatway to do it. Yeah, you
can round up to a round upthe dollar and given whatever way that you
can, and you'll see it allover the store. I saw even a

(09:35):
checkout. You know, so andso gave a dollar, So and so
gave five dollars. So again there'syou know, the hands on with the
food bags or just a flat outdonation. But when you give five,
you can get five right back withthat coupon, and you feel like that's
a nice way for the company tosay thank you for giving back, and
y'all are given so much. Soit's um kudos to Grocilled Bargain Market for

(09:56):
carrying so much about our local communitiesand these store owners who care so much
about you know, Todd in thecity of bird Bank and our friends and
Thousand Oaks and Arcadia and Long Beach. I mean, gosh, the stores
have been to so many through theradio station. I've gotten to know a
lot of these families who own them, Canoga Park, Chatsworth, I mean,
the list goes on and on.So it's a nice way to get

(10:18):
to know it. I'm getting outthere. I'm getting out there, okay.
So to be a part of agrocery outlets independence from the Hunger Food
Drive, it goes through the endof July. The stores are already set
up the second you walk in.If you want to be a part of
it. The food is there, bagged and ready to give to somebody a
need. You can donate whatever youcan check out. If you give five,
you'll get five ride back via acoupon for a future visit. You

(10:41):
can round up your change right therecheckout. You can donate online and find
out where your stores are giving, who your stores are giving, the food
too, and the money Grocery Outletdot com slash donate and then mention real
quickly lot what are the other waysthat Grocery Outlet Bargain Market gives back year
round because it's not just like aonce a year thing. This is a
year long commitment to get back tothe community where every store is. Yeah,

(11:05):
so every store has their own givebackprogram, which is again the beautiful
part of Grocery Outlet is everyone canpick what is important to them to their
community. And several of our operatorsdo multiple fundraisers throughout the year. We
have operators doing lots of crazy thingsto bring attention to I FH. We

(11:26):
have people that are sitting on topof semi trucks four days until the truck
gets fulled. Create that's happening.I love that in Long Pope, California.
I know in lock Pope, California, our former CEO and current chairman
of the board went out there withone of the operators and jumped out of
a plane. Oh my gosh,to bring attention to Yeah, so locks

(11:48):
are really cool thing to huge need. Should I do something crazy? I
mean, I'm kind of down todo it. Maybe we should brainstorm later.
I don't know, I'm kind ofcrazy like that, that idea we
should. We should think about somethingfine, we could do and that would
be great. We'll get talks aresomething. Yeah, we'll let Todd do
that and I can watch them down. I'll catch him now. We'll figure

(12:09):
out something. But I'm totally downto do anything to bring more attention to
the fact that all the Grocrillied bargainmarket stores are doing this incredible independence from
Hunger food drive at each and everylocation, and however you're able to get
back, just know it truly goesright back in your own community, like
Leila said, to local churches, food banks, food pantries, maybe even
a pet pantry, pet food pantries. So there's so many ways it's so

(12:33):
easy to give in store stop byeven just a couple bucks. Round up
your change, however, and whateveramount you can do a little bit of
something, it all adds up.And like I said, over the year,
sixteen point five million over the yearssince this whole food Drive began,
and that is just that is alot of love and very well organized on
y'all's part to get it done andbring everyone together and make it happen,

(12:56):
you know, helping people who needit most. We love our communities and
we love to be able to dothis. So so far this year we're
over just over a million dollars,So yeah, that matters. Every single
penny matters. So whatever you cando, we appreciate it. We know
times were hard, but we havea goal and we are aiming to hit
it, hopefully before at the endof the month. But we're working hard

(13:18):
on that and we can't do itwithout your hope. And again I implore
you to stop by your neighborhood groceryoutlet, bargain market store. Get to
know the awesome people who own thesestores, individuals, many family owned.
I love when it's like a youknow, a husband and wife team,
you know a couple and they've gottheir kids working there. It's like a
whole family affair and just super supernice people, best deals, nice people

(13:39):
and they're givers. We love givers, and they're making it so easy to
get back and be a part ofthe independence from Hunger food drive again.
Check out the website to find outspecifically where your food and your dollars are
going from the store that you shopat. You can find out specifically all
the info Grocery outlet dot com, slash donate, Grocery outlet dot com slash

(14:00):
should donate, and when you stopby you can give five and get five
right back and feel that love.Absolutely, let's go right now. I'm
fared up. Let's go all right, leyla Hasha. Thank you so much
for all that you do and everyonethere grows. Try Outlet bargain Market,
thank you for all that you doto give back, and we'll see you

(14:20):
