Well hither it's Lisa Fox. Thanksso much for listening. This is the
iHeart So Cal Show. Okay, who's ready for the Day of the Dog.
Yes, animal lovers, I'm talkingabout you and your furry besties.
A massive festival, the largest festivalfor dogs in North America, is taking
over southern California this coming Saturday, specifically Main Street in Santa Monica. A

(00:22):
whole bunch of blocks starreda September ninth, from noon to five. The Day
of the Dog fundraiser is the ultimatecelebration of that special bond between US humans
and our canines. It's an annualfestival and it's all for free, a
dave unparalleled fun and shopping and entertainmentfor the whole family. And it's a
big fundraiser for the Just Love AnimalsSociety, a nonprofit organization with the focus

(00:46):
on community outreach and animal welfare. So here to tell us more? Well,
the website for all the info isthe Day of the Dog dot com.
But here to tell us more isthe founder of the organization and the
event, Lonnie Powell. Hi,Lonnie, Hey, how are you doing
for having me on? So welove animal lovers and the Day of the
Dog already sounds like a blast,So thank you for loving all animals,

(01:06):
but especially dogs, because you know, we have a lot of dog lovers
here in southern California, so thisis a We're already excited. Whether you
have a dog or not, thisis gonna be the place to be.
Yeah, we've been waiting to goto California for a couple of years now,
so we are super super excited tobe coming down there. In Septchambers.
So your organization is based in Canada, but you do help and work
with local charities, especially for thisDay of the Dog event happening next starting
in Santa Monica. But tell ushow this all got started. I mean

(01:30):
I always admire people. You know, it's one thing to be an animal
lover, but to take it tothe next level with starting a charity and
then a massive event like this thathas thousands taken over the streets of a
major city, I mean, it'sit's a lot. So maybe kind of
talk about how all this got startedfor you. Yeah, of course,
it's actually kind of a bit ofa funny stripe kind of lived all over
the world, and I was actuallythe nightclub business before I got my first

(01:53):
dog, my one turn to tworeal fast, and unfortunately he was a
victim of poisoning. And when thathappened, we took a really big holistic
approach to healing, so with acompletely new world to myself and my partner
that aspect of it. He didn'tmake a good recovery. We got an
extra couple of years, I am, but that kind of sparked our life

(02:15):
change. We knew we wanted tobe around them. We knew wanted to
cater our lives to being a messageand bringing cultural movement of like minded individuals
together, and that's kind of wherethe foundation began. We wanted to educate
people on holistic care, and wewanted to host community events and bring like
minded people together annually and celebrate thehuman canine bond. So that's kind of

(02:38):
where everything started from. And thenhow does your organization just love animals society?
How do you get back to thelocal Charnes here in something California.
Yeah, So we work with aboutseven hundred companies across North America and I'll
probably say one hundred to one hundredand fifty rescues, nonprofits, startups,

(02:58):
and organizations doing good in their community, so we send out kind of a
wish list and we kind of actas a go to between them and our
corporate sponsors. We have donated overa million dollars of free real estate or
booth space to local organizations and allof our festival cities, we have donated
close to one hundred and fifty thousanddollars of free space to small startups account

(03:19):
Afford to come. We work ona marketing campaign for them. We just
are very fortunate to work with beautifulpeople with beautiful minds, and we just
try to combate what it is theyneed to thrive in their communities to help
the people to need help. Ilove that, and I also love how
this document is next level that's goingto be, you know, as we
might say that the Instagram event ofthe year for Dogs Day the dog next

(03:44):
Saturday in Santa Monica, with allthe super fun, over the top things
that you have planned. We currentlydon't have a dog. We are currently
cat people. I'm not going toeven get mad at you for not including
cats because we just went to catCon a few weekends ago. So we
got our cat fix at cat Conand we rescued our kiddy because he just
kind of shut up as a feralkid in our backyard. So we are
currently cat people. We would liketo add to our brood when the time

(04:08):
is right. But this sounds likethe biggest, craziest dog party ever.
So talk about the idea. Andthen you got to run down the list
of all the things are gonna havea doggy brunch. You got a foam
party for dogs, you got asuperhero photo booth for dogs. I mean,
this is gonna be the cool Iwant to be a dog, like
to enjoy the coolest party next Saturday. Just for the Just for the record,

(04:29):
it does say day the dogs, but we get cats, and we've
had pigs. Oh you do?Oh good, hey we've had of course,
of course we were actually pioneers. We fifteen years ago took the music
special template and put it towards thepet industry, seeing kind of a dying
model when it comes to expos andtrade shows and markets, and we wanted
to be very heavy on entertainment andattractions like you know, and offer the

(04:53):
community just the best day they couldever think of, yoga with a dowtful
puppies, wags and walks. Wehave a hundred percent success rate of adoption
after the event. We have custompools coming down for cool down stations.
We have lifeguards on site to brendyour dogs up and down. We have
canine cabanas. We have DJs comingdown. We have a superhero theme photo
booth which includes the capes, themaths, and the winding machine, the

(05:15):
brunch for dogs, the right theway. We have a seventy foot truck
coming in where dogs can try surfingfor free. Oh, we got fashion
shows, we got holistic pop uplounges. We're known for our races,
the running of the bulls, theFrench bulldog races, Weiner dog races,
orgy run the Yeah, it's it'sit's the most is the most amount of

(05:40):
fun you could have in the daywith your with the modern day family.
It's it's just such a wonderful,wonderful experience. Wait, Lonnie didn't mention
a best in show Snaggle Tooth showcase. What's that about? That's new this
year? And and our vessels we'vehad thus far, there's been a couple
hundred entries per city and is takenthe crowd by story. It's absolutely funnest

(06:02):
thing you could ever see in yourlife. And again this is all for
free and all just for fun atthe big Day of the Dog festivities taken
overy Cinamonica next Saturday. But itsounds like we do need to go.
A great place to go would bethe website because it's all for free but
free, full schedule of events anddetails of the Day of the Dog Just
go to the Day of the Dogdot com for more and we're completely free

(06:23):
festival for the community. I willnever charge them to come. The only
ticket is thing is the yoga withadoptable puppies, and then the proceeds of
that will go to the rescue thatwe're working with it or bringing the puppies
down. So that's the only ticketthat you need. Other than that,
everything else is free to attempt.Okay, but what about for some of
the races are the competitions. Imean some of us might be a little
competitive with our pups. I mean, if I had a winter dog,

(06:44):
I want my winner to win.Do we need to sign up on the
website ahead of time to let youknow they're coming, or just bring our
dog and have a blast, orjust show up animal lovers and play it
by ear you and you're Wiener needto show up and it's pre registration on
site and all the information will beon the website for race, so it's
no preregistration. You have to bethere the day of and then the schedule

(07:04):
is online if you want to checkthat out. And when it comes to
anything else, it is free toattend and nothing is ticketed. Love it,
love it, love it, Andthen I'll talk about you mentioned.
I know Wags and Walks is anorganization that you work with locally. Talk
about what you know about them andhow you're able to contribute to their efforts
and making lives better for animals. You know what, there's so many wonderful

(07:25):
organizations in California and just all overNorth America. They just need help.
They need exposure. They need tolet the community know who they are and
what's going to help them thrive inthe situation that they're in. I mean,
head ownership is up about forty percentacross the board, and the pandemic
kind of put a king to thatwhen it comes to people's expenses and what
they can or can't afford. Soevery organization that needs community support, we

(07:49):
just want to give a platform too, so they can let people know who
they are and what they need tokeep doing the good work they're doing in
your city. I know you mentionedall this fun stuff that some sounds like
it's mostly for dogs. What mightyou have for us adults who are they're
kind of taking in all the action? Do we have we have food and
a beer and wine set it forus or what do we have for the
for us people? So the bestthing about the day the dogs festivals.

(08:13):
You're kind of getting two festivals inthe one open main Street, So I'm
taking over two city blocks strand toOcean Park and then past Ocean Park on
the way to Venice. The DowntownBusiness Association of Santa Monica is doing their
Open Main Street. So we havebeer gardens, and we have food trucks,
and we have DJs and we havemusic. So it's it's going to

(08:33):
be quite a day for everyone toexperience when it comes to the dog element
and then the food, culture andart element that's being carried on all the
way to Venice. So we havesomething for everybody. I love it and
remember it to me A lot ofpeople and a lot of pets, So
be ready. You can come solo, come with friends, come with the
family, come with your pets, but only if your pets are down to

(08:56):
hang in large crowds. We dowe see a one hundred thousand people in
six weeks or festival season, butwe do encourage responsible ted ownership. So
if you're dog knocking crowds and notgood and heat if it's hot, we
just asked you to please lead topop at home and grab all the free
stuff you can grab and at homeand again it's on leash. It is
responsible tide ownership. You know yourdog and we just say, you know,

(09:18):
come out, have a good timeand be with other dog lovers and
and know your dog and know whatsituations that they thrive. And it sounds
like it's just going to be anabsolute blast. So again we encourage you
to find out more and get readyfor a full day of packs. Fund
for you and your dog at theDay of the Dog brought to you by
Just Love Animal Society and that's happyNext Saturday, September the ninth, from
twelve to five. All the inforecapped at the Day of the Dog dot

(09:41):
com and Lonnie we look, areyou able to bring your dog down or
going to be too busy working? No, unfortunately not I got big great
dames at home. They get tostay home and watching that football work.
