Speaker 1 (00:02):
Shrock Innovations presents the midwest number one independent computer repair
company with service centers and Lincoln Paul Maha a billion
des Moines and across the country via the Shrock desk.
This is Compute This.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
Good morning, folks, and welcome into Compute this. My name
is Thor schrockam the owner of the Shrock Innovations computer company.
Looking for your calls here this morning. We are live
and local for you at four zero two five five
eight eleven ten tot free. If you're outside of the
metro area. Eight eight eight two five zero two zero
nine one is the number to join us on the program.

(00:38):
We are also live at Facebook dot com slash Shrock Innovations.
That's right, you can. You can tune in their Facebook
dot com slash Shock Innovations and you can watch your radio.
It's a little more entertaining sometimes, you know, if you're
a lip reader, you get to see things during the
commercial break, you know, whatever we're talking about in here.
But but no, it's you know, it's not like TikTok
where you just get a black screw or anything. Right now,

(01:01):
got some information on that one coming up for you
here in a minute too. We're gonna We're gonna tell
you exactly what is happening. We covered this a little
bit on Thursday when I was doing a fill in
at the radio station. You know what's gonna happen? And
the answer was, if you're well prepared, pretty much nothing.
But most people aren't well prepared, so something. But it's
not the end of the world. We're gonna tell you
what's going on there. If you did miss the compute

(01:22):
this program last week, we we covered a lot of
ground last week.

Speaker 3 (01:26):
You know.

Speaker 2 (01:26):
One of the things we try to do on this program. Obviously,
this program exists to promote the products and services of
Shrock Innovations. You know of my company. You know, we
we build computers for customers, we fix computers for customers,
and we want to be top of mind when you
need us. It's kind of like being a plumber. You know,
you don't really who's your computer REPAIRU who's your plumber?

(01:46):
Like who's your electrician? You know, like you don't need
an electrician until the outlet stops working, or the switch
stops working, or you need to put in a new
breaker for something. You don't need a plumber until well,
you really need a plumber. You know, you don't need
a computer guy until you need a computer guy. And
we want to be your computer people. We want to
be the place that you can call, that you can

(02:07):
trust to shoot you straight, to give you the honest truth.
Had a wonderful experience. I always talk about negative experiences,
like when I have bad service. Out'm like, this was
bad service. And somebody wants asked, me, well, thora you
never talk about the good service you've had, And you
know what, you know something. I don't know anything about
car audio. I don't know anything about it. And I

(02:28):
went into in Phase Audio in Omaha to my son
got a car stereo for Christmas and he was going
to try to put it in himself, and it became
a whole problem and there was no support, no instructions
on the internet. We call it in Phase and they're like, well,
we wouldn't install that either, because if something goes wrong,
then we're on the hook and we get no support.
There's no one to call. And so we went in
and said, okay, what should we do. What's the right

(02:48):
way to do this? And they walked us through everything
step by step, got everything taken care of for us,
told us this is how it's going to be here's
the installation date. I mean, it was buttersmooth, and it
literally cost us the same as us buying the hardware
off the internet. It was just an amazing experience. It
was great service, and you just don't see that a
lot of times anymore. When you go places. It's starting

(03:08):
to come back. You're starting to see servers who you know,
they've weeded out the people that are just there because
they needed a job. That are really bad servers. You know,
they don't last very long because they don't make any money.
Good servers get tips. Good servers make money. I've had
both in the last week. I had a great server
at Longhorn Steakhouse. And I won't tell you where I
had the bad server because I'm not here to bad
mouth people, but it was pretty bad. When you get

(03:30):
one cup of water for your entire meal and you're
like flagging the waitress like, hey, can I get a
refull of my water? You know I'm asking for like,
you know, extra salt or something. It costs money. You know,
you have some water please, four zero, two, five, five,
eight eleven ten. So last week on the program, we
introduced the concept of core upgrades. This is gonna be
something where you're gonna hear a lot about in the

(03:52):
in twenty twenty five. You know, we are looking at
a PC super cycle this year. There are a lot
of people who are going to replace their PCs for
a variety of reasons in twenty twenty five. I would
say probably twenty twenty five percent of the PC market
is going to roll over in twenty twenty five. Most
of those are going to be business customers, because you know,
businesses tend to use their computers as long as possible.

(04:13):
A lot of them are still running Windows ten, so
you know that dies in October obviously. But a core upgrade,
we're going to talk about that on them. What is
a core upgrade? We're going to tell you more about that,
but we covered that last week. Also, we talked about
the jobs that were safest and most at risk from AI,
So we told you what career paths actually are going

(04:35):
to be. You know, what's the difference between a job
that gets replaced by AI and a job that becomes
way more productive because of AI. Those are the ones
you what's the career path you want right where you're
using AI to make yourself more productive. We have a
fun twist on that concept on the show here coming
up later today as well. We also talked a little
bit about these new screens coming out of Samsung, the
tactile screens where they would raise up off So in essence,

(04:58):
imagine you go to a website and there's a button
on the web page that you need to tap, but
instead of just tapping the flat screen, the button raises
up off the screen and you can actually depress the
button like a physical button, like back in the old day.
And then when it goes to the next page, that
button just morphs back into the screen and goes away,
and you know, the screen becomes something different. That is

(05:19):
actually technology that Samsung featured at CES and it's brilliant.
I mean it is. It is going to revolutionize smartphones.
And it's just another example. Remember when Apple used to
do this when you were excited about the next new
release of the iPhone or something, because there is gonna
be some crazy new feature. Like the most exciting thing
that has happened to iPhone in the last ten years
is they took out the headphone jack. I mean literally, like, who,

(05:41):
we have more room in there for well, we're not
gonna give you a bigger battery because no, it's like
you don't need that. So yeah, I mean it was.
It's really cool to see this new technology. We also,
you know, see some dumb technology at CEES like the
big hype Ooh look at this. It's like a toaster
for your cell phone, but it automatically changes your backup.
Like that's got to be the dumbest thing I've ever

(06:02):
seen in my life. I cannot believe that that's getting
featured as a top five product at ces.

Speaker 4 (06:08):
Ugh.

Speaker 2 (06:09):
So yeah, so we covered it all last week. If
you missed the show, you can pick it up over
at Shrock Innovations dot com. Just go to Radio Show
there and you can check all the archives, the videos,
the the uploads, the YouTube Rumble everything you're there. Also,
if you are following on YouTube Rumble, Spotify, any of
the podcast services, please be sure you like comment share,

(06:29):
you know, ring the notification bell, do all the stupid
things that everybody asks you to do, so that way
we can make sure that you don't miss a show
or a special broadcast. We're gonna be doing more of
those in twenty twenty five as well. Coming up on
the show today, we are going to be talking about
the PC super cycle. Is your computer one of the
computers that needs to be replaced in twenty twenty five?
How would you even know? You know, I always say,

(06:51):
if your computer can no longer do what you need
it to do, that means it's time for you to
get a new computer. It's pretty simple. But what if
the only option was to get a new computer? What
if there was another choice, maybe a less expensive choice.
And that's something that we're very excited to bring you
from Shrock Innovations. We're going to tell you about that
coming up on the program, or of course going to
cover TikTok today. Uh, there was a lot of uh.

(07:13):
You know, TikTok is now illegal in the United States,
as is trading trump coin. Hasn't stopped me from making
seventeen hundred dollars in the last twenty four hours. Not
a joke. Oh that's be wo How can I do that? Well,
it's not illegal for me, you see, because I'm properly prepared.
I am a digital citizen of the Nation of Palau,
which Trump's my United States citizenship for two hundred and

(07:35):
fifty dollars paid through Square and I get an ID
and everything, and it doesn't give me any rights in
the nation of palaw it's a Pacific nation. I can't
even I think I get expedited passport service if I
go fly there. You know, that's maybe a free snorkeling coupon.
That's what I get if I go to Palau. But
it does allow me to when I sign up for
a cryptocurrency trading service or an exchange to say I

(07:56):
am not a citizen of the United States, I'm a
citizen of Palau, and that opens up the world to me,
which is just disgusting that as an American you can't
do things that I can't buy President Trump's meme coin,
which they released Friday night. Why do they release it
Friday night because the middle of the night is when
people outside of the United States are awake and they

(08:18):
can buy the meme coin. It's just ridiculous. So, you know,
properly prepared, what are the things you need to do
to properly prepare to take advantage of these things. Hopefully
you don't have to do so many of them in
the future. Hopefully you won't have to do all these
things to get on TikTok. We're gonna tell you what
to do if you want to get your TikTok back today,
and what you should not do. Holy cow, there are
things out there you should not do. Do not miss

(08:38):
that segment. If you're a TikTok user. There are things
that you're gonna try to do. You're gonna look it
up on the internet. Just do these five simple tricks
to get your TikTok back or step one, install the
nasty ransomware virus step two. I mean literally, it's gonna
be like that. Guys. I'm gonna warn you about that,
so be careful coming up on the program. Also, there's
a new thing, speaking of government, there's a new thing

(09:00):
coming out of the FTC called click to cancel. Have
you heard about this? In essence, what the FTC is
saying is they want it to be as easy to
cancel a subscription as it was to start a subscription.
So click to cancel means if you signed up online
for something, well, you need to be able to cancel
it online the same way without talking to seventeen customer

(09:21):
service representatives and taking a call to the retention department.
Have you ever tried to cancel your Internet or your
cable like that. Literally, it's for cable Internet gym memberships.
Gym membership's pretty pretty you know apropos. Right now, a
lot of people have hit that quitting point. They're like,
I wish I wouldn't have signed up for this. Well,
let me send you to the retention team over here
at SO and So's Jim. You know you won't have

(09:42):
to deal with any of that because of click to cancel.
We're going to tell you what's going on there. Also,
we're going to wrap up the program today with something
that's new. It's a little bit of a twist on AI.
Everybody's freaked out about AI. It's going to take my job. Oh,
it's going to change the world. It's gonna If I
don't learn AI, I won't be competitive with other people
in the MO marketplace. Well, now there's a whole new
thing to worry about. If you're an employer. Bring your

(10:04):
own AI. Have you heard about bringing your own device?
That's when you go to work and they give you
such a terrible computer, you're like, can I just bring
mine from home because it's way better than what you have,
And they're like, I don't care. You do whatever makes
you more productive. Now, imagine that you hire me as
an employee and I come in and I bring my
own AI with me. So if you fire me, the

(10:27):
company loses access to my AI. If you fire me
or if you hire me, I should say, my AI
will be doing half of my work for me. But
because the laws are a little murky, who owns the
work that the AI did? Does the AI company own it?
That makes the AI bot the agent? Do I own

(10:47):
it because I'm paying for the agent? Or does the
company own it because the company's paying me as a
contractor for the work. Seey'aw gets a little murky, or
even an employee for the work. So bring your own AI.
We're going to tell you what's going on there and
how if you really want to take this AI thing
and spin it on its head and stick it to
your employer, this is how you become that valuable employee
that they can't fire for zero two five five eight eleven.

(11:10):
Ten is the number to join us on the program
today eight eight eight two five zero two zero nine one. So,
as I mentioned, Windows ten is going by by October
twenty fifth or October of twenty twenty five. What does
that mean? What does go by by mean Well, I
think we all know what go by by means, but hey,
what does it mean in the context of Windows ten.

(11:30):
What it means is on you know, November first of
twenty twenty five, you're going to walk over and you're
going to push the power button on your Windows ten
computer and it's going to boot up. Just fine, it's
going to turn on, Your programs are going to run.
Everything is going to be fine, except your security service
will no longer update. You're no longer going to get

(11:51):
security patches from Microsoft or any other provider that provides software.
No one's going to continue providing support for Windows ten
because providing support costs mind and you have to if
you're a software developer, you have to support all of
the operating systems that are in existence if you want
to keep those customers. Well, if Microsoft is telling you
we're going to kick everybody off Windows ten and there
aren't going to be any Windows ten users, or there's

(12:13):
going to be a handful of them. As a company
who spends money to create support for the products they make,
you're going to cut support for Windows ten. Why would
you waste the money supporting users who aren't there? So
no more printers for Windows ten, No more scanners for
Windows ten. No more email support from any email provider
for Windows ten, no more internet support. When your internet

(12:35):
goes down, the first thing your provider will says, well,
what version of Windows are you running? You'll say Windows ten. Oh, sorry,
that's unsupported. We can't help you. You're gonna have to
upgrade to Windows eleven and see if that fixes the problem,
which of course it won't. But that's beside the point.
It's just an out. So if you're on Windows ten
in November, lots of doors close in your face. It's
like you're a second class citizen. It's like you're an American.

(12:56):
All the doors is closed in your face. And then
each month that goes by, the viruses, the malware, the
attacks get worse and worse and worse, and no one
makes mitigations, no one makes defenses for it. Why does
it get worse Because at first only the super smart
people are attacking you, and then once they've had their
turn with you and they've had their fun, it's kind
of like when you see something on an infomercial, it's

(13:17):
already too late, Like you know, if there was that
much money to be made, selling collectibles from the Happy
Day's Dad. You know he would be selling collectibles, not
making infomercials about it. Right. If the guy in the
Lamborghini with the dolphin fountain in the circle driveway was
really making millions of dollars trading stocks in his spare time,
you think he'd go full time, right, Like, why would

(13:40):
you decide to make a commercial instead about it and
tell everybody else how to do it so that they
can make money instead of you. It doesn't make any sense.
It's kind of like that. So what's going to happen
after October of twenty twenty five is people are going
to get you know, the smart people are going to
attack you first. Then as they get tired of it,
they're going to to tell the dumb people how to

(14:01):
attack you. They're going to make automated tools to attack you.
Then every script kitty, in other words, some kid out
there doesn't really know what they're doing but is knows
enough to be dangerous, is going to go out and
start attacking you. And then pretty soon it's gonna be
wide open. You're gonna have businesses that fail because their
information security was compromised. They're gonna get sued by their
customers or by class action lawsuits because they failed to

(14:21):
upgrade to Windows eleven even though Microsoft told them it
was not safe to continue using Windows ten. And you
can see how this is going to snowball. So as
a consumer, what do you do with that? Well, we
got to get you off Windows ten. So previous to
this year, the conversation has been your computer is either
compatible or it's not compatible. You either can or you

(14:43):
can't upgrade. There has never been a you can't upgrade
unless we do this and then you can upgrade. And
what we have figured out at Shock over the holiday
season was by doing core upgrades on holiday specials. Specifically,
Kyle asked me to open it up to a wider
range to all modular computers. We did that and the
results were pretty shocking. We had a few customers come

(15:04):
in with computers that were so old that their hard
drive technology was not compatible with the new motherboards. Do
you know how old those computers. That's like a fifteen
year old desktop. And I'm not talking about a holiday special.
I'm talking about a fifteen year old straight up desktop.
So some of you out there are using really old computers.
One of the things you're going to realize when you
buy a new machine is that they don't last like

(15:24):
that anymore. You get eighteen months out of them now
before they blow up in your face. They don't make
desktops anymore like what you've experienced in the past, not
like we make them. At SHOCK. You get a box
with air in it and a motherboard from a laptop inside.
It's sometimes powered, especially with HP, it's powered by a
laptop power cord. You know, when you come to SHOCK,

(15:45):
you're getting systems that are unique and special, And I
don't talk about that on the program as much because
it's not like a it's not a salesy point. It's
not like a, hey, we have a special going or
you know, when I talk about our products and services,
it's usually in the context of a special or a
sale or an offer or something like that. I very
rarely just remind you that every single desktop that you
buy from Shock is hand built in our Papillion service

(16:07):
center by the same people that are going to support
you on that computer. When you have trouble, you don't
get okay, your car breaks down, do you get to
go talk to the guy that works on the assembly
line that builds the Fords. No, you get some guy
that's job is to fix the forwards that somebody else built. Well,

(16:28):
in this case, you're getting the people who are actually
building the computers. Ongoing warranty and support. So, in other words,
fifteen years later, you can bring that same computer back
into us and we understand why that hard drive doesn't
work with the new motherboard, and we know how to
fix it. We know how to change it, we know
how to clone it to a different type of technology,

(16:48):
stick it in the computer, tell the computer how to
boot from it and make it work. So that ongoing
support and then our warranty coverage where if you don't
use your warranty, you get your money back and you
can buy another warranty and you can keep the computer
under warranty for like no cost, for as long as
you have the computer, until you have a problem, and
then you're really glad you have the warranty. That reduces

(17:09):
the cost of ownership on Shock computer. Something again people
don't think about when you go to buy a dollar
in HP, what's your cost of ownership? What's going to
cost you to operate this computer over eighteen months? It's
a lot lower with Shock And the last thing here
is this is going to sound so corny. We value
you and we show you that with the actions that

(17:33):
we take, because actions speak louder than anything I can
do on this microphone. So when you bring your fifteen
year old computer into us and we can sell you
an eighteen hundred dollars holiday special, and you're ready to
buy it, you're ready to do it. But then my
guys look at you and say, you know, for eight
hundred and fifty dollars, we can upgrade your computer to
the same speed as the holiday special. Would you rather
me save you a thousand dollars and do that? Yes, sir,

(17:56):
thank you, sir. Okay, But why would a company do that?
Why would a company turn around and save, you know,
basically for go one thousand dollars in revenue. It's simple
and it's the thing that's kept us around for twenty
seven years. Now, we play the long game. We want

(18:19):
you as a customer for life. We want you to
know that you can trust us. We want you to
recommend us to your children. We want your children. We
have been around long enough now that your children are
recommending us to their children. I'm so thankful in the
beginning that we played the long game, because if we
would have done what every other computer repair company does,
we might not be here today. And I have you,

(18:40):
guys to thank for that, for trusting us to do
that for you, and we're going to continue doing that
going forward. So when you buy a short computer, it's
not just a computer. It's way more than that. And
it's super corny, I know, because you just want a computer.
You don't want all the fluffy stuff. I don't really
care that you love me. I just just want a
computer for zero two five five, eight eleven ten eight
eight eight two five zero two zero nine one A

(19:02):
little bit late. Gonna take our break here, guys, when
we come back. There are so many TikTok stories flying
around in it right now. It's hard to know what's
real what's not real. But more importantly, we're seeing scammers
taking advantage of the confusion. And I want to give
you I know that there's so many of you listening
right now that are on TikTok. Tons of you right
there's a few, trust me, you just you don't talk
to each other about it, but you're there. It's kind

(19:22):
of like when you were a closet Trump supporter in
twenty sixteen. You know you didn't talk about it, but
you know you voted.

Speaker 4 (19:28):
You might.

Speaker 2 (19:28):
You might open up that TikTok app and doom scroll
for a while on Thursday night when you're bored. We're
going to tell you how to not get scammed around
the TikTok band coming up next on compute this.

Speaker 5 (19:38):
Computer problems usually don't just suddenly happen. Most failures usually
start out as small issues with few or no symptoms.
Over time, they grow into error messages, blue screens, and
other problems that can be costly to fix. Rock innovations

to eight hours of tests, checks, automated repairs and optimizations
that keep your computer at peak efficiency while identifying potential
issues while you still have options about how to handle them.

Speaker 5 (20:56):
Have you noticed that almost every piece of technology seems
to do it's to be disposable. Every day people talk
their phones, tablets, and other electronic devices because they can't
be repaired. Manufacturers have engineered their products to fail on
a schedule so they can extract more money out of
your family budget automatically every year or so. But what

(21:16):
if it didn't have to be that way. What if
you could get the performance of today's fastest computers with
the expansion and upgrade options you used to enjoy. You
just described Shrocks modular desktop computers. Having the right tool
for the job is important, and Shock's modular desktop pieces
packed the performance and flexibility to handle your computing needs,

(21:37):
from just checking the email to running a complex business.
Modular desktops are engineered to be easily repaired with widely
available industry standard parts. Every component is selected intentionally to
give you years of upgrade and repair options. It is
not uncommon for a short customer to be using the
same computer for a decade after they bought it. Modular

(21:57):
pieces are the most popular custom computer in the Midwest
or Reason. When you are ready for your next computer,
stop in to check out the modular lifestyle or shop
online at Truckinnovations dot com.

Speaker 2 (22:15):
What is the other country that can attack Greenland on
a risk board? You can attack Greenland from Iceland or
from I want to say, Scandinavia, maybe Canada. Well, no,
you can't attack it from Canada. I'm not on a
risk board. You're talking to the wrong guy. I haven't
played at risk Scandinavia. You can attack it from I
don't know. This is what we talk about during the

(22:35):
commercial breaks. Guys, I told you it was interesting stuff.
Facebook dot com slash Shock Innovations welcome everybody there, Gary writes,
hi hashtag bubble strong, so stay tuned to the aftershock.
If you want to know what bubble strong means. We're
gonna tell you about bubbles during the Aftershock today, but
I can't do that during the broadcast show. I got
to save it for the Aftershock, which is a little
show that we do after this program. Give me a

(22:56):
few minutes to reset and then we'll jump in and
do that. Four zero two five, five eleven ten eight
eight eight two five zero two zero nine one. There
were so there have been so many stories about TikTok,
and then we just heard at the top of the
hour in the new segment, you know, TikTok is dark,
TikTok is gone, like they've removed it from all the
app stores. Well, they didn't remove it from your phone.

(23:18):
They didn't force uninstalled. It wasn't like a security threat,
so it's still on your phones. If you load TikTok,
it says sorry, TikTok's not available right now because it
is illegal for TikTok as of this morning to operate
in the United States of America. So TikTok is not
going to operate in the United States of America. How

(23:38):
do you solve this problem, Well, you solve this problem
the same way that I solved my trump coin problem. So, yes,
I'm a You don't have to be a digital citizen
of Plow, by the way, but you can be if
you look that up. It's like two hundred and fifty bucks,
and you can get a five year license or you
get a five year digital residency. But she offers you, literally,
they tell you it afford you no rights as a
citizen of Plow. Aside from you you can get addresses

(24:00):
and stuff too. You can get a bank account and
Pillow now you can get all kinds of It's crazy,
but I digress. You don't have to do that. To
get your TikTok back. All you need to do is
fire up a VPN and connect to some other connect
through some other country that's not the United States. Connect
through Canada, connect through Mexico, connect through Hong Kong. So
when I'm buying my trump coin, I'm a digital citizen

(24:22):
of Plow. I'm using a VPN that says I'm in
Hong Kong and waila because you know, if I try
to connect without the VPN on the exchange pops up
with all these warnings, withdraw your funds now or they
will be seized. You know, blah blah blah. United States
people can't do this. Well, I just told you if
you fired up a VPN and said you were from

(24:42):
Hong Kong, you can get on TikTok. So some of
you out there are like, ohor that's great, how do
I get a VPN? And so you can see how
for normal people this rabbit hole starts to form where
it's like a followy. You got to do this, and
you got to do that, and that allows you to
do this. And it's technical, you know, it's not really,
it's not super conceptually, it's easy to understand. So you

(25:05):
connect to the internet from your home. Let's just say
it's from Cox or Centrylink or Comcast or wherever you're
connecting from. You connect from home, and instead of your
request going directly from your house to in this case,
TikTok and back, your request goes from your house to
Hong Kong to a server that's set up in Hong
Kong simply to accept your request and then pass it

(25:27):
on like the telephone game, so that the computer in
Hong Kong gets your request and sends it on to TikTok.
TikTok says, is this user in the United States answer, no,
their IP addresses coming from Hong Kong. Okay, great, send
them back the content they want and then that content
comes back to your device from Hong Kong. Your Internet
service provider has no idea you're even using TikTok. They

(25:49):
just know that you do a lot of talking to
somebody in Hong Kong. That's all we know. And they
know it's a VPN server, and so they know that
you're masking what you're doing. But this whole idea of
you only need privacy if you're doing something wrong, this
is a perfect example. And I guess technically, yeah, you're
violating the law, you evil American. How dare you want

(26:11):
to use TikTok, who in the marketplace has proven to
have a superior service over Facebook or x or anybody else.
That's why they They basically wrote the book on video
social media. Instagram tried to copy it after Zuckerberg bought them.

(26:33):
It was just Instagram was social media for pictures, TikTok
was social media for video. Do you see you know?
It was just a slight change, a slight tweak. So
now what's going to happen next? This is for those
of you who who are worried about TikTok's influence, please
don't misunderstand what I'm saying here. There is a threat
post potentially a potential threat to the United States to

(26:58):
very It's hard to say because it's not like a
threat like a terrorist that there's not a guy with
a truck in a bomb. Okay, he's not going to
blow up a market or something. This is a potential
threat that could influence an election, or could influence a
local a local political discussion, or could be a communication
vector for terrorists, or could help mold public opinion to

(27:19):
be more sympathetic toward Russia in its war with Ukraine.
You know, there's all kinds of uses for social media.
If you control the algorithm, you can almost control what
people here. And if you can control what people here,
you can control what they believe. That's what the Biden
administration tried to do when they censored social media during
the pandemic, and you have to admit, for the most
part it worked like you became a pariah. If you

(27:42):
didn't get vaccinated, you became a pariah. That's why the
aftershock to this day is not posted to YouTube. We
said stuff that was true, and we posted to YouTube.
We still get a strike still to this day. So
I mean it works, right, So the United States government
knows that it works to control social media if Chinese
communists or if communists Chin and it controls TikTok, they
know that controlling TikTok is going to allow them to

(28:05):
control what Americans believe to some extent. So there is
a risk here. There is a potential threat here. Potential
So with that said, don't misunderstand what I'm saying here.
They want TikTok to be sold to a US investor
to come back online, so to remove the control from
communist China. Kevin o'larry has offered twenty billion dollars in cash.

(28:30):
Like he's going to write a check for twenty billion.
It's not like Elon. He's not gonna leverage his Tesla
stock or something. No, he's gonna he's gonna just write
the check for twenty billion in cash. Twenty bees. What's
twenty bee before friends? You know whatever, go buy your
Trump coin thor I got twenty billion dollars. I don't care,
you know. So, yeah, he's offered twenty billion for it.
I don't know that there's gonna be any takers. But

(28:50):
you know President Trump wants to to say, when I
get into office on Monday, you know Manyana, I'll be there,
and maybe we can come up with a ninety day
extension to get TikTok back on everything else. There is
no legislative reason for a ninety day extension to happen,
like there's no the president can't override a law with
an executive order, so there have to be another law.

(29:12):
So maybe this gets, you know, put into that one
big beautiful bill that they keep talking about passing. You know,
this is how the sausage gets made. You want your
TikTok back? Vote for the tax cuts for zero two five, five,
eight eleven tens the number to join us on the
program eight eight eight if you're outside the metro area
eight eight eight two five zero two zero nine to one.
So I do not think that TikTok is going to

(29:34):
magically come back on tomorrow morning or tomorrow afternoon after
Trump is inaugurated. I do not think it's going to
be something that is short lived. It's it's gonna last
like this for at least a few weeks. But in
the meantime, if you want to continue interacting with TikTok content,
just get a VPN. That's all you have to do
and you're back up and running. Also, super shoutout as

(29:55):
we go to break here, super shout out to the
Papillion team. In fact, it was kind of funny. This
was on my show agenda. I wanted to make sure
that I remembered to give them a shout out because
the Papillions I mentioned building computers. How your computers are
handbuilt by the people that are going to support them
in the company. The Papillion Service Center is our warehouse
service center. It is the smallest service center, which makes

(30:16):
complete sense, and they build every single laptop and desktop
that is sold from our product line. If you get
a custom build, if you have the guys build you
something special in the shop, the parts come to the
shop and the guy that sold it to you builds
it because he knows what you want. But if you're
buying one of our endeavors our ventures are boundlesses one
of our pre built computers off the shelf and maybe

(30:38):
having it modified from the shelf. The guys in the
Gals and the Papillion Service Center are the ones that
handbuild those computers for you, and we keep track of
build rates. During December, we were having a serious difficulty
keeping up. We were selling so many computers. It was
hard because when you're hand building them one at a time,
one by one by one. You know, you can build
what I can build, maybe physically build three desktops in

(31:02):
an hour, depending on what they are their boundlesses, they're
a little easier to build. At the ventures they're a
little harder, So three four desktops an hour, you know,
if you're new at it, maybe only one or two
an hour, you know, so just some variability there. The
crew in Papillion has increased the build rate coming out
of that service center by more than fifty percent in
the last month. That is an epic increase in productivity.

(31:28):
And that's Liam, that's Colin, that's Corey, that's the that's Noah,
that's all the guys in the Marissa two. She doesn't
really build many computers, but she keeps everything else off
the guy's back so they can build the computers. And
that's the Papillion team doing a great job. In fact,
this morning they just got a shout out here on
Facebook at Facebook dot com, slash Schrock Innovations. Let me

(31:48):
scroll down and find that one. Jim said, good morning.
I wanted to give a big shout out to your
Papillion team. Noah, Liam Marissa provided excellent service over the
past couple of months. Shrock Innovations is a superb profession resource. Well,
thank you, Jim, I appreciate it. I couldn't agree with
you more that the team of Pavilion so much so
I had it in the agenda for the show today
is just doing an amazing job at what they do

(32:10):
four zero two five, five, eight eleven ten. I'm late
on the break again, constantly late today, but when we
come back, there's so many good things to talk about.
When we come back, we're going to talk about click
to cancel. What is this click to cancel from the
FTC is it is? It kind of like getting rid
of junk fees. Like those junk fees, Eh, what's making
the economy so informationary? Yeah, they are, but click to

(32:31):
cancel is an interesting concept. It should be as easy
to cancel a subscription as it is to start the subscription.
So we're going to tell you what this means for
you and what you're going to be able to do
with it coming up next on Compute This.

Speaker 5 (32:43):
Shock Innovations solid state laptops are engineered locally for speed
and reliability you just can't get from the major national brands.
Each of our laptops starts off with an a Zeus chassis.
We remove the stock drives and memory and upgrade them
with higher performing components. This then lucks the full potential
of the laptop, making the unit up to twenty five

(33:03):
percent faster. This is why Shock solid state laptops last
so much longer than the competition. If your laptop starts
out twenty five percent faster, that means over time, it
doesn't slow down nearly as fast.

Speaker 6 (33:16):
If you can dream it, Shock Interactives website developers can
make it happen. Refresh your website, automate sales and marketing,
and grow your business today with Shock Interactive.

Speaker 5 (33:27):
When your computer has a warranty and you have a problem,
don't call the manufacturers for help, call Shrock Innovations. Shock
will contact HP, Dell, a Zeus, Samsung, or any other
manufacturer to arrange a warranty repair at no cost to you.
We know how these companies work. We know the loopholes
and the tricks to get your system repaired under warranty

(33:48):
as quickly as possible. Even so manufacturers can take up
to twenty one days to fix your computer. We'll give
you the option of a fast local repair in one
of our service centers, or provide you the loner laptop
to use while you wait. We can even back up
your data before we ship your computer, just in case.
The warranty fix includes a hard drive white. Shrock tests

(34:09):
your computer when it comes back from repair to ensure
the problem was solved properly and all.

Speaker 1 (34:14):
Of your hardware works like new.

Speaker 5 (34:16):
There's a reason Shrock Innovations has consistently voted the best
in town. Whenever you need help, wherever you need it,
Shrock Innovations makes your computer work for you.

Speaker 2 (34:30):
All righty folks, welcome back into compute.

Speaker 5 (34:32):
This.

Speaker 2 (34:32):
My name's Thor Schrock. I'm the owner of the Shrock
Innovations computer company with four locations to help you out
when your computer's on the fritz or you're looking for
something new. Omaha, Lincoln, Papillion and West of Mooines, Iowa.
Four zero two, five five eight eleven ten is the
number to join us on the program today, and we
got a few callers rolling in here. We're going to
jump onto those phone lines here in just a moment.

(34:53):
But first before we get into that, we've got a
great question from Facebook talking about you know, just get
a VPN and you can use TikTok. We got a
comment here about a from Ron saying in the Windows
eleven settings there is an option for VPN. What does
that option do if I turn it on? Great question,
is that a free VPN built right into Windows eleven.

(35:14):
The answer is yes and no. So yes, built into
Windows eleven, and to a lesser degree, the new Edge browser,
you can enable a VPN. And what this VPN does
is it basically tunnels all of your traffic so that
your internet service provider doesn't know what you're looking at.
But it only tunnels what goes through the browser. Number one.
So number two, if you're if you have secure update

(35:35):
or for example, and you're downloading updates from our servers,
that doesn't go through a browser, So it's not going
to be on your VPN. It's not the entire internet connection,
it's just the browser. Number two. It does not allow
you to change your geographic location, so in other words,
you're still in the United States, So you're just using
a VPN to keep your information a little bit safer.

(35:56):
It can have an erosive speed or an erosion to
your Internet speed. It can slow your Internet down a bit,
so that's why it's off by default. If you are
concerned about privacy, you can increase your privacy to a
degree if you turn it on and you're also using
the Edge browser. But keep in mind when you buy
a VPN or use a free VPN provided to you

(36:16):
by somebody who makes money by tracking your advertising eyeballs
like Microsoft or Google. Whose stuff do you think they're
not blocking? Right? If Microsoft is giving you the free VPN,
Microsoft still knows what you're looking at, so Microsoft can
still target ads to you. If Google gives you a
free VPN, they can still target ads to you because

(36:36):
they know what you're looking at. You're not essentially, you're
not totally private. If you buy a VPN service. It
costs about one hundred bucks a year. You buy a
VPN service, and then all of a sudden, everything that
you do, you know, again, maybe isn't private to the
company that's providing the VPN, but they have no financial
interest in knowing what you're doing. It's not like they're
selling ads forour zero two, five, five, eight, eleven ten. Mike,

(36:58):
Welcome to the program. How can I help you on
compute this today?

Speaker 4 (37:02):
Hey morning, Gail. So this week obviously with all the
talk about TikTok, and listen to a lot of you know,
the news shows out there, the talking kids and one
of them and I can't remember the guy's name, which
I cook. I hate making a quote without given the
proper reference and all. But they were talking about a
person could buy a TikTok, but would TikTok would that
include the sale of the unique algorithm that runs TikTok,

(37:23):
that owns by Mike Dance. And that's something that they're
saying they might not be able to get to just
be getting the name of the business.

Speaker 2 (37:29):
Yep, any users. Yeah, that's so. The algorithm is the
secret sauce. When you when you go to a social
media site, what you see is not just coincidence. That's
how Facebook started, right. You had a group of friends
and if they posted something, it showed up in your feet.
It was really and you if you scrolled long enough
you would see everybody's everything. Then your friend group. Well,
now they've figured out that, you know, maybe you interact

(37:51):
with some friends more than other friends, so maybe those
friends should be more prioritized in your feet. That's kind
of how it started. Then, hey, we've noticed this other
content out here is very closely related to the stuff
your friends post, So maybe you can make some new
friends if we show you their content. So now you're
seeing stuff in your feed that isn't from your friends
all of a sudden. And then the advertising model started. Well,
we notice that you look at car stuff a lot,

(38:12):
so you know, if you're looking for car audio, here
you go, and here's an ad for a car audio,
all of a sudden, out of nowhere, and so then
the social media feed became super jumbled. Well, that algorithm
is the secret sauce that makes the social media company money,
and it drives user engagement because the metric is time
spent on page eyeballs. How long are the eyeballs on
the screens. That's what you're trying to maximize if you

(38:34):
own a social media company. So your algorithm is designed
to provide you with the most interesting clickbaitish content that
you can possibly provide somebody to keep them staring at
the screen longer. So they see more ads. Well, if
you don't get that algorithm from TikTok, what value does
TikTok have?

Speaker 4 (38:53):
And that's what they were talking about. So what I
mean obviously, you know, developing an algorithm. Obviously that's the
whale and the whole project. That's where they're shooting for,
that fine tuned algorithm. What is there is there laws
in place that would keep somebody from trying to replicate
that or not at all? Yeah, why wouldn't somebody said,
worry about buying TikTok. Why wouldn't somebody just say, hey,
we've got top tick here it is.

Speaker 2 (39:15):
Yeah, there you go. But the problem is trying to
replicate it and replicating it are two different things. You
can try to replicate the Google search engine, and you can.
You can create an engine like Duck that is almost
the same, but it's not quite the same because the
algorithm is different. And Google has so much data about you.
They know what you want to see, so they can
even they can even sort the results in your searches

(39:38):
so that you're seeing things that it thinks are more
relevant to you. So that's the same reason why people
would say, why would you want to buy CNN. You know, Elon,
why would you buy MSNBC like their algorithm is well
and truly broke its hurt, because but you can buy it,
and you can.

Speaker 4 (39:56):
Change it, can and and you know he would just
do it out of spider everybody. I think that's where
we're at right now in the world. But all right, well,
I just kind of curious about that. I've heard them
talking about that because obviously byte Dance obviously would not
be selling the whole company. They'd just be selling off
their portion of the of the US content feed. But yet,
would that get that developer since you're not buying the
whole thing, would that get them the full rhythm of
the algorithm, which is I guess the question they were

(40:17):
talking about on earlier this week, and that'd be something
to be debated in the buyout.

Speaker 2 (40:20):
I guess, Oh yeah, they would totally thank you, Thank you, Mike.
They totally would not get the algorithm. And on top
of that, anyone who thinks this is going to be
a super sexy, clean break from China, think again, because
the most likely outcome from this is that byte Dance
will license TikTok to an American company to run it.
So China is still going to get the money. So

(40:42):
if you're thinking that this is a money thing, it's
not a money thing. This is all everything about, this
entire discussion is about controlling what Americans see. And the
US government can't influence TikTok. They can't tell TikTok what
to not show us people. So if I want to
be I don't know, super conspiracy theory this, well, they
want it owned by an American so that they can

(41:03):
penalize the American and control it four zero, two, five, five,
eight eleven ten do They're not going to say that,
of course, but you know, they admittedly can't control China.
All right, So what is this click to cancel thing
from the FTC. So we've all had subscriptions that you
start for one reason or another, whether it's Netflix or
the recent one for me is the Omaha World Herald. Yeah,

(41:24):
try to cancel a World Held subscription. You can start
the subscription super easily. You just go to their website,
you sign up, you put in your card number, and
but ah boom, you are a subscriber to the World Held,
all the digital nirvana that you can possibly get. But
then let's say, for example, you're not doing a daily
fill in show on the radio anymore, and you're probably
not going to do it for a while. So you're like,
you know, maybe i'll cancel this, and you call the

(41:47):
number to cancel it, and then they transfer you to
the retention department and you talk to somebody in India
and they tell you, you know, sir, if you just
keep the service, we'll tell you what you've already paid.
You already paid thirty three dollars for the next quarter.
Why don't we give you the whole next year for
thirty three dollars? Would you keep the service if we
didn't have to refund your thirty three dollars? And I'm thinking, well,
you know, the Husker season's coming up. There'll be a

(42:08):
lot of stuff right about, you know, college football in there,
so you know, maybe i'll look at it once in
a while. There'll be a story. I hate that when
you click on a story and you hit the paywall.
You know it's annoying. So sure, for thirty three bucks
for a year, I suppose if I read five stories
in a year, it's a value. Right. Well, now my
year is up and they just renewed me again for
thirty three bucks, and I'm like, now I have to

(42:29):
call again. They're gonna put me to the retention department.
And why do I have to do that when it
was super EA, why can't I just go online and
cancel it? You literally, if you go online and log
in and click cancel your subscription, it says call the
eight hunder number. Well, now that's gonna be illegal. So
the FTC has come out and said it should be
as easy to cancel a subscription as it was to
create the subscription. Now, this doesn't go into effect until

(42:51):
May fifteenth, so don't go there trying to cancel your
subscriptions today. It's still gonna be the same game, same game,
different day until roughly May fifteenth. And this is going
to impact like gyms, streaming services, cable companies, newspapers, all
that kind of stuff. The most popular subscriptions actually at Shrock.
When people buy a new computer, they sign up for Sofos,

(43:12):
which is the antivirus software. They'll sign up for Secure Update,
which is our patch management service that we make. The
Shock Desk is a big one. For thirty five bucks
a month, you get unlimited technical support. That means that
you know, whatever your question is about It could be
related to the computer, It could be completely unrelated to
what you bought from us. It could be just why
can't I get on TikTok thor it's thirty five dollars

(43:33):
for you know, general support for your technology. That's kind
of cool. And of course warranties are not really subscriptions,
but they kind of are. So you buy the warranting
and if you don't use it, you get your money back,
and if you get your money back, you can choose
to buy another warranty. So the thing that struck me
about these these are all really really hard to sign
up for, and I thought, maybe maybe we're doing this wrong.

(43:53):
Maybe we have this backwards, because like, if you want sofos,
you can go sign up on our web. You can
go buy it online, but then we have to do
a shock desk to log into your computer and install
it for you. So that's bad, right, that takes a
long time. Secure Updata you can go online, you can
get it. It's super easy to subscribe to Secure up Data,
So that's probably the outlier here. You don't even have
to give us a credit card to subscribe to Secure
Updator at secure updata dot Com just to try it

(44:16):
out Shock Desk. To sign up for the Shock Desk,
you have to buy a computer from us in most cases,
and then you have to sign a piece of paper
in the service center with a pen that says yes,
I want this, and if I don't want this, this
is the data need to cancel by Then we make
a copy of that sheet, we give it to you,
say here, make sure you call us this day. If
it doesn't, we set a reminder to give you. If

(44:36):
you say I'm just gonna want to cancel it, then
we even set like an Outlook calendar reminder to call
you to make sure we cancel your subscription and don't
charge you. And you know warranties. We call you all
the time saying we might owe you money call us back.
People think it's a scam until we give them their
money back and then they're like, Wow, that was cool.
So I don't know if that means we need to
make our subscriptions easier to sign up for, or if
that means that when this law goes into effect on

(44:57):
May fifteenth, we don't have to change anything, because if
we make it really hard for you to sign up
for stuff, we can make it really hard for you
to cancel stuff. It will be completely legal. Isn't that amazing? No,
it's not. We We don't make life. Trust me, guys.
If you accidentally renew a subscription and you call us
a month later and say I didn't mean to renew that,
we just give you your money back. It's about the

(45:18):
customer service for zero two five, five, eight eleven ten,
eight eight eight outside the metro area eight eight eight
two five zero two zero nine to one. You're gonna
take our final break of our final brek our final breck.
I'm kind of hungry. We're gonna take our final breakfast
of the show, and then we're gonna take Jeff's call.
Coming up next on Compute this, Save Me Jeff.

Speaker 5 (45:37):
Everyone has experienced some form of data loss or know
someone who has. It's unfortunate, but sometimes the technology we
rely on simply fails. And the last question you want
to hear at that time is you have a backup
Right When you're a hard drive, memory card, backup drive,
or flash drive fails, you turn to the data recovery
experts at Shruck Innovations to get those pictures, songs, and

(46:00):
memories back you know, not all data recovery companies are
the same. Having the right tools and knowledge to get
the job done right on the first attempt makes all
the difference between a successful recovery and the permanent loss
of your important data. Sometimes you only get one shot
at a successful recovery. That's why Shrock has invested in
top of the line recovery imagers, a Class one hundred

(46:22):
clean environment, over ten thousand dollar components, and a staff

needs to cool off, take it to Shrock and let
your local laptop repair experts get it back in top
shape again.

Speaker 2 (48:00):
All right, guys, welcome back, final segment of Compute. This
stay tuned after the show though, on to Facebook dot
com slash Shrock Innovations. We will have the after shock
where we've got some interesting stuff to talk about here.
Of course, this is the final broadcast day before Inauguration day,
so we are on the air for that. That's cool.
So we've got to talk about that. How they're moving
it inside? Why are they moving it inside? Kind of

(48:21):
interesting conspiracy theory questions there. Then we're gonna tell you
about trump Coin because I got to talk about that.
I was just checking my trump Coin. I'm still up,
so that's good. And the other thing that we're going
to talk about. I did a fill in on the
radio station here in Omaha on Friday, covering a shift
for Emery Songer, and well, we told a story about

(48:42):
Bubbles the alpaca, and so I'm gonna give you behind
the scenes dirt on the Bubbles of the Alpaca story.
So if you heard that bit during the broadcast day
on Friday, you'll know what I'm talking about. If you
didn't and you're like, who the hell is bubbles, stay
tuned for the aftershock. We'll explain it all for you
there for zero two, five, five, eight eleven, and Jeff,
welcome to the program. Thanks for hanging on the line.
How can I help you on compute this today?

Speaker 3 (49:05):
Well, I've got a activate Windows message on the lower
right hand corner of my screen, okay. And when I
go to the settings to you know, activate it whatever,
it says that activation state Windows is not active. Windows
reports no product key is found on your device and

(49:25):
gives the.

Speaker 2 (49:25):
Error code, gotcha, And you got this one from us.
This is a holiday special, right.

Speaker 3 (49:30):
Right, twenty twenty three holiday is special.

Speaker 2 (49:32):
Okay. So essentially what the product key is is on
the top of your computer, on the toward the back,
there is a shiny sticker and it has a code
on the sticker. That code and this is a desktop
correct or is it a laptop.

Speaker 4 (49:46):
Atop?

Speaker 2 (49:46):
Okay? Gotcha? So yeah, there's a code that laptops don't
have codes. But I'll enter that code and activate your
Windows before it leaves the service center. There have been
some instances where Microsoft has lost the activation and if
that happens, if it becomes corrupt or something like that,
it will ask for the key again. It'll ask you
to reactivate it. The key is a twenty five digit
alpha numeric value, I mean broken up into five blocks

(50:09):
of five. So the easiest thing to do, what I
have found, is to take your cell phone and just
take a picture of the key and then you can
sit comfortably in your chair and look between the screens
and just type the key into your computer. But we
can also help you do this over the Shock desk.
If you can get to the point where you can
read that key, we can get connected on the Shock
desk and we can type it in for you and activate.
You've already been into the menus deep enough to see

(50:31):
that there's no key where. There's a button right there
that says change product key, and you click on that
and then you just type in the same key that's
on your computer from before and it'll reactivate just like that.

Speaker 3 (50:43):
All right, yep.

Speaker 2 (50:44):
So if you have trouble with it, Jeff, give us
a call. Even if you're not under warranty. This is
something that we would totally help you with at no costs.
So just give us a call and we'll make sure
you get reactivated.

Speaker 4 (50:53):
Goods.

Speaker 2 (50:54):
All right, Hey, thanks for the call, Jeff. We appreciate
you joining us on the show today. Alrighty. So, one
of the things that's interesting about AI is it's going
to make everybody way more productive, right And we've talked
about this in the past that some jobs are genuinely
at risk, some jobs are totally not at risk, and
there are some new jobs that are going to be created.
We talked about this on Friday. New jobs are going
to be created that you haven't even thought of yet,

(51:15):
and so you really want to position yourself for those jobs, right. Well,
what it comes down to is the same thing that's
always come down to from the employer employee relationship. If
your employer is paying you money for productivity, if you
provide a higher level of productivity to your employer, you're
worth more money. So the employer will recognize that. A
good employer will recognize that and say, well, you're worth

(51:37):
a little bit more money. Maybe we don't have it
in the budget this year, maybe you have to wait
a few months, you know whatever, we'll figure it out.
But what employees are figuring out now is employers don't
know how to use AI agents. And as a result,
if I'm an employee and I can come into your
business and I can see that you want me to
do some stupid automated, redundant task that I have to
do over and over and over and it's mind numbingly boring,

(52:00):
I might have an AI agent built at my own
expense to do that task for me. So now when
I come to work. I set the agent's doing the boring,
repetitive task. You're getting the productivity as an employer that
you wanted. But now I'm available to do other work,
and so you get double work from me. Well, you're
probably not going to give me double pay, but maybe
time and a half, you know, So I am suddenly

(52:22):
more valuable than the average employee. Now question here is
when if you bring your own AI to work and
you get fired, the AI goes with you. So who
owns all the work the AI did? This is a
really interesting dilemma. It's not settled under law yet. Sometimes
people say the AI company owns it. Open AI might
own it. You might own it because you bought the AI,

(52:43):
or your employer might own it because they paid you
to do the work. No one's really figured it out yet.
But what I can guarantee you is is if you
walk into a business, especially a local business, and you're
able to do one and a half times the amount
of work of the standard human being for the same
amount of time, you are worth more. So learn how
to use AI and be worth more. All right, we're

(53:04):
gonna draw a winner for the twenty five dollars shock
Innovations gift certificate. Kevin, I did not get your call
on the air. We do have you on the line there.
I will take your call here off the air, though,
just to make sure if you have any questions we
get them answered. You're in the drawing though. Today's winner
is Mike. Congratulations Mike, first caller of the show is
the winner. You're gonna get yourself a twenty five dollars
Shock gift card. Amy will get a hold of you

(53:24):
on Monday to get that into your Shock account. Stay
tuned for the Aftershock coming up at Facebook dot com
slash Shock Innovations, and have fun watching the inauguration tomorrow.
I hope everybody enjoys it, and we will see you
all again here next weekend for another exciting edition of
