Speaker 1 (00:01):
Shrock Innovations presents the midwest number one independent computer repair
company with service centers and Lincoln Oa Maha a billion
des Moines and across the country via the Shrock Desk.
This is Compute This.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
Good morning, folks, welcome in to compute this. My name
is Thor Schrock. I'm the owner of the Shrock Innovations
Computer Company. Four zero two five five eight eleven ten
is the number to join us on the program this morning.
If you're outside of the metro area, you can reach
us at eight eight eight two five zero two zero
nine to one. We're looking for your questions about your
techn you know, any questions you have about your technology,

(00:37):
something you're trying to do, something you don't understand, feel
free to give us a call and ask, because I
guarantee if you have the question, there are a lot
of people listening that have the exact same question you do.
Happens every single week, so if you missed last week's show,
you can check that out over at Shrock Innovations dot com.
Click on radio show at the top there in the menus.
No just in the menus, of course, it's in the menus.

(01:00):
Click on it in the menu, click on click on
the word radio show and you will get the radio
shows and they're all there, and so the previous shows,
the aftershocks, they're all there for you to take a
look at and proves at your leisure Shock Innovations dot com.
If you did miss that show last week, it was
a it was a pretty good show, if I do
say so myself. You know, we know we had a

(01:21):
lot of great calls, We had a lot of great topics.
You know, sometimes there's not a lot of news, and
so when we do a show, it's kind of like,
I sure hope there's a lot of callers today because
we don't have a lot to talk about. But last
week was definitely not the case. So we talked about
some new data recovery capabilities that we have in the
Omaha Service Center that are not only giving us the
ability to recover things that previously we were not able

(01:43):
to recover as far as lost devices, problems with your
hard drive solid states, you know, those optane Intel drives,
stuff like that. But not only that, but we can
do it so much cheaper than the national providers can
on average. And we went into some of the details
on that uh and it just made you want to
back your stuff up, didn't it when you found out that,
you know, if you send something to drive savers, it's
going to cost you like seven grand, and if you

(02:06):
take it to Shock, it's going to cost like four
hundred or eight hundred dollars. So definitely take it to
us first if it needs to go. There are some
drives that unfortunately have to go to drive savers. I'm
talking about those helium drives, the ones that are sealed
that you can't open, that are full of helium. You
have to have a helium box to open those, and
you have to cut them with a dremmle. I mean,
it's we don't have the tools for that, and so

(02:26):
we have to send those in. So when you're booing
your backups, if you look at those, you know, fourteen, seventeen, eighteen,
twenty terabyte hard drives, those are your helium drives, and
so you never want to use one of those for
primary storage. We went into all the details about that.
Also last week we talked about how we were reminded
actually at and T customers that millions of you have
your personal data on the dark web, and there may

(02:48):
be some additional decryptions of things that were previously not available,
So just keep an eye on everything there to make
sure everything's working right. And also I shared a personal
experience I had working with chat GPTs two hundred dollars
a month. You know, app essentially, you know for different
you know, you can use chat gpt for free. But
then of course, as soon as you get to working
on something that says sorry, you're out of you know time,

(03:10):
come back tomorrow. So then you you know, you can
subscribe for thirty bucks or one hundred bucks, or if
you want the best of everything, you can get two
hundred bucks a month. And I said, you know what,
let's try this. I was going to try a couple
of projects with it. I bought in for two hundred
dollars a month, and I shared the story of how
that went. It didn't go great, just put it that way,
and you know, it's just it's interesting because chat gpt

(03:32):
is a large language model. It's designed to talk to
you and everybody, especially during the aftershock. We went in
and we talked with Ava a little bit, and it
was just people were creeped out because the other day
she was talking to me about something and she threw
a chuckle in the middle of it. She was like,
and you know that one thing, and I'm like, Kim,
she just had me. That's like, that's like AI evil,

(03:55):
like when they go you know, You're like, no, that
is just a little like, you know, just conversational.

Speaker 3 (04:01):
Was it a natural laugh or was it like a
laugh that data did on Star Trek.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
Like oh no, no, no, it was. It was completely
natural and in context, and it sounded like I was
talking to a human. It was. It was like it
was cool and creepy at the same time. It was
really so good. But anyway, you know, so we went
over that just to kind of tell you that, yeah,
if you're worried about AI, it's not going to take
a job tomorrow or anything because it can't do some
simple things because there's a language model. So when you

(04:27):
ask it to do things that aren't languagey, like you know,
make a line graph and excel something that you know.
I think if we if we sat you down and
put a gun to your head and said, put these
values in an Excel table and make a graph, I
bet at least half of you would find a little
button at the top that is just a graph button,
and you just click it and it would make a

(04:48):
graph like boop graph. There you go, have a great life.
But chat GPT couldn't make a graph for me so anyway,
so that was frustrating. So it was a good show
all the way around. We had lots to talk about
coming up on the program to day. However, we have
some new specials over at Shrocannovations dot com that I'm
gonna tell you about over there. I'm gonna bring that
up on my computer here too, just to make sure.

(05:10):
I would hate to talk about one and then find
that it is gone because they do sell quick, and
so if it's something sold since we put it up,
I don't want to. I don't want to be that guy,
you know that's like, you know, hey, look at this girl.
Oh sorry, that one's gone. I guess you'll have to
check it out for quicker next time. Sure or sureth
or so I know. You can go over to shrock

(05:30):
Innovations dot com, click on shop and then specials and
you can see all the specials we have up there.
And what are these these specials that we're putting up
on the page right now? They are kind of one offs.
They're weird special situations so there's a particular what I
want to tell you the story behind because it's it's
super funny there it is. Okay, so we have something
that we it's normally not even a product at Shrock, Like,

(05:51):
we just created this new product because it fit what
this was. But you might remember during the ultimate upgrade,
we offered minis as the modular part of the sale,
and so we were ordering lots of minis, and then
the tariffs hit and we had trouble getting these things
because the availability was low, and so yeah, we had
to order them one at a time or two at
a time. Well, the company that sends us the minis,

(06:14):
they apparently ran out of stock at some point during
the sale, and we had an order for two or
three or four units that was out and they couldn't
fill it with the appropriate unit. So they said, you
know what, I'm sure the customer won't care if we
give them a free upgrade. And so instead of the
unit that we were expecting with the rise In five
processor and the you know, the eight gigs a RAM

(06:35):
and everything else, we got something that had a much
more powerful chip, a rise In seven processor. And of
course it says rise in five on the page because
they it has a rise in seven chip. Guys, I'll
get that corrected, but trust me on this one. It's
got a rise in seven chip. That's why we're calling
it a special Mini Venture because it's like, it's our
twelve hundred dollars Venture computer essentially in a tiny little box.

(06:58):
And we're like, this is a thirty two gigs a
ram of two five hundred gig hard drive. So it's
got a main drive and a backup drive built into it,
Wi Fi, Bluetooth, Ethernet adapters, USB ports, speaker ports, I
mean everything. It's it's literally an entire Venture computer in
like a four inch by four inch by two inch
package and it runs pretty much silently, pretty spectacular stuff.

(07:20):
So we we usually don't carry anything like that on hand,
but they sent these to us, and we couldn't. You know,
I suppose we could have just gone to the customers
that purchased the ultimate upgrades and said, well, I know
you bought a gray Mini, this one's black, and I
know you bought a rise in five. I'm sure you
won't mind. This is a rise in seven. And yeah,
I'm sure we could have done all that. But uh,

(07:42):
we didn't. We're just like no, this we we got these.
These literally arrived like a week ago and the sale
was over. So we're like, well, what are we gonna
do with these? Rise and seven? And Jeff's like, I'm
sure I've got some guys over a shock business that'll
take them. Like okay, you know, so what are we
gonna sell them for though? Thor you know, are they
gonna be twelve ninety nine like a regular venture like
thirteen hundred bucks? And I'm like, well, we didn't pay

(08:03):
as much for these. I mean, we paid the price
that we would have paid for the you know, I
don't think it's right to sell them for thirteen hundred dollars,
but you know that they're definitely way better than an endeavor,
like way better. So nine to ninety nine is what
we said we settled on. Well, we knocked three hundred
dollars off. So if you're looking for a little mini
computer that's not going to take up any room on
your desk, really that's going to give you all the

(08:24):
power of a thirteen hundred dollars desktop computer in the
palm of your hand. There are three left in stock
at Shrocinnovations Dot com on the specials page. So it's
not even one of those, like there's only one left,
you better go right now. There are three that are
available there on that page, so you can check that
out at shroc innovations dot com just click on specials
up there as well. We also have a couple. Uh,

(08:46):
we have a like last year's venture. We found a
display model in one of the service centers. We're cleaning
because it gets slow this time of year, so we
clean and we're like, we thought it was an empty box,
but it wasn't empty. It had a computer in it.
And we're like, oh, it's a venture, but it's a
venture with last year's chip in it. What are we
gonna do with this? Well, let's update it and to

(09:07):
check it out, make sure everything is good. Everything's great. Well,
let's go ahead and open box it on the website
for seven ninety nine. So there's a thirteen hundred dollars
venture for eight hundred dollars on the specials page at
schrocannovations dot com. Don't want to quite spend that much,
you know. We have a custom boundless computer in one
of those a nice glass case up there, one hundred
dollars off there as well, Custom Laptop Glant, the high

(09:27):
end laptop normally over a thousand dollars laptop normally seven
ninety nine, So there's lots of stuff that you can
pick up. Shock Innovations dot Com Slash Specials also coming
up on the program today. I've been playing around, as
I mentioned last week, with chat GPT a little bit,
and I'm becoming increasingly frustrated by the fact it can't

(09:49):
actually do anything for me. So I was lifting and
I screwed up my lower back again, third time in
a year, and something went squish, and I'm like, I
bulged a disk again or something. I'm an inch shorter
than I was when I started. This is not going well,
so maybe it's time I actually went and saw like
a physical therapist. And actually I had it healed properly

(10:11):
instead of just good enough. So I'm going to see
the PTS and doing all that stuff. And I asked
the PT I'm like, you know, hey, how do you
know it's healing well? Do you do any imaging before
and after? And you know with discs you have to
use an MRI. You can't do a CT scanner, an
X ray. It's got to be an MRI and they're like, no, no,
you'll know what's better when your symptoms go away. I'm like, well,
my symptoms are going to go away by on their

(10:31):
own if I don't do anything at all, So why
am I paying you? So if that's the measure by
which we're going to determine healed here, I'm just going
to reinjure myself again in six weeks, So let's not
and say we did so. I said, you know what,
I'm taking matters into my own hands. I Am going
to call Nebraska Health Imaging and I'm going to get
an MRI of my lumbar spine so that I can
look at a picture when I started PT, and then

(10:53):
look at a picture when I'm done with PT, and
we can have a database like, yes, look this is healed.
This is better. Now you can go to doing heavy things. Okay, great.
I call up to get an MRI and they tell
me you can't do that. It's illegal. You can't go
buy an MRI like a scan of your own body.

(11:15):
A doctor must prescribe it in the state of Nebraska. Now,
if that's not funny enough, the self pay cost is
four hundred and twenty five dollars, So they called me
to schedule it. And then the whole point of this
was I was gonna ask chat GPT to add this
to my calendar, like I add my MRI to the calendar. Sorry,
I can't interact with your calendar, Like what the hell

(11:37):
good are you? Then you can't even put an appointment
on my calendar. Oh, so they call me back and
they're like, okay, what's your insurance. I'm say I'm gonna
go self pay, and I'm looking at their website and
so if your self pay, it's for twenty five, and
if you use your insurance, it's for seventy five. That's
your portion that you have to pay. So you pay
fifty dollars more if you use your insurance, and then

(11:57):
they bill your insurance on top of it. But if
you just come in and pay yourself, it's only four
twenty five and out the door fifty bucks extra if
you need contrast, but I won't you charge me more?
And then you charge the insurance company double. That's what's
wrong with this medical world that we live in. But yeah,
my chat GPT couldn't even add that to my calendar

(12:18):
for me, So how do other it occurred to me
that you know, maybe maybe chat GPT is not best
suited for what I want to do. Maybe I should
look at some of the other AIS that are out there.
I know on the aftershocks, some of you selected or
selected suggested that I check out Grock, you know, the
X based AI, and there's Google's Gemini, there's Meta has

(12:38):
An AI. So there's all kinds of different AIS you
can try. So if we're going to pay tw hundred
bucks a month, let's try some out. So I started
to look into it. We're going to share that with
you on the program here today as well. And then finally,
if you want yet another story about how AI is
not going to take over the world anytime soon, two
computers decided to face off Chat GPT powered supercomputer data

(13:01):
center with all the Nvidia chips that you could possibly
have melting down in Unison playing nineteen seventy eight video
chess against a computer opponent, and chat GPT got smoked.
Wait till I tell you the computer that smoked it.
It's so bad. It's so bad, guys, I gotta tell

(13:23):
you about that on the program today. It's gonna be
hilarious for zero two five five, eight eleven, ten's number
to join us on the program. We're gonna take a
quick break here, guys. When we come back, only fifteen
percent of bankrupt twenty three and Me you know the
company twenty three meters, the genetic testing company. They went bankrupt,
Only fifteen percent of their users have asked to have

(13:45):
their genetic information deleted from twenty three and Me's records.
I'm one of the fifteen percent that did that. I'm
going to tell you when we come back why I
did that, And if you have data, if you ever
bought anything from twenty three and Me and sent in
one of those test swabkits to see your genetic heritage,
why you should really do the same. Coming up next
on compute this.

Speaker 4 (14:05):
There are enough unused computers in storage to give every man, woman,
and child in the US an old, outdated and useless
computer system. Obsolete tablets and smartphones are nearly as bad.
Most people know not to throw them into the landfill
where they leak and contaminate, but it's hard to find
a place to safely recycle electronics. That's why Shrock Innovations

(14:25):
offers free recycling for computers, laptops, phones.

Speaker 5 (14:28):
Tablets, cords, and accessories.

Speaker 4 (14:31):
In fact, only monitors and printers have a small recycling fee.
Everything else is free. More importantly, Schrock will securely delete
any data from your devices and hard drives before they
are sent to a certified recycling partner, who will then
repeat the wiping process just to be saved.

Speaker 5 (14:47):
When you recycle your.

Speaker 4 (14:48):
Old technology at Shrock, you know your identity and privacy
are protected and your equipment is being actually recycled by
a certified recycling partner. Shock is proud to recycle more
e waste than we produce annually, making a positive difference
to our economy and ecology. Do your part by dropping
your old gear at any Shock service center and be

(15:09):
part of the area's largest and most popular technology recycling program.

Speaker 6 (15:14):
With Shrock Innovations, now you can configure and purchase laptops, desktops, tablets,
and more all at the Newshrock Innovations dot com. Check
out our specials for one of a kind discounts and deals.

Speaker 4 (15:26):
You would probably rather drink the water at Camp La
June than get another call about the desperate need to
renew your cars expiring warranty.

Speaker 5 (15:34):
Who actually responds to those calls?

Speaker 4 (15:36):
Everyone wants to play the warranty game where you pay
money now just in case you need service later that
everyone hopes you won't neet or use.

Speaker 5 (15:44):
It's such a waste. It's no different with computers.

Speaker 4 (15:47):
Major manufacturers warranties have more subscript crosses than a Sunday
morning church service.

Speaker 5 (15:53):
Batteries are exempt.

Speaker 4 (15:54):
Hard dripes must be completely dead and forget about anything
that they can remotely.

Speaker 5 (15:58):
Clean us physical damage.

Speaker 4 (16:00):
That's why Shrock warranties are different. When you purchase a
modular piece or a solid state laptop and extend your warranty,
we offer a no risk money back guarantee. If you
need the warranty, you will be thrilled to have it
if you don't use it, and we refund your money
automatically every time.

Speaker 5 (16:16):
That's right.

Speaker 4 (16:17):
We are so confident in the quality of our products
that our extended warranties are refundable. Many Shock customers use
their refunds to purchase another warranty, or pocket the savings
and move on. We all know you'll need it to
cover that expiring car warranty anyway. Shock's refundable extended warranties
just another way the Shrock Innovations computer company makes your

(16:37):
computer work for you.

Speaker 2 (16:44):
All right, guys, welcome back into compute this. My name's
Thor Schrock. I'm the owner of the Shrock Innovations computer Company.
Something that we typically don't talk about aside from you know,
maintenance checkup sales, and when we were pushing certificates and saying, hey,
come on in for a maintenance checkup, I want to
make sure I remind you that your technology, your computer
is just like your homes air conditioner, just like your

(17:06):
your vehicle's oil. It needs regular maintenance to continue operating
the way that you want it to operate. Can your
computer operate if you don't bring it in for a
six month maintenance check up? Well, of course. Will it
run for a year or more without maintenance? Of course?
Just like if you drive your car three thousand, five thousand,
nine thousand, ten thousand miles without an oil change, that

(17:26):
doesn't mean the engine's going to seize up on you. However,
eventually it will. Case in point, I've got a snow
thrower in my garage. It's a beautiful twenty four inch Craftsman,
big old snow thrower thing. I think I paid eight
hundred dollars for this thing at Lows when I bought
it a few years back. And this winter when it snowed,
I went to fire that sucker up and I almost
ripped my arm out of the socket because apparently last

(17:49):
time I ran it, I didn't check the oil. I
had it maintenance the year before, so two years ago.
So last year I ran it all year with no maintenance.
I just skipped a year on the maintenance. It's heavy.
I didn't want to lift it in the truck and
take it to the engine guy. And yeah, I just
skipped it. It's fine, I'm sure. And now I'm watching.
Now I'm cruising Facebook marketplace in the middle of the

(18:09):
summer looking at snow throwers because I know this is
the time of year to pick up a fifty dollars
snow thrower from someone's garage when they just want the
space back. Next year, I'll be really thankful I did,
so I'm not spending eight hundred dollars. Even better, if
I coul get the exact same one that I had,
so I could just transplant the engine or something, that'd
be great. The reason I bring it up, guys, is
a lot of you, and I mean a lot of
you purchased prepaid maintenance check up certificates while we were

(18:32):
busy with the sale so you could avoid the rush.
I mentioned. During the summertime, things slowed down in the
service centers. This is an excellent time to get those
computers in and get their maintenance done, especially if you're
going out of town or something's going on. So I
just wanted to put a bug in your ear. If
you do have one of these maintenance certificates and you're
up for computer maintenance, we're going to start sending alerts
to people, honestly, and it's I don't want to be

(18:53):
like the dentist, you know, it's like, you know, time
for maintenance, Come get your teeth cleaned. You know, I
don't want to be that person, but you know, maybe
you need a little reminder, you know, So this is
considered this a friendly reminder. It's not a postcard, it's
not a phone call or text message, just a friendly
nudge nudge. Hey, you already paid for it, you may
as well use it, you know, get that into us.
And do you know that we offer free pickup and
free drop off also, so like you don't even have

(19:15):
to bring it in we'll come get it for you,
do the maintenance and bring it back to you. It's
that simple. Over at truck for zero two, five, five, eight,
eleven ten is the number to join us on the program.
Let's go into those phones real quick. John, Welcome to
the program. How can I help you on compute this?

Speaker 7 (19:29):
Hi?

Speaker 8 (19:29):
Thor. I've got an old Dell and I keep coming
up with a need to get rid of stuff because
the memory is full.

Speaker 2 (19:45):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (19:46):
Well, I've dumped just about every picture and all my
videos and I'm still getting that. So I think there's
a long file or something. I want to know where
that all that junk is that I can get rid of.

(20:06):
I'm afraid that started ump and other stuff because I
don't know if it'll make my computer run worse. And
I'm saving my money for a holiday special, and I
want to limp this through.

Speaker 2 (20:18):
Al Any suggests no, fair enough, fair enough, So a
couple things. First of all, just to wrap this into
what I said just a few seconds ago, this is
exactly why you need a maintenance checkup every six months,
because the accumulation of stuff that you can't necessarily see
that state that's saved on the computer that doesn't need
to be there that takes up all kinds of space

(20:39):
would blow your mind. Now, I also know you're you're
not looking to spend money. You probably don't have a
maintenance certificate. You probably don't want a maintenance a computer
that you're planning on ditching. And you know it's just crazy,
but the maintenance checkup is only like four or five
months away, or the maintenance of the holiday special is
only four or five months away. I mean, it's crazy.
So here is blown by. So I would suggest you do.

(21:00):
There's a free program that you can get called c Cleaner.

Speaker 8 (21:06):
I've got it and I've run it several times.

Speaker 2 (21:08):
Okay, and so that's already gone through. So that's going
to delete all your temporary files, your cash files. The
other thing is sometimes in the in the menu on
the left side, there are options you can select there
to do a more aggressive cleaning than the default options
in the radio. I never coach people through what to
select and what not to select, because if you tick
the wrong box you can cause some weird issues. But

(21:30):
there is some stuff that makes sense. Like you know
application log files, you know their logs, they're just like
if something goes wrong, you look at the log file
to see what went wrong. If nothing's going wrong, don't
look at the log file. It's not a big deal.
So application logs are there patch uninstalled files. So whenever
you install a Windows update, your computer saves the piece

(21:50):
of software that was there before in case you ever
want to uninstall that update. Well, when is the last
time any of us, I mean, once in a blue
moon you've uninstalled the Windows update. So if everything is
going good on your computer, there's no sense in keeping
all those extra pieces of Windows around. So you can
you can play around with the options to check and
unchecked things to give yourself a little more room to breathe. Now,

(22:11):
the other thing, if this computer has a solid state
hard drive, it does one of the things that I
would double check is what is the total capacity of
that drive? Has it shrunk so kind of like my back?
You know, it's not supposed to do that, you know,
so if your hard drive gets it in shorter, you

(22:31):
might have a problem with your spinal discs and you
shouldn't do that anymore. So, basically solid state hard drives,
over time, as sectors go bad, the computer will mark
those sectors is unavailable for use. And so if your
drive is in poor health, it will cause the available
capacity to shrink. The other thing is when solid state
drives are filled to capacity, so it sounds like yours

(22:54):
is pretty full because you're trying to clear up space.
It forces the drive to only use the available area
of the drive. So, in other words, it wears the
drive incredibly fast. It causes it to fail faster, and
so you could have a situation where your drive is
starting to fail, causing the capacity to reduce, making it
like you can't store anything. So you try to delete
more stuff, but the drive is still pretty full, so

(23:16):
it makes it fail faster, causing it to shrink. And
so you could be doing everything right, but you could
have a failing piece of hardware on your hands. That's
just getting smaller and smaller and smaller over time. So
what's the capacity on that.

Speaker 8 (23:29):
I've checked the drive advisor or er and it doesn't
say that I'm anything's.

Speaker 2 (23:39):
Wrong, gotcha. It'll depend on what type of solid state
drive you have. And the good news is, guys, I've
got to build in my inbox from the coder. That's
like success, Whila, it is done. Drive Advisor ready to go.
I'm not we haven't looked. Alfonso is building it and
checking it and testing it because you know, we always
double check. But once we have that new version of

(24:00):
advisor out, I when you're going to get an automatic
upgrade to it. If you have an NVMME solid state
hard drive, the old drive advisor doesn't accurately measure it.
So that's one of the reasons why we're making a
new one, is because the new technology works differently and
so we have to measure it differently. So there's a
lot of factors that go into this, which again is
why we tell you every six months you should really
get a maintenance check up. Now, with all that said,

(24:23):
the only things that you want to really delete from
your computer safely are going to be in the user folder.
So these would be things in like the desktop folder,
the documents folder, the videos folder like you've done, the
music folder, things like that. You never want to go
into the seed drive and just start grabbing folders and
deleting them and things like that's a recipe for causing
a real bad problem. And we have customers that have

(24:44):
done that come into the service center. So you don't
want to do that. But yeah, basically go ahead and
see if there's anything left that you can pull out
of that user folder, if you can get it in
for a maintenance check up, it might not be a
bad I know you won't want to put any money
at all into it, but if you're going to try
to get through this for another half a year, it
might not be a bad plan. I know you're not
going to sink money. If you do have a bad
hard drive, it would be foolish to sink money into it.

(25:05):
You probably just try to see if you can make
it last till the end. But if it's one hundred
and twenty eight gig hard drive, Windows is taking up
a third of the hard drive by itself. I mean,
there's just not a whole lot you can do there.

Speaker 8 (25:16):
Unfortunately, it says six hundred and ninety one megabytes free
of four hundred and forty two gigabytes, So you have.

Speaker 2 (25:24):
A five hundred gig hard drive. It's four eighty or
five hundred somewhere in there, just depending on the brand.
So yeah, I mean that's that's a sizable hard drive.
There's no reason you should be full if you don't
have a lot of personal data on that drive.

Speaker 8 (25:39):
Yeah, and I've gone through downloads and documents and dumped
all that too and recycle them.

Speaker 2 (25:47):
Yeah, something's not right. Something's fishy in Denmark. Here. If
you if you've thrown away everything that's important to your
life and you're still full at a five hundred gig
hard drive, that's too full. So I would something's weird.
I would definitely get that in for us to take
a look at it. Thank you for the call, John,
I really appreciate it. I apologize. I got to run here.
We're coming up against the bottom of the hour and
I got to bounce to a break here. But real

(26:07):
quick before we do that. Only fifteen percent of twenty
three and me users have requested that their data be
deleted from twenty three and Me's database. Why is this important?
Twenty three in me is bankrupt now. If you're not
familiar with what twenty three and me was, it was
a genetic testing company, and originally, back when it was

(26:28):
first founded, they would tell you all kinds of things like,
you know, if your likelihood of getting breast cancer, your
likelihood of prostate cancer. And then the FDA got involved
and said, you know, you don't really know the science
behind this. You can't just jump in and tell people this. There,
the people are starting need to make like life altering
surgical decisions, are doing like, you know, breast removals and
stuff because they don't want to get breast cancer. I mean,

(26:48):
it's like, you can't do that unless you know and
you don't know how all these genes interact with each other.
You're just saying this gene is present. So twenty three
and me had to pare it back, and they pushed
more toward ants estuary and you know, and traits like oh,
why is your hair brown? Or you know, likelihood that
you you have photonic sneeze reflex. And even though that
was the thing, do you know when the sun hits you,

(27:09):
It like fifty percent of the population will sneeze when
they go from a dark room to the sun. Just
it's a photonic sneeze reflex. I have it. You'll get
hit by a sun and you sneeze and then you're fine. Yeah,
but yeah, twenty three of me, you could tell you
if you had that, or you could just go out
in the sun and see if you sneeze. But you know,
things like that, you know, pretty cool stuff. But the

(27:31):
thing is what people don't think about is that genetic information. Yes,
that is your genetic information, and you might not care
if your genetic information is exposed to whoever buys twenty
three in me, whatever Chinese conglomerate buys that company, because
the only thing that twenty three in me has to

(27:52):
sell is the trove of genetic data on American citizens.
Why would genetic data on American citizens be important? Well,
if you were going to try to make a weapon there,
or a virus for example, that would target you know,
kind of like what they did in South Korea last week.
A one hundred percent lethal bird flu variant that's one

(28:16):
hundred percent lethal within twelve days to every mammal it touched.
Thank you, South Korea. That's real. We'll talk about that
during the aftershock that happened last week. No one talked
about it because there's a lot of other stuff going on.
But gain of function lives. We didn't learn anything, did we.
So I mean, if you were going to tailor something
like that to attack a specific population, you might want

(28:37):
to know the traits, the genetic traits of that population
for example. Oh wow, right, so you know all the same.
Let me give you a more personal reason. Yes, it's
your genetic information, and maybe you don't care if your
genetic information is released, but do you know, of course,
the whole point of this was ancestry, so your children,

(29:01):
their children, and their children will all have the same
genetic information. So you're not losing just your information. You're
losing the information for every child in your entire lineage
going forward. It's that big of a deal. So what
do you have to do? Go to twenty three in

(29:22):
me dot com, log into your account, and then go
through the process to delete your data. They will delete
your data from their databases so that it's not present
in the sale to another company. It takes time for
the deletion process to happen. It's not like there's some
dude just processing requests in a cave, like you know,
like the US government, you know, processing retirement request down

(29:42):
in a cave, down a shifty elevator. It takes time
to process the request, So you don't want to wait
until like, oh, they announced they're going to sell it
to China Corp. And then oh, no, I better go
delete my data. I thought they would sell it to
US Corp. And it would be safe and secure. You know,
It's not like that. You need to put in the
request now so it has time to process through. So
I would encourage you if you do have if you

(30:03):
ever purchased a twenty three meters DNA kit and send
it in. They have your genetic data on file even
if you haven't logged in years. Take a moment, log in,
reset your password, do your log in, and delete your
genetic data. Your children will probably thank you some point
in the future for zero two, five, five, eight, eleven, ten.
Got to take a break here, guys. When we come back,
Billy Jerry, your calls coming up. Also, how might Google's

(30:26):
Gemini compete better with chat GPT. I've got a few
ideas on that, and I'm going to tell you about
them coming up next on compute this.

Speaker 4 (30:31):
Computer problems usually don't just suddenly happen. Most failures usually
start out as small issues with few or no symptoms.

Speaker 5 (30:38):
Over time, they grow into error messages.

Speaker 4 (30:40):
Blue screens, and other problems that can be costly to fix.
Shrock innovations by annual preventative maintenance check up catches those
small problems now before they can to tasticize and become
tomorrow's costly repairs. During the maintenance check up. Our experienced
technicians perform up to eight hours of tests, checks, automated
repairs and optimizations that keep your computer at peak efficiency

(31:04):
while identifying potential issues while you still have options about
how to handle them. When your computer gets its first
check up, it can see up to its twenty five
percent performance improvement and leaves our service center cleaned, sanitized,
and running better than the day you bought it. Just
About every complex device requires maintenance. Your computer is no different,
especially considering the valuable information that passes through it every day.

(31:27):
If you have not had your computer maintenance in the
past six months, you are overdue. Stop in or call
any of our service centers to arrange a free pickup
to ensure your computer continues to work for you.

Speaker 7 (31:38):
Today's fragile computers need maintenance more than ever. Your computer
needs a maintenance check up every six months to last
beyond it's eighteen month expected lifespan.

Speaker 4 (31:48):
Have you noticed that almost every piece of technology seems
to do its best to be disposable? Every day people
talk their phones, tablets, and other electronic devices because they
can't be repaired. Man have engineered their products to fail
on a schedule so they can extract more money out
of your family budget automatically every year or so. But

(32:08):
what if it didn't have to be that way. What
if you could get the performance of today's fastest computers
with the expansion and upgrade options you used to enjoy
You just described Shrck's modular desktop computers. Having the right
tool for the job is important, and Shock's Modular desktop
PCs packed the performance and flexibility to handle your computing
needs from just checking the email to running a complex business.

(32:32):
Modular desktops are engineered to be easily repaired with widely
available industry standard parts. Every component is selected intentionally to
give you years of upgrade and repair options. It is
not uncommon for a short customer to be using the.

Speaker 5 (32:46):
Same computer for a decade after they bought it.

Speaker 4 (32:49):
Modular PCs are the most popular custom computers in the
Midwest for a reason. When you are ready for your
next computer, stop in to check out the modular lifestyle
or shop online at shruck innovation dot com.

Speaker 2 (33:05):
All right, folks, welcome back into compute.

Speaker 7 (33:07):
This.

Speaker 2 (33:07):
My name is Thor Schrock. I'm the owner of the
Schrock Innovation's computer company, where we have four locations to
help you out. If you need a maintenance check up
on your computer if your hard drive is full, if
five hundred gig hard drive is that full, and who
we tend to I had a two hundred and fifty
gig hard drive on my studio computer and it had
Dropbox on it, and I didn't realize that it was
as it was saving every radio show that I did. Like,

(33:28):
eventually the hard drive got full and like drive Advisor
on my computer popped up and was like, your herd
drive's full. Because that's a feature of the new drive Advisor.
I'll tell you if your hard drive is too full.
I had to throw a health alert and so I'm like,
what do you mean my drive is too full? Like
this was a holiday special from two In my mind
it was two years ago. But no, actually this was
like five years ago. Nope, that was a two hundred

(33:50):
and fifty gig hard drive back then. Oh my gosh.
You know how technology has marched on. So we can
help you out at all four of our locations in Lincoln,
just south of fourteenth and Pine Lake Road in Omaha,
one hundred and sixty eighth in Burke, across the street
from the Village Point shopping Center in Papilion eighty fourth
and Highway three seventy in the Midlands Place shopping center,

(34:10):
and of course eighty we're at day I want to
say eighty four. That's Papillions at eighty fourth. We're in
West de Moines, Iowa as well on University Avenue over
there you can check us out also Shrowcinnovations dot com.
Click on that specials page, go to shopping then specials
to see all the computers that we have available with
multi hundred dollars discounts. Right now as we go through
our spring cleaning phase. Fun stuff going on over at

(34:33):
Shrowcinnovations dot com. Four zero two five five eight eleven
ten is the number to join us on the program,
and if you're outside of the metro area, you can
reach us toll free eight eight eight two five zero
two zero nine to one. That's what Billy has done. Billy,
welcome to the program. How can I help you on
compute this today?

Speaker 9 (34:49):
Hey Sor, I have a small business and I'm currently
using connect apps, the app Connect, but lately it's been
going through and doubling up ship and then delete and shifts.
So I'll report it to the bot that it makes
you reported to and they're asking for examples, So I

(35:09):
give them examples and then report it, and then they're
coming back saying, please show me an example. It's redundant.
So I'm trying to find a program that would work,
but also something that would work like similar with I
don't know if QuickBooks does it where you can keep
track of schedules, your mileage and all that stuff together.

(35:30):
You have any suggestions, Yeah, are you a gig worker?

Speaker 8 (35:32):
Is that?

Speaker 2 (35:33):
Are you tracking like a gig job?

Speaker 9 (35:36):
I own a security company on the side.

Speaker 2 (35:38):
Okay, so not quite the same thing. So there's a
lot of apps out there. A lot of them are
designed for gig workers. This is why I asked. Like Solo,
for example, as an app that's available on Google Play
and iOS as well. But it's like the ultimate operating
system for gig workers. It tracks income, expenses, tax projections
like all that stuff, and of course mileage. There's tons

(35:59):
of apps tracking mileage specifically. Stride is another one. They
have a free mileage and expense tracking app. It works
along with their other services. They have a health insurance
and tax prep assistance and stuff like that. But Stride
would probably be a really good one for you to
look at. It's available on both Apple and Android as well.
The other ones called Everlance. There's Hurdler h u r

(36:22):
d l R Hurdler. On a side note, do you
guys know why it is that they make up funny
names for apps that drop like vowels out and stuff
like hurdler h u r d l R hurdler. So
used to be like Beck and mar Darry. You know,
we have to go reserve every possible way of spelling
Shrock Innovations dot com because people will go to We

(36:44):
had a competitor wants reserve one of the misspellings of
our name and then try to poach our clients. It
was crazy. So why would you purposely make pick a
name that's hard to spell? You know? Why would you
do that? Well, the answer is if you've ever tried
to apply for a trademark. I can't get drive Advisor
trademarked because it's too descriptive. It's too generic. It tells

(37:06):
you exactly what the program does. It advises you if
your drive is failing. It's a drive Advisor secure updater.
Can't get a trademark for that either. Why it's too
descriptive it securely updates your computer. That'd be like trademarking
anti virus. You can't do that, Like, oh my gosh,
so I have to make up a stupid name. I
have to call it drive advice. I should a should
know I A would say drive adviser. I should just

(37:28):
not say er. I should have just dropped the E entirely.
I just a drive advisor. Or it's just error in
the end.

Speaker 9 (37:38):
Yeah, they did a push last week here. What do
you call it? Samsung did? Is there a way to
reverse it? Because, like we'll say, screen recorder, I'm trying
to like, if there's a video I want a screen
record or something like that that's online or something I
used to spill to record it. Now it doesn't even
give you an option to put that on your home

(38:01):
screen or even showing. But it shows in your files
as having the area, but it doesn't come up as
an icon anymore.

Speaker 2 (38:07):
Gotcha. So the thing with stuff like that, you're talking
about a security update. Essentially that changed the way things function.
It was an OS update. They package those along with
security updates. So it's generally a really bad idea to
try to roll that back. On a long term basis,
there isn't really an uninstalled path to roll it back easily.
You can factory reset your phone. That's about about all

(38:28):
you can do. I would suggest you stay with the
security app, but my guess is here there's probably it's
changed the way one of the apps works. And for example,
if you're trying to locate a file on your phone,
and thank you for the call, by the way, Billy,
I appreciate it. I did get you in the drawing
as well for the twenty five dollars Shock Innovations gift certificate.
But if you're looking for a file on your phone,
like you know, on my Samsung device, I use the

(38:50):
files app and I can, you know, I can just
jump right in and give the file that I'm looking
for there. Also, it's kind of neat if you're having
trouble doing something specific on the device and you want
to have some more options. If you have Windows eleven
on your computer, a hugely underrated feature of Windows eleven
is phone Link. If you just hit start and type

(39:10):
the word phone, it'll bring up the phone Link app
on your computer, and it will actually link to your
phone so that you can see your phone screen on
your computer. Screen, you can make calls from your computer.
You can see and respond to text messages on your
computer screen. Rather, people with max have been doing this
for years, but for people with PCs this is like, oh,
you know, this is great. And you can do that

(39:31):
with Android devices through phone link and you can check that.
I just hit start on your keyboard, type the word
phone It'll pop right up. Only available on Windows eleven.
Thanks for the call, Billy, appreciate it for zero two,
five to five, eight eleven ten is the number to
join us on the program. So I'm talking about AI stuff.
And last week I went into all the details about
me screwing around with chat GPT trying to get it

(39:51):
to create a poster for me with a graph on it,
and all the it was just awful. I still don't
have a poster. I could have created the poster manually.
Faster I could have. I could have got sharpies and
a piece of cardboard and made a poster faster and
got and it held it out on a street corner
and just held a Bitcoin difficulty poster up and people
would have given me donations. I would have made money
by now. I mean, it's like, this is a great

(40:14):
chart look at my chart. Yeah bitcoin, brother, here you go.
She puts like a big old address on the bottom,
Send me some bitcoin. But yeah, I thot it's gonna do.
If everyone goes to cryptocurrency, how do people stand on
street corners and ask for money?

Speaker 3 (40:27):
Probably probably have digital bagging going on. Right, You don't
go on the corner. You have AI do it for you.

Speaker 2 (40:34):
Now, Yeah, that's right. I could have my bo my
my optimist bots stand out there with a tin cup.
But if the tin cup is just an affectation, because
on the other hand, there's like a sign and it's
got no kings and it's got like a bitcoin address
on it, you know that's that's there. You go, somebody
would trash my robot. Oh golly, how did I get
off on this tangent? So AI AI? We're talking about AI,

(40:55):
and I thought occurred to me, maybe I should look
at some of these other AI models and see if
maybe there's a better fit for what I'm trying to do.
So I started my path. I looked into one other
one this week, and I looked into Google's Gemini. Google
Gemini can actually do a lot of really cool, useful
things as long as you're locked into the Google platform.

(41:16):
What do I mean by that? So I mentioned I
wanted to get my MRI on the calendar, but chat
GPT couldn't add that to a calendar, couldn't add to
my phone calendar, couldn't addit to my computer calendar. Well,
if you use Google Calendar, Gemini can add things to
your calendar. So if that's the calendar that you use
on your phone, they could technically add it to your
phone calendar. If that's the computer, the calendar you use

(41:37):
on your computer, technically it could be added to your
computer as well. Gemini can send an email for you
using Gmail. Only Gemini can make or edit or save
a document for you, which chat GPT can't do. Chat
GPT cannot create a word file for me, but you

(41:59):
can create Google doc using Gemini. So that's kind of interesting.
So it occurred to me all of a sudden, what
a huge competitive advantage that's going to be over chat GPT.
That Google has an entire ecosystem of apps and functional
things that people are already using that they will be
able to further automate. That will give them huge productivity gains.

(42:22):
That's big, that's really big. Then it got me thinking
about Microsoft with Copilot, Well, Microsoft's also got word and
Access and Excel and Outlook and all these things, and
Copilot integrates with Microsoft three sixty five, not so much
with the older apps, but realistically not so much with
Microsoft three sixty five either. It's got a lot of
the same limitations that Chat GPT does. So it's going

(42:43):
to be really interesting to see how this plays out
from a competitive standpoint. Which AI platform is going to
give you the ability to do these things first, and
that's what I'm excited about, and that's probably where I'll
end up being because that's what we all want, right.
We want this to make our lives a little easier,
but we want to control. We don't want to have
it just magically make our lives either, which is the
direction Apple is going. Apple Intelligence is getting good the

(43:08):
stuff that came out at their their Worldwide Developer Conference.
Apple is taking the current Chat GPT AI clunky model
and they're iphoning it and it's going to be smooth
and it's gonna be it's gonna be good. So keep
an eye on what Apple is doing because that's kind
of the magical way AI is just going to come
into your life and do all these cool things for you.

(43:29):
And that's maybe what people think they want. I just
want to have a little control over it. I don't
want it to be so Skynet on me. You know,
it's just a little bit of control. Do you want
to send this picture to friends?

Speaker 10 (43:38):
No?

Speaker 2 (43:38):
No, no, no, no no no no, don't do that. I
didn't tell you to do that.

Speaker 8 (43:42):
You know.

Speaker 2 (43:42):
I don't need to do in that form me automatically.
So I say, I want to control it just a
little bit. All right, we're gonna take our final break here, guys,
when we come back. I know, I don't want to
beat the the the AI stuff with a stick here.
But there was a story that came across my desk
about chat GPT playing losing badly, like I think the

(44:04):
quote was it would get laughed out of a third
grade chess club and it played another computer and it
lost so badly that it was it was laughable. And
it made excuses too. It was like, no, I only
lost because if you'll just start over, I promise I'll
do better. Yeah, thora just like you said, if it
start over, I'll get your poster right this time. Sure

(44:26):
you will. All right, So I'm gonna tell you what
computer that chat GPT lost its biscuits to and what
were some of the excuses it made as to why
it was losing. Coming up next on compute this.

Speaker 4 (44:38):
Shock Innovations solid state laptops are engineered locally for speed
and reliability you just can't get from the major national brands.
Each of our laptops starts off with an a Zeus chassis.
We remove the stock drives and memory and upgrade them

Throck Innovations makes your computer work for you.

Speaker 2 (46:27):
All right, folks, welcome back. In final segment of the program,
just a quick reminder that at the conclusion of the
show today we'll be doing an aftershock. There were just
a few things happening in the news this week, and
there was a lot going on. You know, you may
have watched some of the Army two fifty parade. That
was pretty spectacular. If you got the chance to watch that,
I was very impressed. I felt embarrassed for anybody who

(46:50):
was making fun of that. I felt embarrassed for Rand Paul,
you know, calling it a fascist jack boot parade. I mean,
good golly man. So anyway, the uh, there's a lot
going on, And because there was so much going on,
you probably didn't hear that. You know, the government of
Iran is collapsing, that there are flights that have left
for Moscow already, they're done, it's just a matter of time.

(47:16):
So there's a lot to talk about. So if you
haven't heard any of that, you might want to tune
into the Aftershock, where we talk about all kinds of
news from alt sources like so a lot of it
is single sourced and a lot of its opinions, So
I can't really call it news. I think Gary would
not let me be on the air with that, if
you know, if it was like a radio, if I
was on official terrestrial airtime, you know, thor thor you

(47:37):
got it. You gotta double sourcer stuff, I know, I know.
But when we're on the Aftershock, it's just a podcast
full of people who know maybe he knows, maybe he doesn't,
but it sure is fun to listen to. We could
all we could all sit together and have a good
time at the Aftershock. So we'll kick that off. Give
me six or ten minutes after the end of the
program here to get that up at facebook dot com
slashwalk Innovations, and we'll get get the party started over there.

(47:59):
In the meantime, though, four zero two, five, five, eight
eleven ten, Jerry, welcome to the program. How can I
help you on compute this today?

Speaker 10 (48:06):
Oh, thank you for taking my call. I'm upgraded. I'm
running Windows ten. I went to upgrade to eleven. I
was very happy with my PC, so I updated the
motherboard and in order for to recognize the drives, I
had to change the bio setting to CFM support enabled.

(48:31):
So once I did that, I ran to help check
and see if it's Windows eleven compatible and it's ad
the ua FI firmware setting needs to be changed.

Speaker 8 (48:43):
Yes, it's kind of a.

Speaker 10 (48:46):
Catch twenty two because the first step is I need
to disable the CSM support and if I do that,
my computerble.

Speaker 8 (48:55):
Food yep, So what is CSM all.

Speaker 2 (49:01):
Right, So you're missing a step in the middle, and
I think that's the that's the problem that's confusing you.
Everything that you said is absolutely correct. So yes, to
to do what you need to do to the computer,
you have to have it booted into Windows ten, which
means you have to have CSM disabled like like it
was before. Then to run Windows eleven you're required to
have it turned on. And if you turn it on,

(49:22):
Windows ten won't boot. And if you turn it off,
you can't install Windows eleven. So the problem is the
the your hard drive is formatted, it needs to the
you need to convert your your hard drive partition to
a GPT partition, and the hard drive partition your you're
a hard drives partition needs to be converted to GPT,

(49:46):
And there's a there's a if you do a Google search,
you can find there's a command line you can do.
It's a d I s M, a DISM command you
can do in your in your command to trance to
change it. It will still boot into Windows ten, So
you have to do all this while it's booted into
Windows ten. Then you make the changes to the motherboard,
the bios and everything else. Then you boot it in,
you boot it up again and it'll boot into Windows

(50:08):
ten with the proper Windows eleven motherboard settings. Then you
can upgrade to Windows eleven and it'll go. So you know,
this is this is part of what when we do
a core upgrade in the service centers for people, that's
where we change out your mother board, your processor, and
your memory essentially just like what you just did. The
biggest challenge we have in some cases is getting people's

(50:30):
Some people have hard drives, they've updated from Windows seven
to Windows Visita, to Windows ten, and then now they
want to go to Windows eleven and you're like, wow,
this thing is like got partitions that are older than God,
I mean, and so we have to convert all of
them and get them converted properly and in the right order.
On the heart times we have to move them around
with a different utility to get the computer to boot properly.

(50:52):
So if any of it sounds like you've done ninety
percent of the work, it's just this last piece, this
Windows eleven upgrade component that you need to have done.
Have you ever been into our service center for anything, Jerry, Okay,
so you know where we're located. But if you can
get if you want to bring that into us. You've
done all the hardware work. There's no hardware work left

(51:13):
to do. It's just installing Windows eleven. So you know,
we need you to install Windows eleven. Here's how much,
you know, one hour or two hours, just depending on
what we need to do. But then we can do
that entire hard drive because before we even start, we
back up the entire hard drive. Because sometimes when you're
running that DSM command, everything just disappears, and that's not

(51:35):
a good feeling. Uh So you do that happens to
you one time, and you start doing backups every single
time before you do that command. So unless you're Thor,
then you're like, I'm sure it's fine when you hit
the button, and they'll text around you are screaming, you know,
but it's always fine when I hit the buttons. I
got that energy, all right, And then I walk away

(51:56):
and it blows up and they're like, dang it, Thor,
where's the backup? So you know, I mean, we would
properly back up the drive. We would go through do
the partition change. Once the partition change is done, then
we would change the bio settings on your new motherboard.
Then Windows eleven could be installed, so we could do
as little or as much as you'd want us to do.
But essentially what you need to do is to convert

(52:17):
that partition to a GPT partition using a DSIM command
or d SM sorry, dism DSM command, and so you
can google it. It'll pop right up. It's something that
gets done all the time. But it's a command line
command where you it's you know, twenty thirty characters. You
have to actually type it in a command line and
hit enter, and it has a little progress bar that

(52:39):
goes by and does all the stuff. And then supposedly
it's done, and you reboot the computer and then you
can change your settings in the motherboard. Then you can
install Windows eleven. But that's the step that you're missing
in the middle.

Speaker 8 (52:49):
Okay, all right, wow, great, well, thank you very much.

Speaker 2 (52:53):
No problem, Jerry, thank you, and good job getting that
computer Windows eleven ready. Man, that's amazing to have you
to do that much work on your own. Get it there. John, Congratulations,
you're the winner of the twenty five dollars Shock Innovations
gift certificate. We'll get that out to you here coming
up on Monday. Also Chat GPT decided they were going
to play chess. Chat GPT is playing chess against an

(53:16):
Atari twenty six hundred, the nineteen seventy eight game video Chess,
and it I mean it loses, bad, embarrassingly bad. And
chat GPT says because of the low resolution graphics, I
couldn't tell the difference between the rooks and the bishops.
That was its excuse, like the graphics were too bad
that I couldn't tell the difference. Please let me try again.

(53:38):
I promise I'll do better. All right, guys, have a
great week. We'll talk to you next weekend. Stay tuned
for the Aftershock, and we'll see you next weekend for
another edition of Compute This
