Speaker 1 (00:00):
Gary Sadelmayer, Jim Rose welcoming Nebraska's Colonel Tom Brewer back
(00:04):
to the program after the Russia Ukraine, or rather the
Trump Puttin meeting. Tom has been there many times to
Ukraine and fighting alongside Ukrainians and joins us for a
few minutes this morning. So Tom, good to have you back.
When you analyze what we heard from that meeting, what's
(00:24):
your view now of what might happen?
Speaker 2 (00:27):
Well, Good morning, Gary morning. The result was that they
put a lot of hype into coming out of there
with a peace treaty or a ceasefire, and that didn't happen.
A lot of the details to the plan are not
evident right now. I think it will probably be later.
But the problem is we're given Coot a lot of
(00:52):
you know, spotlight time, and he's able to, you know,
continue to drag the war out and not really make
any concessions yet. Now. You know, maybe there are some
that are offered up. But the last that anybody said
that what he has dug in on and said that
I want those five oblasts oblasts or like states returned,
(01:17):
or I want to keep those and not return them
to the Ukrainians. You know that includes about four point
four million people and those five oblasts, and the size
of the land is going to be, you know, the
size of Nebraska, and how bad. How can you blame
Zolensky for not wanting to give that up. There has
(01:38):
to be a compromise in the middle, and some of
the discussions of having security by guaranteeing British, German, French
on the ground over there. You know, I don't see
him allowing that to happen. So I just worry that
right now we're stretching things out, just moving things to
right like he's done so very well putin and it
(02:02):
kills more every day, and you know, we want to
stop the killing. We either have got to make some
hard decisions like give them the resources they need and
I mean serious resources they need, and end it because
if we step away now, you know, the future does
not look very bright. And the loss of all of
the the land for the bread basket of Europe, Central
(02:23):
Asia and North Africa, you know, that's a that's a
tremendous loss for the world.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
Yes, I think we have to look at this, we
being in the United States, as what is in our
interests and certainly having putin control the entirety of what
is now Ukraine is not in anybody's best interests. That
has to be a big part of the calculation. That
having been said, I thought it was significant to putin
(02:50):
number one he wanted the meeting, and number two. According
to Steve Whitcoff, he agreed to security guarantees if they
reach a deal. Security guarantees by some European nations, and
with the US backing, those seem to be incremental bits
of progress to me, Tom, what about you?
Speaker 2 (03:11):
They are progress if he keeps his word. To keep
in mind, he broke in every agreement, I mean all
the way back to the Buddhapest agreement which guaranteed their
security if they give up nuclear weapons in the US,
and the UK signed on to that. So I worry
that we're gonna we're not going to force a end
of this with a way to actually make sure that
(03:34):
he follows through with his word, because I'm still not
opposed to NATO membership, you know, because if you look
at NATO membership, there was five basic things there. You know,
you have to have a democracy government, you have to
have a market economy, you have to have some control
of the military. You have to have what they call
a good neighbor policy, and you have to have a
military compatibility. They have all that. They will have the
(03:56):
most powerful, well trained army and all of Europe, one
of the best in the world. But we got to
let him get to the point where there's an end
because they are slowly bleeding some of their their you know,
they're no longer bleeding their sons and daughters, they're bleeding
mothers and fathers and grandfathers in that war.
Speaker 3 (04:15):
Well, Colonel Brewer, the other thing that has bubbled up
this weekend is that really they what he wants is
the Eastern and I'm going to mispronounce this, so please
correct me. Is it the Dantesk region? Is that in
in the Luhan's region, which is right now you're not
even controlled by the Russians, but it's the most heavily
fortified region of Ukraine. And if they give that to putin,
(04:38):
it'll be awfully easy for him to launch an attack
on Kiev. And he's banking on another flimsy democrat becoming
president of twenty twenty eight and they won't, they'll back
off on any security guarantees.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
What's your view of that, Yeah, the denouncecreation is very
valuable and a lot of natural resources in it. But
if you look at the others of Zapariza, Curson in Crimea,
those are more agg related. Uh so he's he benefits
in all of them. But see he doesn't own the
big cities. Uh. You know, Zaparize. The city Zaparize is
(05:15):
three quarters of a million people. So you know, for
them to say we want everything to include those cities,
it's just unreasonable. But you know, they have made incremental
progresses and from one talking we didn't have that before.
But I think with the meeting going on today, that's
gonna help shape things and and it's almost probably better
if you know, if Trump steps back and let these
(05:37):
guys go back and forth and sort out what right
looks like and and not play too big a factor
in it, because you know, last night he posted that
Zelenski get in the water tomorrow. But he can by
holding up his hands and giving up his nation. But
that's not an answer that we've contributed too much to
to this to walk away. Plus it will inspire China
(06:00):
and the rest of him to become aggressive if this works.
Speaker 1 (06:02):
Yeah, Tom, thanks always good to have you on and
let's stay in touch on this because this one ain't
going away.
Speaker 3 (06:08):
Big day, Big day for you.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
The fingers crossed in the weeks, days, weeks and months
they had we not only Zelenski, but European leaders joining
him in Washington. Today, that's Colonel Tom Brewers.
