Speaker 1 (00:00):
We welcome Nebraska US Senator Deb Fisher back to the program
on a day which finds us less than a month
away from election day, and of course, early voting has
started in Nebraska.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Senator, good morning, Good morning Gary.
Speaker 1 (00:15):
Great to have you back, and you're in the state. Basically,
is the whole Congress off for October?
Speaker 2 (00:21):
Yes? Yeah, In an election year, usually both the House
and the Senate have October off.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
Man, Well, how does that work if you have things
that are urgent and you actually need to get done.
I know everybody works remotely, but can the Congress do
that if it comes to that, No, we'd.
Speaker 2 (00:42):
Be called back in the Senate. Even even during COVID,
the Senate, we had to be present in the Senate
to be able to vote. I know the House had
proxy voting for members, but in the Senate we all
had to be there during COVID when we weren't session.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
Okay, I understand you have some new polling out this
morning on your race with Dan Osborne. Right, we do, we.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
Do, and I'm pleased with the polling. It shows that
it's a forty eight to forty two race. As you know,
I don't ever take anything for granted. I take this
race very seriously. But Nebraska is a conservative state and
I have a long, solid conservative record, So I knew
(01:31):
that if if we could get out there and be
able to define my opponent, that Nebraskans weren't going to
be fooled by this whole independent post that he's got there.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
I'm not familiar with Torchlight strategy, as the poster as
John Rogers. Is this an independent outfit?
Speaker 2 (01:55):
Yes, yeah, it's an independent polling that we viewed it.
It's always been right on for us in the past,
and you know, I feel good about it. He's a
respected pollster, and he releases the entire poll so it
(02:15):
can be analyzed instead of just saying, gee, here are
the numbers. The whole polls released so people can go
through it and see who was polled, how many how
many Republicans, Democrats, Independents, that type of thing, the age breakdowns, everything.
So this is this is a reliable poll. But like
(02:38):
I said, we're not taking up for granted, going to
continue to be out there meeting with people, really putting
on the miles and doing lots of interviews as well.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
You know, Jim and I have talked about this quite
a bit over the past couple of weeks, in particular
when the race seemed to be tightening. And basically, and
according to some surveys, we've talked about how there is
a streak in Nebraska and I kind of like it
in a way of populism. And and Dan Osborne has
(03:11):
obviously a ton of money behind some very well produced
ads that cast him as this just down there, a
blue collar guy, and here you are. You've become a
tillionaire in the US Senate and seem to get some
traction from that. Can you address what he claims is
your vast wealth now as a US senator compared to
(03:33):
when you started in the Senate?
Speaker 2 (03:36):
You know, I think I think Nebraska's understand that in
my family's gone through some reorganization on on our ranch.
People in Nebraska know that in agriculture, your wealth in
your family operation. Also, I lost my mother recently. I
(04:01):
lost an aunt a few years ago as well, who
had no children. So you know, things things change. But
people get that wealth in land is different than being
able to have wealth in the bank.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
If you have unrealized gains common little attacks that incidentally,
uh well, you.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
Know, in a in a in a ranch family and
a caw cop operation. There aren't too many unrealized games.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
I want to We have a loyal listener who is
h who is Chippy. He's he's he has TDS, but
he listens a lot and emails him. I appreciate him listening.
And he wants to know why you, as a woman,
support Donald Trump. Trump and arrangement syndrome. And he wants
(04:56):
to know why a woman would support Donald Trump.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
Very simple reason. When Donald Trump was president, the people
in this country had more money in their pocket, and
I can assure you that our country was much much safer.
Speaker 1 (05:15):
That is basically the message, I think, and the economic message,
and the border message and all of that that Trump
is continuing to pound. Let's talk before we have to
go here about what's going on between Israel and it's
surrounded by its enemies and it promises a response to
Iran's missile attack on Israel and they said it will
be a surprise and it'll be deadly. And I know
(05:38):
you have some classified briefings as a member of a
key committee. What can you tell us about what's happening there?
And how concerned should we be about a possibly burgeoning
regional conflict.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
Well, first off, I believe Israel has to do what
they need to do to keep their country and their
people safe. And I also believe that they're doing our
job for us by by going after these terrorists, whether
it's Hamas, whether it's Hesbloh, whether it's the Huthis and Yemen.
(06:13):
And also they were attacked by Iran, and that Iran
is the top state sponsor of terrorism. All these groups
are proxies of Iran. Every time we see the Biden
administration or before that, the Obama administration, when they would
I would say, appease Iran and unfreeze the funds, they
(06:37):
relieve the sanctions, and all we would see is that
Iran would become more and more aggressive. But Democrats keep
at it. Time after time, they keep at it. So
I think it's it's we need to all realize how
high the stakes are right now. And I believe that
Israel is moving forward on its own path. They're doing
(07:01):
what needs to be done. I certainly hope there's not
any kind of huge escalation there, but you cannot bow
to terrorists.
Speaker 1 (07:11):
Yeah, I frankly don't understand why our message and by
our I mean our unified message as a government would
not be to tell Israel you do what you need
to do. There are closes arguably our closest friend in
the world.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
Yeah, I mean, you know, just think if if the
Biden administration had provided what Israel had had asked for
early on, so that they could defeat the terrorists, defeat Iran,
defeat their proxies right after October seventh, just think this
could this could be over by now. But instead the
(07:48):
Biden administration kept insisting on cease fires. They kept insisting
that they had to get in there and negotiate with terrorists.
And so it's been over a year now.
Speaker 1 (07:59):
Are you aware of any movement in the effort to
get our hostage, our Americans back our hostages.
Speaker 2 (08:05):
I know that obviously it's public information that Israel has
made it very clear that they will get their hostages back,
and that includes the Americans that are there. I would
say publicly that I hope the United States is involved
in that because we still have hostages there as well.
Speaker 1 (08:28):
Always good to have you on, Senator, Thanks for the
time this morning.
Speaker 2 (08:31):
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (08:32):
That's Senator Deb Fisher here on kfab's Morning News. And
again in case you didn't know I had reached out
earlier in the week two. The Osborne campaign have not
heard back yet.
