Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good to have the gov back with us. We welcome
back to the program. Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen calling undoubtedly
from the Lincoln Cracker barrel. Good morning.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Actually I'm not in the country, so it's truly really good.
It's a beautiful morning in Nebraska. Good morning, guys.

Speaker 1 (00:17):
Make sure is I wanted to get some clarity if
we can, Governor on the corn Husker clink and I
guess if we can argue, let's not call. Well that's
what it's called, that's not real. But I've heard conflicting reports.
Who are to be the people detained there. I've heard
everything from the worst of the worst to criminals to

(00:37):
regular people who violation is that they are here illegally.
Do you know for sure?

Speaker 2 (00:43):
Yeah, Well, for this participation in supporting ICE has absolutely
nothing to do with immigration. Do not support to anybody
being there that are have been living here working for
the last ten and twenty years. It's really important that
everybody understands what we are doing is we are supporting

(01:05):
the ICE programs so that we can get the criminals off.
I say it all the time. If every Nebraskan could
have been with me when I was down supporting Governor
Abbott with the border. When we had troops down two
different times, there was nothing but extraordinary amounts of synthetic
meth amphetamines from China that we're crossing the border. Fentanyl.

(01:28):
The cartels are an extraordinary sophisticated group. So who's going
to be So we have to get these criminals off
the streets. There were floods of them that came across.
So those are criminals and terrorists that are doing drug trafficking,
sex trafficking and are trying to ruin and destroy our communities.
There's been the goal is to highest calling of government

(01:51):
is keep us safe. I don't think anybody disagrees with that.
Who will be housed there are what are called low
to mediumminals. These are not murders. These are not the
M thirteen cat that I'm proud that all that was
arrested in Omaha and Council Bluffs a month five weeks ago.

(02:12):
These will be folks that have done trafficking, drug trafficking,
sex trafficking and are not here legally. They are illegal
aliens that are criminals and we need to get them
off the street. That's what the focus is. I have
told we've got the National Guard. We have twenty troops

(02:34):
that have volunteered to be administrative supporters of ICE. I
have told them very clear that the mission. I met
with them last week. I said they all volunteered. We
talked about their why, and I said, it's really important
for everybody to understand the mission. The mission is about safety.
If anyone hears a word from ICE about deportation of

(02:55):
folks that have been living here, I want to know,
and I want to know within the out this is
about safety. And these will be low to medium criminals
for the safety all the folks that McCook. I've been
there two different times. It's really simple. No one will
know the difference the security of that facility. It will

(03:15):
continue to be run by the state. It will continue
to be run by the same people that have been
working there for years. They're trained. This facility is an
accredited facility, unlike anything else that ICE has in the
United States, including the Alcatraz and including what the governor
in Indiana has been talking about. So we'll be operational

(03:37):
in forty five days. Really proud of Rob Jeffries, our
director of Corrections, and his team. They're doing great work
and we're doing our fair share.

Speaker 3 (03:46):
Okay, A couple of things. One, how firm is the
legal ground on which you stand, because it says in
the Constitution the legislature decides on penal issues.

Speaker 2 (03:57):
You know, we don't live in a whole. We've worked
with the Attorney General's Office and we've we've covered that
that's that that uh T is crossed and that I
has dotted one hundred percent. Obviously somebody will suiciver, but
that's okay. We all have our rights and we're we're
we're rock solid. The pillar goes down und feed.

Speaker 3 (04:17):
Same same thing with lawyers on Red Willow County because apparently,
according to at least one federal court, these people have
due process. Do we have enough lawyers in Red Willow
County to talk to these people if they ask for them.

Speaker 2 (04:32):
This will not be This will not be a county issue.
This will be federal. So every every criminal that is
detained in the facility before they are deported to their country,
they will have due process that will take place via
zoom and that will be done with federal judges. I've
met with. I've met with a county attorney pledged to

(04:54):
assured him that that his process won't be any different. Uh,
And I've sure the county attorney and the mayor that
if there is anything that comes up unexpected that incurs
the cost, we the state will cover.

Speaker 1 (05:07):
Governor, a couple of petitions are going to be circulating
out there to try to get on the ballot real
property tax relief. One of them would basically cut property
taxes in half. Are you supportive of these measures?

Speaker 2 (05:20):
Well, I'm certainly supportive. We've been working from day one
that we have to have transformative tax policy change in
this state. Our property taxes, I mean, it's unbelievable. When
we walked into the Governor's office, property taxes were going
up almost a million dollars a day. We've been able

(05:41):
to cut that, We've been able to stop that, but
we still have to so we have to get down
in the forty percent change. You know, I was with
Governors South Dakota and Iowa yesterday, same issue. We have
to get better with property taxes. You know, the message
is really really clear that people are the second body

(06:01):
of the House. It's time. We've been working very hard.
We had one session where we had a couple ideological,
idealistic senators that say, A sales tax is a tax increase.
They've been duped sales tax. We have to broaden the
sales tax. We have to do exactly like what we

(06:22):
did with our community colleges where the state funds it.
We have to get property taxes under control. We've got
a plan. It's really simple. We need to have thirty
three senators come together, come together and get it done.
The people have to speak, and you know, we don't
get it done. You know, petition might be the way

(06:43):
the people speak. I think this will get everybody's attention.
It's time to come together, get on a team and
get this solved for the people in their brass.

Speaker 3 (06:52):
Well one other thing, though, Gov, are you are you
concerned that these competing initiatives might confuse the electorate? Such
nothing happens because the epic tax people are circulating petitions again.
And now these two petitions, which are actually two. One
is to have the valuation amount for school taxes and

(07:12):
the other one has to do with capping valuations. Could
it confuse the electorate?

Speaker 1 (07:17):
Well?

Speaker 3 (07:17):
How can which one? Will you put your shoulder behind?

Speaker 2 (07:20):
Yeah, there's no question they will confuse the electorate. That's
why it's really urgent. If the Unit camel, if the
members of the Unicameral aren't paying attention and saying, oh boy,
it's time we do our job. It's time we quit
listening to the special interest groups. It's time we listen
to the people. It's crystal clear from the special session

(07:43):
last year, eighty four percent of Nebrawskans are saying please please.
I was out at state Fair. Every other person, I
introduced myself and we talked, thank you for not giving
up on property text. It's time the Unit Cameral comes together,
get rid of all of the ideology viewpoints. Let's come together,

(08:04):
broadened sales, tax base, solve this problem and move on
so we can grow this incredible state.

Speaker 1 (08:11):
Aymen, before we go Husker Cincinnati, this is a three
foot guy.

Speaker 2 (08:17):
Come on, you know, hey, you know, I tell you
what I had an extraordinary privileged coach. Rule asked if
he said the captains and the single digits wanted to
have a picture. I got to have a picture with
the kids yesterday morning. Let me tell Nebraskans number one,
These ten eleven men are extraordinary, high character men. They

(08:39):
have incredible depth, they're great looking athletes, and they got
each other's back. It was so cool to look them
in the eye and get a visit. It's back now.
Huskers are back. They have extraordinary belief and extraordinary discipline,
and they know that they've been through one hell of

(09:01):
a lot parter things. And what the game will be
Thursday night, Go Big Red.

Speaker 3 (09:05):
Do you know who's wearing number twenty nine? Yeah you should,
It's Carter Carter Nelson the tight les.

Speaker 2 (09:13):
Yeah. I do.

Speaker 3 (09:15):
Know that.

Speaker 2 (09:16):
I got to see Carter a couple of weeks ago
when the coach Roll brought him out to the governor summit.
And Carter Nelson's going to make twenty nine look really,
really good.

Speaker 1 (09:27):
Well he had, as you he doesn't have a lot
to live up to. Governor Jim Feller here on AB's
