Speaker 1 (00:00):
Oh my, Congressman Don Bacon after the House yesterday late
last evening defeated Plan B to get to get a
bill done to keep the government running.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Don, good morning, Good morning, it's going to be talking
to you.

Speaker 1 (00:15):
You, you two, you and Mike Flood and Adrian Smith
all voted for this one. So where do we go
from here?

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Well, the speakers in the office right now trying to
come up with some kind of compromise. Here's the problem
for the speaker. There's thirty to forty Republicans who will
never vote for containing resolution or raising a debt ceiling.
So of them don't mind if the government shut down,
but others would rather hope it doesn't shut down, but
they don't want to vote for it. But what that

(00:45):
does to the speakers. He can't get enough votes with Republicans,
so he has to work with the Democrats. And that's
what he tried to do on the first bill. You know,
there were some policy ones for both sides, but what
have you got to bipartisan vote? But that's the channel
on So if he doesn't have enough votes on the
Republican side, so he has to work with the Democrats,
and then then you get all the I would say,

(01:08):
some mister information, but you know, a lot of the
name calling on the first bill there and that was
the result of that. But he's going to have to
work with, you know, the minority leader in the Senate
to come up with something that everybody can agree on.
And the president he was all right with this first
bill after he studied it, but he wants a dead
ceiling race so he doesn't have to deal with it

(01:28):
in June when he's president. And that's sort of where
we're at. So I know they're they're in their office
right now discussing. You know, actually it's playing d D. Now, Well,
a fourth version.

Speaker 1 (01:41):
Is there any way in the world that the Democrats
will vote for a bill that includes raising the dead ceiling?

Speaker 2 (01:50):
Yeah, but it's got to look something like the first bill.

Speaker 1 (01:53):
They got to get a lot of they gotta get
they got to get a lot of stuff, extra stuff
on it. I see.

Speaker 2 (01:57):
Yeah. So the first bill was supposed to be a
clean cr but the Republicans of well, we need to
repunish the disaster money because of the hurricanes, and the
farm bill can't expire, so we extended the Farm bill
and then also we wanted the pharmacy benefit manage at
the PBM reforms was the lower of the pharmacy costs. Okay,
we're all right with that, but we want this bridge

(02:18):
partially funded in Maryland. This is how you got to
where we were at. And but's you know, unfortunately you
got divided government. There is give and take. It's just
a reality.

Speaker 1 (02:28):
Yeah, So what do you predict? I mean, everybody wants
to get out of there. Of course go home for Christmas.
That would be a bad look if there's no deal.
What do you think will happen today?

Speaker 2 (02:37):
I think cooler heads to prevail. We'll get something. But
it can't be I mean, we had the president the
president elect, so we got to get a bill that
has only Republican wins and no Democrat wins. Well, unfortunately
it doesn't work that way when the Democrats are on
the Senate and they have the White House right now.
So this is going to be some realism that there's
going to have to be a win win bill or

(02:58):
a totally clean dr without a dut ceiling increase. But
those are your options.

Speaker 1 (03:04):
Wow, some bad choices. I saw comments from some of
your colleagues in the Republican Caucus. Chip Roy prominent among
them from Texas. It sounds like there's no budge there.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
And it gets back to my point, there's thirty to
forty Republicans will never vote for a CR or DUT ceiling,
and it puts the speaker in a mind where he
has to work across the aisle if you want to
keep the government funded.

Speaker 3 (03:32):
I have a question for you, Congressman Don Bacon. Chip
Roy has been a mouthpiece for the Freedom Caucus and
for this very intense conservative a fiscal approach. When does
he assume leadership roles? When does he stop complaining and
start negotiating.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
I think that's just his personality style. He's a it's
easy to vote know and say no, and I don't
vote your conscience. I don't like how was demograq and
things were to demonized that we're not true in that
first bill, like he put out the Burgen getting pay
raise to two hundred and forty thousand dollars, that was

(04:09):
not true. He said there was protections for those who
served on the Pelosi Slut Committee so they couldn't have
their email search. So that was not true. Actually it
was the opposite. And so Elon Musk grabs onto some
of these falsehoods, puts them out and then and then
we're fighting this information battle. Thankfully President Trump. Yes, they
realized that chip Roy was wrong and putting out mis information.

(04:31):
So that's why he put out his tweets against Chaiproy yesterday.
And I think actually President Trump told us that he
would support that first bill after he reviewed it. They
also wanted the dut sealing rays. And so we're not
that far apart on getting something done here. But chip
Up unfortunately undermines the speaker of every stuff. And it'd
be one thing if you got a more conservative bil,

(04:51):
but what it does, it forces the speaker to have
to work across the aisle. It has the opposite effect
of what Chierproy was saying.

Speaker 1 (05:00):
Do me a favor, keep us in a loop today
as best you can. If you see some Yeah, I
appreciated Don Bacon, Congressman second District, Nebraska here on kfab's
Morning News. An interesting day ahead. Let's see if we
can make a little more sense out of this. Scott Kimbler,
twenty four to seven news correspondent joins us Scott, good morning.
We just chatted with Congressman Don Bacon. He's guardedly optimistic

(05:24):
that they can get some something done today. What's the
latest that you're.

Speaker 4 (05:29):
Hearing we could be finding out as soon as an
hour and a half from now. Speaker Johnson says it
could go to a vote that early. That they have
come up with a temporary fix. He was not too
detailed about that as of yet, but he did tell
reporters at the Capitol this morning just just a little

(05:50):
while ago, that they do expect that this could be
voted on by ten o'clock this morning. What had happened
last night Republicans thirty eight Republicans voted against the bill,
and all but two Democrats voted for it. The rest
of the Democrats voted against it. The Democrat side seemed

(06:12):
to be pretty upset. A lot of pork was cut
out of the bill, and they did not like that
they were really not negotiated with before that. The Plan
B kind of kind of came out of nowhere, and
the Democrats opted to oppose that because they weren't really
part of the planning and negotiating of it. That is

(06:35):
what they're saying. But again, both both parties are at
it this morning, and they, like I said, Speaker Johnson
says that this could go for a vote as early
as ten o'clock Eastern, which is just a little over
an hour and a half away. So the runway today
is of course much much shorter than it was yesterday.

(06:57):
If they don't get it done by midnight, we could
very well see that shutdown. And this is a shutdown
not only you know, facing a deadline going into the holidays,
but it's also the congressional break. They have to get
a lot done or a lot is not going to
get done until they come back.

Speaker 1 (07:14):
You think they'll leave. They want to get out of
there for Christmas. You think they'll leave even if there's
no deal.

Speaker 4 (07:20):
Uh, there's always that possibility. Not a lot of indicators
on which that'll go. But voting this early, that's a
positive time. I suppose that they may reach that deadline
and avoid a government shutdown, and that they are planning

(07:41):
to vote so early on it. This also gives them time.
If this vote doesn't pass, then they have more time
in the day to get it done than they did
last night.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
Ano they're men out here with Scott Kimber from twenty
four to seven News. Scott, this Amazon strike Amaha is
not one of the area. Now, we've got a huge
distribution center here. This is not one of the ones
mentioned in the news about workers having walked off. And
yet I think there may be a slowdown. I'm not
sure about that. I'm expecting a couple of things. And

(08:15):
I think yesterday it was the first day that nothing
showed up on the porch. So what can you tell
us about what's happening nationally with Amazon?

Speaker 4 (08:23):
Well, it's difficult to call it nationally. It is regionally
for sure, Atlanta, New York, San Francisco, in a couple
of areas of southern California.

Speaker 1 (08:36):
Did we lose Scott, Hello, Hello.

Speaker 4 (08:41):
Oh with a very large strike. Amazon is saying this
is the drivers and they are feeling that deliveries will
be okay. They don't expect to have too much of
an impact, according to the company.

Speaker 1 (08:54):
Okay. Interesting that there was one report that Amazon said
that we don't recock eyes the union, So.

Speaker 4 (09:04):
That would be true as a whole. They are unionized,
that some areas they're not unionized nationwide, like say the
auto workers would be. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (09:14):
Man, what a piece of timing for that, Scott, Thank you,
