Speaker 1 (00:00):
More election.

Speaker 2 (00:00):
Yeah, how far Brian has been. You know, he was
on pretty much or almost every day with us leading
up to the big twenty twenty four election and has
been sleeping ever since to catch up.

Speaker 1 (00:11):
So thread that came out of hybrid.

Speaker 3 (00:13):
Yeah, Gary, we got a.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Big one out in Millard, big school bond issue, Brian,
And you're sending ballots out. This is mail and only, right,
that's right.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
So the law allows for special elections to be by
mail only. So it's about eighty thousand voters, about sixty
four thousand, five hundred and Douglas and about fifteen thousand,
five hundred Sarpy. We mailed ballots yesterday. So the big
thing that voters need to know is, since this is
a by mail election, you will do the voter ID

(00:46):
component on the back of the ballot envelope when you
return it again. The easiest way just right down your
Nebraska driver's license or state ID on the back. There
there's a flap that you seal it covers it up,
sign the back of it. You're good to go. We
know ninety seven or ninety eight percent of all Nebraskans

(01:07):
have the state ID or driver's license. If you got
questions caller office at four four vote and we'll help you.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
Yeah, one hundred and fifty eight million dollar public schools
bond issue there in Millard. And then here comes Brian.
The city election primary in April and then the general
in May. And this is going to be a contentious
one for the mayor's seat. Particularly what do Amahans need
to know?

Speaker 1 (01:33):
Yeah, So one of the nice things about this election
is if you like to vote by mail and you
request been early voting by mail by March twenty first
at six pm, which is the deadline for the primary.
The law allows for one request for both elections. So

(01:54):
if you return your green card to us, which we
mailed out today about a one hundred and thirty thousand
of those, if you return that green card by March
twenty first, six pm, you will get about mailedq for
both the primary and the general election.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
Okay, I think, and I don't know, it's not an
exact science by any means, but is your sense, Brian
like mind that this one is going to be a
bigger than normal turnout for a city election.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
Absolutely, I think there's no question about it. You know,
we've got you know, I think seven folks or maybe
even eight, at least seven have taken out petitions to
run for mayor. Of course, we've seen, you know, some
media already on this, and there's no question there's some
great candidates out there, some visible candidates, and I think

(02:49):
that will definitely drive out turnout up in both the
primary and the general, which is good. Keep in mind,
this is a polling place election, so you can go
to your polling place, or you can request about it
by mail, or come to our office and vote in person.
It's just like last fall.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
Right now, the sad news came that we lost Walt
Peffer as a Douglas County Assessor and register of deeds,
and Jim and I were wondering aloud on the area yesterday. Brian,
I'm sure you know what's the procedure to replace a
county officeholder?

Speaker 1 (03:23):
Yeah, you know. So first I'd just like to say
what was a friend and official and so you know,
he served the citizens of Omahon Douglas County for many,
many decades and we're better for that. And two and
his entire family are in my thoughts and prayers, of course,
but yes, so moving forward, in this case, it was

(03:46):
a county official. So therefore the county Board will appoint
a successor who will finish out his turn.

Speaker 2 (03:57):
Okay. And then so let's see, Walt was electing twenty two,
wasn't it, so as the next year, that's.

Speaker 1 (04:04):
Right, Okay, So the successor will go through twenty six
and then it'll be on the ballot.

Speaker 2 (04:10):
And that's an important that's a big gig. That's an
important gig. So I wonder.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
Yeah, I'm not sure what the process will be to
replace him. That'll be up to the board to determine that.
But it will be an appointment by the board.

Speaker 3 (04:26):
I'm sure they'll take applications and then interview them. It'll
be highly political. Maybe we'll get a county board member
on May get pj or Chris Rogers, is somebody on
talk about it the county board. This is an important job.
Something you don't see there.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
You don't want. You don't want that job. You don't
think you want that not without but some big will
step up that legislative change.

Speaker 3 (04:46):
You shouldn't want that job.

Speaker 2 (04:47):
Hey, Brian, thanks right.

Speaker 1 (04:48):
Now, there is a requirement you do have to have
a certificate to hold that office. So you know there
is a requirement there to hold that office.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
I have.

Speaker 3 (04:59):
A certificate of what.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
I have an FCC first Class license.

Speaker 3 (05:03):
Certificate to get into David Busters.

Speaker 1 (05:07):
It's in the state statute. I don't know exactly, but
it's something to do with real estate or assessors. But
there's a particular certificate you.

Speaker 2 (05:15):
Have to have. Okay, great, Brian, good to talk to
you again. Thanks my friend.

Speaker 1 (05:20):
Okay, thank you guys. Have a great day and happy
elections coming here too.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
Onward. That's Brian Cruz, Douglas County Election Commissioner. So look
for those ballots and the mail today off here in
the Millard School District and the green cards coming for
citizens of the City of Omaha if you want a
mail in ballots
