Speaker 1 (00:00):
Sports Brief Special Husker Buzz with Sean Callahan Livin like
a Rosie.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
Well, Seana, we got two things that happened on the
same day. Talk a little bit about Trey Taylor, the
quarterback from Chicago class of twenty twenty seven. We're twenty
months from the time he can sign, so I don't
know that it's a pressing thing, and a lot can
happen in twenty months. In addition to Nebraska solidifying the commitment,
other schools can come in with a bigger bid. But

(00:25):
what makes this guy good as a sophomore.

Speaker 3 (00:27):
Well, he's arguably the number one player in the state
of Illinois. I mean, when you add up one service,
Rivals has him number one, we have them three. The
consensus rating on him his number two. They can say
he's a number three QB in the country overall, and
he's a number forty overall player. So you know, as

(00:48):
far as he's knocked on the door of being a
five star player, he's a big time recruit. Arguably the
top player in the city of Chicago. So to get
somebody like this early you kind of lock down your
quarterback picture for the future. You've got Dylan Ryola obviously
t Jala, Tief Dayton, Riola, and now Trey Taylor. And

(01:08):
here we are only in twenty twenty five, so they've
they've done a great job. And I think it also
probably takes a little pressure off locally. You know, there's
a couple of good local quarterbacks here this year, Jet
tamalag going to Iowa State, and then Braylan Warren, who's
who's going to be a highly ranked three star, maybe
a four star. But if you're Matt Rule, you don't
have to deal with that local pressure, like, yeah, we

(01:29):
unfortunately we got a guy. And you can see that
kind of brewing as the attention on these two local
quarterbacks drums up. But they're pretty specific of what they're
looking for. And I mean, Trey Taylor is nearly six three,
one ninety and he's a big time addition as highly
ranked of a quarterback as you're going to get at Nebraska.

Speaker 2 (01:48):
All right, So that we go to the kicker. Kyle
Kananan was very accomplished at Charlotte and then he transferred
to cal at the end of last season University of California,
Strawberry Canyon and is there through spring practice. But suddenly
goes into the portal and comes here. Why did he
leave Cal?

Speaker 3 (02:07):
Yeah, I talked to Kyle f last night in the
eleven o'clock hour. He signed his paperwork at ten thirty
to kind of give you an idea how fresh this is.
He was in Lincoln for his official visit. But Kyle
Kunanan left CAL because when he got there, you know,
he was led to believe that he would be able
to major in construction management. That's an important deal for him.

(02:29):
And then when he got there, he was not able
to for whatever reason, and it might have to do
with the college there, the scheduling of the classes, don't
I don't know the specific reason why he was not
allowed to. But Nebraska, as you know, has that's one
of their top programs as well. But he won the
portal to see what's out there. Brett Maher and Mike Eckler,
you know, reached out to him and talked to him,

(02:51):
and they're really high on him. And the biggest thing
he brings to the table is he's a consistent ball striker.
And look Elvano and Hole. They can hit from long
distance fifty five sixty yards, but they have not been
at times consistent ball strikers, and Brett Mahert told Cananan this, like, hey,

(03:12):
when you kick here, the wind is so strong that
you have to be a ball striker to cut the
ball through the wind and not have your ball affected.
And they see that with Conanan. He is a scholarship edition.
So he I mean, there he's gonna have to come
in and win a competition. But you know they're they're
bringing him in for a reason. You don't just do
this to add depth. I mean, I think they see

(03:33):
something in him that if if it plays out, he's
probably your kicker because of his consistency from forty five
yards on end how he strikes the ball.

Speaker 1 (03:42):
So his range is not quite up there. But but
they could use those guys for the long.

Speaker 3 (03:47):
Range ones, right, Yeah, you're right, I mean maybe over
fifty yards. I think Conanan has only tempted one over
fifty yards.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
Well, that's an interesting paradigm. You've got two kids that
that are Nebraska kickers, that are big ten kickers. Your
level of success is arguable, and now you're bringing in
a guy who's never kicked in the wind. You don't
see a lot of win in Charlotte, North Carolina, and
he didn't kick at all at Cal just in the

(04:17):
spring is all. So we'll see how he responds to that.
But what about the punter situation. Honestly seems to me
that would be more of an acute issue sean getting
a punter in here.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
They have their guy they he hasn't signed yet. It's
it's an Australian, one of the aufsie kickers, and those
guys can kick left and right foot and and also
traditionally Tory Taylor, the great Iowall punter now at the Bears,
he was an Aussie. I mean, that's the style they're
going to go with, and you know, Eckler wants to
bring that to the table and we'll kind of see

(04:52):
where this develops. But yeah, they have somebody in mind,
it just hasn't he hasn't signed. And when they sign,
it hits pretty quickly. You know last night that he signed.
This kid signed his canan and sign at ten thirty
and it hit the portal system right at ten thirty
last night. So I'd imagine it's going to be something
similar as far as how this plays out with the

(05:13):
Aussie they bring in and end up signing here.

Speaker 1 (05:17):
You're all over it. And that's why you're on the
big Red Radio. Thank you, ab Sean, Thanks man Sean
