Speaker 1 (00:00):
Joined now for a few minutes by Nebraska US Senator
Pete Reckitts, who's in the middle of a good morning.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Senator, good morning, thanks for having me on.
Speaker 1 (00:09):
You bet it sounds like nobody's giving an nch officially.
But of the people in the Congress and elsewhere who
I've heard way in on this, they don't believe it's
going to last long. What's your view, Well, I.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
Hope not, because the Democrats are completely in the wrong here.
I mean, it's just a completely hypocritical stance are taking.
I heard just what Nut said, and Newt's right, but
you know, the kicker is here. The thing that we're
asking to vote on is this continuing resolution. They have
all all voted on this four times already, this exact
same budget four times in the last eighteen months. They've
(00:46):
all almost thought like between ninety eight one hundred percent
of them I said yes to this already four times,
including Chuck Schumer who voted for it every single time.
They've all voted for it, and now they're not voting
for it because Trump's in office. It's just particular.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
Have the Democrat or have the Republicans rather ever had
a better message on a shutdown than they have right now.
I mean this has got I.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
Have well I can say, well, I haven't been here,
that wrong. But you know, the message of how hypocratic,
you know, like the the Democrats are being is just stunning.
Just like, let me just read your quote that Chuck
Schumer said back in a different shutdown scenario. He said,
what if I persuaded my caucus to say I'm going
to shut the government down, I'm going to not pay
(01:33):
our bills unless I get my way. It's a politics
of idiocy, of concentration, of paralysis. It's like Chuck, you
said that before. Why is this different? And the difference
is it's not you are to vote on this bill.
You just need to keep the government open so we
continue to work on our appropriations bills. It's just ridiculous.
Speaker 3 (01:52):
Okay, there's a crack in the big blue wall. King
who's an independent, but it's caucused with the Democrats. He says,
we got a asked this Jeane Shaheen, who's not running
for reelection Democrat of New Hampshire. We've got to pass this.
And then Senator Maestro from Nevada says the same thing,
and Fetterman and Fetterman. So that's four. Now, are there
(02:12):
any others that are ready to jump the camp and
particularly Gary Peters and Tina Smith Pete who are not
running for reelection, they don't need Chuck Schumer for anything.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
Yeah, that really is what's going on here, is that
Chuck Schumer is driven all by his personal politics here, right.
You know, the whole speculation is he's worried about AOC
running against him or some other extreme lefty in his primary.
And so most I gotta tell you, my belief is
most Democrats actually don't want to see the government shut down.
I mean, most farmers want to grow government. And you know,
(02:44):
so I've not talked to any of those owner centers,
I don't know, but we can see in the vote,
you know, the vote we took this week that Catherine
Puts Mastro, John Fetterman, and Angus King all voted with
Republicans to try and keep government open. So we just
need to get a few more to flip and then
we can get government back open and continue to work
on these appropriation bills, which is really what we should
(03:06):
be doing. We should we pass appropriations bills, not continuing resolutions.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
What is really what is really the lever for leadership
in this case, Schumer uses because I know that there
are reasonable what you might call moderate Democrats who don't
want any part of this. What is the leverage he
has over them?
Speaker 2 (03:26):
Well, the rules that the Democrats set up give him
a lot more power than the rules we as Republicans
set up. I mean not shocking, right, that we're much
more decentralized. We don't give our you know that we're
our rules are such that our leader can't kick us
off committees, Willy Neely kind of stuff. Truck's got a
lot more power over his caucus than our leaders have
over ours. And that's part of what they're they're afraid of, right,
(03:48):
and they don't think two is And again I'm not
in the caucus, but I've heard that typically it's also
self enforcing that you've got other members that may also
believe that can get on helping the grill of members
who maybe just want to keep the government open and
not shut it down.
Speaker 3 (04:05):
Okay, so you need like four more see what Ran
Paul does. But Pete Tammy, Duckworth and Dick Durban are
big Cubs fans. So it seems to me that you
can go to them and say, look, in exchange for
a vote on this one, I'll get you behind home
plate for the National League Division Series. Now that, of
(04:26):
course assumes that the Cubs are winning over San Diego tonight.
But if you leverage the Cubs with these people yet,
you know what.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
Rosie, that is a strategy I have not tried yet.
I have to take that into consideration.
Speaker 3 (04:38):
Well, there's no way that the only seats that Tammy
Duckworth and Dick Turbin are getting are on the building
across the street. There's no way that they'll be allowed
in the building without your help.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
Yeah, absolutely, I mean, you guys home the place.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
You can keep them. I'll just put a giant picture
of the size of Mount sat Tung out there by
the front gate with Tammy and Dick and say not
allowed unless thing in exchange.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
For the vote.
Speaker 3 (05:02):
Man, you got to use everything in your toolbox.
Speaker 1 (05:04):
Man, what's the next what's the next senator records with
us right on the what's the next action there on
this deal?
Speaker 2 (05:12):
Today, Republicans have done our job. We voted to keep
government open. We're going to continue to put votes on
the floor to keep government open. And the Democrats are
gonna have to keep voting it down, and at some
point they'll realize the hypocrisy their position, because they've all
voted for this, all right. Like I said, the reing
of the Biden administration, Democrats voted for continuing resolutions thirteen
times and this exact bill four times, so they really
(05:35):
don't have a leg to stand on this. So they
just We're just going to keep giving them chances to
keep it open, and I think that at some point
they'll realize the foolishness of their position and we'll get
enough votes to pass the CR and keep working on
appropriations processing bills.
Speaker 1 (05:52):
Very good, Senator, Thanks appreciate the time as always.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
All right, my pleasure to thank you.
Speaker 1 (05:56):
Having good luck today. That's Nebraska US Senator Pete Record
