Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcoming Don kleinback to the program. Douglas County Attorney Don
good morning.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
Good morning.

Speaker 1 (00:05):
I wanted to get more to the extent that you
can fill us in on a big story last week,
the arrest of five and at sex trafficking operation. And yeah,
I understand the one of whom is a City of
Omaha employee. I understand the investigation.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Is not over yet, right, that's right. I mean, you know,
this has been something that's been worked on for months
by the Omaha Police Department, and we were involved for
the last couple of months developing the charges so that
we could make the arrests on Thursday, and there was

(00:42):
quite a few made, and then there were also search
warrants which were involved, many search warrants to gather evidence.
And in any of these kinds of cases, normally, the
there's investigation that continues and sometimes it leads to more
arrests or more people involved. And I would encourage anybody

(01:03):
that was, you know, part of this in any way,
as a victim or in any manner to come forward. Now,
sometimes people won't come forward until they know somebody's in
custody because they're afraid, and so I would hope that
anybody that that has any information or was somehow tangentially

(01:27):
involved in this would come forward and we'll have more
to follow. I guess would be the words.

Speaker 1 (01:34):
I know everybody I would think as disgusted by this
and what was going on allegedly. Can you talk about
the victims? Were these were these young people who were
transient or what was the nature of their background?

Speaker 2 (01:52):
Glad to say that there were miners. There were miners
involved who were trafficked, who were pulled into this sex ringing,
this commercial sex operation for money. So at least we've
got some at this point, and we'll see if there's
others involved or we're forced to do this kind of work.

(02:15):
But yeah, it's disgusting. We can't have this in Omaha.
We'd like to think that this couldn't happen in Omaha,
but unfortunately we've got more than one case that's happened.
We had the American in case there on Thirteenth Street
down by the Zoo, and we work together with the
Omaha Police, the FBI, our US Attorney's House were our

(02:36):
federal partners, and we usually figure out where the best
way to go, best forum is for the prosecution of
these cases. And so fortunately here in Omaha we have
a good, good teamwork with all of our law enforcement
agencies and prosecution agencies.

Speaker 3 (02:53):
So we'll continue that there are only so much there's
only so much resource out there for law enforcement in
this area. But I would think that this is a
problem that's growing far faster than the resources that you
have to keep up with it. And you know, you
can't cover everything, but by comparison, you know, when you
start talking about vice squad and these kinds of sex

(03:16):
related prostitution and so forth, so on and so forth
cases everything gets kicked to the side in light of
this growing problem of sex trafficking, especially young people.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
Absolutely, I mean we have there, there are so many
hours that were put into this case already and then
putting it together. We have a we now have one
of my prosecutors who were along with some others, are
dedicated to these kinds of cases. And because it takes
a lot of work, it takes a lot of evidence
to put this together and have successful prosecution, because that's

(03:51):
the end result that we want. But the police to
the heck of a job putting this together and getting
these arrest made, and.

Speaker 3 (03:59):
They're only so many officers out there, and there's only
so many folks on the streets doing this, and it
seems like it's happening more and more all the time.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
Well, it's it's you know, we've had cases before that
were human trafficking cases, but they weren't really called that,
where individuals were having sex with young or runaway girls
or or they were holding them hostage and effect, and

(04:30):
we ended up charging those as sexual assaults or harboring
or false imprisonment or those kinds of things. But now
that we have these better laws on sex trafficking, it's
it's very helpful, very helpful.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
Talking not just for another minute here with Douglas County
Attorney Don climb Down. What are what are the most
egregious charges and if there are convictions, how long could
these people be put away?

Speaker 2 (04:57):
Well, they're all charged with enough case is to put
them away for over one hundred years. The most serious
charges of being the trafficking sect trafficking of a minor,
which is a one I believe it's a one de
felony which carries a mandatory minimum up to fifty years
or life in prison. So those are the most serious charges.

(05:19):
So you know, We have some pretty serious allegations here
and a lot of time, and as as you saw,
the judge took it very seriously when we went to
the bond setting in the arrangement and set some very
high bonds, which we're very pleased with.

Speaker 1 (05:33):
Yeah, good deal. We'll go again, and I hope if
there are more that that that'll be coming soon. Don Klin,
thanks so much. Always good to have you on. Don
appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (05:44):
You Beck, good morning,
