Speaker 1 (00:00):
Twenty four to seven News National correspondent Rory O'Neil due
to program on a couple of items.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
Rory, good morning, Hey, good morning Gary.

Speaker 1 (00:07):
So how's the shutdown going to affect us?

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Well, look, if this only goes on for a couple
of days, you probably won't notice. You got your Social
Security money overnight. Probably direct deposited. Medicare and Medicaid are running.
The VA hospitals are open, there is mail delivery service
as usual. But if this starts to drag on and
there are more workers who aren't getting paid, like at
the TSA and air traffic controllers, you know, they start

(00:33):
taking sick days and not showing up the work because
they're not getting paid, and then suddenly you've got trouble
in transportation. Actually, it was that issue that sort of
brought an end to the last shutdown seven years ago
after thirty five days.

Speaker 1 (00:49):
Right, it really annoys me that our active service members
are not getting paid. That's wrong, that's offensive.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
Yeah, thinks it has a way to. It has the money,
so they get paid on the first and fifteenth, So
they got paid today. But whether or not, the Pentagon
thinks they can shuffle some money around to make it
happen for the fifteenth, but that's not guaranteed.

Speaker 1 (01:12):
Okay, So for a lot of these agencies, it's what
do they have already on hand that they can use, right, right,
But if they don't have it, then tough luck. It's
just wrong. It's just wrong, all right.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
Now.

Speaker 1 (01:24):
The President is he's kind of back and forth on this,
but there is a distinct possibility that he'll be deploying
troops to major American cities where they're overrun with crime.
What's the latest on that.

Speaker 2 (01:40):
Yeah, there are three main cities that are the focus. Portland, Oregon, Memphis, Tennessee,
and Chicago, Illinois. Chicago is the biggest fight because he's
got the governor and the mayor who are standing up
against him trying to stop it. In Portland, he's authorized
one hundred troops to get ready to deploy there. But
we heard from the police chief who said, look, I've
got to one hundred and forty five square miles of city.

(02:02):
There's an issue outside one block where the ice facility is,
and yeah, it had a flare up in June and
some cars were burned. But he says, we're on top
of it. We don't need the National Guard. Memphis is
where things are a bit more complicated. Some federal agencies
already deploying. The Attorney General saying two hundred and nineteen
officers have been special deputized. Not sure what that means,

(02:23):
but she touted that the two hundred and nineteen deputies
made nine arrests and seized two illegal firearms.

Speaker 1 (02:30):
Yeah, well, it's two different animals, Chicago and Memphis. Like
Memphis for example, Look, every excuse me, every city it
has places where you know you need to avoid. Memphis
is most of Memphis. There's basically in Memphis, from my experience,
a small area where you can go ahead and walk

(02:52):
around the rest of it is. Now, that's where deploying
troops I think could be helpful in the same way
that it was in Washington.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
Well, and that's one of the questions, because it's not
as dense as DC. It's much more spread out, you know,
and these troops can't do law enforcement work in some cases,
you know, they don't even have guns. So are they
there just for show? And because it's not as concentrated,
that show of force may not be felt as much.
If it's just one hundred guys spread across a very

(03:23):
large area. So yeah, I'm not sure how effective they'll be.
It does help in that. Look, if the guard is
patrolling the National Mall in the area around Union Station
and d C, well then that frees up police to
go to the more trouble neighborhoods. But yeah, I'm not
sure it can work like that with Memphis. But that's
the coordination that you want to see at the local, state,
and federal levels.

Speaker 1 (03:44):
Well, it's interesting. It's interesting that the Chicago mayor says, look,
we just got a problem over here at the ice facilliny.
We got that under control. Like he's totally ignoring the
south side right.

Speaker 3 (03:55):
Well, and Fox has had tape of actual shit hoglans
who when they encounter these these new folks say thank
you for being here. You know, I feel safe finally
with you here troops, American troops. So they may be
they may the left may be giving us JB. Pritzker

(04:16):
and Brandon Johnson the mayor, but other outlets are actually
interviewing people who don't have a security detail around them
like they do.

Speaker 1 (04:26):
All right, Rory, Thanks Rory O'Neil, twenty four to seven
News National correspondent uh So we'll see on this government
shutdown deal. As he says, if it's a couple of days,
no big whoop, but drags on, then you got other
issues you got to worry about. I I don't know.
This is a little different, I think, Rosie, because you've

(04:49):
got a minority leader Schumer, who's not only crazy to
begin with, but now he's worried about alienating anybody in
his base. Part is purely political, so his his motivation
and negotiators

Speaker 3 (05:04):
Neil, the only hope they have are define senators that
aren't running for re election on the Democrat side, and
so far they found a couple

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
