Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good election day, whether orday is you head out there
to vote starting in about twenty five minutes, and we're
joined here for a few minutes on kfab's Morning News
by State Senator Kathleen kalf Omaha Area District thirty one. Kathleen,
good morning, Good.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
Morning, Jerry and Jim. How are you guys?

Speaker 1 (00:17):
Well, great to have you back, and you're We've talked
with you before about this issue, going back to last
session and now this session with were stand with Women
Act having to do with with gender issues and sports
and spaces and all of that. Now that's coming up
for another session in the legislature tomorrow night, right, correct.

Speaker 2 (00:39):
That will be on select file tomorrow night.

Speaker 1 (00:41):
What does that mean? It's select file? What does that mean?

Speaker 2 (00:44):
So select file is our second round. We start with
general file. That's usually an eight hour debate. It usually
goes eight four to two, so general, Select, and then
final reading for this bill. It was labeled divisive, so
it cuts the debate time in half, which mostly because
everybody pretty much knows where they stand on it. This
is a third year we've discussed it. This is it

(01:06):
makes it tricky to do the debate press because there
are timing issues that we have taken into consideration. But
this will be on select file tomorrow night.

Speaker 1 (01:15):
Right, and the boys and girls' restrooms and all of
that issue.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
Has correct and athletics, Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:22):
Yes, and that has been suggested as part of the
mayor's race. Then John Ewing has not answered the question directly,
and a lot of people are saying, well, it doesn't
really matter, it's a state or federal issue. You say
it is related.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
Right, absolutely, So you know, if the mayor of the
city decides to use gender identity as a way to
administer policy, that means the domestic finance, shelters that the
city runs, homeless shelters, jails, all of those things could
be impacted by this. One of the saddest things that

(01:56):
I've read in the research about this is the number
of women in prison who are having men housed with them,
many of whom are actually sexual predators, that's why they're
in prison, but they've decided to identify as female. So
this is something that it is very pertinent, it is
very real. A lot of times here in Nebraska we
think these things don't happen, Well, they are. I have

(02:17):
schools probably once a week, I will have a parent
calling me saying, hey, listen, this is happening in my school.
My daughter doesn't know what to do, or they went
to the administration. So just extrapolate that to the city.
Any of the city services that you get, and you
received where sex could actually be an issue, where you
would want privacy, where you would want to have someone

(02:39):
of your sex performance services. So again, prisons, homeless shelters,
the domestic violent shelters, those are the ones that pop
into my head immediately.

Speaker 3 (02:48):
Well then why don't we just write those into your bill, Kathleen.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
Well, we are working real hard to get the bill passed,
and this is something that you know. Each city also
has the ability to control those things. So my bill
will deal with education k through collegiate. It addresses state agencies,
but it does not have any impact on a city function.
So it's a tough bill.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
No. Now back to your bill.

Speaker 3 (03:16):
Our old friend merv Repee, the eighty two year old
narcissist down there from Ralston, has made it clear if
you throw bathrooms and locker rooms into this, i'mon. No,
have you worked it out with him?

Speaker 2 (03:29):
Well no, Well we've come to an agreement. We are
going to get an amendment on his amendment to remove
the bathrooms and locker rooms from the bill, and then
I will bring those back next year. And I had
told people, you know, if I can get this bill passed,
I will consider the issue taking care of as far
as I'm concerned. But every time I do the research

(03:49):
into this, I find so many more issues that are
linked to it that so next year, since I'll have
to bring back the bathrooms and locker rooms, I'll bring
back a few other things as well. You know, this
is it's not something that goes away. This is something
that we absolutely have to stand up for women about.
It does impact boys as well. I think in Virginia

(04:09):
ludn County there are three young men who were talking
amongst themselves in a male locker room because there was
a female in there and they they were uncomfortable. They're
the ones getting charged. So there are so many double
standards going on here. It is just unbelievable and stuff
does happen.

Speaker 3 (04:28):
So just to be clear, in this version of the
bill that will be up for Select file tomorrow night,
bathrooms and locker rooms are not a part of it.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
Well, I'm going to have to get the amendment put
on to remove the bathrooms and locker rooms out. Correct,
it was just the athletics, so it's it is. It's
a blow.

Speaker 3 (04:46):
But what I mean, honestly, Kathleen, what's the point athletics?

Speaker 1 (04:50):
Athletics?

Speaker 3 (04:52):
But locker rooms for a girls' soccer team could include
a boy? Okay, so I agree, I get it.

Speaker 2 (04:59):
Have a conversation with the center.

Speaker 3 (05:01):
Oh, we know, he knows where we stand. I mean,
has anybody tried to reason? But the guy, look, for
all I know, is a smart guy. I've not done
an IQ test on him, but I do know he
likes the spotlight. Even though he says he doesn't, It's
obviously he does. He loves it when people see him
as the thirty third vote. But has anybody explained to
him why we're actually doing this? And does he have

(05:23):
grand grandchildren? Does he have a granddaughter?

Speaker 2 (05:27):
I believe yes to both of those, and yes we
I've worked with him for a very long time. And
you know this is in the legislature. This is very
often part of the frustration because I'm difficult bills. You
do need thirty three and making sure that you have
all of those thirty three on board at the same
time and moving through the process is very difficult. This

(05:50):
is it's it is a setback, but I will take
incremental steps if we need to and just keep coming back.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
All right, Two quick things before we run here. Talking
with State Senator Kathleen Kal what do you see happening
tomorrow evening with your bill will have advanced to the
third round? And number two, what do you see happening
in the mayor's race in Omaha?

Speaker 2 (06:13):
So I'm optimistic about it advancing to the third round.
Look at the amendment on I know that there's a
lot of obstruction plans, but that's okay. I'm strategizing for
that and for the mayor's race. I would like it
if John Ewing would actually answer the question. He is
avoided answering the question, which usually means he doesn't want
people to know how he really feels. Because when eighty

(06:37):
percent of the country agrees that men should not be
in women's spaces or in their athletics, that's something that
he's not actually just I mean, that's an easy thing
to say, Yeah, you're right, you know, that's something that
is Mayor. I would make sure that we don't have
that happening. But he's not doing that. He avoided what
three times coming on your show.

Speaker 1 (06:56):
Well, all three of our local show, all three of
our local shows yesterday invited him and I didn't. I
didn't get a response. I don't know if Scott did.
It sounded like Emory Adam lined up and then he
didn't show, so I don't know anyway, Yes, it's interesting,
it's an interesting strategy, and you have to say that's
a strategy at this point. It was the day before

(07:16):
the election.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
They're keeping him hidden, they're keeping him quiet about this.
He doesn't want to disappoint his progressive base, and he
is progressive, and so he will not make the statement
that he would keep boys out of women's activities and
areas well. That's he also doesn't want to offender of
the state.

Speaker 1 (07:37):
That's one issue one question. The other one would be
what about what is exactly your policy on sanctuary cities?

Speaker 3 (07:44):
So oh, absolutely so those two well, no, he's answered
it just now in front of the media. Well, we
have tape of him talking to neighborhood groups about ice
and it's not positive if you are afraid of illegals
coming into the community.

Speaker 1 (07:58):
So more on that than the Genosi in a little
over an hour.

Speaker 2 (08:01):
Yeah, he's I hope everyone gets out and votes, even
if you think, well they won't, has it wrapped up,
Go and vote.

Speaker 1 (08:08):
They won't. That's sad, but we'll see.

Speaker 3 (08:10):
Maybe, maybe, just maybe, it's a beautiful day it is.

Speaker 1 (08:14):
Senator. Thanks always good to have you on.

Speaker 2 (08:17):
Of course thanks
