Speaker 1 (00:00):
I went on and on about we were gonna chat
with legal analyst Jeremy Rosenthal about the latest in the
Luigi Mangione case. He's the guy that killed Brian Thompson,
the CEO of United Healthcare, and then through my own error,
we misfired and Jeremy is good enough to reschedule. Good morning, Jeremy,
good to have you on.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Thanks, thanks for having me.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
How are you you bad? I'm fine? So what's this
mus up to now? He wants he's claiming double jeopardy,
right if if he's tried by both the State of
New York and the federal government.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Well, I'll tell you what. First off, I've got to
give you, guys massive applause for playing Chuck MANGEONI as
the lead is to Luigi Mangi. That was on purpose, right,
It might have been.

Speaker 1 (00:46):
This just might have been.

Speaker 3 (00:47):
It speaks to the psychosis of Gary Sadlemayer more than
anything else that he would equate Chuck Mangi Luigi Mangoni.

Speaker 1 (00:57):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
Yeah, Okay, I'm the world of the world's last Chuck
Mangione fans, and it drives by family crazy and I'm
afraid at some point I'm gonna say Chuck instead of Luigi. Yeah,
when I'm.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
Thinking about it, well, it's not an everyday name, so
it is.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
It is that and maybe there can I don't know,
but yeah, okay, so let's let's cut this apart. Let's
sort dissect this. So what the law says we we
have we are we have what are what's called dual
sovereignty in the United States, meaning that the states sovereign
even though you guys only have one body of your legislature,

(01:35):
right that's and then the United States government is the
other sovereign. So we have two sovereigns. And what the
law says is that you can be prosecuted in both
for the same conduct and it does not violate double jeopardy.
So that is.

Speaker 1 (01:57):
Oh man, we've got really really bad connection here, Jeremy,
I hope it pulls up.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
Well, uh, we we do, we do, but we've got
we've got we've got a bad bone connection, but we've
got a powerful legal connection.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
Right. Well, what I what I what I'd be interested
in mostly before we lose you entirely. You've you've you've
defended a lot of bad guys. How would you defend
this case? Given the fact that it's right there on videotape.

Speaker 2 (02:27):
Well, it's not me is not going to work. Okay,
that that part's not gonna work. So what you have
to do here is you've got to look for different
ways to do it. And this defense, I'll tell you what,
they've been really really good in my mind. Now they're
going to lose, okay because their man is as guilty
as he can be and he's caught, and there's not
a lot of defenses. But you have, uh, you've got

(02:50):
a potential insanity defense, which I don't know that that's
gonna work either, but it's closer than anything you have
because it's not me doesn't work. And that to the
double jeopardy. New York is one of the only states
where state law says the Feds prosecute you, then we cannot,
So that actually will for New York State. Now with

(03:17):
and I can guard uh what is it? Who's the uh?
Who are the heisman? I'm on green right, I can
try to tackle that guy. I'm trying to pick a
corn Husker. I'm a Texas tech redwister.

Speaker 1 (03:28):
I've got.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
Eric Crouch, Johnny Rogers Crouch.

Speaker 2 (03:35):
That's the guy that killed us. He watched us absolutely
mutilate the Red Raiders one year. I still have nightmares.

Speaker 1 (03:47):
But yeah, oh.

Speaker 2 (03:50):
Great, yeah, see yeah, I'm glad you guys remember it too.
I mean it was you're like, gosh, it's easy, right,
so but yeah, his defense team has actually done a
nice job in my view. Now again, they're going to
come in seconds here, but they've done as good as
a job as they can.

Speaker 1 (04:08):
Ga. Hey, Jeremy, thanks, I'm going to cut you loose
on that note because I'm afraid we're going to lose.
That phone connection is very dicey. Jeremy Rose. Yeah, that
would be the only way to go, wouldn't it be.
I'm not so. I'm sorry, I'm not so. I got it.
You can't. You can't give me the chair or whatever
they do in New York. They probably even don't have
the don Federal does. Yeah, sure, Federal. Oh. If I

(04:28):
were him, I would want I would want the Federal
case dropped and go with New York because they'll probably
turn them loose.

Speaker 3 (04:37):
We may not turn them loose. But he's not going
to get sparky. He's not going to get the needle.
He's not anymore

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
