Speaker 1 (00:00):
Horrible news yesterday a massive a building explosion in Fremont
at Horizon Biofuels. And we're joined for a few minutes
this morning by Fremont Mayor Joey Spelenberg spellerberg Meyer. Good morning,
good to have you on.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Thanks for good morning, Gary, Jim, so thanks for having
me this morning.

Speaker 1 (00:16):
What is the very latest and particularly as it regards
those who were inside the building.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Yeah, so I was actually out there this morning on
the scene of our firefighters were there all evening. We
had a fire kind of going all night, even through
the rain. So we are we're meeting with pass Force one.
They are going to help us be able to get inside.

(00:45):
They were there yesterday and again at eight o'clock this morning.
They're going to get as this was just a massive explosion.
You had the feet maal area, had the office area
just under flame basically stop. So we've just been trying
to control that fire. And so you know, again we're

(01:07):
working as hard as we as we can, as quickly
as we can. We do know the three get missing
people that were in there during the explosion, uh, and
so it's just a matter of us Again, I was
there looking at the scene this morning. I mean, it's
just it's a difficult scene and to be able to navigate.

(01:29):
And so that's uh, task Force one what they specialize in,
and and you know, we really got to get it
under under control. At this point.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
They haven't been able to get inside at all yet, right.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
No, we have not.

Speaker 3 (01:41):
So a couple of questions Joy number one. That explosion
and it was captured on video remarkably, and that video
has gone viral. Sent bricks in the air, other than
some car windows that were punched out, probably because of
the force of the blast. Was there any other significant
damage done to air or buildings in proximity to this one?

Speaker 2 (02:04):
Yeah, actually, you know, surprisingly know, I mean I was
there yesterday afternoon, right after the explosion. I was actually
in a meeting at city Hall and with my utility
general manager and my city administrator and he's got to
call we had an explosion and we headed over there.
Uh you know, there's a decent proximity around the buildings
where uh, you know, we have other businesses that again

(02:28):
were an impacted. So that is a that was a
positive when you look at it, look at that it
wasn't bigger than what we could have been. But you're
you're right. I mean, you look at those videos and
you know it was again terbal explosions. So yeah, it
is a you know, you look at that and in
the surrounding area, it just really seems isolated.

Speaker 3 (02:50):
To this building. The other question involves other people. We
know that there were three there are three missing. Were
there are other people in the building, did they it
out unharmed or were there any other injuries?

Speaker 2 (03:04):
At this point that we believe there's only three people,
we do have a reason to believe there were two
other employees that got out that were there. That's unconfirmed
really at this point, but that's kind of what we
know really. So we're just, you know, gonna work as
hard as we can today to be We're working with

(03:26):
Task Force one to you know, get in there and
do the work that we can. So, yeah, that's what
we know at this point.

Speaker 1 (03:34):
Fremont mayor, Joy Spellerberg, you've had eyeballs on the building
and there are others there who know the building. Joy,
tough question, I guess, But does that luck to you,
like as possible that those three were maybe on a
lower level where they could have found some some cover
or some shelter and survived this.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
It's just so hard to tell right now.

Speaker 1 (03:57):
Gary.

Speaker 2 (03:58):
You know, the building has a feedmal area and then
you have an office area, so we think that they,
you know, would have possibly been in that office area.
But you know, it's just you know, the fire was
kind of blazing all day yesterday and it was uh,
you know, it was just controlling. That was our main

(04:19):
focus in securing the area, and so it's just really
really hard to tell at this point. We hope to
have more information on that. I mean, we're still less
than twenty four hours here trying to get in there
and assess it.

Speaker 3 (04:32):
So it's a difficult question any any expert opinion on
what may have caused the blast yet.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
No, no, we do not know that. We had uh
State fire marshals there yesterday, you know, doing that kind
of preliminary assessment, but it's just you know, we still
have an active fire going. I mean I was there
this morning. There's still an active fire. So it's just
it's too early. I'm sure they will go and get that,

(05:01):
they'll do that assessment when they're able to do that,
but yeah.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
We don't know, you know, Mayor about the thirteen year
old Osha violations that had the company successfully addressed those. Yeah,
I don't.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
I was aware. I just was aware of those from
the report. I think that's up to the company and OSHA.
I guess I don't know, and I wouldn't be.

Speaker 1 (05:26):
Able to comment on the company. The company is not talking.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
Yet, right, No, I mean I don't think they Yeah.

Speaker 1 (05:33):
I don't think they are. These local Are these local owners?
Have you spoken to them?

Speaker 2 (05:36):
I am not spoken to the owners.

Speaker 1 (05:38):
No. Are they Fremont people?

Speaker 2 (05:40):
I believe I believe they are.

Speaker 1 (05:42):
Yeh, yes, all right, Hey, Mayor, thanks for the time
this morning, and God bless you all up there and
let's hope for the best.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
Thank you very much. Thanks for your prayers and the
opportunity and having to date.
