Speaker 1 (00:00):
Scott Vordielitz making a return appearance this year at the
shadow Ridge Music Festival. And that's just one of four
bands that'll be out there three weeks from the night
before we talk about the other ones. Let's first welcome
in here, not just the guy behind this concert, but
(00:20):
he's also kind of in charge of Shadow Ridge Golf
Course and country club as well. It's Justin Shanahan.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
Scott. Thanks for having me.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
Yeah, dude, it's so great to have you in here.
I really appreciate you coming in because I've always been
a fan of yours since we were little kids growing
up playing golf here in town. You've gone to make
golf a career. I've gone to make golf a You
make money in the world of golf sdays, I just
I chuck so much money at the game. I don't
(00:50):
get any better. There are some days I love it.
Most days I hate it, such as the life of.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
A golfer guys like you, Scott, to make Yeah, that's
that's exactly right. And I want to talk here more
and just a little bit about kind of growing up
in that world. But first let's talk about this music festival.
Seventh year. Congratulations, Thank you so much. Yeah, we continue
to grow this one. We'll talk about the lineup, but
(01:15):
it's going to be our biggest one yet. We have
Bush the Fray, We talked about Lit the band Fuel,
So yeah, we're really excited for Yes.
Speaker 1 (01:23):
Just in case people are like, yeah, I kind of
heard some of these bands or what did they do?
You'll be well versed on that in just a moment here.
But first, Lit, this is is this the first repeat
appearance band.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
Or this is the second repeat we had Big Head
Todd played twice Okay, but yeah, yes they were phenomenal.
But yes, Lit bringing Lit back. Those guys are phenomenal guys.
And you know, so much about what we do is
the nostalgic component of it. And you hear these songs
that take you back and you played a little bit
of Lit, but that I mean that song you can
(01:59):
remember your helf at parties videos. Oh yeah, you know
in high school early college listened to that.
Speaker 1 (02:04):
I still if I hear that song, I'll crank it
up and I'll sing along with every single word and
just run my voice raw singing. And that's a great
shout and rock song right there. But it was at
the Shadow Ridge Music Festival a few years ago that
they played there. Yes, and they said, hey, this is
a fairly new song, and most people are like whatever.
I loved it so much I bought it on iTunes,
(02:26):
the song about getting kicked off a plane.
Speaker 2 (02:28):
Yes, it's great. It's a great album, just as.
Speaker 1 (02:32):
Good as my own worst Enemy there By lit.
Speaker 3 (02:34):
Well, these all these bands you talk about lit Bushes
came out with a new album.
Speaker 1 (02:39):
Let's talk about this band because this is one of
my favorite pieces of music and all my rejoined music.
This is another song that if I am just feeling
a little bit low t this throws me right in there.
This is a little bit of the band Fuel, another
great nineties rock band, a little bit of their song Gee,
(03:00):
this is or a gun walk away hemorrhage in my hand,
big hit Shimmer, another big hit for Fuel. Really great
band here, and I've never seen them perform live, so
I'm super excited to be there for you.
Speaker 3 (03:18):
No, i haven't either, and usually we try to go
and see these bands perform. I've saw Bush recently, but
I've never seen the Fray and i've never seen Fuel,
and I've heard they're both phenomenal live.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
Yeah, I've seen lit at the shadow Ridge Music Festival.
I've seen your headliner. The band I'm not as familiar
with is this next group here? And this is a
little quieter, much bigger hit than the other ones I
just played. But I recognize if you didn't hear it
on the radio, you saw it in TV commercials for
(03:52):
whatever the TV drama was of the week.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
This Gray's anatomy skirts.
Speaker 1 (03:57):
I think it was Cray's Anatime. I'm not as familiar
with this band. How did the Fray come to be
in there with all the rest of these loud guitar songs.
Speaker 3 (04:05):
My daughter likes them of all the things, and they
they have a different reach. I think one of the
cool things about our festivals we try to bring you know,
the bands are of the same genre, but some different
bands that you wouldn't see tour together normally. You kind
of put them in the in the mix and it
it offers something for everybody. And so yeah that my
(04:26):
daughter played me a song by him, and I did
a little research and they're phenomenal.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
That's you know. My daughter plays me like I like
this band, then I might buy her a CD. I
feel like, what's this? I yeah, yeah, your car didn't
have a CD player. That's right. Well, actually, my kids cars.
My son drives a car with a cassette deck. That's awesome.
It's not a new car. All right, here's your headliner
for this show. I love this band. Yes, Gavin and
(05:00):
guys from the band Bush absolutely rock it out. They
can slow things down with a song like Glycerin, But
as far as I'm concerned, you get some rock songs
like this one Little Things by Bush, or another great
guitar riff on this one, machine Head everything' zan. I mean,
(05:20):
these guys hit after nineties alternative rock hit. I haven't
seen him in a long time. I'm anxious to see
him out in the parking lot there at Shadow Ridge
here in a few weeks.
Speaker 3 (05:30):
They're gonna be phenomenal. We caught him about a year ago,
very high energy. The lead singer gam He's a rock star.
So to get those guys here. If you would have
told me when I was sixteen years old that Bush
was going to headline our music festival, I would have
not believed you.
Speaker 1 (05:45):
Well, let's talk about how this works because Justin Shanahan
is with us here. What is your official title there
at Shadow Ridge? These days.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
I'm the general manager of Shadow Ridge.
Speaker 1 (05:55):
Yes, it was now, I guess seven years ago where
you were working with your dad. You guys, your dad
was part of the very I mean the historic Highland
country Club. Yes, and then he and Gary Gabrielson went
over to i think through another golf course, got over
to Shadow Ridge started that up, Yes, and and it
(06:18):
became a premier country club here in Omaha. It's an
incredible golf course on a West Pacific Now the age
old question do music and golf go together? I mean
that goes back to the movie Caddy Shack. Yes, he
jams some journey there and they're dancing on the golf course.
Do music and can music and golf co exist at
(06:40):
Shadow Ridge?
Speaker 2 (06:41):
They can?
Speaker 1 (06:42):
You know?
Speaker 3 (06:43):
And I think that says something about our culture, our
environment out there. It's it's not Bushwood country Club as
you mentioned Caddy Shack. It's a dynamic, young place.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
And what's nice about the music festival.
Speaker 3 (06:56):
It's opened to everybody, and we love having people come
out to out Ridge for the first time and see
the property and come out and you have I mean,
the production value of what we do is incredible. The stage, sound, lighting,
it's a it's a really special experience and we love
sharing that with everybody.
Speaker 1 (07:11):
Yeah, how do people get tickets for this year's event?
To see all those great banks.
Speaker 3 (07:14):
You can visit our website shadow Ridgemusicfestival dot com. They're
also for sale etis dot com.
Speaker 1 (07:22):
Etis dot com or shadow Ridge Music Festival dot com.
The show is three weeks from the night. That's Friday,
September fifth, Yes it is, and it actually starts kind
of late afternoon. It does.
Speaker 3 (07:32):
Doors open at five. Fuels going to take the stage
about five thirty, so that'd be our first band.
Speaker 1 (07:38):
Lit will follow Get there, Get there, Fuel.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
And you know, we've been very fortunate the support we
have for the music festival continues to grow. We've had
sellout or new sellout crowds the last few years. So
get your tickets now.
Speaker 1 (07:52):
Shadow Ridge Music Festival dot com is the website and
when you get in there, there's so much to do
in terms of eating and drinking. And what I really
like about the shadow Rich Music Festival is anytime I'm
like I'm gonna go grab a beer, it's not like
I'll see you in three or four songs. It's like
you turn around, and there's a beer.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
That's huge emphasis on the convenience and experience of the
festival goer. Our goals to have the shortest bathroom lines
and concession lines of any festival in Omaha. And I
think we accomplish that.
Speaker 2 (08:23):
I really do.
Speaker 1 (08:23):
Yeah, you've got everything set up just great there. And
even though the it's kind of a long concert ara,
it's all fenced in there in an area of the
parking lot where you got the stage down here and
then it goes back probably you know a good seven iron,
you know, it's probably nine iron for you you're a
better golfer than I am. To the back end of it.
(08:46):
Even if you're at the back, which tends to be
for people that just kind of want to talk and
hang out. Yes they don't need to be right there
in front of the stage. But even when you're at
the back, it still sounds great back there.
Speaker 3 (08:58):
The sound is phenomenal. We have, in fact, we the
only festival that we put up the jumbo trons on
either side of the stage so you can watch it.
You can be Yeah, for you a good six iron
back Scott and you.
Speaker 1 (09:08):
Can hooded six iron hood to get it back there.
Uh so when you wanted to start this up, were
you like, but Dad, can I can I do a
concert in the parking lot.
Speaker 3 (09:21):
He's the biggest he's the biggest fan of this out
of anybody.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
He loves it.
Speaker 3 (09:25):
And you know, we've actually invested in the infrastructure of
Shadow Ridge to build so we always say it's in
the parking lot, but we actually built a giant pad
to how's the stage that we want? So it's uh yeah,
he's he not only loves it, but he's allowed me
to invest back into them.
Speaker 1 (09:41):
I'm sure he had questions in the first year. Who
was the band the first year? We had the Monsters
the first year, and since then we've seen ever Clear,
We've seen three eleven bare naked ladies, who am I forgetting?
We've had collective soul.
Speaker 3 (09:56):
Like over Gin Blossoms, Soul Asylum, we had viol Femmes
one year.
Speaker 1 (10:01):
So it's all the fastball. It's it's such a great
time there, and that was just one show. No I'm kidding.
So I'm sure he asked some questions for that that
first year, like, all right, we're not going to tear
up the golf course, right, how do we keep all
these you know these potheads and there do wells to
poor balls and gutter snipes from tearing off across the
golf course.
Speaker 3 (10:20):
Well, originally we were going to put it on the
driving range scott In that week it rained. It just
rained and rained, and we're looking around and I actually
did call my dad. I said, I have an idea.
We're going to move this to the parking lot. And
so we did and it worked out great because you know,
you go to one of those you go to a
show and trudging through wet grass is not great, especially
for ladies. They want to you know, if you get
(10:42):
dressed up and go, oh, you're see.
Speaker 1 (10:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (10:45):
The greatest thing we ever did was move it to
a hard surface and then expand it to right.
Speaker 1 (10:49):
Yeah, that's uh. Stir Cove is another one that used
to have, you know, just a grass down there, and
then you'd go to a show right after it rained
and you're just in the mud, and they're like, we
got to do something different, and thankfully over the years
they have yes. So, yeah, great idea to move it
to the parking lot and keep it there over the years,
so as if people want to be a part of
this once again. Shadow Ridge Music festival. It's always a
(11:13):
ton of people there. It's a lot of room. But
how does someone say, well, I want to go, but
I want to be really close to the stage. How
do they navigate that?
Speaker 2 (11:22):
You know?
Speaker 3 (11:23):
The GA tickets are the best tickets in the house,
which you've always prided ourselves on. But there's room to
move around, you know, get there early, you know, and
I think we put a cap on capacity so it
doesn't get overly crowded. It feels lively and it's fun,
but it's not it's not something where you can't move around.
You can't get a beer, you can't get your Dante
(11:45):
pizza or whatever it is you want.
Speaker 1 (11:46):
And a couple other things I want to mention here
about first the show, and that is there's a charitable
angle to this as well, and it's a really great one.
Tell me about the foundation you're tied into with this
event and why it is import and for you to
be able to do this absolutely so.
Speaker 3 (12:02):
Our charitable partners Lane Thomas Foundation. It's a tremendous organization.
I encourage everybody to go online take a look. But
they assist give financial assistance to families whose children need
life saving transplants. Matt and Melissa Graves great people, and
we're really proud to give a portion of every ticket
sold to those guys and help their foundation grow.
Speaker 1 (12:24):
Everyone else in the world seems like they've gone to Disney,
had a wonderful time for that family that we know.
The tragedy that happened to their little kid, Lane, just
absolutely awful. I think about them all the time, such
wonderful people and their foundation, and I know that the
Aspen Seamen Foundation as well, they kind of work hand
in hand. Just really great people here in our community.
(12:45):
Thank you for what you're doing to provide for that
foundation as well. That's super cool. How do you go
about picking the bands? Like? I literally think that you
just look through your CD collection. That is literally what
I nineteen ninety eight and go, oh, I forgot. I
got to call these guys.
Speaker 3 (13:03):
If anybody in our vintage will relate to this. You
had the CD book, right, Scott, you had, You'd open
it up and that's how you took it in your
car you went to the party.
Speaker 2 (13:13):
So I have mine still And were you one of those.
Speaker 1 (13:16):
That had the book that you put underneath the seat
of your car or were you one of the visor.
Speaker 3 (13:20):
Guys, I was under under the seat. You could get
more in the book, yes see it it was a
thick book. And so that's how I started, and that's
what I do to this day. I mean, it's a
labor of love. And so any bands that we bring
in first and foremost, it's got to be a band
that I go, I remember them from high school and
they you know our formula. You have to have songs
you can sing along to, and you have to have
(13:41):
songs that you go, gosh. I remember being at a
party with my friends and I think we I think
we do that.
Speaker 1 (13:47):
Yeah, it's it's such a fun time. And again this
year's lineup the fray Lit Fuel and your headliner bush Uh.
This is coming up three weeks from the night in
the parking lot at Shadow Ridge Club, which is out
at about one hundred eighty eight ecif yep. And as
far as parking goes, what do you want? People?
Speaker 3 (14:06):
We have a couple options, so you can park just
passed it on two hundred and fourth at Elkcorn High School.
You can also park on site for paid parking, but
we offer complimentary free parking and.
Speaker 2 (14:16):
Free shuttle service to the show. If you park over
at Elkhorn.
Speaker 1 (14:18):
Yeah, Elcorn South High, Elkhorn South High.
Speaker 3 (14:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (14:21):
So yeah, and it's it's it's really easy to get
in and out of there. There's a ton of people there,
but it also feels like a fun intimate experience as well. Yes,
and three weeks from tonight Shadow Ridge Music Festival, go
to shadow Ridge Music Festival dot com. Real quick before
you leave, What has your life been like growing up
with a dad who worked golf and you kind of
(14:44):
grew up in that atmosphere. And then I think a
lot of people would think, like, oh, you know, you
grew up around country clubs and all that silver spoon
and all that you don't realize un till later, Like
the club pro guy is not the richest guy in
the club noise, far from it. So your life and
growing up in the game probably, like I said a
moment ago, there are some days you love the game,
(15:04):
some days you hate the game. The work that goes
into being where like golf is your life to being
there for the enjoyment of the members of Shadow Ridge
and then the patrons for this golf course. What has
your life been like in this kind of working your
way up through this world because a lot of guys
are like man, I'd love to work in golf. It's
(15:26):
got to be a dream come true.
Speaker 3 (15:28):
In the in the club industry in general, and for us,
you know, shadow Ridge has grown. Not only you have golf,
but we have pool and tennis and multiple restaurants. We
just opened a new simulatorroom. So it's a phenomenal family
experience and to be part of family's memories, right, They
make memories at shadow Ridge, whether it's at a music
festival or on the golf course or whatever. We give
them a phenomenal experience. We help them make family memories.
(15:50):
It is a great job. I love what I do.
Speaker 1 (15:55):
