Speaker 1 (00:04):
This is Community Matters, a weekly public affairs program to
inform and entertain you with some of the great people, organizations,
and events in and around Omaha. Now here's the host
of the program from news radio eleven ten KFAB. It's
Scott for Heats.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
We now welcome back maybe the greatest mini marathon er
that this world has ever seen. It's Denise Ibsen Cole
back here on Community Matters. Denise, welcome back.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
Thank you for having me.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
Twenty six point two steps yep. Tell me about the
Mini marathon twenty twenty five editions.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
I know the twenty twenty five edition.
Speaker 4 (00:41):
I asked my volunteers that they thought we'd still be
here nine years later, and they're like, no, but here
we are and we're still having fun.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
Way, so we didn't think you were serious when you
told us about this the first time. Let alone stay
ninth Annual Mini Marathon. Let's go back to the beginning.
Why did this start?
Speaker 4 (00:57):
This started because I am a very clumsy marathon runner.
I was going for miles. I was signed up for
my third Chicago marathon, and right after I signed up,
I promptly walked off a retaining wall and broke my
hip and so then miles becomes a little bit more difficult.
And so we were taking pictures at the cancer survivor
part because your husband does a lot of things for
(01:17):
you when you're walking around with well, not walking on
crutches with a broken hip, and so we were taking
pictures and I asked my son how many steps are
in that wood Trellis area? So he marked it off
because it's about thirty and I said, well, I don't
think I'm going to get to Chicago this year, so
this is going to be my This is going to
be it. I'm going to do twenty six point two steps.
It's probably going to hurt like a marathon at the end.
(01:38):
And it has just grown so much in those nine
years of people who usually once people hear it, really
hear it, hear me say steps, the next statement is, oh,
my gosh, I can do that.
Speaker 3 (01:51):
And that is just such a true statement.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
Was that a problem at the beginning trying to get
people who were not marathon ors to be a part
of this because they thought it was a twenty six
point to marathon marathon, old miles and all that. And
at the same token, you had people who thought it
was a marathon. We wanted it to be a full
marathon and showed up all ready to go, and you're like, no,
we're just walking from We're just.
Speaker 4 (02:12):
Walking and we're gonna do it a couple times and
then we're still gonna have pizza, you know, from Godfathers
for the carbs. We're gonna have root beer beer from upstream.
So we're gonna be good. We're gonna treat it like
it is. But yeah, we My husband Joe ran into
somebody one time who was a marathon runner and they
didn't think it was very funny. They didn't think this
whole concept was funny. And as a marathon runner, I
thought that was even funnier. I'm like, they're not breaking
(02:33):
any world records, so just have a good time and
enjoy the fact that you can run miles and some
people are going to do steps.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
It's all okay, it's fun. You've got to have a
sense of humor about it. You gotta be willing to
have a good time and also have a heart because
there's a charitable angle to it all.
Speaker 4 (02:45):
There's a terrible angle. Yep, we are. It's a free
will donation. We've raised close to eighty thousand dollars. We've
supported over the three years or the nine years, three
different charities, but now we focused on the Hereditary Cancer
Foundation that was started by a dear friend of mine,
Brandy Preston here in Omaha, and I'm a board member,
so full disclosure on that. But we pay for genetic
(03:06):
testing for people who don't have insurance or underinsured insurance
is causing them grief. We help battle the insurance. We've
been advocacy up at the state Capitol and then the
Nebraska Medicine Oncology Patient and Family Experience FUN. I always
have to think that it's a little well, it'll.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
Wordy, no notes, that is coming straight from the brains.
Speaker 4 (03:28):
Yeah, and they pay because there is a lot of
charities that help with things, but it takes a while
to get everything in place, and so they help kind
of bridge that gap for gas because if you all
of a sudden going to the hospital thirty times for radiation,
that's going to cost you a little bit more than
what you initially budgeted for gas for the month. So
they're going to help bridge that. They help with food
(03:48):
because if you are fighting cancer, it's really hard to
all of a sudden price check all of the foods.
You just need to get the food and get home
and get on your recovery track.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
I love the specificity of things like that because it's
obvious that this was thought up by people who have
been there and didn't realize these are the needs and
how can we help meet these needs for other people.
So that's fantastic, Thank you.
Speaker 4 (04:08):
And we've expanded since I've last seen you. Omaha is
still the only home at the moment. But I was
appropriately challenged, right, it's on a Sunday. It's always our
original is always a third Sunday in September, and somebody
was having some difficulties with church and thought, well, if
we moved it to a different day, that would be easier,
And I said, true, but I have the BRCA one mutation.
(04:30):
General population is one in four hundred is your risk factor.
But if you're Ashkenazi Jewish, which is most of the
Jewish individuals in our city, it's a one in forty rate.
It's much much tighter. And I go, I can't really
make the argument to move it to synagogue, but we
can move this to a different day. So now we
have one in North Omaha. We've had it twice. North
Omaha brings the North Omaha Flair. It is amazing and
(04:53):
it's on a Saturday. And then I also Nebraska Medicine
asked me to be part of their Cancer Survivorship conference
and that was really really moving to hear so many
cancer patients be willing to take one step at a
time for movement, and so that was really crazy and
fun and indoors we had a marathon indoors.
Speaker 3 (05:13):
How many people can say that?
Speaker 2 (05:14):
So well, it's not hard to find the space when
we're only doing twenty six point two steps. We're talking
with Denise ibsen Cole. She is the mini marathoner, the
twenty six point two mini marathon. So if people want
to be a part of it this year, when is
it coming up? How do they register? What do people
need to know right now?
Speaker 4 (05:31):
What do people need to know? It's on September twenty first,
third Sunday in September. It's at the Omaha Cancer Survivor
Park over by Trader Joe's off.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
Of Pacific Street. It's free.
Speaker 4 (05:42):
We do free will donations. But I never want finances
to be a barrier of somebody to come, So please come,
even if finances are the barrier. This year we're highlighting.
Every year, I've tried to highlight a cancer that people
might not realize is connected to high risks. So we've
done breast ovarian, pancreatic, prostate, colon lynch syndrome. This year
(06:03):
we're doing skin cancer. There is some genetic risk, not
a lot, but there is some, and so I want
to kind of bring that to people's attention. And it's
from nine point thirty to eleven. We run the mini
marathon a couple times, so if you miss it, you
can still catch a repeat, but we'll we'll start right
around nine forty five with the first run. And the
(06:24):
website is www dot two six' two minimrathon dot. Com
and if you register then you at least get the.
Emails it's not, again doesn't, cost but that way you
get my emails When i'm letting you know what's going.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
On thanks for doing skin. Cancer that's one that you
don't hear as much. About and people die from skin cancer,
absolutely probably because they go to a. Dermatologist if they
go to a, dermatologist dermatologists might, say, wow we've got
some stuff in. There we're gonna have to go in
there and do mos surgery and cut this, out and they're, like,
ah we don't need to do all, that and then
it takes root and people die from skin cancer.
Speaker 4 (07:00):
Die and and they don't they don't think about that
risk right of getting to the dermatologist having the. CHECK
i haven't HEARD i read somewhere where someone's, like even
if you're not really getting into the, dermatologists maybe you
don't have one really easily, available have a buddy, check
have somebody else helping you check your, hair and because
the dermatologists are checking all the nooks and crannies for
those different moles and really kind of. Knowing and LIKE i,
(07:20):
said there is you, know first of, all protect yourself
in the, sun but then also knowing what your family.
Risk your skin is the largest organ that we kind
of just take for.
Speaker 3 (07:30):
Granted And, Scott i'm just.
Speaker 4 (07:31):
Gonna, say maybe you didn't lay out when like when
we all did when growing, up but baby oil is
not your.
Speaker 3 (07:36):
Friend don't do that anymore. Anybody So, NO.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
I didn't lay out WHEN i was a, kid BUT
i was outside a golfer growing up. Outside, yeah, well
all the skin cancer and pre cancer and Surgery i've
done on my. Face here's my. Scar, yeah that's all
from SUNBURNS i got WHEN i was a, kid, fishing riding,
bikes playing, baseball hanging, out being outside all the. Time
so IF i could do anything now other than put
(08:01):
on sunscreen and a, hat it would be a time
machine to go back and tell that, idiot do like
your mom, said, again put on sunscreen, exactly you. Know
so that's that's kind of how we grew. Up if
we would have ever told our friends back in nineteen
eighty WHATEVER i got to run inside and put on some,
sunscreen we wouldn't be allowed to hang out with our friends.
Anymore nobody would be listening to, you name, calling and
(08:21):
you're not allowed to hang. Out don't even bother coming out, here,
Right but people are smarter about it.
Speaker 3 (08:26):
Now people are much smarter about.
Speaker 4 (08:28):
It people are being you, know my kids put on
sunscreen and they're now they're young. Adults but, yeah much
more aware of. It and, again different. Ethnicities i've had
some interesting conversations with people who maybe have different pigmentation
and they're, Like i'm not TAKING i wasn't taking this
as seriously AS i should. Have thanks for helping kind of,
(08:49):
refocus so everybody needs to take it. Again we all
have to leave this rock at some. POINT i don't
want anybody to go.
Speaker 5 (08:54):
Early.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
Excellent so once, again if people want to be part
of this year's mini, marathon this year it's for all,
cancers for all cancers, specificity this year would be on
skin on skin. Cancers, yeah do what what do they
need to do right?
Speaker 4 (09:07):
Now right now is let me know you're. Coming that's
pretty much what the website. Is so go to the
website www dot two six Two Mini marathon and click
register and you're just going to tell me you're.

to get a little competitive and try to race. Forward
and USUALLY i have a little kid that's also trying
to race and the adult breaks, it and then the
kid cries and we do it.
Speaker 3 (10:14):
Again so no. Problem that's so that's the easy. Part
everybody can break.
Speaker 2 (10:17):
Up you don't win anything for your special time or.
Speaker 3 (10:21):
Anything you don't win.

A Cancer Survivor walk, right which is very.

Speaker 2 (21:31):
Brask thank you so much for Listening To community matters On,
This iHeartMedia omaha. Radio Station I'm scott Vorhees From news
radio ELEVEN. Ten kfab our next couple of segments here
are both from the kfab's morning news program Hosted By.
Speaker 9 (21:47):
Gary sadelmeyer some information for YOU that i think may
well be important for all of us to be. Aware
OF and i had not heard of this, condition before
but it's emerging in the healthcare community as. A. Concern
uh there's a collection of health conditions that can trigger
get this, heart disease, kidney disease and diabetes at the. Same,
(22:09):
time really it's CALLED the. Ckm syndrome and we're joined
for a few minutes this morning By doctor Tiffany, poul
wiley a cardiologist and a volunteer With The American. Heart
association doctor, Good, morning.
Speaker 6 (22:23):
Hi, Good morning thank you for. Having me.
Speaker 9 (22:25):
You're welcome it's a pleasure to have. You here what
are we dealing? With here? That's new why is this
seems to me suddenly. A concern.
Speaker 6 (22:35):
So it's important to think about cardiovascular kidney metabolic SYNDROME
or ckm syndrome as a collection of. HEALTH conditions i
know it's a it's a lot, of information but it's
what's really important to know is that we want people
to understand that, heart disease, kidney disease but even diseases,
(22:56):
like that etes, and obesity these are interconnected diseases and
they can affect people at the, same time and so
it's important to think about how do we screen for
the important risk factors for.
Speaker 9 (23:07):
These diseases what would you say that an individual should
do to make sure that their doctor is screening correctly.
Speaker 5 (23:17):
For this.
Speaker 6 (23:18):
So it's important to talk to your doctor about getting
screened for the risk factors that affect both heart disease and,
kidney disease as well. As diabetes so these are getting
it's important to get screened for your, blood pressure to
get screened for, your cholesterol but also your, blood sugar,
your weight and, most importantly and what people don't always,
(23:39):
think about is getting screened for. Kidney functions so getting those.
Kidney tests when you go to, The.
Speaker 9 (23:44):
Doctor about NINETY of us adults THE stat i saw
a doctor that have at least one, of these one
of these symptoms or one of. These criterion.
Speaker 6 (23:57):
That's right so we've known from search recent research that
want nine AND ten us adults have at least one
of the risk FACTORS for. Ccam syndrome but what that
really means is that many of us have issues with,
our weight with our, blood pressure with our. Blood sugar
(24:17):
and what's important to understand is that these are things
that can, be treated but also that if you catch
them early and start taking care of, them early they
can you can actually prevent heart disease and. Kidney disease
but you can also make sure that things. Get better
and so what it's really important is getting the screening
done with. Your position what.
Speaker 9 (24:38):
Would you let's talk. About TREATMENT what i suppose a,
doctor says, you, know WHAT there's ckm going on, in
you and here's what we can do to. Treat it
what would?
Speaker 6 (24:46):
That be so the TREATMENTS for scam syndrome. Are medications
there are things new medications for diabetes and for heart
disease that can help and actually treating the kidneys, As
well so it's important to ask for medications and making
(25:09):
sure that you're on the right medications when you talk to.
Your doctor the other big piece is making sure that
you're working towards preventing things from getting, any difference and
so that means making sure on the, right diet making
sure you're getting in that, physical activity and talking to
your doctor about prevention.
Speaker 5 (25:28):
As well, You know.
Speaker 9 (25:29):
I'm interested in your take as. A cardiologist and something
that we chat about here on this, program frequently and that.
Is diet because you see all kinds of conflicting articles,

getting enough fruits, and vegetables making sure that you're limiting
your the different types of high, fat protein trying to eat,

lean meat so lean cuts, of meat as opposed to more,
fatty meats but also making sure that you, limit sugar sweet.
And beverages but really the best diet for anyone is
really a diet that they can they can stick with
and making sure that they limit.
