You meet Bob. He's a fourtime tire rotation champion. When he was
a baby, his first words wereautomatic transmission fluid. Bob's so cool he
has engine coolant running through his veins. And then there's Kyle, also known
as Premium Unleaded. Legend has itthat Kyle can change your oil with his

(00:21):
toes and that he can tell yourtires ille pressure just by how you're walking
out. He's Bob, He's Kyle, and every Saturday morning they morphed together
to form the greatest superhero known toman. Mister Mechanic check eche and lights
don't stand a chance. This isthe Mister Mechanic Show on eleven ten,

(00:42):
kfab great Saturday morning to you. This is a Mister Mechanic show. Five
five, eight, eleven ten isthe numbers to get in. This is
a Mister Mechanic show. Where wewere an interactive calling show where you have
the questions, we'll help you outwith the ANSWER's top to a couple of
answers to get you kind of backto the repair garage and get you going

(01:03):
with that repair. You know it'sgonna be a little sunshiny today, maybe
a little windy. I don't knowif you want to work outside all that
much, but you know, yougotta do what you want to do if
you in order to get up andget that car rolling. Uh. So,
you know, I found something interesting. Always try to find something interesting
for the show. And here's itdown in Arizona. It's a guy needed

(01:27):
to ride in a in a ata low so he needed to ride to,
you know, get where he wasgoing down the road. So he
got a con. Not a con, but he asked the guy if I
could get a ride from a truckdriver. Truck driver was hauling cars and
they're all covered, so he reallycouldn't tell what it was. But once
I'm sure they got talking, herealizes he's carrying a truckload full of corvettes.

(01:51):
Okay, so this guy decides heneeds that, so he takes the
whole truck of corvettes. He kicksthe guy out, and he didn't get
very far before he got pulled over, and now he's on heading to heading
to jail. That interesting, youknow. I mean, you could pick

(02:13):
up a driver and you don't knowwhat the cargo is and back, but
when you can see the car,I can just picture this happening. This
is on the like the stupidest criminalsthing. You know, you steal a
semi truck and you sit there andkill it ten fifteen who knew it was
a stick and so many of thoseyou know, like, uh, you
see this happening. Yeah, Imean there's a theft to turnent with a

(02:34):
lot of people kind of bring thatup. You know, I got a
stick shift? Can you drive oneof those? Well? Yeah, I
thought everybody could drive a stick shift. I'm from olden times. Yeah,
I'm from olden Times week I wasthere three thousand years ago. Well,
it turns out there's a lot ofpeople can't drive a stick shift. So
it's it's pretty much. Yeah,I just leave my doors unlocked. Ain't
nobody gonna steal this? Keys arein it? Well anymore, it's special
order. I mean, who makesa standard car anymore. Yeah. We

(02:55):
got into an older Jaguar the otherday. I think it was an X
type and uh it was a stickshift, like the four tourist based ones.
Yep. Yeah, I've seen those. Yep. Well, I've been
in a lot of those cars overthe years, and they were all automatics,
and it's like I wouldn't expect itin a Jaguarre, I been a
luxury vehicle, should be an automatic. Yeah, I'm looking for the gear

(03:15):
shift, and I'm thinking, well, there's numbers on it. Oh,
this is a stick shift. Reallynever done algebra before, I need the
numbers. Yeah, it took mea second, you know. And there's
like there's some cars out there too, because we're in so many different cars.
You know a day that Lincoln andand some of GMC put their push

(03:38):
button you know, park, neutral, reverse drive, everything on the dash,
and in Lincoln's it blends right intothe instrument cluster. And once you're
in the car and you know itand you can see where it is,
it's it's real simple. But ifyou jump in a car that you haven't
been in there bringing in for youknow, do some service on it,
it's like where are the buttons?Yeah, you sit there and stare at

(04:00):
it for a while and then it'sjust like it's hidden right on the right
hand side. So that's one thing. And I've brought this up to many
different people because I mean, Imean you and I were in forty to
sixty different cars a week, easy, easy. Every one of them is
different. I mean we got toget in and figure out how the car
is supposed to work before we can. I mean it's not easy anymore.

(04:21):
I mean you don't got the leveron the floor and yep, you know,
I mean all the dials. Imean it used to be you had
three knobs for the heater at most. I mean to work a heater,
and I mean we got a digitaldisplay involved. We've got to you know,
enter an app. We gotta figurethis out. Yeah, there are
some some cars out there that gottwo knobs and eight buttons, literally eight

(04:45):
buttons, and to figure out whereyou want to go and if you want
to go up down here or therewherever. Yeah, it is kind of
And the ones that are really kindof interesting that really kind of take your
eyes off the road is the heatingand air conditioning and the radio that are
in jeep bad. I mean,I have a twenty twenty one jeep and
I mean I have to physically stopand figure it out. Yeah, you

(05:06):
know, to get the heated seatto turn off. It's in the display,
isn't it. Yeah, Yeah,it's all in the display. So
you really got to take your eyesoff the road to go over to display.
Like a tesla. Everything in aTesla, and it's it's pretty cool.
I like the screen that's on there, but you really have to take
your eyes off the road to seewhat you're doing in order to go over
there and say I want that orI want that. And we've complained about

(05:28):
this before, and I think customershave also complained about it. They would
just like to reach over, graba knob and turn it. Yeah,
yeah, it's easy. Yeah.Or you want to grab the radio and
press one button and mute it insteadof having to go over to an app
because you're always listening to your music. They should have a big and a
lot of that stuff. I mean, like when we got this jeep.
I mean, my wife's going throughit and you're, oh, you got

(05:49):
a link your phone to it andall this. And I'm not computer savvy.
I mean that might come as ashock to some people. I can
make a machine work. I knowthat. A computer, I'm not so
much. Yeah, yeah, youknow, In speaking of that a little
bit, I know there were someother stats here. We're getting better and

(06:09):
driving. We are down on thison a sad note, but we're on
we're down in death this year intwenty three. Are we talking about the
state or though the whole country. We're down overall about a four percent drop
compared to where we were, youknow in twenty two and right out of

(06:30):
pandemic. It just seems like everybodylost their ability to drive. And yeah,
there was a little bit of alearning curve coming back into it.
And I don't know, I supposeit's like anything else. You said,
home all the time you forget tohe to drive. Yeah, I don't
know. Well, remember we spokeyesterday because I was kind of reading in
like the worst cities to drive inin the country. You know, Detroit
was up there two years ago.Omaha, we were the worst city to

(06:53):
drive in by I remember that insuranceclaims. You know, but we're back
down. So we're getting better aroundhere, guys, but we're back down,
or somebody just eclipsed us. Detroitis kind of heading off. You
know, they're the champs. Sothey took that personally and decided they would
drive a little crappier than everybody elseso they win the title back. It's
kind of Stanford, Connecticut is actuallythe safest city to drive it by far.

(07:17):
I mean, all the roads downthere and narrow. If you don't
pay attention, you're running into somebodyhead on. I imagine. Yeah,
it'd be terrible to be like anauto body guy there. I mean,
you never have work. Never. We're gonna head over to Doug. Doug's
got a stick shift question problem orotherwise? What's up, Doug? I

(07:38):
know, I just was looking atyour comments about people not being able to
drive stick shifts anymore. We wereback east here a while back, said
a nice hotel. Pull in.They have a you guys to take your
car and park it for you.So we take our bags in them.
Look outside a little while cars stillparked up. I go ask the guy,
there's a little little stand, youknow, the take sure of vehicles.

(07:58):
We need to move it. Isaid, well, just move it.
Well, all the people working theirown kids, none of them who
could drive a stick They had topull some guy out of the back who
looks a little bit beyond his yearsto be moving cars around. He had
got to move the car because youngpeople just don't have to drive. Yeah.
The funny thing is that if you'reback someplace for a lot of traffic
and a lot of cars and alot of crime, but they well maybe

(08:20):
my car's a little safer, justthey could even if they want to.
No, if they did that,at least the clutch should be out of
it, and at least it'd onlybe about a block or two away,
but at least you know where itwas. Yeah, yeah, I know.
Sometimes in the hiring process when wehired people, that was one of
the questions. I asked, anyway, can you drive a stick shift?
And uh, majority some say no, but the majority do say the act

(08:41):
and then the I taught a lotof young kids how to drive there at
the station, just all right,we're going to figure this out. If
we're here, we're learning. Yeah, yeah, it ain't that funny.
I mean I learned. I learnedwith a three on the tree. That's
that's how I learned. You know, my dad's here, here's a car
for Yeah, you got to getit home. And it's like, why
do I do that? Why killedit? A bunch of times? Gosh,

(09:03):
I made it home because it wasa car. I was going to
drive it. Yeah. So afew years ago, remember we had that
auto auction down at the Century LinkCenter. That big company came through town.
We had two day auto auction,so we had a customer that had
four Model T's and I had toget him running for him so that they

(09:24):
could go to this auction. Itwas an estate he was handling, and
I got him running, and youknow, thank god, there's you know,
manuals still for that stuff, becauseI mean I had trouble figuring out
how to drive it. There's alot more going on. Yeah, very
primitive back then. I get himall running, he trailers him down there.
I get a call on a Saturdaymorning, you know, about this
time from a frantic auctioneer. Nobodyin this building can drive this car and

(09:50):
it has to go across the block. Okay, did you come down here?
So I had to go down thereand drive it. So, I
mean they had the whole place openedup, and this little street made.
I mean, you've been in theconvention center. And so I get this
thing and they sell it and they'relike, okay, park it back down
where it was, and I waslike, that's clear on the other end.
So I figured I would open thisthing up and see what it had.

(10:15):
People were walking faster. Yeah,I'd imagine back in that era.
Yeah, well, thanks Doug.I appreciate the call. You too,
Yeah, you know, it's theevolution of cars. I think that one
was like a nineteen fifteen Ford andoh gosh, yeah, exactly fun.
It had all the brass on itin a little honkey horn, you know,

(10:39):
yeah yeah, And then you talkabout electric cars. I think it
was nineteen nineteen, was one ofthe nineteen oh eight Baker had one.
Gosh, I did it. Lookhow far we've come from now? Yeah?
And it looked like a hall closetwith wheels on it. Pretty much
pretty much, yeah, pretty much. All right, we're gonna take quick
break on the misst mechanic five five, eight, eleven, tens of numbers

(11:00):
to get in. We'll be backin a minute. Okay, this is
an ondly well, it's an onlywhere I came from. All right,
fellas, this is a blue drivenbee. Watch me for the changes and
a trunk keeper. We're done ina garage with the oil leagues way up

(11:22):
under the hood where the engine squeaks. They stood in old cornad O rous
dan Wood. They lived a greasyboy named Mechanic be Good, who never
had a longa read or write sowell. But he can change your attire
like a ring handle bell. Gogo go, mister mechanic, Go gone,
mister mechanic, Go go, mistermechanic, Go go, mister mechanic,

(11:48):
Go go, mister mechanic. Begood. The Mister Mechanic Show is
brought to you by and In ServiceCenter. Call to schedule your appointment today
at four oh two three ninety threetwo two. We're gonna head over to

(12:11):
Stu. Stu's got a twenty fourteenbuick Enclave. What's going on today?
Well, we are on a roadtrip and uh, I'm getting a engine
light on traction control and stability trackservice light. We stopped and uh put

(12:33):
a scanner on it, and I'vegot a misfire and cylinder one. Okay,
just had the plugs and coils replaced, So I'm thinking it's not a
park issue. What else could itbe? Fuel injector? Fuel injector?

(12:56):
Ye? Did? Did you havethem all replaced? All plugs, all
coils? Yeah? Okay, Iguess the first thing that comes to my
mind is one of the plastic connectorsthat cook onto the coils. That that'd
be one of the first things thatkind of come to my mind, and
the injector would probably be the secondthing. And that those had problem.

(13:18):
Those were the direct injection like kindof the first era of those that would
always leak out, wouldn't they.Yeah, And then because those connectors are
plastic, they sit underneath there andthey just get hard brittle and when you
when you touch them, they canbreak, or when you put them back
on, they can break, butyou don't notice that they're broke, you
know when we put them on.We always put them on and then tug

(13:41):
on them a little bit to makesure they're fastened. But that'd be and
then the last thing would be maybejust a bad coil possibly. So are
you on? Are you on along road trip or whereabouts are well?
So we're actually heading down to seethe eclipse and uh going driving to Memphis

(14:03):
today? Okay, we're just we'rein Springfield right now, so we got
a ways to go yet. Sure, I'm just wondering, Uh, what's
the what's the wisest thing to do? Well? On that car? I
believe number one should be on thefront bank of the engine. So when
you open the hood, you're gonnahave a big cover. You got to

(14:24):
take that off. Then you'll seethree coils sitting kind of right in front
of you. You can look atthose. Are they plugged in? You
know, did all the bolts getput in? Did one pop out?
Yeah? They're a lung like that. They're a lot easier to see than
they are the back ones. Yes, yeah, And you know, secondly,
you know, you can pull thatnumber one coil out, it'll be

(14:48):
over on the passenger side. Doesit have spark there? Did we get
a faulty coil out of the box? Seeing that one hundred times? You
know, were you trying to solvethe misfire to begin with or were you
just doing preventative maintenance? Maintenance?Okay, all right, so let's start
go back to what we've done.Yeah, go back to what we've done.

(15:09):
Really, take a step backwards exactly. I was thinking sometimes that you
can have problems with valves or seatsor something that's not closing all the way.
But if you weren't trying to solvea problem to begin with, then
chances are all the mechanical parts areOkay. There's a possibility that it's not,
but more than likely we're going toassume that those were fine. Yeah,
you have to add in bad coils. You know, you get a

(15:31):
spark plug that the parts store dropped. You know, I mean, things
like that can happen. So let'sstart with what we did. You say
it's number one, so number one'son the front side, number one.
Yeah, okay, so you canyou've got any tools with you? Uh
no, I don't okay, allright, Well, is it is a

(15:52):
light missfire or a little bit ofa miss or a huge misfire? Well,
it's it varies. Sometimes it's uhpretty heavy missfire. Sometimes it's fine.
We can mechanicals, Yeah, wecan rule out mechanicals what Skyle's saying,
so we know that it's it's notbattle seats aren't gonna jump out and

(16:17):
then jump back in. They're they'regoing to be out and cause of problem.
So but what I was going tosay, if you had tools,
whether you could easily take number oneand switch it with number three and then
when you check your code again, you know, a a part store,
see if it's switched over to numberthree, and that tells you probably got
a bad coil. I might I'mthinking you probably got a bad coil,
So you can always stop. Idon't know if i'd want to drive it

(16:38):
all that that way with uh missfiredcatalytic converters. It's being sacrificed. I
mean a lot of things can gowrong. Yeah, it's going to add
up quick as far as having toreplaced catalytic converters on that, because I've
done that estimate and it's it's it'spretty not fun. Yeah. So you
might be able to stop at UHat a part store and buy a coil,

(17:02):
you know, out of a chance, and you can borrow tools from
most part stores too. Ten milimeters. It seemed like it it ran fine
after I'd shut it off. Isthere a chance that it would have reset
the computer or would that not happen? Not likely. I'm guessing you more

(17:25):
or less had a cool down issuebecause most things will break down hot.
I think the spark is probably I'dsay the spark is leaking through the boot,
through the silicone boot and snapping overthe ground. And that's why it's
a misfire sometimes and sometimes not.Or a bad plug. Yeah, all
right. Plugs are pretty sturdy, but they're kind of also kind of fragile

(17:45):
too when you're going in and outwith them. But if we know which
one it is, that's half thebattle. Yeah, hard parts out.
Yeah, all right, well Imay stop and have somebody to take a
peek at it. Yeah, Ifind Yeah, I think the time is
well spent versus because the cost onthe other side driving it all the way

(18:07):
there and back is going to bea lot. Yeah, yeah, all
right, I hope that helps.Well. Appreciate your help absolutely. Yeah,
that's uh. There's certain cars thatyou don't want to mess with.
Uh. One that comes to mindwas the older FOURD Escapes when it had
when it had a missfire that you'vegot that done right away, otherwise you'd

(18:30):
blow a hole in that intake whenthat cat had plus yeah, yeah,
plug up the whole next thing. You know, we went from a two
or three hundred dollars deal to acouple thousand dollars deal with all the cats
being plugged up and gone. Ohthat's sent a lot of cars to the
junkyard because nobody wanted I mean yeah, because they was eight years old.
Yeah, it was about two thousandand seven, eight nine, ten,

(18:51):
all those and you see a fewof them out there still, but not
many. Most of them kind ofrested away. But there's a lot of
the cars that would miss fire forweeks months, oh yeah, and it
would never plug up the catalytic converter, and it's it's kind of interesting that
there's no rhyme or reason to whichone does that, because I've seen a
lot of them. Tallows, it'sbeen misfired a long time. Well,

(19:12):
what's that mean. I don't know. Six months long as I've had it,
ten years, as long as I'vehad I just figured that's how it
ran. Yeah, we time boughtit. Well that's why they sold it.
I heard that more than a fewtimes. Here's an interesting article I
ran across, Kyle, tell mewhat you think. Merseides Benz is entered

(19:33):
into an agreement with uh Aptronic. It's a it's a deployed human robots in
its factories. They are called Apollo. It's probably stands five feet tall.
Well, he's one hundred and sixtypounds, can lift up to fifty five
pounds. It's supposed to do kindof monotonous things that they wouldn't want the

(19:57):
regular worker to do. You know, go get a rotor, go get
that, Go get this, goget that, and just kind of walking
around. And Mercedes ben says,it's not here to take any jobs at
the planet at all. It's thiswon't affect any of the other people that
are working there full time. Ineed one of these. Yeah, what

(20:21):
do you think of that? Howlong do you How long do you think
before there's nobody in that plant?Oh, give it a year or so,
we'll be talking about it. Savethat article, write down my guess
on it. We'll do it overunder. But I need one of those
for around the house because I mean, how many jobs do we have that
you know this robot could do.I mean, I don't want to pick
up dog poop in the backyard.I don't want to rake leaves. This

(20:41):
robot doesn't know either way. It'sjust whatever I tell you to do.
It was out there doing it.I think there was a movie like that.
I think it was called I Robot. And then then what happens Kyle?
Well, anyway, they're coming forsomebody's job. I can't think they're
very instantly saying they're just going todo the mundane job. So that what
that? What's that make your job? Monday? Yeah, they're just working

(21:04):
on the programming to get it todo the smart people. Yeah, Yeah,
they're just gonna watch. I'm sureit's learning. It's watching what they're
doing all day long and said,I'm sure they have a robot meeting and
said I can do what he doesand I soon Pinky will take over the
world. I can do it attwo in the morning. Yeah. Really,
you got a long enough extension,Cornel, dude, run the whole
thing all right, Five five, eight to eleven ten is the number,

(21:29):
said, Get in and we're gonnatake a quick break here on the Mister
Mechanics Show. We'll be back ina bit. The Mister Mechanics Show on
eleven ten. Kfab is brought toyou by you Canon Service Center. Visit
us online at Ucannonservice dot com.Jim's got a twenty ten Toyta camery.
Jim, what's going on today?Yeah, Hi, I've got a check

(21:51):
engine light I've been dealing with.I've actually had that thing on for the
whole time I've had the car, about fourteen thousand miles. Car runs flow.
I finally decided to check it andit comes up with a zero zero
one seven code on my scanner, which is a VVT selenoid. So I've

(22:14):
tried to replace that not once, not twice, not three times, four
times. I've put one in thelast one was a factory Uh, factory
Toyota part still no fix on it. It's also called an oil control valve.
There's a filter in that thing toothat I've checked, and it is

(22:37):
like new, not clogged at all. So I'm out of ideas. I'm
wondering if you guys have any cluesfor me to be six isn't it?
No, it's a four? Isit is on the intake or exhaust side?
Uh, it is on the intakeside, the actual the sensor you

(23:03):
mean the solenoid. Yeah, becausethere's two of them. There's one for
intake and exhaust. Oh really,m h well that could be an issue
then, yeah, there should beone for each of those. So the
reason I asked if it was aV six because they were very popular.
Common to go bad in the Bsixes all the time. Not so much
common in the four cylinders, however, they did, but very the B

(23:27):
sixes are way more common. Wenormally don't see this a lot in Toyota.
No, you don't, not inthem. Was great for them,
still are, yeah, But soI mean your other yeah, I mean
your other variables are the circuit? Is it being controlled by the computer to

(23:47):
open when it should? And you'vegot a phaser on the front of your
camshaft, and that's what that solenoidis controlling. Is that phaser, you
know, is the phaser worn out? You know, is the carbon maintained
well prior to you getting it?You know, did somebody go ten thousand
miles between oil changes? So thephaser is constantly moving back and forth a

(24:11):
little bit with the control from controlof oil through that particular soylenoid, and
over a period of time, theycan what Kyle's saying is they can sludge
up, or they can just gettired of going back and forth so many
times, whereas in the case ofthe range rover I worked on this week,
they just explode. Yeah, yeah, explode. This oil is spontless

(24:33):
in it. I mean, there'sit's it's always been real clean. But
anything that's mechanical, even though it'sclean, moving back and forth is just
going to kind of wear out.And it's got fail. Yeah, it's
got a The phaser moves within itself, So there's two metal pieces that are
moving very close tolerances, and overa period of time those tolerances will get
bigger, and that what used tohouse that oil is now leaking out Yeah,

(24:57):
your oils bypassing it right, andtherefore it's just not doing what it's
it's doing for the most part. And are you sure you were getting Now
that we know that there's two,is it possible that we're the right one.
Yeah, we're on the right oneand it's not the other one.
Yeah, maybe maybe. I guessthat's my first job to check check for
that second selnoid and if it needsif it's the same same part, I'll

(25:23):
just try to replacing that one too, And it could be hidden just a
little bit too. One can goon the top and another one on the
side. They can be both onthe sides front. Found them everywhere.
Yeah, and obviously they're going tobe close to the timing chain area,
so you know what's going to bein front. But yeah, they can
just they can just blend in witheverything because they are metal and aluminum,
they can kind of blend in withother stuff. But you know, in

(25:45):
the great you bet, the grandscheme of things, what's that? Thank
you? Thank you for those cluesas to what it could be. I
appreciate it well. On the grandscheme of things, we know it runs
fine. So, uh, areyou're probably not going to tearing into this
engine too deep. Yeah. Yeah, the worst case scenario was one of
my fears. Get yourself a smileysticker face and put over top of those

(26:08):
three and it I mean it's alreadywent for how many years? Yeah,
yeah, that maybe maybe what happens. So who can so who complained about
the lights that made you want tofix it? Now? Is that just
you finally got around to it orsomebody said you need to do that?
I was, I was, I'mlooking to sell it. Actually I got
it. And people are scared whenthey see that check engine yeah yeah,

(26:32):
And and they don't know and theydon't know if that's a benign thing and
it's just a don't worry about it. Hey I've been. They don't know
if you're telling them truth or not, or is it an ideal and it's
it's four thousand dollars. Yeah Iagree, I agree, and I totally
get it. So yeah, thankyou guys. I really appreciate it,
appreciate the call. Yeah, there'sa lot of people out there trying to

(26:53):
sell cars and they say, well, it's a check engine light on,
Well no, not on at all. And this is something we talked about
before and a lot of people maybedon't know this, but we'll share it
is that when we go into ascanner, we can tell that they've got
some things down that are built intotwo newer cars that we can tell the
last time the code has been cleared. Yeah, they said permanent codes.

(27:15):
It's mode ten. Yeah. Sowhen you say check itching night hasn't been
on anything else like that, andit's been fine. We've driven it for
years or months or whatever. Itis when when somebody's flipping a car and
you can hook a scanner up,our scanner up to it and go,
okay, well that was done threedays ago. Well I know nothing about

(27:36):
that. Well somebody does what whatdid you fix or what did you clear?
And I've did't anything about that.So and that's something that came about,
you know, pre COVID. Butyeah, it was kind of put
in place by California and other emissionstates because they were having so many people
go in for smog testing and theyclear their light full into the shop and
then the mechanics none of the wiserIt's okay, there's nodes. Now.

(28:00):
They never acquired you on smog teststo do any of that. It just
does it pass. But one ofthe things that's on here now is the
check engine light on. Well, the check engine light's on, you automatically
fail. Boom. There's just nogoing forward after that. I'm not exactly
sure what you have to do inthose states, but when you get your
repair done for that light, Imean you have to have all your documentation

(28:22):
where it was done and who didit. Yeah, and the problem was
solved and yeah all that because andthen interestingly enough, when I did small
tests in California that you wouldn't youcouldn't tell anybody anything. They had to
come in and you had to smalltest it on its own merits straight as
they pulled in the door, andthen you already knew it failed, but

(28:44):
you had to go through the processof doing it. And then then it
came back out to your side. You would fix what it was, and
we'd go back through and small testit again. And there was a tremendous
amount of people that wanted to payme a little bit of here, a
little bit of there to make itwork and manipulate it to get it passed,
just like you'd get my car licensed. It's like, I'm not going
to jail, so well, thatwas back in carburetor days. Yeah,

(29:07):
there's a lot more that goes intowell getting a carburetor to and yeah,
oh yeah, yeah they like torich. Yeah, And basically what you
did and when you brought it backin and you had to detune this thing
so terribly. Yeah, it wouldn'thardly drive. Yeah, it was a
little bit of a game. Soyou had to. You had to fail
it. It couldn't. You couldn'tfix it right then and redo it.

(29:30):
You had to come back a differentday. You come back, you detune
it all so it passed. Andthen they would come back weeks later and
said, can you tune this backup for me? And you'd put it
back to where it was because hedidn't. There was no law that you
couldn't do that. I'm sure thelaws changed now. But so could you
make this thing run right? Becausethe other day you made it run terrible

(29:52):
just so it could pass well.Running terrible, believe it or you wouldn't
think that, but running it makingit run terrible and slow on time,
I mean, and leaning everything outwould actually makes it past the small test,
yeah, not good for the highway. And then when and then to
make it run right or at least, you know, doable so you can
drive it down the road. Yougot to put it back to a different

(30:14):
sure, Yeah, it was kindof interesting or weird, but yeah,
fuel injection took a lot of thatout and it was It's nice because now
it's way more precise than it everused to be. Now we're doing away
with things that started with early fuelinjection and adding new things like these vvts
and phasers. Yeah, everybody's goneto vvts and phasers in order to get

(30:36):
the power out of it. Youknow, more and more people are going
to you know what else, wedon't have both because of vvts and phasers.
E g R. Yeah, alot of the e GR valves have
gone away, the exhaust gas recirculationvalve in order to career using VVT.
Yeah, and I've proven it ona scope. Yeah, on dcels.
The exhaust valves will stay open forgethow many milliseconds longer, and it's pulling

(31:00):
unburned gas. You know, it'sinteresting. The EGR valves have come and
gone over the years. They yeah, they've been and for some reason,
the Ford Focus had an EGR valveand VVT, Yeah, and neither one
of them worked good. I meanthat's all it does. I mean it

(31:21):
just clogs up and all that sootthat's supposed to go down the exhaust is
now clogging up the intake in theexhaust valve. And you remember the first
time you spent hours looking for avacuum leak and then you hit that thing
with a hammer. Yeah, andall of a sudden everything worked fine and
just throwings smooth as a bell. And it's like, oh yeah, huh
interesting, Well remember that one.Every mechanic's got that story. There's the

(31:44):
older guys. Yeah, at leastall right, five, five, eight,
eleven, tens and numbers to getin. We're gonna take a quick
break on the Mister Mechanics Show. We'll be back in a minute. Cars,
trucks, and SUVs are just happierif Buchanan Service Center routine maintenance,
tire replacement, AC workhands so muchmore at U Cannon's Service Center. It's
our job to fix it right andfix it on time. BU Cannon's Service

(32:06):
Center seventy ninths in Dodge and fiftiethin Dodge in Omaha. You know,
auto sales have been down a littlebit in the first quarter Tesla's down quite
a bit, and now they're choppingprices a little bit for you go out
buy a new Tesla. So ifyou want a new Tesla, I think
prices are getting cheaper. There. They did kind of scrap They're going to
have a nice small Tesla like asmart car. Yeah, I don't know

(32:30):
if it's that small. I thinkit was like a Chevy Bolt, which
is kind of dinky to begin with. Yeah, they were going to come
out. I think they kind ofscrap that too. So but so a
lot of electric cars companies are eitherstruggling to stay afloat or going bankrupt or

(32:51):
trying to meet because they got alot of investor's got a lot of money
and doing all this stuff and theywant to see results. And I think
there's some of them just aren't goingto make it, but there is an
uptick and the percentage has kind offlipped around for the gas hybrids. Oh
yeah, and a lot of yearsoh yeah, you know, TOUTE has

(33:12):
kind of perfected it. And it'skind of interesting now that some of the
reading that I do that all themanufacturers didn't want to get left behind,
so they all one jumped into thebattery you know pool, everybody jumped into
the battery pool. Now people arethose same people are kind of jumping a
little bit out of the battery pool, and they're heading straight into the gas
and the gas hybrids. So there, and the only one that really maintained

(33:37):
a steady course and just kept goingwith it but didn't kind of falter with
it or didn't jump to the pressurewas Tota. Yeah. Toda has been
going this way for a long time, what three five? Yeah, they've
been doing it for twenty five. They did twenty plus years and very little
problems with very little problems. Sothey're kind of seeing maybe they ambled way

(34:00):
back then, but they've been kindof staying the course. So just kind
of interesting things to watch. It'skind of funny, but and it's interesting
and see which way we're going togo. You just don't know that that
was my way to go was agas hybrid. At least you could take
the family to Chicago and didn't haveto worry about it, you know.
