(00:00):
Hey, very nice to meet you. Thank you very much for taking time
and doing this. I really appreciatethis. My name is Bob, and
we're very excited for you to comeinto Baltimore. Have you ever been to
Baltimore before the Lyric or anything?I've been to the Lyric. I don't
know. I think I want toplay Baltimore once and it's one of those
places that's so close and maybe Idid it with the samd l or tour

(00:23):
or something. I feel like I'vebeen there, and now I'm more excited
because I don't go there a lot, you know. Yeah, Well,
we're very excited to have you.I'm a huge fan of yours. I've
followed you ever since. I meanwe're about the same age, so,
and i'd like to get to likeyour start of stand up and everything.
With the amount of time that Ihave, I'd like to jump into something

(00:44):
that I don't think a lot ofpeople talk about. My wife did like
a deep dive when we got yourtickets for your show. We're going to
see you on Friday. Do youmind talking about And I'm very fascinating because
I've watched every episode but like fourof the animated show that you did called
Sammy. It's really good. Ireally think it's great, and I not
only aired for like a couple oftimes, and they pulled it off.

(01:04):
And I'm sure that was a bigdisappointment for you. But it was about
your family, your brothers, andof course your father coming back in your
life. And I mean it's notexactly you. It's an an actor and
you're doing the voices of both. How did that come on? Yeah,
well, I would do jokes myactor, my dad, Sammy, who
was sort of you know, neardo well, it's just toned down version

(01:25):
for TV. But he was likea little bit of a boozy Susie,
and he left us when in Arizona. We were four, six and eight
the kids, so it was justvery tough to grow up. And he'd
pop in once a year and hewas a bit of a rascal. So
I think doing a show animated abouta deadbeat dad was just a little ahead
of its time. That that soundslike a confident to me. But I

(01:48):
did like the show. I thoughtit was more for HBO. It was
a little rough and on NBC becausewe had a deal with NBC, so
we did it there and we didn'tit wasn't a perfect fit. But they
called me head and said, we'renot going to air this, We're going
to write it off. I waslike, we'll air it once or twice
just to get it right off.But man, I thought that was I
love that show. How do youfind it? How do you find it?

(02:08):
It is on YouTube. It justcame on like two years ago.
I just did a deep dive.I'm like an animated show and it's well
written out that it was funny. He had some killer voices mar Tyranny and
Jenning Garoffalo and what Harlan Williams andBob odenk is my brother? Yeah,
yeah here, I mean I knowthat two thousand, but even early then,

(02:28):
those are heavy hitters for voices. And Drake say there was our head
writer who was a good buddy whowound up unliving himself later. He's great
writings on Larry Sanders. He's onmy I think one of those young comedian
specials. He's so funny. Butit was. I thought it was really
well done. I was very happywith it. I'm glad you brought it
up. Were you it was aweird time? Were you bummed out?
Though? I mean all that workand everything and they can get in.

(02:52):
That's when animation was really a production. We're talking yoder and animated right now,
and I think we're only talking aboutbecause it's a little easier now.
It's just not that was like you'dsend it overseas and it was six months
later. You'd get some rough cutsand it's crazy, and then you can
put on streaming. There's so manyother sources too to find an audience for
it too, right, And sothat came out around the same time,

(03:15):
I think as Emperor's new group.Did one lead to the next door or
just completely separate? That took threeyears. That was a long one,
that was and I didn't get paida lot, which is funny because I
loved the movie so much, soI never really cared about that. It
was back when it was an honorto do it for Disney. And then
and then he was paid about ayear later for like Mike, I was
like, oh, yours is anhonor. I got three million bucks,

(03:36):
Like what. So that's the funnypart is that you go and it took
so long and it went through somany iterations that by the time it came
out, I was shocked that itwas that funny, to be honest,
did a great job with it.Dude. I've been a fan of everything
that you've done. You've done somuch television and movies, but really your
stand up is what I enjoy themost. Going all the way back.

(03:59):
And I know a lot of peoplebring this up, but the Young Comedian
Special eighty nine, I mean that'swhere it happened. Yeah, that six
seven minute set. And I thinkit was because we're close to the same
age, and I just had neverseen somebody so young, and you look
so young for your age at thetime too, to have that like sarcasm
and smarm and hint of anger. And I just thought you were the best

(04:21):
on the show. But you almostdidn't make it on there. Did you
have to be squeezed in or something? Yeah, you know that. I
guess you did a deep guy.Dennis Miller was the host. I had
auditioned three years in a row.I was actually a young comedian, and
you know that's how I got intothe improv because I looked just different.
I mean those comics. When Iauditioned, I wasn't the best one.
It was just there's Lenno Belzer,Paul Riser sinefelt. Yeah, so that's

(04:44):
New York comic. Here comes mefrom me. He there's a white blonde
hair. I look fifteen. Sogetting on that was great and then they
squeezed me on. Yeah they didn'thave it was for five comics. They
added one and then they tightened theirtimes up David Bowie and the audience or
that trivia during taping, which madeit even more under wracking. But that
was a real fun one. Thatone got me on certain lot. That

(05:04):
one, for sure was the onethat got passed around. I want to
talk briefly about Saturn Live because Iknow so much. I mean, I
listened to Fly on the Wall almostevery episode the one hour special Take the
Hit in HBO. One of myfavorite jokes to this day, I have
to bring up every other Lenard skinneredsong should be called not free Bird.
That is like one of my favorite. It is so I've stolen that so

(05:27):
many times because you could use itfor any one hit wonder really with any
band, any other AHA song shouldbe called not take on Me. You
know, see you on the roadand you go, when are they doing
the hit? They have to theend or do it? A couple of
times, because there's bands that doit a couple of times because they just
go, you're here, I mean, this is what you want. And
I like when bands still get intoit, you know. I like that

(05:49):
they still nail their one because it'shard. It's hard to get famous and
it's hard only have one. Ilove that it will take the hit.
That was the first HBO special backwhen there's like three years right resonated.
That was like I didn't even knowkind of how big a deal it was
because I was trying to focus onthe stand up because I was doing SNL

(06:10):
and I was trying to get mystand up good. And then I didn't
do another one for twenty years justbecause I go, I'm going to ride
on that one because that was justa fun one to do. And then
nowadays it's pretty much the thing todo. You have to win every two
years. It's crazy. So isthat where you are now? I feel
like you're doing more stand up thanyou have before consecutively because you had the
special a couple of years ago.I think that was an HBO which is
great. So you're doing more thanI know. You got a Vegas residency.

(06:33):
Niki Glacier I did one for ComedyCentral, which was like, I'm
not going to say a waste oftime, but you know Comedy Central,
it's the time when they're just startingNetflix doing them. So you go to
Comedy Central and you have to havea pass code to get it online,
and it doesn't like live forever, you know, it just it's gone.
And even Data was like, Ikeep trying to watch your special, but

(06:56):
you have to get on CONFEDISA knowthey have to join it online. Then
they have to go search and hegoes like, tried three times, I
give it. I go it shouldbe this Netflix boom because I ran into
Brad Pitt at a concert and he'slike, where's your special? I watched
these all the time I'm home allthe time. I was like, fuck,
I got to get one just forBrad Pitt. I mean I he's
not going to listen if you goon Comedy Central and follow these eighteen simple
steps, so you have to getthe geek squad to help you. So

(07:20):
I, well, listen, I'mgoing to get one soon. So I
did one, and I and Iand the material is pretty much all new
now. But I really hate throwingthe way jokes that work and I had
signed for on the podcast, andhe's like, don't throw it away.
He's like, this is the crazything that's happening. It's really older versus
younger comics, right, And Isaid, I know, but I see

(07:41):
guys hours when they do another specialand other special, they get watered down.
It's just you can't help but it'snot as good, it's not as
polished. Yeah, I agree.I've been Comedy Central kind of bailed on
the whole stand up thing. Doyou think they just like kind of were
defeated to the way Netflix is doingit because the accessibility or once Netflix paid
them in twenty million, when peopleare getting a mill that's true, like

(08:01):
oh I'm tapping out and then it'scome back down to earth, you know.
But I think Netflix had a holdon it. Now, when you
were doing Just Shoot Me Rules ofEngagement, two very successful shows, would
you do any stand up like inbetween, not like a tour, but
like pop into the improv comedy Storeor we just focused on the show and

(08:22):
couldn't even focus on stand up.That was the problem even doing specials is
that it wasn't on my radar becauseI was trying to focus solely on just
learning my lines and doing shows andthen the summer and probably do a movie,
yeah, or every you know hereand there. So I could never
do a tour. And my managersabout two years ago were like, during
COVID life, why don't you justbook a tour. We don't know what's

(08:45):
going on, but if you doa TV show, it's not going to
come on for a long time.I just book, I go. I've
never had time to book one becauseI don't want to cancel. I hate
cancel it. So they said, just book it, and if you get
a movie, you have to movethe dates. And then I said,
I can do it now during COVIDyet all the time to think, and
I'm like, I bet I canwork on some stuff. Get out there
and try one of these theater toolsbecause I always problems. Like I said,

(09:05):
I pop in, pop in toa weekend in Irvine or something.
So we set it up and wego out there to see how many people
show up, and then it doeswell. Then you book more. And
now I'm booking more. And ifI might do a movie in twenty twenty
four or two movies, so I'dhave to take a break. But right
now I'm just booking the tour.We just announce more dates. Awesome,
that's fantastic. And do you missdoing a sitcom? Would you go back

(09:26):
to doing that at all? Doyou like the ensemble and the schedule or
that's a good question. I don'tknow because I'm talking to some people right
now, and I always get alittle gunshy because I like it stuff a
little rougher on the edges and sitcoms. Some can push it on box.
There's some places that can push it. It's just hard to get it to
where it's my humor anymore. Butit might work, you know, you

(09:48):
get there's some good shows on TV, so you get the right package and
it might happen. I'm a bigfan of Fly on the Wall. I've
watched almost every episode. Like Isaid, what a great idea of interviewing
past cast members and hosts. Isthere somebody you guys have been still trying
to get to. You haven't,like who's the white whale for you?
And Dana? You know, Shoot, there's only a handful of really big

(10:11):
names. You know. We havewriters, we like, we have castmers
are like I would say Eddie Murphy, I like Kate McKinnon, Kristen wigg.
You know, we just did danAykroyd, which is one of my
favorites of all. Oh Wow comingon in December and at the house at
my house in person, which isfun, and so you know, I

(10:33):
guess slowly but surely they eventually getover there. But it's really fun when
they do. And they're expanding itto just do more comedy, more interesting
people, because at a certain pointwe can't just do only read how is
read through? Yeah? How isit? You know, we love it,
but we got to expand a littlebit, so this next season will
be a little more. You andEddie are cool. Have you talked since?

(10:56):
I mean there's one hundred years agowith the joke on Hollywood Minute.
I think Eddie and are cool andI've seen him since and I think if
he's got something to do, Ithink it's a good place to do it.
And a lot of people would haveto admit Data is one of the
top of all time at SNL,and some people when we're on the show
are nice to throw me in there, but we all know I probably did
more after SNL. But when you'reon SNL, data is just too much

(11:20):
Royalty, and that's why people likeEddie those people. The combination makes people
go yeah, I'd come on becausethey realize at this point we don't go
after him. No one's trying toget any gotcha journalism over right, right
right. I mean you're both greaton the show. I really do love
it and the Hollywood Minute, whichpeople don't know. You made it that
into a show actually for two seasons, didn't you on Comedy Central as well?

(11:41):
Joby's show that and then we did, and then even Lights Out was
kind of fun because it was sortof a panel of comics. I did
like Lights Out on Comedy Central, and then it was dump during COVID quietly
snuffed with a silence. Were youupset about that? I know you mentioned
that the show was a lot ofwork, but was out of barber because

(12:01):
I thought that was one of thebest shows. I watched every episode I
thought was great. I did likedoing it. I thought that's why Jimmy
Fallon, who is I think, does a great job. Like all those
guys, it's so effing hard togo in there, wake up. You
have to feel good every day.Yeah, I walk in at nine o'clock
and I go all right, andI sit down and there's they've already had
an hour meeting and they're just pitching, pitching good. So everything's a decision,

(12:22):
a decision. Go with that, take that angle, Okay, we'll
do that. Get rid of thatsubject. Let's do that one. There's
more jokes there, show that visualand then you go in your room and
you get monologue jokes. I'm picking, tweaking, picking more tightened, and
then you go shoot a pre tape. Then you go down and learn a
dance, and then you and thenyou get wardrobe, then hair, and

(12:43):
then you go out there and it'sstarting, and then right when it's over,
they go, okay, tomorrow,we've got these guys. Yeah,
the way every want to drink myselftoo hard. But I did like it.
I was kind I was bummed becauseit almost lived on after more.
I just it was the it wasit would be ever now because it's a
clip show. That's where you go, there's three jokes my model. Here's

(13:05):
two jokes from our conversation. Here'sme and Tim Dillon arguing with something.
And that's the stuff that lives on. But we're just barely before that hit.
Can you still see it? Wherecan you see it? I see
lights out gifts and I see okaytimes on TikTok and stuff, but there's
no official one. I don't think. I got a quick question about behind
the scenes of starning it live, and you've talked about it a lot.

(13:26):
I know a lot about how thatis set up. The pitch meeting that
happens like on a Monday usually. So the pitch is is it just an
idea or does every cast member likehave some sort of like script or something
to go by to sell it more? How advance does it have to be
to be in the pitch really? One liner is because you've got every writer

(13:48):
and every your cast member gets totalk, and so it's too stuff.
You have a room, it's Lauren'soffice. You're Jim standing in the walls,
sitting on the floor, couches, arms and couches, and the host
in the middle lor Man's desk, and he just goes David, Chris Adam
Conan, and then you just go, hey, you know, Alec Baldwin.

(14:09):
I got one where you do aRussian accent. You're a sub guy.
It's kind of like hum for OOctober. But the subs has attacked
my Manions and then he goes okay, and then you go and I got
another one for update. You're justcommenting on the World series and they go
okay next, and it's that bathbecause some people want to get more into
it, but you don't have timeand you don't a hog time. What

(14:30):
about pre produced bits, same typeof pitch. I don't know, you
know right now they do so manypre tapes. We used to just do
separately on our own. We wouldhand in commercial parodis. Oh. Then
there was a director and he wouldsift through and get one cleared and say,
hey, we're doing Chia Ahead thisweek, and you're like, oh,
and then you have to go directit. You have to go to
meet the design of the Chia Ahead. You have to go meet you know,

(14:52):
a bad idea, jeans, whatever, you know, you have to
go get fitted. You have togo, and then you shoot them at
four am somewhere during a show heartyou get up like a six am shoot
all day, run back, andthen you got to stay all night to
write. Well, they edit thatand the fact could get it all done
is pretty crazy. But I'm justwondering, like if the host is involved
too in a pre produce and it'son location. How does that work within

(15:13):
the week, Like do you know, asking Sarah Sherman, like, do
they the host comes in on Monday? The usually don't even do anything till
Monday night. They just sit inthat room and kick back and you pitch
ideas. But I think they shootall money. Now Yeah, okay,
I got to you. He said, I shoot, I shoot promos,
I shoot something with a Hallmark movie. And so he was just working all

(15:35):
week. Your audiobook, Polaroid Guyin a Snapchat word, I just listened
to that. And the one momentof that book that I want to quickly
gloss over is your best friend, your brother's best friend was like your plus
one. He was your buddy toin La and he apparently did a lot
of things that sort of embarrassed. He was a big party guy and everything.

(15:56):
The story about going to Australia tosee Mulin Rouge and then talking to
Nicole Kidman, is that all true? Can you pick that up and do
a brief version of that. Thebrief version is I must have met Nicole
Kidman when she hosted or something, because I had seen her since at a
restaurant. She was so nice andI would never try to push myself on

(16:19):
her because I was mostly a writerand barely in the show. Yeah,
and then i'd seen her few times. She was always nice. So we
go to the Joder premiere in Australiaand I got my stupid buddy and we
go. The night before we gosee Mulan Rouge premiere Okay, and it's
just it's like eight theaters and youcould drink there. So we see the
beginning of Muhlan Rue. It's notreally for us. So we go to

(16:41):
the bar. We're walking back fromthe bar and there's Nicole Kidman with her
shoes in her hands, with twobodyguards, just like relaxing because she has
to do the press line and she'sseen the movie. So we walk up
and of course my buddy goes goover there right now, and I said,
oh, hi, whatever, andshe's like, oh h however,
Austrange people say anything, and soI go hey and she goes. I

(17:04):
go, oh, this is agreat movie, and she goes why yeah,
yeah, and I'm like, wellthat's a good point. So wait.
She was sitting on like a smallcouch and then there was like a
folding chair and she goes, well, sit down if you want, and
so not flirting, just being niceto me, you know. And I
said, oh, so like totalk for a second, you have to

(17:25):
go run right back. And soI go to sit down. My buddy
sits next to her, and Igo, oh, So I go,
I pull up a steel chair, and then and I said something about she
just broken up with Tom Cruise. It was so dumb even bring it up.
But I had a few knocks.So I go, oh, I'm
so embarrassed to say this. It'ssuch harassment. Because she had her legs
crossed, and I said, oh, you you don't shave your legs,

(17:48):
and she goes, oh, Idon't. Can you believe? Can you
believe that even this is happening tothis poor woman? And she said,
well, I shave at the bottom, but I don't save above my knees.
She goes, should I like,I'm I said, what, you're
not marketing campaigns? Back off,you gotta I'm just trying funny and stupid.
It's so she's so like nice andfunny that I don't think she us

(18:12):
a buy. And then my buddygoes, no, she has great legs.
Touches are like from her foot upto her knee, and the guards
are like ramjet eagle. You know, everyone makes a move to like grab
him and say hey, whoa, whoa, whoa whoa, and he goes,
what what? And then I'm like, I think we'll excuse ourselves,
and you know, and we tookoff. We said, oh, she

(18:34):
didn't say anything. She she couldn'tkill us, but anyway, we left
and then my buddy still didn't getit anymore. And later I said,
it was so out of unbelievable thatwe're not in the clink right here.
And he's like, oh, Ithink she was flirting with me, and
I'm like, oh, boy, talking to you, you wormed your way.
Anyway, It's the most horrible storyin history. I can't believe like

(18:56):
an AUSSI swat team didn't repel fromthe ceiling and grab that guy. The
story is probably a lie, butI mean that's what I remember. Embarrassment
of it all. But I thinkshe was joking around and we were joking
that she was saying or something. She was just being like trying to be
polite to us to get rid ofus. But I still am crazy about
her and that AMC commercial can't getenough. No, that is a good

(19:18):
one. Are you still real closebuddies with that guy? I feel like
you're a good guy, but Idon't see you putting up with that,
getting people, you know, embarrassmentand all that. It was like a
marriage. I put up with itfor about eight years too long. And
he was just such a plus onethat he's his own funny show. Because
this happens to every guy that's inshow. Was there's someone that doesn't work
too much, so they could doanything at any time, so you can

(19:41):
go, hey, stright a wrong. They're like yep, and oh,
any of my other friends are like, no, I have a kid,
I have a job, things todo. But he's like, no,
let's go. But he fundnited. He'd drink way more, he do more
than like. There's too many storiesof that guy, but it was great
anyway that that story needs to bestricken from my life. It's a good

(20:02):
one. So a book, anaudiobook? Would you do another book?
Do you have enough? Do youhave anything in you for another book?
Later on it was such labor thatI went to do an audiobook thinking I
could just riff this is before apodcast. So I was like, right,
I just want these stories and justsay, like lay wound up going,
We'll go in there with something tosay and then I would write it
down. Then it just turned intoanother book. Really, I just never

(20:22):
released that as a book. Itwas just strictly audio. But it was
fun to do. I was gladwe did it. Well, you tell
a good story. It's like astand up, an audiobook stand up.
It really is a great stories there. I'm gonna let you go. I
just want to ask you real quick. Wrong Missy really an amazing folm,
really funny. A sequel possibly orno? No, I mean I just

(20:45):
we got such good feedback from WrongMissy. Yeah, came out during COVID
so again. Then Lauren got marriedand had a baby, and I'd be
ready to do something with her again. She's so funny. So I loved
Wrong Missy. I'm so glad wegot to do it, and I think
it's still one of those top onesfor Netflix. That was the shocking part
that it went worldwide like that.Lauren lepkiz right, Lauren leaftis Yeah,

(21:07):
And I you know what, Igot to mention Snake World two Wednesdays at
nine on Fox. You like hostingthat do you think you'd do season two?
I think I would, just becausethe more I watch it, the
more I realize how ridiculous it isand how hard it is to guess which
is real which is fake, becausethey're both so most sometimes they're both good
products that you think are real andsomething. They both are fake looking,

(21:30):
and that's what makes the show kindof funny, because you keep guessing and
everyone gets it wrong, and that'sthe funny part. It's very tightly edited.
It's very like, I don't knowif you notice that when you watch
it boom boo boo boom. Ofcourse I shot it for five hours.
I'm like, oh my god,I had probably a Netflix special name of
jokes. That's gonna be the biggestfrustration for comedian hosting when you have a
bunch of good stuff and they don'tuse it. They can't use it for

(21:52):
whatever reason. I just want youout there. They go, it's you,
You're funny, And then I like, whatever you do is funny,
And I'm like, what if Ido jokes but don't do that? But
everything else this is just fun.So anyway it is fun to do.
I mean, I would do itagain if we did it. We air
through Christmas, and looking forward tothis show in Baltimore. Yeah, I
go Baltimore, Billy, and Idon't really do either of those places that
much. Yeah, well, thanksfor your time, man. I know

(22:14):
I've gone over and I apologize.David Spade at the Lyric Ticketmaster tickets are
available and I'll be get the showand thank you so much for this.
Can't wait for the show. That'snice, you know overready all right,
I'll see but I appreciate it.Bye David, Bye,
