in RNL Carriers.
Speaker 17 (07:03):
Pregame sports Talk presented by your Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky
Toyota Dealers. I am ken Brew, and yes, we have
arrived at this moment in time, this Sunday before Christmas.
And oh, how we had home back in the day,
back in the sweltering heat of summer camp. How we
hope that this would be one of those defining moments,
one of those days when the Bengals would fly south
(07:26):
take on the Dolphins in a monumental showdown for both teams,
each team clawing and fighting trying to get into the postseason.
Sometimes what you expect is not what you get, and
it's not what we got today. We all know what
happened last week. The Bengals, for all intents and purposes,
eliminated a few weeks ago, finally from a statistical standpoint,
(07:50):
eliminated last week. Meanwhile, against the Steelers, it was the
same song for the Miami Dolphins eliminated from the postseason.
Miami just underperformed. They made up quarterback change and that
quarterback change is to a tag of Iloa is out
probably for good in Miami. For Cincinnati, the problem, as
(08:10):
we all know, was injury. Joe Burrow was out for
the majority of the season. This is a Joe Burrow
centric team. And although Joe Flacco came in here kind
of on a surprise trade and delivering some surprising moments
for the Bengals, it just wasn't the same. So the Bengals,
like the Dolphins, are just faced with one thing now
(08:30):
and that's finishing out the season. And I guess from
an interest standpoint, because look, the bottom line in any
sport is winning a championship. There is only one team
in every single sport that goes home happy at the
end of the season. It's the team holding the trophy.
But when you can't compete for that Trophy. Well, it
makes the sting a little bit well, just a little
(08:53):
bit worse. And so now with three weeks to go,
what are the Bengals do Well? They certainly try to
win all three. That's the name of the game. They're
paid to win football games. The schedule, as you look
at it, seems a little forgiving. You have the Dolphins
today and then back home with the Cardinals who are
not very good next Sunday, and then of course finishing
out against the Browns. There are a lot of things
(09:15):
on the line for the individual players, not Joe Burrow,
not t Higgins, not Jamar Chase, but the players that
are fighting for a spot, some kind of favorable review
at the end of this season to give them a
chance here or somewhere else to continue their career. Meanwhile,
the Bengals need answers, a lot of answers, particularly on defense.
(09:38):
Who exactly is going to help them pull this team
out of this quagmire that they're in. Where are they
going to find the right players either through free agency
or drafting. Drafting has not been all that great for
this team lately, and free agency is a game they
always play on the second and third and fourth day
of free agency. They're not always there. In fact, they're
(09:59):
rarely there on the first day of free agency. So
you have to have maybe a philosophical change that gets
you to a personnel change that gets you to December
of twenty twenty six, when you're in a much better
shape than what you are now. That is basically what
begins today. We'll tee up today's Bengals and Dolphins game.
(10:21):
You'll hear from players and coaches, some writers around the league,
some folks that follow football and have opinions like you
and me as to what needs to be done here
and what truthfully, realistically can be done here because it's
not like here in a lot of other NFL towns.
We'll get to all of that in just a second.
College football is in the playoff mode right now, and
(10:43):
we saw some interesting games yesterday, some that were blowout,
some that had results that I think everybody thought would happen,
but nevertheless, it was an interesting day in college football.
People would say at the end of that selection process
a couple of weeks ago, James Madison University, what do
they doing there? Two lane? Are you kidding me? And
those opinions were born out yesterday because at Oregon James Madison,
(11:07):
although it did put up a lot of offense, winds
up losing to Oregon fifty one to thirty four. Oregon
quarterback Dante Moore nineteen of twenty seven, four touchdowns, two interceptions,
wide receiver Malik Benson five receptions one hundred and nineteen yards,
and he caught two of those touchdown passes. This game, though,
(11:27):
was a very entertaining game. There was over one thousand
yards of total offense between the two teams. But it's
Oregon that's moving on to take on Texas Tech in
the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day. Meanwhile, Old Mess
without its coach Lane Kiffen, he of course sailing off
to LSU at the end of the regular season forty
(11:49):
one to ten over two Lane Mississippi quarterback Trinid Dad Shambliss,
who came from FCS, the next level down from FBS,
the championship level that the University of Cincinnati and Ohio
State and every other team that's playing for a national
well for a quote unquote Division title Division one title.
He came from FCS football and yet comes in Leeds, Georgia.
(12:15):
I'm sorry, Lead's old Mess to a forty one to
ten win. Trinidad Chambliss twenty three of twenty nine two
hundred and eighty two yards, threw for a touchdown, ran
for a touchdown on a day when his team advances
and the team that he left wins yet another championship
at the FCS level. Here's Trinidad Chamberlass at the end
(12:38):
of that game yesterday.
Speaker 10 (12:39):
It's it's a surreal moment.
Speaker 19 (12:42):
If you would have said this before the season that
I'd be the starting quarterback and I'd get Ole Miss
their first playoff victory, I'd be like, you're crazy, But
it's amazing. I just got to give thanks to God
because you know, without him, I mean, none of this
is possible, and just also got it to give thanks
to Ole Miss and my team to be honest too,
like we've we've been through a lot, a lot adversity
(13:04):
and glad that we got the win. And yeah, Farris
Day actually did win the national championship today, so they'd
beat Harding back to back years, So props to them.
Speaker 17 (13:11):
Yep, from Farris State to Old Miss to Round two
of the College Football Playoffs. They take on Georgia in
the Sugar Bowl on New Year's Day. Meanwhile, down at
Texas A and M University, the wind was blowing. It
was a major factor in this game between Miami and
Texas A and M. It affected Miami's kicker a little
(13:33):
bit more than anybody else. Carter Davis lined up for
four field goals. He made one of them, a twenty
one yarder, but he made one that was very important
because Miami beat Texas A and M ten to three,
and Miami had a terrific game from Mark Fletcher Junior
seventeen carries one hundred and seventy two yards. His head
(13:54):
coach Mario Christobal absolutely ecstatic at the end of the game.
Speaker 20 (13:59):
This is awesome.
Speaker 21 (14:00):
It's a next up right and validating what we came
here to do. So obviously we're excited by the time.
Speaker 3 (14:06):
We end up walking into the locker room, well start.
Speaker 17 (14:07):
Thinking about the next one.
Speaker 21 (14:08):
But again, number one or number two, I said, say
credit to them.
Speaker 22 (14:13):
Not a great football team over there.
Speaker 21 (14:14):
They're physical of this environment is second to none. But
the Miami Hurricanes are are just gonna started.
Speaker 14 (14:21):
Now.
Speaker 17 (14:21):
Well we'll see if they're getting started or if they
hit a roadblock. In game number two, they take on
Ohio State on New Year's Eve in the Cotton Bowl.
So there yesterday at Oregon advancing to play Texas Tech
in the Orange Bowl, Ole Miss going on to play
Georgia and the Sugar Bowl, and Miami onto the Cotton
Bowl to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes. Now Friday night,
(14:41):
you at Alabama and Oklahoma. Alabama rallied to win this
game thirty four to twenty four. Quarterback Ty Simpson two
hundred and thirty two passing yards, two touchdown passes. Oklahoma
was up seventeen to nothing after the first nineteen minutes
in this game. And then it went to sleep, and
then it has really horrible look on special teams. They
(15:02):
had a punt blocked, they missed two field goals. Meanwhile,
it was Alabama and head coach Kaylin de Boor cashing
in on all of that.
Speaker 23 (15:09):
Yeah, just our guys have, like you said, had been
in it.
Speaker 24 (15:12):
All year long, and and man.
Speaker 23 (15:16):
Just I'm proud of the fight. I know I'm gonna
get that every single time we step on the football field.
We had to trade our own breaks a little bit.
We knew it's gonna be a fist fight.
Speaker 25 (15:24):
We knew it was gonna be.
Speaker 23 (15:25):
A physical game. It would be hard moving the ball,
but you just got to you just gotta keep playing.
Speaker 17 (15:29):
Meanwhile, over on the Oklahoma side of things, this game
in their stadium in Norman, Oklahoma, the fans were shocked,
the players seemed absolutely shocked, and after the game, they're
head coach Brent Vnnibles was fighting back the tears.
Speaker 26 (15:44):
You know, I had a seventeen point lead, had great momentum,
and and just we lost the momentum and gave up
a seventy five yard drive and the third and six
that we lost leveraging coverage and we gave up a.
Speaker 17 (15:58):
Fourth and two on that drive.
Speaker 26 (15:59):
And you know, Alabama has got a really good football
team and really good staff, and they were able to
start to slowly but surely creep back into the game.
And then then we had a couple of really ill
timed mistakes that they capitalized on.
Speaker 17 (16:14):
Yeah they did. And now for Oklahoma they go home.
Alabama moves on to face Indiana in the Rose Bowl
on New Year's Day. College basketball last night, Xavier goes
on the road, takes on Georgetown and wins eighty to
seventy seven. Xavier goes to nine and four one and
one inside the Big East. Trey Carroll was huge in
this game to set an early tempo for Xavier twenty
(16:37):
two points, eight rebounds, four assists, and then off the bench,
Roddy Anderson contributed fourteen points. But here's the key. Xavier
out rebounded Georgetown forty five thirty six. Look, Georgetown, going
back to the days of John Thompson, has always had
a reputation as a physical basketball team. If you don't
win the boards, you don't win against Georgetown, especially when
(17:01):
you play out in the nation's capital. It's exactly what
Xavier did. They beat them on the boards forty five
to thirty six. After the game, Richard Patino on the
thing that he wanted to look to deliver most of
his team, it was a three pronged thing.
Speaker 10 (17:15):
Yeah, that was it.
Speaker 6 (17:16):
I mean that's what I had a couple of offensive keys,
I had a couple of defensive keys, and then the
last thing I said was toughness. That's what matters. And
our guys did a great job. You know, we're going
to play a lot of teams that are bigger than us,
but we scrapped and fought and won the rebounding battle.
Speaker 17 (17:32):
Yep and Xavier's next game New Year's Eve against Yukon.
That was a very impressive win for them last night
out in Washington, DC. Also, Miami is now twelve and
oh Travis Steel has got it going on up in
Oxford eighty six seventy seven over ball state the icelander
Almore Atlassen off the bench eight for fourteen and twenty
(17:53):
six points. Monumental effort from him. But get this as
a team. This kind of highlights why Miami is all
to an incredible and historic start. They shot fifty percent
from the field, fifty four percent from three point range.
They were thirteen of twenty four and twenty one of
twenty two from the free throw line. That mister grand
(18:13):
total of one free throw twelve and zero one And oh,
now in the mac got some college basketball around here
today three o'clock here on seven hundred WYLWUC at seven
and four goes to Clemson. Actually they go to Greenville,
South Carolina to play Clemson. Clemson is nine and three.
Pretty good basketball team seeing the two of their games
(18:33):
so far this year, Clemson will be a handful for
U see and then at NKU at noon, the College
of Charleston takes on the Norse. Chris mack head coach
at the College of Charleston, coming back to the area.
His team is six and six NKU nine and four.
So there's basketball, there's football from the college standpoint, and
(18:54):
standby will dive deep into the Bengals and Dolphins. Next,
you're listening to the RNLK Carriers pregame show. It's presented
by your Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky Toyota Dealers on ESPN

Welcome back. It's the RNL Carriers Pregame Show, presented by
your Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky Toyo to get I am Kenru.
There's going to be no snow for Christmas up here.
I can tell you that is no not of snow
and be very mild from what I can see on Christmas,
even Christmas Day. Wherever you are, however you're celebrating, we
wish you Merry Christmas, Happy Honukah, and thank you for
(23:42):
tuning in the RNL Carriers Pregame Show. Bengals at four
and ten go to Miami today where it will be
in the eighties at kickwoff, time, Dolphins are six and eight,
both teams eliminated, and the weather decidedly different than what
it was here last Sunday when they took on the Ravens.
Let's hope the outcome is a little bit different as well.
(24:02):
So the Bengals are out of it. Joe Burrow denied
yet again a chance to play in the postseason. Now,
as I said earlier, a lot of that has to
do with the fact that he missed all of those
games because of his toe injury and subsequent surgery. Something
that has plagued Burrow throughout his career is injury, season
ending injury. This one, he worked his butt off to
(24:24):
come back and finish the season, and as admirable as
that was, it was a season that was probably doomed
long before Burrow got back on the field. Nevertheless, Zach
Taylor this week, who revealed that he has two years well,
actually he didn't. The digging of Paul Dayner Junior at
the Athletic revealed that he had two years remaining on
(24:46):
his contract here with the Bengals. Zach Taylor says he
still believes and still thinks that the core is here
for this team to turn it around. In twenty six
and make a run.
Speaker 39 (24:56):
I got a ton of belief in our coaching staff,
our scouting department, our ownership that we are very much
in alignment with every decision we've ever made here, and
so again it when things haven't been good enough over
of course this season, there's really no one to blame
other than me, truthfully, and so I know we all
play a piece of this, but I'm the guy to
get to sit there and talk to the team every
single week and present plans and make in game decisions,
(25:19):
and so frustrating that I haven't done anything job this year,
but a ton of confidence, and maybe it rings hollow
to everyone listening, but I know that we've been here
before and I've seen how we can get out the
other side. I'm very confident we're going to get the
nice Well.
Speaker 17 (25:33):
See, it's one thing to say it, it's another thing
for it to happen, and it's another thing for the
people that he's provided with by Duke Tobin and ultimately
signed off on by the Brown family. It's ultimately all
of that that goes into whether or not this team
can turn it around or not. Let's face it, all
of their money is on the offensive side of the football.
(25:54):
On defense, they went draft picks and they went young,
and in free agency they bottom fed and it didn't work.
So now they've got to come up with some sort
of plan to retain those they need and yet go
out and try and harvest a free agent market and
draft better than what they've done here recently. But for
the players, it's it's finishing out a season, and a
(26:16):
lot of that is pride for the stars to prove
that they're worth the money they're being paid, and for
the other players that fill out a fifty three man roster,
it's to prove that if not here, but somewhere they belong.
Jamar Chase on all of that earlier this week, they're.
Speaker 40 (26:31):
Just trying to finish strong, finish out, will win, and
I just keep playing at the end of the day,
just make sure we finished strong. Can't go out there
and amvess in oursells the organization. We were putting ourselves
out there.
Speaker 17 (26:44):
But here's here. Here is the quote I think that
I carried this week when trying to figure out whether
or not this team is cashed in for this year
or is going out and trying, as Chase just said
to acquit themselves well, not necessarily not embarrass themselves, but
to show what time kind of talent they are. This
(27:04):
is Dalton Reisner, and I think this hopefully encapsulates what
this team is hopefully going to do over the course
of the next three games. Dalton Reisner, I.
Speaker 41 (27:15):
Mean, we all know that we're both out of playoff contention.
There's a lot to play for. I mean, I said
this last week. I don't speak for the team, but
I know this is the mindset of the team is
we get to be Cincinnati Bengals. We get to wear
the stripes, we get to go represent ourselves, but even
more importantly, we get to go represent the Cincinnati Bengals
on Sunday. So anytime I'm putting on the stripes, I
don't care if playoffs are on the line or not.
I'm going out there. I have so much to play for.
(27:37):
This is this is a blessing, and if you take
it for granted, you you ain't gonna be in this
league for long. So there's a lot to play for.
On Sunday, I'm excited to go play the Miami Dolphins.
Speaker 3 (27:46):
We're gonna be ready to go.
Speaker 17 (27:47):
Meanwhile, in Miami, we're A source told ESPN yesterday that
prior to the twenty twenty draft, the Dolphins called the
Bengals and offered them four first round draft picks if
the Bengals would have given them the number one overall
pick in the twenty twenty draft, obviously the draft that
(28:07):
brought Joe Burrow. Here, the Bengals said no and did
not entertain the conversation any further than that. But imagine that.
Imagine if the Bengals did not get Burrow, and imagine
if they had a settle for two at Tagaba Looe,
who had some nice seasons. I'm not putting the guy
down completely, but basically has regressed completely to a point
(28:30):
where's head coach Mike McDaniel had to bench him this
week in favor of a guy that hasn't taken a
snap in a meaningful NFL game. Here's McDaniel.
Speaker 42 (28:42):
So the decision is complicated but simple. The simple pieces.
I think Quinn gives this team the best chance to win.
You know, our focuses obviously to win the next three games,
but in particular, like I tell the players, we are
focused on beating the Bengals. So that was the motivation.
(29:06):
Zach will be backing them up and two will be
the emergency.
Speaker 17 (29:10):
Uh uh. That was a man that seemed very uncomfortable,
a guy that may be on his way out the
door in Miami as well. Well, we don't get to
it today. Quinn Yours, who has bounced around college football
Ohio State, Texas and was drafted late in the draft
last year. Quinn Ewers gets the call quarterback today. Open

Fore Zach Tednor was on the Miami Dolphins coaching staff
(36:16):
for four seasons, rising to interim offensive coordinator all the
way back in twenty fifteen before he headed out west
to join Sean McVay in the Los Angeles Los Angeles Rams.
There's a connection. Here's another connection in this game. Number
one overall pick in twenty twenty Joe Burrow and as
(36:38):
I mentioned in the last half hour before the draft,
story surfaced last night that before the draft, the Dolphins
offered four first round draft picks to the Bengals, in
exchange for that number one overall pick, and the Bengals
thankfully said no. And then after that, four picks later,
the Dolphins took two at tag of my law. They
(37:01):
passed on Justin Herbert, who went immediately after that, and
they also passed on Jordan Love who went late first round.
And I'm sure that they're thinking about things like that,
or even passing on Jalen Hurts, who went later in
the draft round two, fifty third overall pick. But Tua
(37:24):
is benched today. Tua will not play unless injury dictates.
He is the third quarterback, the emergency quarterback for this game.
You got benched, and he's not happy about it.
Speaker 53 (37:35):
Say I'm disappointed. I think it's normal, it's normal human emotion.
But you know, outside of that, I got to do
my part. My role here right now is to help
whoever the quarterback is going to be for this team,
to lead this team, help in whatever way I can,
(37:56):
you know, to help the team win win this game.
Speaker 17 (37:58):
On Sunday. Yeah, we'll see Quinn yours not long in
the tooth, and quite frankly, I would be surprised if
Al Golden's defense doesn't simply bring it against him, confuse
him in the secondary. Bring it. It hasn't been a
stellar year for Al Golden or his defense, but you
would think they throw everything they got at the kid.

Let's check out the delivery of last week's game, brought
to you by RNL Carriers. Visit ORLC dot com. Make
RNL Carriers your global transportation provider. Look, it didn't score
a point all last week, so the delivery of the
game is probably an infamous one. But nevertheless, let's make
it a Lohi Gilman quarterback a quarterback, I'm sorry for
(38:40):
the for the Baltimore Ravens, a Lohi Gilman takes a
pitch and returns it eighty four yards on an interception return.
So classic play. If it didn't work, it would have
been one of the all time bonehead moves on defense.
But nevertheless, it worked, and off the pitch on an interception,
(39:01):
a Lohi Gilman eighty four yard interception return twenty four
to nothing, Ravens over the Bengals. At CBS Sports, Mike
Renner is their guru when it comes to the draft.
He's already working on twenty twenty six, and unfortunately, that's
what the future holds for the Bengals, not just three
games to finish out the season, but also the twenty
(39:23):
twenty six draft. Mike Renner's Sundays are very busy. Nevertheless,
the Guru is going to carve out some time for
us here on seven hundred WLW today as we continue
with the pregame show and Mike Renner, how are you
on this glorious Sunday.
Speaker 10 (39:38):
I'm doing great. Thanks for having me on. Ken.
Speaker 17 (39:39):
I'm glad you're here because you do see all and
know all about the draft. Now, let me just ask
you this. If you look at the Bengals right now,
we'll get into your mock draft that just came out,
but as you look at the Bengals right now, and
you had the ability to start rebuilding this team, particularly
on the defensive side of the ball, of all the
eleven positions on the defensive side of the ball, regardless
(40:02):
of who's available when when you pick, we're just going
to talk best case scenario. Where would you begin.
Speaker 10 (40:09):
I think defensive tackle.
Speaker 54 (40:11):
I think getting a real impact guy there to make
the linebackers look better, secondary look better, if you can
rush the passer. You know ideally you want edge help too,
but you've used first rounders there to the last three years,
so it'd be hard to say, let's go address that
again in the first round. But defensive tackles where it's like, okay,
(40:32):
we if we we've invested sub draft appital, not a
whole lot, we have some vets, they're kind of aging out.
Speaker 10 (40:40):
I think that's.
Speaker 54 (40:41):
Where one certified dude would really make this whole defense
look a lot better and probably where I look first
to address.
Speaker 17 (40:49):
Yeah, they've tried, right, I mean Chris Jenkins, they tried
with him, McKinley Jackson, they brought bj hillback, but that
has been a chronic problem for them. They also need
edge rusher who knows if Joseph Osaiah is coming back?
And Trey Hendrickson I think confirmed at least in the
in the the Browns family's mind that you don't invest
(41:11):
in players heavily after they turn thirty. Whether that's right
or wrong, that theory for them I think has been
certified with what happened this year with the Trey Hendrickson.
But Ken, if you've got an I at edge that's
available when you pick, and right now you have them
picking top ten in this upcoming draft, what an edge guy,
(41:34):
Trump an interior guy. Even if the edge guy is
a little bit of a reach, I.
Speaker 3 (41:41):
Don't think so.
Speaker 54 (41:42):
I think I still look at her. But out in
this class specifically, there are going to be more edge gaps,
and in this class actually there's a lot of what
I call edge hybrids. There's a lot of guys who
are edge players in college, but they're like two hundred
and seventy five two and eighty five pounds at In
the NFL, that's the defensive tackle nowadays, So there are
(42:03):
a lot of and they sometimes moonlight there, whether it's
Ruben Bain from Miami, whether it's Keldric Fall from Auburn.
That those guys could be NFL dp's and I don't
think anyone bad and I given their body types, so.
Speaker 10 (42:15):
That would be an interesting thought for them.
Speaker 54 (42:17):
Is a guy who could kind of do both, who
could really bridge that gap, and especially with the way
defensive fronts are going in the NFL, you want flexibility
from those guys. Schmar Stewart kind of has a little
bit of that. I don't think bals Murphy does, but
like that's an addition that you could get all three
of them on the field. Then at that point, all
three of those former first hundreds.
Speaker 17 (42:38):
You know, like anything in life, in football, you never
stopped paying for a mistake. And they paid for a
very long time to try and find an answer to
Andrew Whitworth, whom they let go, and we saw what
happened after they let him go. Jesse Bates. They have
tried to figure out a way to replace Jesse Bates
(42:59):
when it would have been just more prudent to hang
on to Jesse Bates. Right now in you're a mock draft,
and I know these things are fluid and we're still
months away from the draft, but you have the Bengals
picking ninth overall in round one, and you have Caleb Downs,
the great safety from Ohio State. And I don't emphasize
the words a great enough when we talk about this guy.
He is. He is the real deal. If Caleb Downs
(43:21):
falls to the Bengals and they are indeed picking ninth overall,
to me, that's a no brainer. Is it a no
brainer to you?
Speaker 10 (43:28):
I think it's pretty much a no brainer.
Speaker 54 (43:30):
The only way again I change that is if either
address safety and free agency, or if you know a
different need position falls to them and something that you
didn't expect. But to me, he's a top ten pick
sword in safety. Those don't come around every year. Probably
the last one was Kyle Hamilton, and he even did
go top ten, even though I can call him top
(43:51):
ten pick.
Speaker 10 (43:52):
But like those guys, you know it when you see it.
Speaker 54 (43:55):
And a lot of Bengals fans probably familiar with Ohio
State as well. It's like he has transform that defense
he transferred from Alabama, his ability to just cover grounds, tackle,
be reliable. It's like all the things we lament this
angle secondary for not being.
Speaker 10 (44:11):
Able to do. He is that guy.
Speaker 17 (44:14):
Yeah, and again a difference maker, There's no question about it.
As I look at your draft, you have the number
one overall pick going to the Jets and that would
be Fernando Mendoza. Mendoza obviously is terrific. This pick is
predicated on a trade with the Giants. The Giants have
Jackson Dart so obviously they're not looking for a quarterback
(44:35):
in this particular draft. But if Mendoza does indeed go
to New York and plays for the Jets, and this
is I guess more I don't know anecdotal than it
is based in evidence, But that's a tough place to
be a quarterback. Mendoza seems like a really young guy.
I mean, he just seems like he comes off as young,
and he comes off as a little naive. I'm afraid
(44:56):
the New York media, in addition to the fan base,
and to eat this guy up if he's not not
successful out of the shoot. Do you think Mendoza could
survive in that environment?
Speaker 54 (45:07):
Actually, you know, me being this draft analyst, just focusing
on you know, the skill set and the fit and
the offense.
Speaker 10 (45:14):
That's not something I had ever even like occurred to me.
But you're right.
Speaker 54 (45:18):
I mean when you watch Mendoza talk and when you
hear him speak about he's very it all comes off
as like nerdy, right, Like he has a very academic
way he looks at the game of football, and yeah,
it's gonna be it's going to a media market where
any of all of those things that he says is
going to be torn apart every which way by millions
(45:39):
of people after every game.
Speaker 10 (45:40):
So yeah, it's not the ideal fit. You know, Ideally
one of.
Speaker 54 (45:43):
Those guys you know kind of seton Herbert I think
has like a similar sort of vibe. I see those
guys go to a small market and you don't really
hear from them, you don't get to hear the quotes
from them, and it doesn't really matter, and then they
can be successful. But yeah, I guess that is the
thing that for him specifically, you might worry about in
a bigger market.
Speaker 17 (45:59):
He's he's obviously wildly talented, but he comes off as
a high school junior. I mean when you just watch
these these interviews, I worry about a little bit. You
have Carnell Tait in your your mock draft going to
the Browns. Of course tit is is just absolutely terrific,
paired up at Ohio State with Jeremiah Smith. But what
in the in in the case of Tate that would
(46:19):
be an inordinate upgrade at wide receiver. Do you think
he'd actually fall to uh to four overall or do
you think that somebody may and that that somebody may
be uh maybe the Titans, I mean they need a
receiver there, the Raiders need a quarterback. You have Dante
Moore going there with a second overall pick. But do
you think the Browns would be tempted enough to take
(46:41):
Tate at four overall?
Speaker 54 (46:44):
I do, and specifically for the Browns. He's just like
what they're missing. They don't have one a guy who
can really make contested catches consistently on the outside. I
mean just last week that Jared Judy like gave the
ball to the cornerback. He's kind of your post boy
for a lack of ball skills at the position, and
he's had a lot of spled to a lot of
(47:04):
incompletions this year. I think don't really have that vertical
threat either. I mean, Isaiah Bond's kind of been, but
he's very small. He's kind of just a vertical threat.
And to me, Carnal takes your number one sort of
X wide receiver on the outside that can win those
routes consistently. So for them specifically, it's not too high.
(47:26):
I mean, just the fact that he's playing next year,
my Smith, I think underrate him. Hembery will be the
second best wide receiver in the country. It's just that
his teammate is the best.
Speaker 17 (47:34):
Yeah, And as you point out in your analysis there,
he has it had a single drop all year. Mike
Renner the draft guru at cbssports dot com. Mike also
a terrific writer about other things in his own right.
We have the Bengals Dolphins later this afternoon. Quinn Yours
is going to quarterback the Dolphins. I'm not sure what
the motivation is there for Mike McDonald other than to
get too of Tago by a little off the field
(47:55):
and on the bench. But as you look at as
you look at this game today, and people tend to
write off games that aren't important to a playoff chase.
The playoffs run everything. But I think this is I
think these next three games are important to the Bengals
to try and get Shamar Stewart on the field, get
some plays under his belt, and to just get Joe
(48:16):
Burrow right again. People say, what do you play at
Burrow for? Well, he's paid to play football, he's paid
to win games. So I'm not writing off these last
three games. But I have limited expectations. Of course. What
about you and this team today against Miami.
Speaker 54 (48:31):
Yeah, I think the first thing you said there about
Shamar Stewart and truly just all these young guys defensively
is what you care about right now, because you know
they have been better from where they're at midseason, when
they're on pace to break the record for most points
aloud or whatever.
Speaker 10 (48:48):
But you want to see.
Speaker 54 (48:50):
Improvement from these young guys because that so we just
kind of talked off the top about this defense. It's
a lot of guys you've drafted highly in the last
four years, a lot of rookie contra So that's why
it's hard to really pinpoint where do you attack, because well,
you're kind of still hoping that this cornerback takes a
step forward, your linebackers that are real his take a
step forward, your first round edges take a step forward.
(49:11):
So it's like, that's what you want to see those
guys take a step forward. These next three games actually
show you something because if not every position of the
defense is truly a need at this point with the
way they've looked this season.
Speaker 17 (49:24):
Boy, if that's not the truth. The truth is what
you get when you want anything related to sports at
cbssports dot com, and here is the purveyor of the
truth on the NFL Draft. Mike Rennert's always great catching
up with you. I know we'll talk down the road.
Merry Christmas to you and your family and for your
time today.
Speaker 10 (49:41):
We thank you, Mary. Christmas to you as well. Ken,
thank you so much.
Speaker 17 (49:44):
That man you bet there he is and he's he's
must must destinate. He must read destination right now. Unfortunately,
but that's where the Bengals find themselves. Yeah, go back
to twenty twenty in that draft on the heels of
a twenty nineteen season, not to resurrect bad memories, but
we all know what the Bengals were in twenty nineteen.
(50:05):
They finished two and fourteen that year, got right down
of the wire in that game against the Dolphins. I
remember vividly as that game went to overtime and Andy
Dalton is standing next to Zach Taylor, rookie head coach,
and they were both kind of laughing, like, Man, if
we messed this thing up and win this game in overtime,
(50:25):
we're gonna We're gonna miss out on Joe Burrow. But
in that draft in twenty twenty, Bengals first Burrow Redskins
they were then known as the Redskins Redskins. Second, Chase
Young Third, Detroit went with a cornerback Jeff Acota Andrew Thomas.
A tackling on a good one from Georgia went to
the Giants fourth overall that year and fifth overall to
(50:48):
the Dolphins was to attack of Ilola you win that
game in Miami and that draft is turned upside down,
but it turned out differently and Burrow fight. The fact
that he says cryptic things now remains with your Cincinnati Bengals.

Nine six News Radio seven hundred WLWRNL carriers pregame show
presented by your Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky Toyota Dealer. Let's Salute,
Salute the Performer of the Week, brought to you by
Crown Royal, the official whiskey of the Bengals, bringing the
spirit to every game this season. Performer of the Week, Well,
(55:52):
it's an interesting thing. Let's let's go back and take
a look. Let's look at receiving. And I want to
highlight a guy that had what I thought was just
a stellar, stellar week, and that was Kyle Pitts side
end Atlanta Falcons. Last week. His team beat the Bucks.
It was a Thursday night game, twenty nine, twenty eight.
(56:14):
In that game, Kyle Pitts Senior eleven receptions, won one
hundred and sixty six yards and three touchdown receptions. Kyle
Pitts sor he's the performer of the week. There's no
question about that. In my mind, when it comes to
catching the ball, mayhaps it will be Jamar Carter, Jamark Chase.
(56:35):
If indeed the Bengals can turn the flame up on
the Dolphins defense today down in Miami, we'll see maybe
so maybe, no, maybe next week. Time to look at
who's hot in the NFL. And that's brought to you
by plumb tight, fast response times and no service fees. Well,
I mean you have your passing leaders, your rushing leaders,
your receiving leaders. How about Miles Garrettles Garrett made a
(57:00):
boatload of money in the offseason, signed that contract, paying
him thirty five thirty six million dollars a year. Miles
Garrett is one sack away from the NFL record for
most sacks in one season that has stood for twenty
four seasons. Michael Strahan has twenty two and a half sacks.
(57:22):
He achieved that in two thousand and one. Miles Garrett
going into today's game at home against Buffalo, Miles Garrett
with twenty one and a half sacks. That's who's hot
in the NFL. You pair that with the Denver Broncos,
who were just absolutely motoring right along, having won eleven
(57:45):
in a Row Denver at home today for a four
o'clock start against Jacksonville, Denver giving three and a half
on that day. Joe Burrow another week, another news conference,
and you know the media in whenever they smell uncertainty
or something that's off, they'll hone in on. It doesn't
(58:07):
matter whether it's Cincinnati, New York, Los Angelesia coll it
doesn't matter. So Burrow, who was talking about not having
fun and almost questioning his longevity in the NFL a
week ago, this week, this past week, was asked, could
you ever envision yourself playing for another team other than
(58:27):
the Cincinnati Bengals. This was Joe's answer.
Speaker 61 (58:31):
Yeah, A lot of crazy things happen every year. Michael
Parsons got traded right before, right before the season. I
think this year that is a something I hadn't seen
in a long time in the NFL. So crazy things
gonna happen.
Speaker 17 (58:52):
It's an honest answer. It's an honest answer. Teams move
on from players they feel are no longer a fit
ownership sometimes change just coaches, sometimes changes. Players sometimes aren't
performing as well as they did early in their career.
I don't think you have any worries about Joe Burrow
going anywhere anytime soon. The Bengals simply will not. They're not.
(59:14):
It's this is a Joe centric team and the analogies
to Carson Palmer don't fit. No, that's that's not happening.
He may be thinking about life and what life will
be like down the road, But for the Bengals, no,
they're thinking about what happens today in Miami. When we
come back. Will be joined by Ian artist Matthew Berry.

they probably have a lot to do with how each
other will perform today. First spotlight Player Miles Murphy. Up
(01:09:39):
until the latter half of this season, Miles Murphy was viewed,
I think by most players, by most people, media, whatever.
I think he was viewed by most people as a
whiff that he hadn't contributed the way a first round
draft pick should contribute, and because of that, there was
great questions about the Bengals going forward at the edge,
(01:10:00):
Trey Hendrickson on a one year deal and Murphy underperforming.
Murphy had two sacks in that game last week against Baltimore,
acquitted himself very well with a lot of other quarterback hurries.
He's in the spotlight today because not only can he
bring the heat. Also, Quinn Ewers is starting from Miami today,
(01:10:21):
not two otagoa loa, and yours making his first NFL start.
We'll probably have, as Sam Weisch used to say about
young players, eyeballs as big as saucer cups. As for yours,
he's excited about today, as you will would almost expect
he would be.

Yeah.

I mean, it's a dream come true for me. I've

Speaker 10 (01:10:53):
I was happy.
Speaker 17 (01:10:54):
Well, we'll see how thankful he is if the Bengals
can tee off on him. But those are our spotlight players.
And we thank again Furniture Fair for being with us
all these games of this season. All Right, we have
a guy that joins us a lot, and I like
Ian Hart. It's for a number of reasons. One he's
a good guy too is Whenever I say Ian can
you can you be on the show? He says, sure, absolutely,
(01:11:16):
dial me up. And that's what we're going to do.
He is with Matthew Berry Fantasy Live before that Pro
Footballfocus dot Com and a guy that knows sports inside out,
but particularly football and oftentimes, as we know in football,
fantasy interjects itself into reality. So I wanted to get
him on today to talk about why things went south
(01:11:37):
with the Bengals this year and is the obvious answer
a little too easy? So let's bring them out in
Ian hartits how are you on this glorious Sunday?
Speaker 71 (01:11:47):
It is a great day to be great. Can always
want to get to talk to you as well, so
appreciate you having me on as always.
Speaker 10 (01:11:52):
And yeah, I would say a tough.
Speaker 71 (01:11:54):
One for the Bangles. Spent a couple of years my
life living in since I'm in Columbus now, so maybe.
Speaker 10 (01:11:59):
Not the same.
Speaker 71 (01:12:00):
But I will say despite again just a down season. Okay,
Joe Burrow, you still like Jamar Chase and as much
as you've been hanging on to Acty last few years,
that still is a pretty darn kick start routes as well?
Speaker 17 (01:12:10):
At when did it fall apart for this team? Is
it too easy to say that it all ended when
Joe Burrow got hurt in game number two of this season.
Game one, they were lucky to be Cleveland. I mean,
the Cleveland kicker missed several significant kicks and Jacksonville had
their way with Cincinnati up until Burrow got hurt, and somehow,
(01:12:33):
some way, you know, the Bengals came back and won
that game. I'm just I'm wondering, is it too easy
to say that this season got torpedoed when Burrow went
down or is that the exact reason why it got
torpedoed more or less?
Speaker 71 (01:12:49):
I think the time when you really had to stop
dreaming about the possibility of Burrow making that return kind
of leading them, you know, back into contention was just
you know, losing those back to back and against jackson
Baar offense, those coint thirty eight plus points on berthaccasion,
that just made it really tough to come back from.
But even with all that in mind, man like the
playoff percentage were starting to look a little bit enticing,
(01:13:10):
you know, around that ten minute mark in that Bill's game.
But unfortunately, you know, a couple of great plays, a
couple of fluxes by that Bill defense turns turn things
around the hurry. So look, I when you have Burrow,
you got Chase, I get it. Sixty minutes of football
and then they can compete with anyone. But just they
the margins are so thin, you know, regarding the air
that they can make. When you just have the defense,
it's going to be giving up thirty five plus to
(01:13:32):
any offense you know what aren't out there. So you know,
Trey Henderson being out for this, you know majority of
the season hasn't helped matter as well. I just think again,
you were you were asking Burrow and Chase and Piegans,
we've been acting to basically have their superman caps on
each and every week to have a chance. And you know,
it's pretty hard to do when you're facing teams like
the Bill like the Ravens, you know, even the Patriots. Now,
just I think when you kind of go to a
(01:13:53):
position group by position group really do hold far more days.
Speaker 17 (01:13:56):
Well, they were failing to address the needs on defense
in the last free agents period in March of twenty
twenty five. I said, look, it's great, you have Burrow,
it's great, you have Chase, Great, you have Higgins, you
got Chase Brown. It's not fantasy football. You've got to
block and you got to tackle in this game to win.
And it's one thing to say that this offense can
(01:14:19):
deliver thirty five, thirty eight points a week. It's another
thing to have to deliver thirty eight points per week.
Everybody said, oh, you're crazy, this team can stay with anybody.
Speaker 7 (01:14:30):
This is that.
Speaker 17 (01:14:30):
No, it isn't, because your offense isn't on every single week. Now,
they did have some games where they delivered forty points
a week and lost, But I do think that this
was a giant miscalculation on their part on the defensive
side of the football.
Speaker 3 (01:14:45):
Would you agree, yeah?
Speaker 71 (01:14:47):
And I mean you look at them last three years,
ever since losing Jesse bas In my thirty first point sets.
Now this year's thirty second just total yards allowed and you.
Speaker 10 (01:14:56):
Want to say, well, how can we not better?
Speaker 3 (01:14:57):
But well, what.
Speaker 71 (01:14:58):
Would make you think they were going to be better overall? Again,
outside of Trey Henderson doing his thing, but when he's
banks up, this is the sixth cheapest defense you know
in the NFL and twenty twenty five and even looking
at twenty twenty six dollars, it only gets worse. So
we do see teams like the Rams and the Charges
out in Massangeles They've done a great job hitting on
a lot of their rookie picks, and they also have
very cheap defenses, and they still managed to actually put
(01:15:19):
forward you know, far better obviously, you know, minis on
the field than what the Bangles have had. So I
think at the group effort, obviously al Bowlden didn't exactly
fix that defense, you know, schematically the way and that
we were hoping. But at the end of the day,
I do tend to lean towards the Timmis and Joe's,
you know, making more of an unpacked many acts, and
that was out there. So man, he just looks after
these last teams after in particular, and almost every single
top one hundred picks has been a whift. And again
(01:15:41):
the injuries play a role, but Krischa mar Stewart not
getting anything going on, Demetrius Night's PFF's third worst. You know,
greater linebackers this year. Haven't seen much from Chris Jacksons
and mckillley Jackson, and then even the offensive line. Then
you know, then fair Child not exactly all pros out there.
Pert Is, I haven't on the freaking team anymore, so
one with after another, I think when you string together.
(01:16:02):
You know, multiple draft clauses in a row. You're not
getting any difference makers. I mean, these are sort of
seasons I catch.
Speaker 24 (01:16:07):
Up to you.
Speaker 17 (01:16:08):
All right, I'm going to anoint you the general manager
of the Bengals just for this moment. Ian Hardens is
the general manager. He reports only to Mike Brown, and
the Bengals are picking. Your team is picking somewhere in
this draft. Probably early teens is where I would put them.
We'll see how the next three weeks go. But early teens,
(01:16:28):
maybe mid teens, that's where you're picking. Where are you
looking for first in the draft to fix this team?
Speaker 71 (01:16:37):
If we have one of those drafts here where the
Bengals have eight picks and they use every single one
on defense, I have Portland warranted at this point because,
again mentioned before, the offensive lineman maybe not playing great,
but in the credit I mean, they've got the run
game going obviously without even having that big devotion of
resources to the running back room Joe Burrow on the season,
we've actually seen the sixth rowest pressure rate overall in
(01:16:59):
the NFL. So we're gonna let the offense rest as is.
And I think again, if we are picking this Matt
lower ten of fifteen range. The dream pick would be
Ohio State Safety killed down Scorf Award a winner, and
just I've seen a lot of you know, the Dame
Burglars and drill class of the world. Actually getting to
Troy Paula moodelcom because I'm sure AFC North Fence if
he has the line you know, nightmares Oven Cincinnati. But
still it would be great to get one of those
(01:17:20):
guys on your squad. Just again, a rangey box safe
and we can go these things and coverage as well,
but just someone who can get I think helps solidify
and just help kind of improve pretty much everyone working
across that defense. The other potential guy who again could
just kind of go sideline the sideline for you would
be another buck Eye Sunny style, someone who actually was
playing safety on his career, get out of Pickerington. And
(01:17:41):
just again, when we talk about freak athletes, amongst freak
athletes like study Pallas really is.
Speaker 24 (01:17:46):
One of them.
Speaker 71 (01:17:46):
So he's really, you know, started to come more into
his own as a true linebackers with these last seasons.
And again just getting some more speed out there, King,
because I think that's one of the bigger issues When
you watch the defense play, there's just no one in
the back end that's actually going sideline the side by
making plays. So yes, everyone, I am a very bias
Clubs Ohio native and so so we take that and
was for us.
Speaker 72 (01:18:05):
But at the same time, we're talking about all Americans here,
and you know guys who I think even a more
neutral fan I would have bet or with your top
fifty picks. So again, Caleb Downs would be the dream,
and I think there is a chance for him to
follow you guys as much as we're going to see
Caleb literally ranked as a top five overall process in
this draft, just kind of the positional value of safety
that makes it so that he might not go in
(01:18:26):
the top ten.
Speaker 71 (01:18:27):
So fingers crossed the down.
Speaker 17 (01:18:28):
Does Ian hard It's general manager of the Bengals attempt
to re sign Trey Hendrickson or has that boat sailed?
Speaker 71 (01:18:37):
I think the boat kilm And the thing is like
when Henderson, even when he was leading the NFL, and
that's not like I was still producing a great defense. Look,
we've seen what happens when he's not out there. They
go bad to literally the worst group in the league.
So not trying to take anything away from Hendrickson, but
in the day, you know, we just turned thirty one
years old, obviously couldn't stay healthy this season. I just
don't think, you know, signing up to give you know,
(01:18:57):
a law and multi year extension to a guy who
you know, for good reasons isn't very happy with your
ownership in the first place. So I think at this point,
whether you can try to get a trade or just
let a walk and hope you get a dec of
compict probably makes more sense. There Again, if you've learned
anything this year, that we're now one player away from
really scrucing up the defense anyway, So hopefully again try
to use that you know, actually thirty forty million and
(01:19:18):
cap space a multiple positions.
Speaker 17 (01:19:20):
As you look at the defense and as you look
at free agency and knowing it is the Bengals and
they are not spend thrift, I mean they are spend
thrifts when it comes to anything that involves signing free agents.
How aggressive would you be, not knowing, of course at
this point of the year, who would be available at
at what price, but how aggressive would you be? Would
(01:19:44):
you would you go overboard? Would the number one guy
that's out there on defense, be it the interier out an,
a edge rusher, a linebacker, whatever it may be. How
aggressive would you be to try and bring in immediate
help because quite frankly, if we just talk about the draft,
I don't know if they can fix that defense inside
of one off season.
Speaker 71 (01:20:05):
Yeah, but at the same time, when you are employing
Burrow and Chase and spending thirty forty million on each
per year, like your window is now, even if it
maybe doesn't look like it's ready to exactly pick up
that slack, So I.
Speaker 10 (01:20:16):
Would be very aggressive.
Speaker 71 (01:20:17):
Look, we have seen turn arounds to four where we
fad like we need the Bengals field from the thirty
second ranked defense the first Okay, we can go to
war with the eighteenth ranked team hopefully has the ball
bounce our way a couple times in January and things
will probably be good enough there. So I would be
again just all in on this window and trying to
make the most out of it. So whether that's going
to be you know, really I don't looking at the
(01:20:38):
free agents right now, and you're right, it is early.
And Andrewson is probably going to be the guy headline
in the class anyway, So I don't know about completely,
you know, emptying the cliff on just one of these
edge rushers, trying to get it all there, but again
trying to bring him four or five potential difference makers.
Maybe more so in that eight to twelve million annual
salary range would make a little bit more sense to me.
So I will say, you know, just when you look
(01:20:59):
at free agency, a lot of time teams I think
when they do mess up, it is trying to spend
up on that wide receiver or on that quarterback who,
let's say, if they were better, probably wouldn't behave the
open park in the first place. We do see teams
manage to have a bigger you know, overhaul and turnaround
successfully in free agency when we are looking at the
more line of scrimmage and defensive typosition. So I am
(01:21:20):
optimistic again they could maybe go come horrific to just
below average and here if their offense is going to
be great, hopefully that's enough.
Speaker 17 (01:21:26):
Hopefully Ian Hard It's Matthew Berry Fantasy Live, our guest.
They get quinn Ewers today in Miami, as the Dolphins
apparently have moved on from to at tag of Iloa.
It sounds like it's going to be a a pricey
way to move on. But nevertheless he's done and here
comes youwers who had success in college but not so
(01:21:47):
much so far in the NFL. What are you expecting
today in Miami? The line on this game is like,
I think it's gone to Bengals minus four and a half.
What are you expecting in this game today?
Speaker 3 (01:22:00):
Be a very ugly.
Speaker 71 (01:22:00):
Football game, But I'm hopefing that a bang will you
see that will give us an offense the highlights the
fend with yours and maybe he does turn around. This
was a guy who I think coming out of high
school was twenty four to seven sports like number one
that waited the quarterback. Ever, so obviously you know anyone
has lost in my textas over the years kind of
knows is the radicness out there. So not expecting too
(01:22:21):
much of yours. But then again, I mean watching two
of the course of the past no year or two
really has been striking just how much he's fallen off.
I never got behind, you know, actually ranking two up
there with the Justin Herberts and Joe Burrows. But twenty
twenty two and twenty twenty three, I mean he still
was playing like an above average quarterback by pretty much
any metric you want to look at. So very disappointing
to see it again. What's kind of happened with Tua?
(01:22:42):
Maybe yours, you know, can go ahead and give us something.
I'm to the point we're not going to see that
Dak Wilson experienced him because as much as I'm look,
Doc Wilson's the bus, he's a terrible quarterback.
Speaker 73 (01:22:52):
I did it.
Speaker 71 (01:22:52):
But see as that fun bad quarterback. Okay, he's kind
of got that, you know, they were actual confidence. He's
got the mobility to move around and at least make
you laugh at you too. Another interception, So that's my
one disappointment there. But overall, I'mtobner was a big place
from Furrow Casey Bocha.
Speaker 17 (01:23:09):
Dan Marino in his present state I think might be
a better option than Zach Wilson. But that's why they
play the games, right.
Speaker 71 (01:23:21):
That would be something man. Ever, since you know, Philip
Rivers came out for the Colts, I saw a couple
of Jack liars man actually adding Maurice Jones Drew on
Twitter and hey man, I could you come back and play?
He said, oh heck, And they had that Uh, you
know that commercials from going around with Marino and Smith
and Jerry Rice going out there. Maybe it's a little
(01:23:42):
more realistic than.
Speaker 24 (01:23:43):
We gave it.
Speaker 17 (01:23:43):
Yeah, maybe so maybe so. Ian Harte, you have a
merry Christmas, and you know we'll be calling down the road.
But for your time today, we appreciate it, my friend.
Speaker 71 (01:23:53):
Appreciate you.
Speaker 24 (01:23:55):
You bet.
Speaker 17 (01:23:56):
Can you imagine some of these former NFL players coming
out of retirement, who would be the number one Bengal
you'd like to see coming out of retirement to the
rescue for these final three games? How about Carlos Dunlap
but Gino Atkins get a little heat on the quarterback
(01:24:20):
probably like no, I'm dude, We're done. It's coming up
on ten twenty five. We're counting down to the Bengals
and the Dolphins. That's a one o'clock kickoff right on
both of these radio stations, and it'll be Dan Horde
and Dave Lapham as per usual on all of the
play by play. As for us, you're listening to the

the most fascinating player in free agency. A big slugger,
strikes out a lot, his defenses and all that great.
But nevertheless, two year contract which means he'll be a

couple of years in the in the majors will clear

I forgot He's got five, five games. He is convinced
that will come home as winners for you. Here's what
happened on this date in Cincinnati sports history. It's brought
to you by Pedal Windows and Doors Making life brighter
Pella now Hey. Later, on this date, December the twenty first,
(01:36:12):
all the way back in nineteen hundred and seventy five,
the Bengals were playing the San Diego Chargers. I'm sorry
nineteen seventy three Bengals San Diego Chargers and Cincinnati runs
away with a forty seven to seven win. Ken Anderson
(01:36:33):
three touchdowns and a rushing touchdown, and Cincinnati ended the
regular season eleven and three. They lost to Oakland the
following week in the playoffs. Big offensive day for Ken
Anderson in the Bengals offense on this date, December the
twenty first, in nineteen seventy five, fifty years ago, the
(01:36:55):
Cincinnati Stingers of the World Hockey Association took on the
Quebec Nord Deeks at Riverfront Conlisseum and in a wild game,
skated away with an eleven to seven win, eighteen total
goals in the game. Brian Campbell. Brian Campbell, they called
him Soupy. He War number seven. Brian Soupe Campbell two goals,
(01:37:17):
three assists, and a not so robust crowd of five thousand,
three hundred and ninety two soaked it all up and
on this state. In nineteen hundred and sixty eight, the
Cincinnati Royals went to San Diego to play the Rockets. Royals,
of course, no longer in existence. They have moved on
(01:37:38):
through a number of incarnations. They are now the Sacramento Kings.
They took on the San Diego Rockets. Of course, the
Rockets are no longer in San Diego. In any event,
the Rockets come along and come away with a one
hundred thirty two to one hundred and twenty four win
Oscar forty eight minutes, thirty nine points. That is among
(01:38:03):
the many things that happened on this date in Cincinnati
sports history. All right, Lee Sterling, Paramount Sports. He's had
a big year. He's had a big year with us.
He is in Miami, that's where he's based. And Lee
is going to the game today. If you're going to
the game. If you're listening on the iHeartRadio app and
you're down in Miami, look for Lee Sterling. But he's
(01:38:25):
standing by to join us right now as we handicap
some hopefully winners in the NFL today. And Lee, how
are you of this glorious game day?
Speaker 24 (01:38:33):
I am good and getting ready to head over there
in just a few minutes to the to a little
bit of tailgating, hopefully a lot of tailgating. I probably
might be smarter just to stay in the tailgate section
rather than going into the stadium, but I'll do a
little bit of both.
Speaker 17 (01:38:51):
You realize you said last week on this radio station
that anybody that was listening and they go down to
the game, the first beer is on you. You remember
that right there. I'm ready.
Speaker 24 (01:39:00):
I'm ready.
Speaker 17 (01:39:01):
We'll get to twenty lot twenty. We'll get to that
Titanic matchup in a moment. I want to go inside
the division. Steelers eight and six at Lions eight and six.
Lions are giving seven. Pittsburgh controls its own destiny inside
the division, but the Lions are currently on the outside.
Look at it right now at the playoffs. This game
event against Pittsburgh at Minnesota and that at Chicago to
(01:39:22):
finish the season. This is a big game for both teams,
but do you I think even more so for the Lions,
don't you?
Speaker 24 (01:39:28):
It is, but I think they're going to make this
is a great matchup for them. Why do I say
that they're playing a Steelers team that you know, if
you're looking for kudos beating the Dolphins and cold weather,
they're not going to get it. They also always went
on Monday, So anyone who is betting the Dolphins on Monday,
maybe they should think about quitting the street. I mean
(01:39:52):
they can run the football. Number five rushing offense, number
three in passing offense. They got weapons all across the board.
Speaker 10 (01:39:59):
You didn't forget about.
Speaker 24 (01:40:00):
Think one of the best tight ends. So how is
Pittsburgh going to stop him? It's gonna be touugh without TJ.
Speaker 17 (01:40:06):
Watt.
Speaker 24 (01:40:07):
The Steelers offense barely averages more first downs than the Jets.
Believe it or not, only seventeen point one first downs
per game, and the defense allows as many as Washington,
Arizona in Dallas, near the bottom of the totem polt
twenty one point nine first downs per game. Here, I
know the Lions are playing to stay alive here. But
(01:40:30):
I think they're going to get it done here. I
don't think Pittsburgh's offense is built to trade scores here
Detroit thirty four.
Speaker 17 (01:40:37):
To twenty three, thirty four to twenty three Lions. Well,
if that happens, then new life for the Ravens, who
are at home today giving three to the Patriots. But
hang on a second, the Patriots, there's six and oh
on the road this season, six and zero on the road,
one game up on Buffalo with three to go, and
so from that standpoint, it's a big game for the Patriots.
How do you see this one?
Speaker 71 (01:40:58):
Yeah?
Speaker 17 (01:40:58):
And they were three and fourteen.
Speaker 24 (01:41:00):
Year to expect them to all of a sudden go
from three and fourteen to running away with the division,
I think it was asking too much. My wife came
in and popped her head, and when Buffalo's trailing twenty
one nothing, she goes, who do you have here, Buffalo?
And she goes, well, not looking good. I said, not
over yet, and sure enough came starming back. So it's
(01:41:22):
baby steps. You know you're not going to, you know,
all of a sudden be a champion. You've got to
go through some adversity here.
Speaker 10 (01:41:29):
And the thing is that Baltimore.
Speaker 24 (01:41:31):
I don't think Baltimore is that good and they're not
ain't close to where they were last year. Lamar Jackson
is afraid to run, just two rushes last week, drop
passes all over the field. All his receivers seems like
don't want to hold onto the ball right now. Drake
May I think is a better runner and the better
passer than Lamar Jackson. And I think he has the
most explosive player in Trevian Henderson. I don't know why
(01:41:54):
he's only carrying the ball about sixty four percent of
the time compared to the other backs. They put Stevenson
in from three, four to five carry stops a game. Here,
it's fifty six and fifty two yard touchdown burst last
week here, I think the wrong TAM's favorite. Give me
New England here, stupour.
Speaker 17 (01:42:14):
Twenty seven to twenty four. Don't worry about the points
Patriots now. Look, any game can be the best game
of the week. Look at Thursday Night. But I'm telling
you this Jaguars Broncos game is shaping up.
Speaker 20 (01:42:25):
To be that way.
Speaker 17 (01:42:27):
Five in a row for the Jags, eleven straight for
Denver Jags inside the red zone are money this season.
Here are the Broncos at home giving three and a
half to the Jaguars. This could be the game of
the daily Yes, and.
Speaker 10 (01:42:43):
No one saw this coming here.
Speaker 17 (01:42:45):
So here's the situation with jack Ville.
Speaker 24 (01:42:47):
Are they improved, Absolutely, they won five straight and they
covered five straight. But look who they played. They beat
the Jets last week. Trevor Lawrence had six touchdown passes.
He may not have six touchdown passes the rest.
Speaker 71 (01:42:59):
Of the season.
Speaker 24 (01:43:00):
And now they got to go all the way out West,
played a mile high, got to face the number three
run defense. That's going to be troublesome if they can't
run the ball. I got to throw the ball. And Denver,
as we know, has one of the top two or
three pass rushes, and they got cornerbacks and safeties that
can cover like no other. And then on top of that,
bone Nicks all of a sudden, he's starting to put
(01:43:21):
it together. I mean, Sean Payton gradually allowing that leash
to grow here and he's not even running much. So
I just think this is the game where Trevor Lawrence
shows two or three interceptions.
Speaker 10 (01:43:33):
I like Denver big here thirty to.
Speaker 17 (01:43:35):
Thirteen thirty thirteen Broncos to blow them out. Don't worry
about the three and a half. It's fading fast on Indianapolis.
I mean, yeah, the Philip Rivers is a nice story.
They're home today against the forty nine ers, and that
NFC West is that conference is just brutal. I mean
it's exceptional, but it's brutal. Colts are getting five and
(01:43:57):
a half, but they've lost four in a row. Oh
and again they're fading at this point. So here they
are at home and a must win for them to
stay alive in a playoff race against the forty nine ers,
who are duking it out with three other two other
teams in the NFC West.
Speaker 20 (01:44:12):
What do you think?
Speaker 24 (01:44:13):
Yeah, I think this is a great set up for
San Francisco because they've seen what Indianapolis has to offer.
David defensive coordinator Robert salav one of the best, I mean,
so he's going to be able to figure out pretty
easily how to defend Philip Rivers here. And I just
don't think Indianapolis's defense can play as hard and as
efficient as they did last week in Seattle. They know
(01:44:36):
Seattle's running game, which is good to fifty yards on
twenty two carries. Here San Francisco wins and covers twenty
seven to seventeen, they'd.
Speaker 17 (01:44:44):
Go to eleven and four, eleven and four if they win.
All right, Lee's Golden Ticket here we are. We're closing
it on Christmas. The Golden ticket is still golden. What
do we have now between now and the end of
December with the Golden ticket?
Speaker 20 (01:45:00):
You want to get involved.
Speaker 24 (01:45:01):
It's five selections from today all the way through the
end of the season and three weeks five this week, five,
next week five, final week of the season January fourth,
just one hundred and forty seven dollars almost sixty five percent.
We're hitting over the last thirteen weeks. So Lea's NFL

Speaker 17 (01:45:32):
I don't want to mix message, but you do everything.
It's we're talking NFL today, But you do college football,
the playoffser here, you do you UFC, you do hockey,
you do basketball. I mean, it's one stop shopping right,

Speaker 10 (01:45:46):
That's it.
Speaker 24 (01:45:46):
That's it. We don't get much rest, but we're going
to take care of you.
Speaker 10 (01:45:51):
Certainly do that for you, all right.
Speaker 17 (01:45:53):
So you are going to this Bengals Dolphins game today.
Both teams are out of it. Miami is benched to
Quinn Ewers at quarterback for the Dolphins. And Joe Burrow,
I mean, it seems like every time he opens his
mouth now he says something cryptically about himself. He did
it again this week. The Bengals look horrible last weekly,
as you well know, and here they are against the Dolphins.
(01:46:15):
Dolphins were playing well until last week, then they hit
the bricks in Pittsburgh. So, I mean, I don't know,
how do you look at this with the Dolphins getting
four at home and starting a guy at quarterback who's
not started the game in his life in the NFL.
Speaker 24 (01:46:29):
Well, I did some in preseason. I think they might
rally around him a little bit. The thing we do
know is going to be playing not a very good
Cincinnati defense, but I think Joe Burrow is going to
be able to He rarely has two bad games in
a row. So the weather looks to be perfect here
fast track. The one thing is Miami does have a
winning record straight up and against the spread at home,
(01:46:52):
so we know they're able to do much much better
at home.
Speaker 17 (01:46:56):
Fourth road game and six chances here.
Speaker 24 (01:46:58):
For Cincinnati, this scion's moved from two and a half
to four and a half to five. I think Cincinnati
wins the game here twenty eight, twenty six, but I'm
going to take the four and a half points in Miami.
Speaker 71 (01:47:10):
Put two bad teams together, it'll.
Speaker 24 (01:47:11):
Probably come down to maybe one play at the end,
either a made field goal, missed field goal, or a
team inside the five yard line trying to put it in.
So I think it's gonna be entertaining. You know, feats
are cheap. If anyone's in the area, head on over
Lot twenty just one place. Paramount sports dot com first

Speaker 17 (01:47:32):

Speaker 24 (01:47:36):
Jess will I will be wearing an old school Miami
Miami Aqua polo shirt, so look for the logo on
my left chest. Don't wear anything new.
Speaker 17 (01:47:48):
Nothing new, nothing that new logo.
Speaker 80 (01:47:51):
Since Stephen Ross takeover, it doesn't exist in my book.
Speaker 17 (01:47:55):
Hey lady, Merry Christmas, Happy holidays. We'll talk thanks week,
Stay well, my friend.
Speaker 10 (01:47:59):
Thanks, yeah, you two.
Speaker 17 (01:48:03):
Yeah, it's interesting. This game could be an absolute mess
in terms of performance. Mikah Fitzpatrick, the safety, the aging
safety for the Dolphins is out. They've got a bunch
of players questionable. DJ Turner, best corner on the Bengals roster, yesterday,
popped up on the injury report after a full week
of practice. He's now questionable. They didn't say why. He's questionable,
(01:48:26):
but questionable in NFL parlance, means uncertain if the player
will play. You've got no offense. The tight end is out,
You've got Charlie Jones, the return guy continues to be
out with an ankle problem. And you have Joseph Osai out.
So you have all of that and then some questionable
(01:48:49):
guys on that Bengals roster and two teams that are
out of it. Let's see who answers the bell strongly.
The difference could be the quarterback. I mean, Quinn yours
first NFL regular season dart, but he's at home. It's warm.
It's been cold here. When you go from cold to
(01:49:09):
warmth or warmth to cold. The team that is doing
the traveling is always the team that is at a disadvantage. Nevertheless,
Bengals are a better team, even if they haven't showed it.
If you just look at the rosters, they're a better team.
But with those players out, it could throw everything into
a bit of a jumble. More on that coming up.
(01:49:30):

(01:54:13):
through Paul Danner junior at the Athletic that Zach Taylor
does not have one year left on his contract. He
actually has two two years left on his contract. And
so when the media gathered to question Zach on this
week's game, the contract was like the first thing that
was brought up. You know, can you confirm that? Can
(01:54:36):
you confirm that it's two more years?
Speaker 49 (01:54:38):
Here?
Speaker 17 (01:54:38):
We all thought it was one year until you know,
Danner dug this piece of information up. Here's what Taylor said.
Speaker 39 (01:54:44):
I don't think it won't matters. I coach every day
like it's my last. And I've been through years in
twenty nineteen, twenty twenty that were literally you coach every
game thinking it could be your last game. And I've
seen how we responded after that. Twenty one twenty two
compete for division titles and championships, and so this year
is no different for me. It's going through adversity coaching
every game in this profession like it could be your
(01:55:06):
last one. I have a lot of confidence in our
staff that we're going to get this turned around and
we're going to finish the season really strong and put
together a great plan to get back to those championships
I mentioned.
Speaker 17 (01:55:16):
So very confident we can do all that well. I mean,
why would he feel otherwise, right, I mean why would
he feel otherwise. If he felt otherwise, he probably shouldn't
be there in the first place. But the problems that
this franchise has run deeper than the coach.
Speaker 20 (01:55:30):
I mean, yeah, you.
Speaker 17 (01:55:31):
Could run an idea past management ownership. Now, maybe Zach
shouldn't call his plays, maybe he should just be a
quote unquote head coach. I mean, I guess that's one
thing you could look at, or yeah, maybe there's a
time and a place and maybe this is the time
and the place to move on from the de facto
(01:55:52):
general manager Duke Tobin. But that's not happening. This is
a run it back organization, as you just heard, and
you know it's happened before they went to the super Bowl.
They ran it back the next year. They came within
a couple of bonehead plays, bad punt, hitting a guy
out of bounds from going back to the super Bowl again.
(01:56:13):
But even Burrow knows there's got to be changes in
this off season or what's the point.
Speaker 61 (01:56:19):
I have a lot of confidence and and everybody that's
putting together the plans for us weekend and week out,
that's time to say that changes don't need to be made.
Not saying personnel or people. I'm just saying, you know,
what we've been doing hasn't worked the last couple of years,
(01:56:41):
so you know, we have to think outside the box
and get creative about where we go from here.
Speaker 17 (01:56:48):
Everybody's caught, they got confidence and everybody, by the way,
there was not a woodpecker that was in the conference room.
That was somebody on a laptop banging away. Don't know
why we have to hear that, but nevertheless, Yeah, everybody's
got confidence in everybody else. And Borrow got exactly what
he wanted last offseason. He got Jamar, he got Tee
signed the long term deals, he got Gasicki signed up,
(01:57:10):
he got Hendrickson signed up. It didn't work for whatever reason,
largely because he got hurt. And that's where they are
today in Miami, eliminated. But it does not mean that
there is not something to play for. And you're playing
for besides pride, besides a paycheck. You're playing for another
(01:57:32):
team to see what you may be able to do
for them. Because the changes will involve personnel, if not
front of office and coaching. So maybe the players, a
lot of them that are here right now won't be
here next year. Well, they're still looking for a job
in football. So you damn well better not lit up
in the final three games. I mean, here's the guy
that I think has been right place, right time for
(01:57:54):
this team all season long, Jordan Battle, starting safety. He
knows what today means, no.
Speaker 87 (01:58:00):
Matter the circumstances. And obviously you know the playoffs there
nine to no more. But anytime you get a win,
that's that's good for your pride, you know, good for
your for your manhood.
Speaker 76 (01:58:09):
You know.
Speaker 87 (01:58:09):
We you know, we're a group of guys you know
who who hate losing, you know, and losing doesn't feel good,
you know.
Speaker 17 (01:58:16):
But and you win, obviously you feel better going home.
And that brings us to how every piece is important,
brought to you by Donato's Pizza. Where every piece is important.
Donado's the official pizza of the Bengals. It's a lot
of pieces. I'm gonna start with the captains of this team.
This is when you step up. This is when Burrow
steps up. This is when you galvanize a locker room
(01:58:38):
and say, look, this ain't going away. We thought it's
going to go. But we still have ourselves, we still
have our fans, and we still have our team to represent.
Go out there and do it the right way. Play
today like it matters. Play today like it matters whether
or not you go to the playoffs, even if it
(01:58:58):
does not. So the pieces are many. They're the captains.
That's why they elect you captain. Standing by to join us.

Speaker 62 (02:00:07):
The statute requires the so called Department of Justice at
this moment, within fifteen days to provide a written explanation

they've withheld certain documents. We expect that that written justification
should be transmitted within the next week or so, and
then Congress can take it from there as it relates

fifteen interceptions, and he doesn't seem to be reading rushes
all that well. He's been sacked thirty times. Yours only
has five completions and eight attempts in a fill in
role this year. But there are other weapons that the
(02:06:51):
Dolphins have, starting with Devon a Chain eleven hundred and
eighty six yards so far this year, seven touchdowns. He
doesn't put the ball on the ground. He's only fumbled
once and when the quarterback Crows. He's got Jim and
Wattle Watta with eight hundred receiving yards this year, six touchdowns,
thirteen big plays, that's plays of twenty or more yards.
(02:07:14):
Tyreek Hill is out. That was a major problem early
on with the Dolphins this season, and now it sounds
like they're trying to run them out of Miami. Tight
end is serviceable. We've been around a while. He's not bad,
Darren Waller, but it's not like this is a offensive juggernaut.
That's one of the reasons why it appears that the
(02:07:37):
coach is on the hot seat and the quarterback is out.
So with all of those changes and with a new quarterback,
at least for Zach Taylor, this is a tough team
to prepare for.
Speaker 39 (02:07:47):
But it's a very difficult offense regardless of who the
quarterback is. They put a lot of stressing in the
run game. They do a great job getting guys open
with a lot of speed in the past game that
can finish on explosive plays, and so it's a very
ranging group to go against.
Speaker 17 (02:08:01):
And on the Bengal side of things, it's been an
interesting couple of weeks for Joe Burrow. Of course, last
week was I would say, I don't know if anybody
would disagree. If you do, feel free to this is
the worst game he's played as a Cincinnati Bengal. That
was on the heels of comments he made a week
ago Wednesday about not having fun and how if he's
(02:08:22):
not having fun, what am I doing? That led to
an uproar, and then this week the topic was raised.
You know, I mean, could you ever envision yourself like
at some point not playing for the Bengals? And his
answer was, well, crazy things happen in the NFL. Well,
they do, but he's here, right here, right now. But
something else just doesn't seem to be clicking with him
(02:08:43):
right now. I don't know what that is, but to
say those kinds of things would mean that he's doing
a lot of thinking and not thinking about football is
not a good thing at this time of the year. Nevertheless,
I'm done reading minds. I stopped that along time time ago.
I know one of the best minds in journalist is
about to journalism is about to join us. John Breach
(02:09:06):
is one of the top sports writers in this country
and writes for cbssports dot Com. And it's a good
day when we can get John on the ear to
talk football, and that's exactly what he's going to do
right now. And John Breach, how are you on this
glorious Sunday.
Speaker 45 (02:09:21):
I am fantastic can Sunday before Christmas? Got to get
some Christmas shopping done, but I always have time to
talk to you.
Speaker 17 (02:09:28):
There will be no crowds at Kenwood Town Center, trust
me on that one. You could go anytime you want
between now and Christmas. Oh well, that's why God invented Amazon.
Speaker 24 (02:09:38):
All right.
Speaker 17 (02:09:39):
Look, so Joe Burrow last week he starts talking out
loud about how it's not fun anymore, and this and
that and now. Joe Burrow chooses his words carefully. I
think he's a thoughtful person. And some thought that maybe
he was delivering some sort of message with that, and
I looked at it as a twenty nine year old guy,
(02:09:59):
and I've been around twenty nine year olds just venting.
I just say he was venting. I agree, you know,
he's deep. He doesn't say things capriciously, but I just
thought it was venting last week about how he's just
you know, it just isn't fun. But all of a
sudden it explodes into something like Oh my god, Joe
Burrow may retire. He may be the next Andrew Love.
What did you how did you view what he said
(02:10:20):
last week before we get to what he said this week, Well, it.
Speaker 45 (02:10:23):
Certainly was interesting, just because he went to that press
conference and he was kind of on a downer. You know,
it was his birthday. Some people don't like their birthday.
Some people just want the day to be over. And
so just the way he carried himself, the words he used,
because you never want to hear someone, especially a franchise quarterback,
say hey, I don't know if I'm gonna I'm having
(02:10:45):
fun here anymore. I'm having fun doing this because that's
why you play the game. And that's that is kind
of what Andrew Luck said toward the end of his career.
So it wasn't completely crazy for people to make that comparison.
Certainly understand why they did. But you know, Joe Burrow
wants to win, and that's really what it feels like,
(02:11:07):
is that that is what is weighing on him. The
fact that he's been injured is weighing on him, and
I think really the big issue is that he works
so hard to get back so quickly we're talking about.
The original thought was that he wouldn't be back until
mid December. He made it back by Thanksgiving, and he
goes through all that rehab, gets back and boom, within
(02:11:29):
two games, the Bengals are out of the playoff race.
They're eliminated.
Speaker 10 (02:11:33):
It's all over.
Speaker 45 (02:11:34):
And so I think that was wearing on him that
he spent all that time to get back and now
the rug's been pulled out from under you and you're
essentially eliminated, which is what happened after that Bill's lost.
They weren't fully eliminated, but it was pretty much all
over at that point. And then Burrow had that press
conference that following Wednesday, and you could just kind of
see it on a space.
Speaker 17 (02:11:54):
But he didn't walk in to that news conference and
sit down and saying I'm not having fun. He was
asked a question, and my feeling is is that he probably,
for all the reasons that you just outlined, was down.
I mean, birthdays are different for different people. My gosh,
will he turns fifty. But the fact of the matter
(02:12:14):
is the fact of the matter is he didn't come
in there with guns blazing. He was asked the question,
and yeah, it's not fun. And I don't know, And
you asked him that same question maybe next week and
you'll get a different answer. I mean, it's just the
way people are. I think it's human nature, don't you.
Speaker 45 (02:12:30):
Yeah, absolutely, And I think the unique thing about Joe
Burrow that you really don't get a lot of in
today's NFL is that when he answers a question, he's
very honest. He's very open, and I don't think he
worries about the consequences are what people might think of
his words and the fact that we're parsing through all
of them and breaking it down and trying to figure
(02:12:52):
out what this means for his future. He just one
of the few guys that is brutally honest as what's
on his mind and asks what's gonna happen?
Speaker 3 (02:13:01):
Sometimes that you're gonna.
Speaker 45 (02:13:02):
Get answers like this where oh, no, Joe Burrow wants
to leave Cincinnati or Joe Burrow is going to retire.
Is that's just the nature of how he answers this question.
So I certainly I like the fact that he is
absolutely open and that he does say what is on
his mind. Maybe that's not a great thing for fans
who are going to.
Speaker 80 (02:13:20):
Panic every time Joe Burrow has a press conference.
Speaker 45 (02:13:23):
Conference from now on, Well, Keith on our contract through
twenty twenty nine. I would be absolutely stunned if he
was not playing through that entire contract.
Speaker 17 (02:13:32):
John, you grew up in a house where you fully
well knew at a very young age, and Mike Brown
doesn't do anything that Mike Brown doesn't want to do
for the betterment of the team, And getting rid of
or trading Joe Burrow isn't there, and making Joe Burrow
happy is there. So I just to me, I just
think that, you know, I just think he's down, like
(02:13:53):
you know, the team is down, like the city is down.
But now we get to what he said this past week,
where he's going to going to play for a long time.
But he's also thought about the possibility of leaving the
Bengals at some point. Well, who wouldn't you have the
ability now in the business, unlike when your dad played
and even when Boomer was here, that you can go
anywhere to any team and you can make a lot
(02:14:15):
of money if you're a free agent. So yeah, the
possibilities certainly would have had to have crossed his mind,
you know, it crosses everybody's mind. Your business, my business.
And again, I don't think it's anything that's calculated. I
think if he wants to say these things saml Sam
to Katie Blackburnard and Mike Brown, he probably already has.
So I'm sure he's thought about the possibility of change
(02:14:37):
in his life at some point. He'd be foolish not to.
But I'm not sure that's that's a big deal, is it.
Speaker 24 (02:14:42):
Yeah, I'm not sure it is.
Speaker 80 (02:14:44):
And that was basically Joe Burrows asked, Hey, do you plan.
Speaker 45 (02:14:47):
On being the core you point on not being the
quarterback in Cincinnatia at some point in your career, and
he said, you think about a lot of things.
Speaker 24 (02:14:54):
Now.
Speaker 45 (02:14:55):
The interesting thing there is that he also gave that
same exact answer when he was asked if you thought
about retirement. You think about a lot of things. But
we're not sitting here and talking about it maybe retiring.
We're talking about him maybe leaving the Bengals, because that's
just what Joe Burrow says.
Speaker 3 (02:15:09):
He does think about a lot of things.
Speaker 45 (02:15:10):
And like you just said, I am it is almost
certain that he probably says the same thing to ownership.
Speaker 3 (02:15:17):
He just doesn't really have a filter.
Speaker 10 (02:15:18):
He thinks deeply about what he says, and then he
says it.
Speaker 45 (02:15:22):
I think the important thing to remember about his most
recent press conference is that he was talking about a
lot of things. He was talking about the fact that
he wants to play until forty. He wants to emulate
guys like Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, and of course,
you know those are two of the best quarterbacks ever.
He mentioned Drew Breese, he mentioned Aaron Rodgers. All those
guys played for multiple teams in his career. So I
(02:15:43):
think he was just kind of saying, hey, look, crazy
things happen in the nfls. You don't know that you're
going to be in the same place forever. Most guys aren't.
Speaker 80 (02:15:52):
He specifically mentioned Michael Parsons.
Speaker 45 (02:15:53):
Getting trade and how he was shocked by that trade,
and so it is the NFL, and sometimes eventually you
either wear you're welcome or the team find something shinier
and brighter. Maybe that's eight years down the road, and
that's just the nature of the league. So I don't
think it's crazy for Burrow to think, hey, look, maybe
I won't be here forever, but surely it's possible.
Speaker 3 (02:16:15):
He planned to be here for another ten years before
maybe leaving.
Speaker 17 (02:16:18):
Yeah, again, these are questions that are asked. He didn't
walk in and sit down and start spouting this stuff off.
And it's a beauty. I think that a lot of
the writers in this town should embrace. It's like when
Boomer was here years ago, there was nobody more honest
about his assessment of things than Boomer is Sias and
this is kind of like what Boomer did thirty five
years ago when he was here. But nevertheless, Joe Burrow
(02:16:41):
is in much better shape right now than two at
taga Iloa. This game today opened at Bengals minus two.
It's now Bengals minus four and a half, largely because
they've made the quarterback switch in Miami and Tua got benched.
His coach was pretty blunt. He said, look, I'm doing
this because we're not getting the production out of the
quarter that we need. I'm not sure quinn Ewers is
(02:17:02):
the answer, But what do you expect that happened? What
do you expect that does to the Miami offense?
Speaker 45 (02:17:08):
Well, it's interesting that the Dolphins made this decision right now,
because I think if you're benching to he obviously he's
not in their long term plans now, so at some
point you're going to probably get rid of him. But
he has that huge, huge tap hit in twenty twenty six,
and so it's just thinking about trading him, which maybe
(02:17:29):
is your only realistic option, and you probably have to
pay some of his salary for twenty twenty six to
get that deal done.
Speaker 3 (02:17:34):
Then you would want him out on the field to
kind of get his.
Speaker 80 (02:17:39):
Trade compensation make teams say oh, okay to it.
Speaker 10 (02:17:42):
Can still play. So we know he played in Pittsburgh two.
Speaker 3 (02:17:44):
A time of low it's horrible in cold weather.
Speaker 10 (02:17:47):
It was twenty degrees in Pittsburgh.
Speaker 45 (02:17:48):
But now you have two home games coming up in
Miami against the Bengals obviously tonight or today, and then
against the Buccaneers next week, and then they close against
the Patriots, and so it's just weird because again, if
you want to see your quarterback, maybe Tour could play
well against the Bengals.
Speaker 80 (02:18:03):
We've seen what the Bengals defense has been this year.
Speaker 45 (02:18:06):
So the flip side of that is Quinn yours answer
your question again is that if you're going to start
a rookie quarterback.
Speaker 80 (02:18:13):
At this point in the season, I'm sure Mike McDaniels.
Speaker 45 (02:18:15):
Said, maybe this looks like a defense we could maybe
have some success against. Because the whole thing if you're
starting a rookie quarterback is that you want them to
be comfortable. You want to make sure they're successful. Early
screen passes, little short throws build their confidence up. And
so I'm guessing that's what Mike McDaniel's thinking is that
this is a defense I think our rookie can have
(02:18:36):
some success against.
Speaker 17 (02:18:38):
The number the total on this game is fifty and
a half, So I guess the smart guys are expecting
a lot of points in this game today. What about you.
Speaker 45 (02:18:47):
Yeah, Look, I think that we talked about Joe Burrow already.
If there is one thing that one other takeaway from
that press conference on Wednesday is that Joe Burrow was
very upset with his performance again the Ravens, and he
said it's an outlier. This is not something that's going
to happen again. So he seems pretty determined to go
(02:19:08):
out and just throw for five hundred yards against the Dolphins.
That's really what it felt like. So I will not
be surprised if Burrow has a huge game, and so
if you're the Bengals and you score thirty thirty five points,
then it's can the Dolphins keep up in a shootout
with the rookie quarterback? Probably not, but I do think
(02:19:29):
most of that total is the Dolphins or the Bengals
and Burrow probably getting to the thirty point mare.
Speaker 17 (02:19:35):
I agree whole heartedly. I think the Bengals win this game.
I mean, obviously the playoffs are out of the picture,
but for all the reasons you just outlined, I think
Cincinnati wins this game, and I kind of think they
went it going away. It's unfortunate, you know what happened
last week. It's unfortunate the way the season went. But
finishing strongly. A lot of people think, well, what are
they playing for? Bench Burrow? Why are you playing Burrough? No,
(02:19:56):
you're paid to play football. You want to finish strongly.
There is something to be said for some kind of
mojo going into the next season, particularly for the players
that are going to be back. So yeah, I think
this game takes on importance, as does next week's in
the week and one with Cleveland at the end of
the season. I think they all take on importance for
things like that. You don't want to walk into a season.
So at the end of a seasons some sad sack,
(02:20:18):
trying to rebuild your entire roster. No, these are important games,
aren't they.
Speaker 45 (02:20:22):
Yeah, you definitely want to win.
Speaker 80 (02:20:24):
Out and I think for Joe Burrow specifically, it's look.
Speaker 3 (02:20:28):
These guys train all years.
Speaker 45 (02:20:30):
You're keeping your body in shape for twelve months, and
you only get seventeen games. You're only guaranteed seventeen games.
So when you miss nine of those, like Joe Burrow,
did you miss fifty percent of that? You put all
that work in and so now that you are healthy
and you are able to play, you're going to have
to rip Joe Burrow off the field for him not
to play, because that's what he mentioned that again, it's hey, look,
(02:20:53):
I'm healthy, I want to play football. It's that simple,
and I think that should be the feeling in the
Bengals facility. I want your star quarterback out there, you
want everyone out there, and yeah, you want to get
a few rookies maybe some extra playing time down a
stretch now that you are eliminated from the playoffs. But
I do think that playing Burrow over these final three
weeks and just playing guys like you are still in
(02:21:14):
the playoff race does make a lot of.
Speaker 10 (02:21:16):
Sense, so I absolutely agree with you there Ken.
Speaker 17 (02:21:17):

Tampa Bay at Carolina, both teams seven and seven, but
Tampa Bay with the advantage at this point. This is
(02:27:17):
for the fight for the NFC South Championship. Carolina is
at home and is getting three two very big one
o'clock games to keep your eye on. At four o'clock
you have Jacksonville at Denver. Denver is giving three and
a half Jacksonville is ten and four. They got a
one game lead over Houston. Houston has a four to
(02:27:38):
twenty five game today at home against Las Vegas. Houston
is giving a lot, they're giving fourteen, but straight up
and with implications, Houston is nine to five, and as
I mentioned, one back of Jacksonville. In the AFC South,
you have Pittsburgh Detroit as a four to twenty five game.

(02:28:03):
seven in this game is eight and six and right
now is eight. In a seventeen playoff race in the
National Football Conference. And then tonight Sunday Night Football, you
got New England at Baltimore, Baltimore giving one one back

one up on Buffalo in the East.

on the field. He wants to play, compete, and win.
Now the Bengals will be tested by a team that
played a physical brand of football for US threats last week,
(02:30:13):
but looking to do that for four quarters. Standing by
with today's call of the game at hard Rock Stadium,
my colleagues Dan Hood and Dave Lapham, Gentlemen, can we
borrow ten degrees?
Speaker 79 (02:30:25):
I'll tell you what We've got plenty down here in Miami,
and let's start with that lap Last week, the game
time temperature in the loss to Baltimore was ten degrees.
The wind show was minus one. It is currently seventy
nine degrees here in Miami, Florida. That's an eighty degree swing.
Based on how it feels on the body. It certainly
feels good. But could that be a problem for the
(02:30:47):
Bengals today.
Speaker 89 (02:30:48):
You know, it might be if they'd let it become one, Dan,
you know, if they let it if they concern themselves
too much with it mentally physically though, I can tell
you that doctors and trainers us when I was playing
for the Cincinnati Bengals, that your blood does stick it
in cold weather, in the viscosity, whatever of it it
(02:31:10):
does sticking up, and then you go from that cold
game down here to warm and it starts to thin out.
And that process there's no pain or anything involved. It's
just an adjustment that you have to make. And you
got to stay hydrated. That's the biggest thing in this
football game. Guys have to have plenty of water. If
(02:31:32):
you think you've had enough water, drink more. You haven't
had enough. That was the advice that was given to
us when we came down here and played after playing
in fridgid temperatures up north.
Speaker 79 (02:31:42):
How about you dropping a viscosity on the Free Hot Show.
I'm impressed. Excellent Syracuse University education. Let's talk about some
roster moves for the Bengals today. We've got good news.
Ninety minutes from kickoff. Number one T Higgins is going
to play today. Tea, of course, had concussion several weeks ago,
then more concussion symptoms the game after that. Did not
(02:32:04):
play last week. He was a full participant in practice.
On Friday, they sent him to Pittsburgh to see one
of the world's foremost concussion specialists. He signed off, everything
looks good for Tea, so Ta is back today. Additionally,
Cincinnati's best performer on defense this year. Cornerback DJ Turner
got sick yesterday, but we just watched him go through
(02:32:25):
the pregame warmups.
Speaker 17 (02:32:26):
He is active.
Speaker 79 (02:32:27):
That looks like he has recovered in twenty four hours.
Speaker 20 (02:32:29):
It does.
Speaker 89 (02:32:30):
It might be like a twenty four hour above the
twenty four hour flu virus, whatever it may be. You know,
there's obviously some reverse paristalsis that.
Speaker 17 (02:32:39):
May have gone on in the hotel room.
Speaker 89 (02:32:45):
But yeah, he didn't probably participate much of pre game
meal and it was it was a pretty good pregame
meal that the hotels put out their nice friend. But
I think he'll play. I think he'll play well. But again,
he has to stay hydrated because you know the concussion
factor as well. I mean, when your players are dealing
(02:33:06):
with concussions, the biggest thing that you have to do
is if in the heat, and you know, I mean
I got being my I get my belt wrong a
few times and practices and games, and when the heat
starts to affect you as well, that's when you start
to get a little bit dizzy. Your equilibrium starts to
get messed up a little bit, and you have to
(02:33:27):
make sure that you're drinking more water than you think
you can.
Speaker 79 (02:33:31):
The Bengals will be facing a first time starter at
quarterback for the Miami Dolphins to a Tongo vy Loa
getting benched after allowsing performance on Monday night in Pittsburgh.
Quinn Ewers, the last quarterback selected in this year's draft,
a seventh rounder out of Texas, makes his NFL starting debut.
He did play briefly in a game early this year
against Cleveland, but he'll be making his first start today.
Speaker 89 (02:33:53):
Yeah, and you know he played major conference. You know,
Texas plays big time college football look Horns. There's no
question about that. The thing is, though your defensive coordinator
Al Golden has no tape on the guy, and a
lot of times that can be uncomfortable for coaches going
into a game where at the professional level, maybe just
(02:34:17):
some preseason reps, but those are totally different than regular
season and I think that's going to be a factor.
They don't know exactly
