Speaker 1 (00:00):
Host Ken Brew on news radio seven hundred WLW.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Who left the air conditioner on?
Speaker 3 (00:07):
All right?
Speaker 4 (00:07):
Come on, no, nobody's going to get in trouble. Just
let me just step forward. Who left the air conditioner?
And what's happening after this? Looks like we're in for
a rock and roll Sunday and Monday. But that's okay.
Winter does not come on time all the time. It
just comes when it wants to. Welcome on in Sunday
morning sports talk. Kind of a weird weekend. We did
not have UC to talk about yesterday. We do not
(00:28):
have the Bengals to talk about today. Both teams had
the weekend off. One team, you see, may be poised
for a run to the Big twelve championship game. And
as for the Bengals, where we hope when they reconvene
tomorrow for their next game at Pittsburgh next weekend, they've simply.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
Recompose themselves.
Speaker 4 (00:49):
In any event, Welcome on in a lot to get
to on this day, and we've got NFL football coming
up at twelve thirty today. First game up will be
the Patriots at the Buccaneers. It's a big, big game
for both teams. Patriots a surprising team, the Buccaneers, a
team that plays really good defense and of course has
Baker Makefield who can make things up on the fly.
(01:10):
That ought to be a fun game. As for college football, yesterday,
and we'll start at the top because at number one
it's Ohio State, and Ohio State went to Purdue and
did not necessarily blow Purdue out, but they toyed with
the boiler Makers and they won thirty four to ten.
Ohio State is now nine and oh six and oh
in the Big Ten. Purdue, let's just say, fodder for
(01:33):
the rest of the Big Ten this season. Two at
eight oh to seven inside the conference. Julian Saying continues
to be a masterful quarterback. His completion percentages off the charts,
and yesterday as well, he was twenty seven of thirty three,
three hundred and three yards, a touchdown, an interception. Jeremiah
Smith is a complete gift. Ten receptions yesterday against Purdue,
(01:58):
one hundred and thirty seven yards and a touchdown, and
that was all accomplished with no Carnel Tate, who arrived
at Purdue they thought, well, maybe he might be able
to play. There was something physically wrong with him. He
went through pregame. It just didn't feel like it was right,
and so Ryan Day elected not to play Carnel Tate
(02:20):
and with that the offense excelled even more. Here is
Day after the game on that decision not to play
Carnel Tate.
Speaker 5 (02:28):
You know, when Carnell was unavailable, You know that that
certainly changed things quickly on you know, some of the
things that we had. But but it was still I mean,
for Jeremiah still have the impact he did. Not having
Carnell on the other side of the ball, it just
speaks volumes to what he does and just how impactful
he got.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
I mean, it goes without.
Speaker 4 (02:46):
Saying, yeah, Jeremiah Smith, as I said, ten receptions, one
hundred and thirty seven yards and a touchdown, and man,
I'll tell you what he and Julian saying, just have
it going. There's a zone, there's a chemistry. Not saying
it's the same, So please don't say he said what
not saying it's the same, But it's the same kind
(03:08):
of zone. You see a lot with Joe Burrow and
Jamar Chase. Jeremiah, Jeremiah Smith. He will play on Sundays
and he short likes his quarterback. This year at Ohio State.
Speaker 6 (03:21):
I say it's a very good goodness, I have to say,
I mean, it's a lot of hallward. I went into
that from this offseason spring fall Kemp as well. So
I mean, y'all just seeing a bike part of the
every day, but there's a lot of hallward of going
to that.
Speaker 4 (03:34):
Yeah, I don't know who beats Purdue. They have Ucla
next week at the Shoe and that should be short
work for the Buckeyes. This looks like it's coming down
to Ohio State and Indiana in the Big Ten Championship game,
and for a while yesterday in Happy Valley, it did
not look like it was coming down to those two
(03:54):
teams because Penn State took Indiana to the limit. Indiana
won the game twenty seven to twenty four. Indiana goes
to ten and oh seven to zero inside the Big
Ten Penn State, which of course fired its head coach
James Franklin a few weeks ago. This is a team
in limbo three and six, zero and six inside the
(04:15):
Big Ten. Fer mendo Mendoza is just a special quarterback,
a gifted quarterback, someone who has been mentioned for the Heisman,
like Jeremiah Smith and like Julie saying, Fernando Mendoza found
Omar Cooper Junior in the back of the end zone
with thirty six seconds left to go in this game,
(04:36):
and then it was all Omar Cooper Junior who toe
tapped on the back line made the reception and it
was the difference in the ball game. See Penn State
was up thirteen in the third, punted the ball with
one fifty one to go, up twenty four to twenty
and that's when Fernando Menzo Mendoza just concocted one of
(04:57):
the best best final drives the game you will ever
want to see. Here is Gus Johnson never won for
understatement on the play by play call when Cooper Junior
holding that pass from Mendoza and toe tap the baseline
of the end zone.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
Here we go.
Speaker 7 (05:15):
Mendoza, they try us out?
Speaker 3 (05:21):
Does them.
Speaker 8 (05:29):
Didn't get his foot down?
Speaker 1 (05:31):
The rolling of the touchacial hole theyear, Oh my goodness,
no line.
Speaker 8 (05:41):
In faster review, the ruling on the field.
Speaker 9 (05:43):
Is upheld touchdown on believable jove on believable touchdown pass unbelievable.
Speaker 7 (05:53):
Reception and Adiana takes a twenty six to twenty.
Speaker 4 (05:58):
Four lead leave Gus Johnson's voice cracked six octaves in
that play by play call. A very excitable announcer in
a really exciting game. Next up for Indiana is a
game at home against Wisconsin and that is this coming
Saturday at UK. They've won two in a row Auburn
last week and last night Florida UK thirty eight Florida seven.
(06:20):
The Wildcats go to four and five, two and five
inside the SEC. They had two hundred and eighty three
yards rushing. That's getting it done. Dante dow Dell seven
carries one hundred and four yards. Seth mcgallan had a
couple of touchdowns on the ground last night for the Wildcats.
Four of Florida's turnovers played large into this game, and
(06:43):
three of those turnovers were interceptions thrown by their quarterback
DJ Lagway. He was benched, didn't matter. Kentucky rolled in
an SEC win in Lexington. What a rarity. Bob Stut,
Mike Stoops, Mark Stoops after the game talking about the
win and feeling fairly satisfied.
Speaker 10 (07:07):
You know, it starts with great effort and wasn't always
pretty out there tonight, but the effort was and I
really appreciate that from our guys, because you know, that's
where it starts, with the effort, with the.
Speaker 2 (07:20):
Physicality and the toughness.
Speaker 10 (07:23):
And I thought we played really good again in all
three areas and great team victory.
Speaker 4 (07:30):
Well they played Tennessee Tech Saturday. That'll get them to
one would think their fifth win of the season, level
them off at five and five, and then we'll see
after that whether or not they become Bowl eligible. Thirty
eight to seven. Florida comes to Glexington and gets absolutely whipped. Meanwhile, locally,
Mount Saint Joe at home goes to five and four
(07:52):
forty eight to twenty over Manchester eli Aston three touchdown
catches from quarterback Jackson Schreiber and Thomas Moore College. They
came close, but it was another loss. Old Dominican came
in Ohio. Dominican came in and beat Thomas Moore College
yesterday thirty one to twenty nine. The goal ahead fuel
goal with one forty to go, a thirty yarder from
(08:12):
Old Dominican. Now in the Big twelve, you see, of
course had the night off, but this is what transpired
in the Big twelve last night, Texas Tech at home
beat BYU twenty nine to seven, Houston at Central Florida
in Orlando beat UCF thirty to twenty seven. So as
(08:33):
the sun comes up today in the Big Twelve, here
are the standings inside the conference. These are conference records.
Texas Tech on top six and one, BYU next six
and one, UC coming off of by five and one,
Houston five and two. So the road for UC is
fairly navigable and looks like maybe maybe they've got their
(08:57):
own destiny in their own hands. Arizona at UCE next Saturday,
that's a noon kick. Then then it's BYU at U.
See that that is on November the twenty second, and
then you see finishes up at TCU. That game will
be the final game of the season. Game times for
the last two games not yet out. Next week's game
(09:20):
against Arizona is a noon kick. But by and large,
this is what this is, what it means after last night,
there will be no unbeaten team in the Big Twelve.
And Cincinnati has a lot of things on its ledger,
a lot of things on its ledger that would lead
you to believe that you know their destiny is in
(09:42):
their own hands. Next three games, final three games of
the season, extremely important home against Arizona noon Saturday November
twenty second home against BYU. Have to think that would
be a night game Saturday November twenty ninth at TCU.
And then they add him up and they see which
(10:02):
teams are the top two, and those two teams play
in the Big twelve Championship. One college basketball scorer from
last night involving a local team, Tennessee welcomed in NKU
and then thrubbed the Norse ninety five fifty six final.
MKU is now one and one. We're going to get
(10:23):
to FC Cincinnati in just a bit. It was a
wild and thrilling night at TQL and we'll tell you
all about it next as we cruise on this Sunday
till twelve thirty on seven hundred WLW.
Speaker 2 (10:37):
All right, mister Penny, I'm going to show you some
images and you tell me what do you see?
Speaker 11 (10:42):
Looks like a butterfly listening to Scott's Loan Show, And.
Speaker 7 (10:45):
This one I see a rocket ship, a rocket ship.
Speaker 11 (10:48):
Yeah, blasting up for the planet sloan me see. And
this one that looks like a fish swimming in a
mountain pond. Very good, Yeah, but a fish is angry
because he's not listening to Scott Sloan.
Speaker 12 (10:59):
Scott's loan, please please listen responsibly.
Speaker 9 (11:01):
Join me Scott Sloan tomorrow morning at nine o'clock on
seven hundred WLW.
Speaker 2 (11:06):
Might be best for us to discuss some strong matheations.

you constipation with belly pain still coming back? Yeah, Mia,
our doctor figured it out. She said, it's irritable bowel
syndrome with constipation or IBSC, and Linzes could help you
get ahead of it.

Speaker 4 (13:19):
On this Sunday morning, I like this, get you moving,
maybe warm shuffles of it. Welcome back Sunday morning sports talk.
So the atmosphere at TQL Stadium last night I could
best describe as being anticipatory, uneasiness, and thoroughly repped up
(13:43):
for what became Game three between FC Cincinnati and the
Columbus Crew.
Speaker 2 (13:50):
Hell is real.
Speaker 4 (13:51):
The playoff, as they say so pretentiously in soccer derby
went down at TQL and when it was all said
and done, when the Orange and Blue smoke had cleared,
FC Cincinnati had a two to one win and a
two to one win in the series as well, and
now moves on to play Interer Miami and Messi Messi
(14:17):
is coming back to Cincinnati. Gonna have to wait two weeks. Yes,
it's another one of those international breaks for soccer. Apparently
that's what they excel at, taking all these breaks during
the season. So not next weekend, but in two weekends
you're going to get to see the conference semi finals.
It is a one and done game between Inter Miami
(14:41):
and FC Cincinnati at TQL Stadium, and we're told that
tickets are going on sale this morning at ten am,
and you can find those at fccincinnati dot com, slash
tickets or by calling five one, three nine seven seven
K I c K. But it was a thrilling night
(15:04):
last night, and I think when Jason Russell Rose scored
in the sixty third minute, I think there was a
feeling of oh no, oh no, here we go again.
The Columbus crew coach Wilfrid Nanci, who has been a
thorn in the side of the local group, the feeling was,
(15:27):
oh no, he's figured it out again. And to be
honest with you, the kind of play that Columbus had
in the second half of that game, the style of
play was completely different than what it was in the
first half, and I think it caught FC Cincinnati a
little off guard. FC Cincinnati had to make substitutions in
(15:48):
the second half it did not want to make, and
because of that, that led to the Russell Rowe goal.
But voila, as they say, not four minutes later, it
was tied at one point one, and it was off
a corner Evander took the corner, sent it out swinging
across Teenagehdebi rose to meet it, holding out the Columbus defense.
(16:14):
It bounced around and Brenner pounced on the loose ball
and put it in the back of the net to
tie this game at one to one.
Speaker 2 (16:20):
That was in the sixty seventh minute, and.
Speaker 4 (16:22):
They played on and each team had a pretty good
chance to win this thing. Neither team took advantage of
really some great opportunities until in the eighty sixth.
Speaker 2 (16:34):
Minute it was Brenner.
Speaker 4 (16:38):
Pabo Buca was also involved in this particular goal, so
was a late substitution for Pat Brennan, and that was Jabbari.
Jabari headed thought maybe he had the goal tender be
but it found its way back out to Brenner and
it was just a daft touch on his part. And
(16:59):
that was the difference to one the final in this game.
And if you were listening on the radio on Fox
thirteen sixty, you heard the call of the game from
none other than Tommy g who, like Gus Johnson at
that Indiana game.
Speaker 2 (17:16):
Tommy G he was on it.
Speaker 8 (17:19):
Between these rivals, Buka intercepts.
Speaker 16 (17:21):
Admonson couldn't decide to take a step and Pooka got
to the ball, sends it off for Japari knocks it
down trying to find Geedy Kity tried to leave it.
Speaker 2 (17:30):
Now it comes to printer A shut.
Speaker 3 (17:32):
Made of all printer A price.
Speaker 17 (17:36):
Jersey is off sit today leads two to one.
Speaker 4 (17:43):
Let's go Come on, Kevin, Come on, Kevin, get a
thought in there.
Speaker 18 (17:52):
Wow, unbelievable scenes. Let's take your old stadium. A lot
of fantas they play. For Brenner, the guy that is
the difference, said, he gets the equalising goal. Of course
prints FC Cincinnati up to one.
Speaker 2 (18:10):
Yeah, everybody talks about Lapp and Horde and and everybody
talks about Horde and the late Jim Kelly or Horde.
Now with Tony Pike, Tommy g.
Speaker 4 (18:23):
And his side kid Kevin, they're pretty they're very entertaining,
very entertaining as they were on that goal, and that
was the difference to one. Final FC Cincinnati with the win.
After the game, here was the head coach Pat Noonan,
who had to be the most relieved guy inside the stadium,
talking about his player two goals, Brenner.
Speaker 19 (18:45):
You know, there was a a period where he came
over to the sideline and was asking what the change
was going to be, if any structurally, and I and
who was coming off, and I said it was him,
and he gave me a look like, you know, you know,
please tell me you're joking. So but it was. He said,
I'm going to score another goal. So he held up
(19:10):
his end of the bargain on that one.
Speaker 2 (19:11):
Yeah, he did.
Speaker 4 (19:12):
Good thought on Brenner's part, leaving him into the game.
A lot of people thought maybe the local side exercise
some demons. Remember a couple of years ago was the
crew that knocked FC Cincinnati out of the playoffs. So
was that part of the game plan last night, coach?
Speaker 19 (19:28):
I mean maybe for others, but the goal wasn't to
win our first round series. It happened to be against Columbus.
It was a very strong team. So two years ago
is a long time ago. A lot has happened, and
you know, unless we're playing in the final game in winning,
it's always gonna feel like that. We have expectations to
be in that game and win trophies. So when that
(19:50):
doesn't happen, there will always be disappointment.
Speaker 4 (19:53):
Next up two weeks against Messi and Miami. All Right,
A lot to get to short time to get there,
break for the news and have more on this Sunday
we go until twelve thirty today. We got an NFL
doubleheader for you right here on seven hundred WLW, beginning
with the Patriots at the Buccaneers. That's at twelve thirty

Affordable Care Act tax credits.
Speaker 8 (20:53):
Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
Speaker 22 (20:55):
It's simply agreeing to maintain current funding levels. One year
extension is something many Republicans themselves have said they want.
Speaker 8 (21:03):
This on day thirty nine of the shutdown.

Ohio is going to elect a new governor next November.
Mike Dwine is term limited. Of the candidates running to
replace him, new polling is suggesting it's a tight race.
Speaker 9 (22:36):
The new survey from Bowling Green State University shows Republican
Vivik Ramaswami leading Democrat Amy Acton by just three points,
fifty to forty seven, which is within the polls four
and a half point margin of error. A separate poll
from the Ohio Federation of Teachers released earlier this week
showed Acting narrowly ahead by one point. Both polls indicate
(22:57):
that the governor's race is wide open and that independent
voters could decide the outcome. The university's research team says
Trump's overall approval in Ohio has also fallen nine points
since February, a trend that may be weighing on Republican numbers.
I'm Travis Laird and.
Speaker 20 (23:14):

Speaker 4 (25:21):
Ay nineteen near the only television ssation I didn't work
for in this town. Come on, welcome back Sunday morning
Sports Talk. Great to have you with us on the
show today. Oh Su Rolls, Indiana Thrills and you see
rests and what does it mean in the final three
(25:43):
weeks of college football's regular season. Bill Bender from Sportingnews
dot Com is going to join us. Lee Stirling has
always at ten thirty six. We have him on every
single Sunday during the NFL season. He has five games
he's convinced will be winners for you today should you
choose to invest. The Reds said this week that their
(26:04):
payroll for twenty twenty six will be exactly the same
as twenty twenty five, So how does that team get better?
Matt Snyder's CBS Sports will join us and coming up
at twelve oh six, We're here until twelve thirty and
an NFL double hitter. Garrett podellcbssports dot Com the winners
(26:27):
and losers from True Tuesday's NFL trading deadline. We'll get
into that and where the Bengals fit into all of that.
And at eleven thirty six today I will be joined
by one of the founding members of the supergroup the Eagles,
Bernie Leedden. Bernie Lenden is rejoined the group on a
(26:50):
part time basis after unceremoniously leaving the group. The whole
breakup occurred in Cincinnati when he dumped a can of
beer on Glenn Fry's head after a concert and that
was it for Bernie. But he's back and he's got
a new album out, some new music, and we'll talk
about that in his life and times with one of
the supergroups of our time, the Eagles. So we talked
(27:13):
about last night on what a big night it was
at TQL Stadium. The crowd was juiced. It couldn't have
gone any better. The excitement rained in the second half,
and it seems as though the team found its stride.
It seemed a little disorganized in the second half, but
it did seem like it found its stride. And now
(27:34):
it's on to play Messi in Miami and whenever people
find their stride, whenever soccer is involved the beautiful game.
We welcome in from the wildly popular since he post podcast,
the guru, the brains of the outfit, and that would
be our good friend Kevin Wallace. Kevin, how are you
(27:54):
on this glorious Sunday?
Speaker 27 (27:57):
Oh Ken, I am feeling God doing great and I
appreciate as always getting way too much credit for what
we do over here.
Speaker 4 (28:06):
So in the sixty seventh minute of last night's game,
Were you feeling great as well?
Speaker 27 (28:14):
That Columbus crew goal was so offside. I could not
believe that, in an era of video review, that it
was allowed to stand.
Speaker 8 (28:28):
That was absurd, And.
Speaker 27 (28:30):
I was spending so much time complaining about that with
the people I was seated with. I almost miss Brenner's equalizer.
Speaker 4 (28:39):
Well, I mean, first of all, flag boy on the sidelines,
you know, the guy that looked like he's bringing aeroplanes in.
You know what I'm talking about, right, the guy that
holds the flag of it.
Speaker 2 (28:49):
He missed it. He missed it.
Speaker 4 (28:51):
Then they go to video review and they show these
gems sitting around I guess a television set looked like
an analog TV in Dallas or someplace in Texas and
they missed it. Now, how did they miss it? How
did flag boy miss it? And I don't know who
the analyst was on the game last night, but he's
yelling and screaming this thing is offside? How did three people?
(29:13):
How did three pieces of evidence not be called into
a offside call? How does that happen in major lake soccer?
Speaker 27 (29:24):
It really is. It is a bizarre system where you're
exactly right So the video review team is based out of,
you know, somewhere in a northern suburb of Dallas, and
they are only reviewing what the broadcast cameras offer us.
They don't have an additional camera angle. There's no you know,
(29:45):
sideline view of the camera or anything like that. And
they will make a suggestion to the center referee to
re look at it, but the center referee has the
option of calling them off until them no, I'm not
going to relook at it, or I'm not going to
Maybe they can force into the monitor, but they can
(30:06):
always override the call, and in other leagues there are
automated systems that catch this stuff. This is why I
am of the opinion that the video review portion of
soccer probably just needs to go.
Speaker 21 (30:22):
Like, if it is not going to catch what are
very obviously errors, what is the point of this.
Speaker 7 (30:28):
So it has to be Yeah.
Speaker 4 (30:31):
I was gonna say, so the video gurus someplace north
of Dallas. They can suggest to the referee that he
should take a look at it. But if the referee
says no, the on field referee says no, he doesn't
have to take a look at it.
Speaker 27 (30:46):
That's my understanding essentially, at the end of the day,
the center referee makes the decision. All the video folks
can do is suggest a second look or bring them
to the monitor for a second.
Speaker 2 (31:00):
That's the point.
Speaker 4 (31:01):
What's the point, because that guy, if the guy had
if that guy now, the guy last night at least
went to video assists. But if the referee, and we
know the names of referees that would do this, if
he decides he's going to throw a temper tantrum and
just you know, get arrogant and say no, I'm not
going to do that.
Speaker 2 (31:17):
Well, and it's like.
Speaker 4 (31:19):
There may be overwhelming evidence that that would suggest that
the call was wrong. But if he refuses to look
at it, they can't They can't say, oh, you know,
you're going to look at it.
Speaker 2 (31:30):
They can't say that.
Speaker 27 (31:33):
Yeah, yeah, that At the end of the day, the
decision rests with the center referee and they can wave
them up and I will I will say in a
a small amount of giving the pro some credit here,
they have released audio of the conversation between the folks
in Dallas and the center referee. They do this occasionally,
(31:53):
and they once published one of these, like outbursts of
the center referee screaming and yelling at the video review
team that his decision's going to stand. He doesn't want
to hear it. And it was a call that I
think every fan around the league would have recognized as
having been.
Speaker 4 (32:11):
Wrong at his outright amazing. Well, Don Garber, you may
want to address that or no, maybe Garber likes that
kind of stuff.
Speaker 2 (32:19):
It's drama. Who knows.
Speaker 4 (32:22):
Maybe that plays in arena where they don't necessarily have
sold out crowds like TQL, But last night it could
have been the difference between playing on or going home.
But to the positive things here, Brenner was absolutely stellar.
It's one of the reasons why they brought him back.
I don't think there's any question about it. I thought
his second goal was was just marvelous on a number
(32:44):
of levels. Den Ka did a great job of not
going offside on that goal. It just seemed to me
that there was more, there was more flow to that
to that second half, and started out the first fifteen
to twenty minutes. I'm watching, you know what I'm saying,
what is this is? This looks like organized mayhem out here.
(33:05):
It looked nothing like the first half. Columbus had made
some additions to the roster, some changes to the roster,
and that might have had a reason why it looked
a little disjointed. But by the time this thing got
to like the seventy fifth minute, I said, Okay, they
got it. They got it figured out. Now now it's
just a question is can they get it done inside
(33:26):
the next fifteen or sixteen minutes?
Speaker 2 (33:28):
And they did.
Speaker 4 (33:29):
But Brenner certainly was the architect of all of that.
What a great reacquisition by that club.
Speaker 8 (33:36):
Oh, Brenner.
Speaker 27 (33:37):
Brenner should inspire romance in sports stands. His story is incredible,
and especially in a sports sound like Cincinnati, so many
of our of our favorites have left over the years,
usually you know, sort of cloudy circumstances, not the best
(33:59):
of terms, and Brennan had a little bit of that leaving,
but has opted to come back. And from all the
financial data that is able to be published, he is
taking a million dollar plus pay cut to come back
to Cincinnati solely to win a trophy for this team
(34:19):
that after a little bit of time away, realized he
genuinely loved and loved being a part of and his
celebration after that second.
Speaker 8 (34:28):
Goal is proof of that.
Speaker 27 (34:30):
I think if it wasn't a sold out crowd, I think.
Speaker 8 (34:34):
He might have gone full nude.
Speaker 27 (34:36):
He rips off his shirts, he rips off the sort
of sports science tracking training bra, and then he ripped
off his shorts.
Speaker 8 (34:45):
He didn't have much plussed after that.
Speaker 4 (34:47):
Now, you know, you know, you talk about romance. He
would have gone from a romance novel to a male
adventure novel probably if there wasn't a sold out crowd. Now,
and I hear what you're saying that a lot of
athletes leave this town. Some say the right thing, some don't.
But Rare is an athlete that comes back to this
town and actually says, look, I want to I want
to play here again. I like this, and oh, by
(35:08):
the way, I'm going to take a pay cut, and
then how about how about Noonan? He's going to yank
Brenner's butt out, put him on the bench in the
second half, and Brenner talks him out of it. He says,
I'm going to score a goal, and so he went
out there and scored a goal. So the memo to
Pat Noonan, if Brenner tells you something, it's probably true.
Speaker 2 (35:28):
So let's just establish that going forward.
Speaker 27 (35:30):
Right, Yeah, I got to say full credit to Noonan
last night. I know there was pressure on him. I know,
I know our podcast has applied some pressure on him.
There the the decision to pull den K and it
does sound like it was supposed to be Brenner coming out,
(35:51):
and Brenner talked him off of it, But to pull
Dank and put Jabari in looked so confusing in the moment,
and then when you go back and watch second goal,
it is because Jabbari is able to take the ball
out of the air and lay it off for Brenner.
That's what he's there for, and it was exactly what
(36:11):
this team needed. I think Jabbari looked good and it
was the right call despite it being very confusing. And
you don't like to see the you know, the big
fifteen to sixteen million dollar man come off in the
the crucial moments of the game. And bringing on a
youngster who's on loan at this point, is not going
(36:32):
to be on the team next year, and he ends
up laying the ball off for Brenner. It's it's exactly
the right call.
Speaker 8 (36:39):
Full credit to Noonan.
Speaker 27 (36:41):
And I will say too, this is ultimately the difference
between this team this year and FEC last year in
the playoffs. This year, Chris Albright was able to make
some key acquisitions in the summer. Samuel, Geidi Brenner obviously,
(37:01):
who had an amazing game last night, all come in
in the summer and are all impact players in this
game three, it's just incredible all the.
Speaker 4 (37:11):
Way around, Jabari and At, especially because of their speed.
At you know, he flies, you know, he's got those
Fred Flintstone feet. He just flies.
Speaker 2 (37:25):
You know.
Speaker 4 (37:25):
Sometimes he gets ahead of himself and he has nowhere
to go. But speed you can't teach, and speed often
wins in particularly in games like last night. So I
think Albright pushed all the right buttons in this this
summer acquisition period, and I think that's why the pressure
(37:46):
has been on Noon and he's got to make it
work on the field. I think last night was a
big game for Pat noonan.
Speaker 3 (37:52):
I really do.
Speaker 4 (37:53):
I don't like speculating on anybody's job, but I think
if that game had gone the other way, you and
I might.
Speaker 2 (37:59):
Be having a different conversation right now. Would you agree
with that?
Speaker 8 (38:04):
I think? So.
Speaker 27 (38:05):
I mean this is sort of the duality of the
Pat Noon in experience, because you look at the team,
and you all season it always looked like this team
was stuck in like second gear. You kept expecting everything
to click and for them to explode, and you know,
set scoring records. They spent all this money on the attack,
(38:28):
and it never happened. And you know, these new acquisitions
come in and sure it's gonna take them a little
bit of time to get together in mesh, but it
just never really.
Speaker 8 (38:38):
Looked like it was connecting.
Speaker 27 (38:40):
And yet when you just pause and take a step back,
they actually tied the league winners in the number of
wins this season. They were one point off of the
supporter shield race. And Pat Noonan over the last three
years has the most winningest team in MLS history over
the course of three years, out of any team. So
(39:02):
it's very weird. And then I go online and I
read some of the national pundits.
Speaker 8 (39:07):
And Matt Doyle, very very smart guy.
Speaker 27 (39:10):
Rites for Major League Soccer. He is saying, f SE Cincinnati.
Speaker 8 (39:14):
Is a genuinely bad team.
Speaker 27 (39:18):
I can't square all of these sets.
Speaker 2 (39:20):
It's the same time, No, that is the part of
this thing, for the truth.
Speaker 4 (39:25):
But as you and I both know, the most important
thing is who's standing with the trophy at the end
of the year. And if you've got an owner that's
committing money and you have a general manager that's gouring
the country to try and find or scouring the world
to try and find players that are going to help you,
the pressure then shifts to the coach because the coach
has got to get the trophy. Now, I'm not saying
(39:46):
this thing if they don't have the trophy at the
end of this year, that that's it and they're going
to blow things up. That's not what I'm saying. I'm
just saying an early exit for any coach, and it
doesn't matter what the sport is. When you've got the
kind of financial commitment that's been placed upon your franchise
(40:07):
with your players, you can't afford to go out early.
You need to keep that hardware in sight for a
long time. And that's why I say it was a
big game for him last night.
Speaker 27 (40:18):
Yeah, I would agree, And I mean a big part
of this is if they had exited in the first round. Again,
you look at the team and go, Okay, where can
we improve And as we just discussed, it's not on
the roster. This is probably the best MLS roster there's
certainly the deepest MLS roster that's ever been assembled. And yeah,
(40:43):
then you have to sort of look at the coaching staff.
Is there a shakeup that can be made there? And
it's not quite like football where you can swap out
coordinators somebody can fall on the sword for a bad
performance or something like that. It doesn't quite work that way.
And so yeah, you'd end up looking at the head
coach now going against Messy and a team that is
(41:07):
maybe maybe not playing by the same financial rules as
the rest of the league.
Speaker 2 (41:11):
I would say, no, it's should they lose.
Speaker 27 (41:18):
I think it's a it's a slightly easier bitter pill
to swallow than a third round or first shot exit
tickle of this.
Speaker 4 (41:25):
Of course, in the in the in the swinging, swirling
world of soccer, it's two weeks now as we go
on yet another international break, so we got to wait
two weeks for MESSI it's supposed to snow tonight, so
god knows what it's going to be in two weeks
when this game pops up. But nevertheless, it's messy and
I would anticipate the joint rocking. They put four up
(41:47):
on Nashville last night and won that four nil. This
team could put the ball in the back of the net.
Nashville's back line is not as good as Cincinnati's back line,
but nevertheless, we're if we want see an FC Cincinnati win,
we need to see multiple goals in that game from
FC Cincinnati. One of these one nil games that ain't
(42:08):
happening in two weeks.
Speaker 2 (42:09):
I think you're gonna see some scoring.
Speaker 27 (42:12):
Yeah, this is an exciting matchup. This is one of
the best matchups in Major League Soccer. Going back again
to that twenty twenty three season, the US Open Cup
semi final Miami versus Cincinnati was one of the best
games ever I think involving MLS teams, and this will
(42:38):
be a good one. The good news is Cincinnati weirdly
has Miami's number. They've they've played them a handful of
times since then. Cincinnati generally does much better than other teams.
For all the firepower and star power that Miami has,
they're not great at defense, and so that is something
(42:59):
that can.
Speaker 8 (43:00):
Ideally be exploited by Brenner and company.
Speaker 3 (43:02):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (43:02):
Well, they put Cincinnati put six up bottom in one
game I want to say last year, maybe two years ago.
But Miami was beaten up. They didn't have messy and
several of their other players they got messy. Now all right, Kevin, well,
when is your next podcast out the since He Post
or your other effort, the Beautiful gam When are we
(43:23):
going to hear some work out of you?
Speaker 2 (43:25):
What happens this weekend?
Speaker 27 (43:28):
Yeah, so we'll be publishing the postcast episode will come
out tomorrow morning, and then Thursdays we'll have another Cincinnati
podcast and then the World's gam As our Major League
Soccer podcast out on Thursday as well. So we try
to get a couple of shows out there every week
(43:50):

Speaker 4 (43:51):
Kevin Wallace the brains of the Outfit, he along with
his cohorts Grayson and the Chef, And as you heard,
the follow up to this one is coming out tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (44:01):
All right.
Speaker 4 (44:02):
You stay well now, Kevin, and we'll be in touch
as you well know, stay well.
Speaker 27 (44:07):
Oh thank you you two.
Speaker 8 (44:08):
Ken.
Speaker 3 (44:09):
It is a.
Speaker 4 (44:10):
Wildly entertaining podcast. If you're into the Beautiful Game, you
gotta listen to this. Gotta listen to this podcast, all right?
Coming up on nine to fifty seven. I'm late What's
new after the News? Bill Venders Sportynews dot Com OSU
rolls Indiana's Rills usc rests. As we try to see
the finish line of regular season college football, we'll talk
(44:32):
about playoffs on seven hundred WLW.
Speaker 1 (44:36):
Now News Radio seven hundred WLW presents Sunday Morning Sports
Talk with your host Ken Brew on news Radio seven
hundred WLW.
Speaker 2 (44:47):
We are here till twelve thirty. Today. We have no
Bengals game.
Speaker 4 (44:50):
Obviously, we have an NFL doubleheader and first out of
the shoot will be the Patriots at the Buccaneers. Surprising Patriots,
tenacious Buccaneers. First NFL game for us today at twelve thirty.
I consumed a lot of college football yesterday. I feel
better for it because it's better than consuming food. It
doesn't put calories on you. Now it may it may
(45:13):
wear on your psyche a little bit, and that could
affect your life later on. But nevertheless, some wildly entertaining
games yesterday, not the least of which was Indiana and
Penn State. Everybody is wondering as we weed down to
who makes the college playoffs and who does not. And
believe me, that date is in sight and it is
(45:34):
coming up quickly. As we get to that who's in,
Who's out who's looking good, who's not looking good. Let's
bring into the conversation a man who's always looking good
and someone who knows more about college football. I would
dare say than the Nick Sabins and the low Holts
of the world. That would be our good buddy from
(45:56):
the Mount Rushmore of journalists who have graduated from the
Scripts School of Broadcasting or journalism, or let's just say
he got out of Athens with a degree, is our
good buddy. Bill Bender from Sportingnews dot com. Bill, how
are you on this glorious day?
Speaker 3 (46:11):
Thanks?
Speaker 28 (46:12):
Ken, I'm wet. I'm in Canton for a lacrosse tournament,
as you know, but the weather's going to hold up.
I've got a bunch of freshman boys ready to play.
And you know what you said it that how much
did everybody's fortunes change when Omar Cooper junior for Indiana
made that incredible catch yesterday. That was unbelievable footwork. And
(46:34):
you know, the Hoosiers are for real that probably I
don't want to say clinch the playoffs spot, but they're
pretty darn close.
Speaker 3 (46:39):
Now.
Speaker 4 (46:40):
Well they got them certainly in a better position now
you right now have just released a projected playoff pairings
for the playoffs as you see it at this hour,
You've got them as the number three seed against a
Big Ten at large team. What does Indiana have to
do when your mind to climb past three and get
(47:02):
to two? Because unless Ohio State stumbles greatly, I think
they're going to be the number one seed. What does
Indiana have to do in its body of work that's
left well.
Speaker 28 (47:11):
I think they're in good position to get that three
seed because even if they were to lose the Big
Ten championship game to Ohio State, and I think that's
one in three, I do think the SEC champion right
now we have that projected as Alabama would get the
two with Texas A and M right behind them. That
Texas A and M team is pretty underrated. I really
(47:32):
believe that quarterback's awesome, Marcel Reeve's playing well, the running
game with Ruben Ellens the former five stars kicked in,
and the defense is really good around cash Is Howe.
So those are my top four. I don't think there's
much debate around that. It's where you get into, Okay,
who are the rest of the Big ten and SEC
team's going to be? And where do they fill in.
Speaker 4 (47:55):
You still have Texas Tech in this bracket. You have
them as the sixth seed, despite what happened yesterday, and
you know, conference losses among ranked teams is not really
an upset. But my point being is you've got Texas
Tech at nine to one as the sixth seeds. So
you're still, I'm guessing thinking that Texas Tech is going
(48:18):
to win the Big Twelve Championship.
Speaker 3 (48:21):
I do, but.
Speaker 28 (48:23):
As long as the quarterback stays healthy, Baron Morton, you know,
there are other teams in the Big Twelve. I think
what they showed me yesterday is that defense truly is elite.
Jacob Rodriguez had fourteen tackles. He's so good, and they've
become this kind of conversation piece around nil and you know,
obviously they're getting what they paid for. Now for the Bearcats,
(48:47):
what opens up as they beat BYU. Obviously we got
that game in a couple of weeks, and the Bearcats,
despite that loss at Utah, they have a chance to
get into the Big twelve championship game. And they're not
him by losses to Texas Tech and BYU like Utah,
so the opportunity is there, and I do think Cincinnati BYU,
(49:08):
Texas Tech of the teams to watch for a playoff
pers from that conference. And I'm not catering to the
station here, No.
Speaker 2 (49:15):
I know, I know, and I say that in all sincerity.
You never do. You're very honest.
Speaker 4 (49:20):
Arizona you see is next or this coming Saturday twelve
noon at Nippert and then BYU on the twenty second.
I have to believe that'd be a night game, particularly
if everybody holds serve until then and then they finish
at TCU. So it's a doable schedule. It's also in
their own hands. But then regardless of what they do,
(49:43):
you still think that if you see gets to the
Big twelve championship game, you think it's Texas Tech they meet.
Speaker 2 (49:52):
Am I right on that.
Speaker 28 (49:53):
Yeah, I would say that, and I would say that
Texas Tech, the Big twelve still has a better chance
for two college football playoffs than the ACC does, And
part of that was the ACC koff last night. You
have cal Louisville, you have Virginia kind of their luck
ran out a little bit, Miami with the two losses.
(50:15):
Georgia Tech still trying to bounce back from NC State.
Where's the big twelve. It's pretty straightforward to me. You know,
Texas Tech, if they take care of their business, they
will be in that game. If Cincinnati Cincinnati BYU winner
will probably play in that game. And then if you're
in position with just if Cincinnati were to win, I
(50:36):
think there would be a chance that Cincinnati and Texas
Tech could get in depending on how the SEC shakes out.
Speaker 2 (50:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (50:44):
Yeah, Because you've got one of your bubble teams is BYU.
It stands to reason that if you're if you're correct
this and this assumption, then Cincinnati would then bump BYU
and there you go with two big twelve teams.
Speaker 2 (50:56):
I mean, we'll see.
Speaker 4 (50:57):
There's a lot of football inside conferences yet to be played.
Ohio State's great, There's no question about it. It's absolutely
astounding how they keep finding these quarterbacks that can come
in and just pick it up and go with it.
Will Howard last year Julian saying this year, I don't
know what it was, twenty seven and thirty three last night.
(51:18):
I'm not good at math, as you well know. Anyone
who goes to Ohio University is not.
Speaker 2 (51:24):
But I know this.
Speaker 4 (51:25):
His completion percentage, if not the best in the country
has got to be right up there. Are you astounded
by what Saying can do and particularly the chemistry he's
got with Jeremiah Smith.
Speaker 28 (51:38):
Yeah, I mean, you know the first haack yesterday six
to six, one hundred, one hundred plus yards Jeremiah Smith,
Carnell Tate's out. The accuracy stands out. He gets the
ball out quick, and early in the season the knock was, well,
they're not throwing the ball down the field. Now look
at him. It's I've been using the phrase cheatcade with
(51:58):
Carnel Tate and Jeremiah Smith. If you had that on
a video game, you're not losing. And they're just so
well rounded. And then on top of all that, it's
just this defense that looks like I'm trying to not
use hyperbole, but like an NFL defense with loaded with
first round pick RB l Reeves, Cayden Curry, Sonny styles
(52:19):
tale downs and I mean they just don't allow much.
So they I've been using they're not untouchable. You know,
I'd like to see Alabama play them. I want to
see Indiana play them. You're going to call me crazy,
but I think Notre Dame would be an interesting matchup
with Ohio State as well, the way that they're running
the football around TJ.
Speaker 2 (52:37):
Car So.
Speaker 28 (52:38):
But that's the short list of teams that I actually
think can entertain running with Ohio State for four quarters
and making it interesting.
Speaker 2 (52:45):
I think you're crazy about Notre Dame.
Speaker 4 (52:48):
I just said that because I didn't want to disappoint you.
You talk about their defense, and you know, again, you
and I have had this conversation. I think Matt Patricia
was of every off season acquisition. I think Matt Patricia
maybe one of the real gems. I'm wondering, could Jim
Knowles do defensively what Matt Patricia has done defensively with
(53:12):
the players Matt Patricia has this season or was there
some sort of problem with Knowles and schematics and whatnot.
Speaker 28 (53:20):
Well, the schemes are different. And I've always thought, and
this sounds like Hindsight's twenty twenty type stuff, but when
you're at Ohio State, you can run an NFL kile
defense because look at their defensive line. It reminds me
of an NFL defensive run where you can get after
the pass. Or Aden McDonald has been a breakout player,
(53:40):
Kenyana Jackson, They've just got depth and they can get
after you. And then his coverage is one of the
things Steve Sarkisian said after Week one is Matt Patricia's
so good at disguising coverages. And then you're thinking, well, yeah,
he spent years trying to disguise coverages for Drew Brees
and Peyton Manning and all those guys, So you know,
this guy's in coverages for a college quarterback might be
(54:02):
a little bit easier.
Speaker 3 (54:03):
I'm thinking, you've.
Speaker 4 (54:04):
Got to pick one. Julian's saying, Jeremiah Smith or Fernando
Mendoza for the Heisman. Who are you picking at this point?
Speaker 28 (54:13):
I would pick Julian saying right now, but I still
think Jeremiah Smith is the best player in college football.
And two other guys that I would put in the mix.
There's one in particular, if Diego Pavia gets Vanderbilt to
the College Football Playoff, I would strongly consider him. You know,
a ten win Vanderbilt team, even in that Texas loss,
he almost brought him back. They beat Auburn last night.
(54:36):
I get that he's older, but I think the two
guys that mean the most of their team are you know,
Diego Pavia and Haines King at Georgia Tech. But those
three that you mentioned, Smith, Mendoza and saying that's your
top three right now and ty Simpson's probably four.
Speaker 4 (54:54):
Well, I'll be very honest with you, I really like Mendoza.
I think he's got obviously a a little more seasoning
than saying has and saying just astounds me with what
he can do at his age. I just I watched
I say, Ohio State, I watched Indiana, I watched Florida
play Kentucky last night, a couple of other games in
and out. I think college football right now is it's
(55:18):
the best sport out there.
Speaker 2 (55:20):
It really is.
Speaker 4 (55:21):
I mean, I know there are NFL devotees, and I
know there's Major League Baseball crowd that thinks that's the
best sport.
Speaker 2 (55:27):
College football.
Speaker 4 (55:28):
To me, you go into a weekend and you might
have a situation where you're sure this team is going
to not only win and cover. But by the way,
are you standing out in the middle of a highway bill?
What's going on there?
Speaker 28 (55:41):
That's the half time horn, that's at halftime.
Speaker 27 (55:45):
I tried to.
Speaker 28 (55:45):
Press you, my bad, but I think.
Speaker 4 (55:50):
College football is the best sport that is out there
right now bar none.
Speaker 28 (55:55):
That horn was horn was to confirm that you were correct.
And you know what else, another sport that's making a
comeback in my eyes is college basketball. I'm loving it.
You know, I love we always love November with the team,
and I know college football is kind of mirroring that
in some ways because maybe we don't know. New stories
(56:16):
pop up, and I think you're going to have that
in college basketball. And we live in a world now
where Indiana and Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech are in the mix.
You still have the blue bloods, you still have the
Georgia's and the Alabamas, but the talentsmen dispersed a little bit.
One knock I would have on the Big Ten that
I've been hearing, and I think it is factual. The
(56:38):
bottom of the Big ten's pretty rough. The top's good.
You know, that Oregon Iowa game was really exciting. But
when you get to like fourteen through eighteen and the
Big Ten, and this is probably the consequence of having
an eighteen team league, the bottom is pretty rough, right.
Speaker 2 (56:54):
That is I know you got to go.
Speaker 4 (56:56):
You're coaching lacrosse, as you said today up an Akron,
your sons on the team We appreciate the time you've
carved out here. My only advice for you going forward
is do not overextend your middies. The minute you start
doing that and pressing them forward, you're asking for trouble.
Just take that today, but let me know if it works.
Speaker 28 (57:14):
Okay, Ken, If I can get fourteen, fifteen and fourteen
year old boys will listen to me, that would be
a victory in a sense. But I appreciate you all
the time. Thanks so much for happing me off.
Speaker 4 (57:24):
Bill bendersportingnews dot Com. Stay well, my friend, Stay well.
It is coming up on ten twenty one here in
the greater Cincinnati area. Cold They though it may be,
look at it this way. It's only going to get
rougher as the day goes on. But that's why we've
got this, the nice thermal inside sport known as radio.
(57:46):
And when we come back, Lee Sterling will stop by.
He's got five winners he's convinced will come home for
you today. Should you invest in is Wagering Insights on
seven hundred will every.
Speaker 8 (58:01):
Time I turn around, my friends at Pure Talk give
me one more.

Speaker 2 (58:08):
Steve Cropper perhaps the most well known. I give you
that just for a matter.
Speaker 4 (58:15):
Somebody ever asks you Booker t and the MG's what
where they see they can win a bar bet with that.
Several NFL games of interest today. Baltimore's at Minnesota, where
Minnesota is getting for You've got Cleveland at the Jets.
The Jets are getting one and a half in that game.
And Pittsburgh is the Sunday night game at the Chargers.
(58:37):
Chargers are giving two and a half. I don't know
if you watch ESPN. ESPN is an acquired taste because
it's all hot takes. It's all four people sitting around
a table, yelling and screaming and throwing out ideas. This
popped up on ESPN this past week. I think on
that morning show they do where Mike Greenberg urg pose
(59:01):
the question, the New York Jets now have five first
round picks over the next two drafts. Would they go
to the Bengals and say, please trade us Joe Burrow
for all five of these first round picks? And I'm
watching this and I'm saying, first of all, these people
are out of their minds. Second of all, they don't
(59:22):
know Mike Brown, and third Here's what Adam Schefter said
to all of that. I thought this was interesting.
Speaker 7 (59:27):
Well, here's what I would say to you.
Speaker 29 (59:28):
Right now, we have the New York Jets sitting here
with five first round draft picks, yes the next two years,
with the capability of doing whatever they want at the
quarterback position. We have the Los Angeles Rams sitting here
this offseason with two first round draft picks. We have
the Cleveland Browns sitting here this offseason with two first
(59:49):
round draft picks. We have maybe an extra quarterback in
San Francisco. You're raising a question about Joe Burrow. There's
questions in Arizona. We still are waity for trup or
Large to prove himself. This is a league that always
has quarterback questions. This now, as much as ever, feels
(01:00:09):
like an arms race, with teams positioning themselves to make
big moves for quarterbacks, whoever they are, whenever they are.
We saw this week that anybody can be had. We
saw that teams are willing to go nuts to get
their guy. So why is it going to stop there?
When it starts there, it's not going to stop, It's
(01:00:32):
only going to increase. And there are some teams out
there that have some major ammunition to go dangle to
make things happen.
Speaker 4 (01:00:39):
Yeah, five first round picks for Burrow? Really no, First
of all, it's Borough. I'm gotta trade him second of
all five first round picks means Mike Brown's got to
pay five first round picks. So maybe who knows. With
losing Burrough's salary, it's a wash. But why Joe Burrow
(01:01:00):
is the epicenter of this team, arguably one of the
top three quarterbacks in the league, and they're going to
trade into the Jets from five first round picks. But
on ESPN, you gotta field time. Sign for the news

of his sweeping tariffs. The Justice has heard the arguments

Ten thirty nine News Radio seven hundred WLW Welcome back.
I am ken Brew. This is Sunday Morning Sports Talk. Yes,
it is still to com the twenty twenty six Reds payroll.
We found out this week that it will not be
all that different from twenty twenty five. So how does
this team get better? Is it all shedding contracts like
(01:06:37):
Nick Martinez and Austin Hayes and will that bring some
sort of power to that red spatting order. We'll get
into that with Matt Snyder cbsports dot Com.
Speaker 2 (01:06:48):
And then in about an hour.
Speaker 4 (01:06:51):
He was one of the founding members of one of
the greatest rock and roll groups that ever came on
this planet, and Burn of the Eagles is going to
join me. Is tumultuous time with that group, then went
off on his own and then rejoin them. He's with
him right now. I think they have a residency out
in Vegas and he's up on stage for a couple
(01:07:14):
of shows, and he's got a new album out at
the right age of seventy five, that'll be at about
eleven thirty six. All right, no Bengals today, we know
that they're off. The NFL Week ten has already begun
across the pond in Berlin. The Colts are playing the Falcons,
and the Colts have a thirteen to seven lead in
(01:07:34):
the second quarter about four and a half minutes to
go in that Indianapolis trying to rebound from the loss
last week in Pittsburgh. But what about the games where
you can win some big money. He is back with
us again, as he is every single Sunday at this time.
He's our good buddy from Paramount Sports dot Com. It's
(01:07:55):
Lee Sterling. Lee, how are you on this glorious game day?
Speaker 8 (01:08:00):
Him?
Speaker 23 (01:08:00):
Great, So, maybe not so excited about my Dolphins, but
you know, been been a rough go of it, and
you know, it's tough. I mean, you're either a buyer
or seller, and unfortunately we're a seller now and have
been for most of the last twenty five years. So
hopefully better days for both of our teams.
Speaker 3 (01:08:21):
Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:08:21):
The joke up here is the Bengals are plus six
and a half against the buy this week, so I
mean it's it's tough.
Speaker 3 (01:08:28):
Bye is tough. I'm telling you good bye.
Speaker 2 (01:08:30):
I mean, we have all the temptations.
Speaker 3 (01:08:34):
Now, what's going on?
Speaker 4 (01:08:35):
You know, you know, Ravens are on the road. They're
at Minnesota today. Ravens are three and five, Vikings are
four and four. Baltimore's won two in a row late,
they got Lamar back, they got three deals done at
the deadline. Minnesota beat the Lions in Detroit last week
and JJ McCarthy looked pretty good.
Speaker 3 (01:08:53):
What do you think he did?
Speaker 23 (01:08:55):
But still through another interception and was lucky one of
the fumbles covered by their own team. Baltimore is just
I mean, they haven't been this healthy since before the year.
So great situation will play here. Lamar Jackson through four touchdowns,
only five incompletions their defense of Miami. He's just five
(01:09:15):
point four yards per play and two field goals in
that game. And Minnesota has just so many big games
coming up down the road with the Bears, Packers, Seattle.
I think it's a bad matchup. I think Baltimore is
gonna blitz Minnesota to death here.
Speaker 2 (01:09:30):
J J McCarthy might have a tough game. I like
the Ravens thirty one.
Speaker 4 (01:09:34):
Sixteen thirty one sixteen Ravens. The Ravens are on a
roll that had sent him to four and five, and
they're coming on. This is interesting Steelers and Chargers. So
the Steelers have got to go out west. They were
the unlikely winner last week with the Colts. As we know,
they for six turnovers. That's what it took to beat
the Vikings beat the Titans, but only by seven. So
(01:09:56):
I'm looking at the Chargers here at home six and
three as the Steelers team that on a lot of
those plays just came up lucky. Here you got the
Chargers giving the Steelers three.
Speaker 2 (01:10:06):
What do you think?
Speaker 23 (01:10:08):
Yeah, I think Pittsburgh is limited and they should have
there's one of those teams that should have made a
trade at the deadline and did not make a trade.
So their defense, they look the same in the uniform.
I just think they're getting old and they just got lucky.
Bus everything went their way. Still only six turnovers, only
win by seven points. Chargers traded for a I think
(01:10:30):
a top end offensive lineman.
Speaker 3 (01:10:32):
To replace Joald. I like that move.
Speaker 23 (01:10:34):
I think they're coached well and I think the receivers
starting to get some separation.
Speaker 4 (01:10:39):
Let's go with the Chargers here twenty twenty seven twenty
Chargers wenting home. Bring the Steelers back to five and four.
Now they got a big game in Florida this week.
Not onfortu Sleet where you are. But Buccaneers are six
and two, they're coming off of buy They're given two
and a half to the Patriots. The Patriots faded in
that fourth quarter.
Speaker 2 (01:10:58):
They hung on.
Speaker 4 (01:10:58):
They beat Atlanta last week largely because of a blocked
or a missed extra point. I'm just wondering, you look
at the Buccaneers, you think they're for real at six
and two and giving two and a half to the Patriots.
Speaker 2 (01:11:09):
What do you think?
Speaker 23 (01:11:11):
Well, let's take a different approach to this game. Don't
only do this, but I think the total better approach
to The Patriots play the least important game of the season,
non conference road game against a good run stopping defense.
So I think young Drake May is going to be
throwing the ball early and often. New England hasn't really
generated any kind of consistent pressure against opposing quarterbacks and
(01:11:35):
their last four wins.
Speaker 3 (01:11:36):
Get this, we're against.
Speaker 23 (01:11:37):
The thirty second, thirty, first, thirtieth and twenty eight scoring
offenses year balms away.
Speaker 2 (01:11:44):
Let's win this.
Speaker 23 (01:11:45):
Game something like thirty one to twenty eight, way over
forty eight total points.
Speaker 4 (01:11:48):
So you're saying play the number, don't. Don't necessarily your
best bet is the number. It's not the game itself.
But do you think the Bucks win thirty one twenty
it got you?
Speaker 3 (01:11:56):
Okay?
Speaker 23 (01:11:56):
Yeah, something like that when shock Naven goes the other
way but goes way over forty eight, probably by ten points.
Speaker 4 (01:12:02):
This game today with the Packers, actually tomorrow's Monday Night Football,
the Packers at home and they're having one and a
half to the Eagles. Green Bay stunned. I don't think
there's any other way to say it. By Carolina last week.
But Philadelphia is coming off of bye I know what
you're saying about teams coming off bys. They did pick
up Jalen Phillips at the deadline, good edge rusher, but
(01:12:23):
a team off to bye lee, as you and I
both know, not always the best situation.
Speaker 23 (01:12:28):
Right right, And like I said, it's only about a
forty eight percent play.
Speaker 3 (01:12:33):
Over the last decade.
Speaker 23 (01:12:34):
And I think this Philadelphia team is still with those acquisitions.
Speaker 2 (01:12:38):
The defense isn't the same.
Speaker 23 (01:12:40):
You know, they lost five guys to free agency. Green
Bay is just their doctor Jekyl.
Speaker 3 (01:12:45):
Mister Hyde.
Speaker 23 (01:12:45):
I mean one week, you know they look great, next
week bad. There's just four or five teams every year
that for half the season there's zigzag.
Speaker 7 (01:12:53):
Win a game, lose a game.
Speaker 2 (01:12:55):
Yeah, they look great a couple of weeks ago.
Speaker 23 (01:12:56):
Against Pittsburgh the second half last week Leyden egg here.
But I expect Matt Lafour and also Jordan Love come out.
I think they're going to be aggressive. His first twenty
twenty five play a chief scripts are some of the
best plays we've ever seen here. And still not in
love with this Philadelphia offense here. They've had some real
rough patches this year. Swan Berkley, I mean his debts,
(01:13:18):
he's not even in the middle.
Speaker 7 (01:13:19):
Of the league.
Speaker 3 (01:13:20):
That pour.
Speaker 16 (01:13:21):
I like green Bay here twenty seven to twenty three,
twenty seven to twenty three.
Speaker 4 (01:13:25):
Don't worry about the points. And the other thing about
green Bay is they take care of the ball.
Speaker 2 (01:13:28):
They just do. I mean they have I think three
turnovers all year.
Speaker 4 (01:13:31):
All right, we're in November at Paramount Sports Doe as
in d O. I guess it's e or H. I
don't know how it's bad November. It's not November what's
going on there right November?
Speaker 3 (01:13:43):
What it is?

Speaker 20 (01:14:27):

Speaker 2 (01:14:27):
I don't want to mix messages here.
Speaker 4 (01:14:29):
But you do football, you do basketball, you do hockey,
UFC and everything down there, don't you.
Speaker 7 (01:14:35):
You're a run a man.
Speaker 3 (01:14:36):
If we do it all, I'll tell you what we're busy.
Speaker 4 (01:14:39):
No Bengals this week, so that's good. The Lions five
and three at the Commanders three and six. The Commanders
are getting seven and a half. That's largely because Jayden
Daniels suffered that that awful arm injury last week. He's
not going to need surgery. That's good. But I don't
know what dan Quinn was thinking having him in the
game that late. Just it's just amazing why that happen.
(01:15:00):
But here they are three and six of the Commanders
and getting seven and a half at home.
Speaker 23 (01:15:05):
What do you think, walking mash Unit. I mean, everything
last year went right. They had a total one starter
out of the twenty two. I don't hope we've ever
seen that, but that's what it took for them to
get the championship game. And then they got bounced this year.
Like I said, every single week, a few players are
going down. So this is a tough situational play for
(01:15:28):
Washington because how good is Detroit and Dan.
Speaker 3 (01:15:30):
Campbell after a loss the.
Speaker 23 (01:15:32):
Last nine times nine to zero against the spread here,
So this defense, even though they're a little banged up
the offense nothing wrong with them here. They're going to
attack the soft underbelly here Washington. There's too many weapons
here for Washington to cover here in Detroit and Thika
match Saint Brian Field like totals play him over. It
(01:15:54):
seems like every single week he's getting one hundred.
Speaker 2 (01:15:56):
Plus yards here. So I just think that. So you
got to look at the rematch.
Speaker 23 (01:16:02):
Played last year, and this is the game that Detroit
got knocked out by these same Washington Commanders.
Speaker 2 (01:16:08):
So sometimes you got to land if you want to
play it.
Speaker 16 (01:16:11):
Lions big thirty eight thirteen, thirty eight to thirteen on
the road and winning in Maryland.
Speaker 2 (01:16:18):
All right, Lee, good stuff. We'll see how it all
plays out. We'll talk next week.
Speaker 8 (01:16:22):
Thanks sounds good, Thank you man.
Speaker 2 (01:16:25):
You bet rough league a week last week for Lee.
Speaker 4 (01:16:28):
He was one and four with us, did pretty well
with the rest of his picks elsewhere one and four
with us. So we'll see exactly what he does this week. Ravens,
he likes them. Thirty one sixteen at the Vikings. He
thinks the Steelers go to the left coast and get
whacked twenty seven to twenty Chargers with the win. The
line in that game is Chargers minus three, so Chargers
(01:16:48):
win and cover. Patriots at the Bucks Patriots seven and two,
Bucks six and two. Bucks are giving two and a half.
He thinks the Bucks win by three, but he thinks
The better play in this game is the total, and
he thinks it's over forty eight total? Is it forty
eight right now? He says, play over on the total.
Monday night football Packers at home against the Eagles. Packers
(01:17:12):
are giving one and a half. He says, the pack
wins twenty seven to twenty three and covers and the
Lions at the Washington Commanders today. Commanders don't have Jaden Daniels.
Lions are five and three. He says, they go to
six and three. Thirty eight thirteen final is what he says.
Commander's getting seven and a half. And obviously with that
(01:17:33):
predicted final score, points will not be a factor. There
you go, Lee Sterling. We'll let you know next week
how he did this week. It is coming up on
ten fifty on this Sunday News Radio seven hundred wl W.

Speaker 7 (01:17:58):

You bet it's true.

So the Reds are.
Speaker 4 (01:19:43):
Going to get better next season with the same payroll
they had this year. Okay, maybe no, Nick Martinez, that helps.
Austin Hayes is not coming back. That'll help what you
gonna do with the money? Eleven thirty six. He was
a founding member of one of the all time great
(01:20:05):
rock and roll groups. His name is Bertie Lennon and
his group was the Eagles. Then he left, now he's back.
Now he's got a new solo album out. We'll talk
about the Eagles and the album and all that, and
then coming up at high noon since we are here
until twelve thirty today, we'll be joined by Garrett Podell,
(01:20:26):
football writer extraordinaire from CBS Sports, The Winners and Losers
on NFL Deadline Day. Where do the Bengals fit in?
Speaking of the Bengals, they're off today. We know that
they are three and six. We know that eight games
to go. We know that. What will it take? I
know this is more of a hallucination than a dream.
(01:20:48):
What will it take to get into the playoffs? Playoffs?
Seven and one to get to ten wins in their
final eight? Can they do that six and two to
get to nine wins? Maybe they get you in. I
don't know. Depends on what happens this week. Certainly what's
left is a lot a lot of big games in
(01:21:09):
the NFL, and particularly for the Bengals, their defense has
been historically bad. Against the Steelers, they gave up three
hundred and ninety six total yards, one hundred and forty
seven on the ground. They won that one. To the
Jets they gave up five hundred and two total yards,
two hundred and fifty four on the ground, And to
(01:21:30):
the Bears five hundred seventy six total yards and two
hundred and eighty three on the ground. So the question
this week to some of the players, like what happened,
particularly in that Bears game, and particularly on that game
winning touchdown here Now Jordan Battle, who obviously did not
(01:21:54):
tackle well on that player in that game.
Speaker 17 (01:21:57):
Probably some misalignment issues, you know before the snap, you know,
I had to say me I said, just from the
team perspective, you know, from the front of the back,
you know, misalignments, you know. And then just like I said,
execute and when he just got the ball, just going
down and get him, get him on the ground, you know,
force him to kick a field up.
Speaker 3 (01:22:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:22:13):
Well apparently for him easier said than done. And miss tackles,
so many mistackles. Here's Cam Taylor Britt who certainly has
had a roller coaster adventure when he has in the
time he has spent here with the Bengals, seems to
be at the bottom of the roller coaster right now.
Speaker 31 (01:22:32):
Miss tackles, bring your legs, man, I think that's the
biggest thing with a lot of mistackles in football.
Speaker 2 (01:22:39):
One step closer to the tackle.
Speaker 31 (01:22:41):
I think, no, you can shoot it, you know, as
fast as as possible in everything, but the the RM
tackles don't work them anymore.
Speaker 2 (01:22:47):
As the NFL.
Speaker 4 (01:22:48):
Remaining schedule, next Sunday at Pittsburgh, then home against New
England seven and two team right now, then Thursday, Thanksgiving
night at Baltimore, then the following Sunday at Buffalo, then
back home against Baltimore that at Miami. Not a good
(01:23:09):
team back home against Arizona. Not a good team back
home against Cleveland. Who knows by then, there is the
sad situation of your Cincinnati Bengals on their bye week.

to elect a new governor. Mike DeWine is term limited
and of the candidates that are running to replace him,
new polling is suggesting it is a tight race.
Speaker 9 (01:26:11):
The new survey from Bowling Green State University shows Republican
Vivik Ramaswami leading Democrat Amy Acton by just three points
fifty to forty seven, which is within the polls four
and a half point margin of error. A separate poll
from the Ohio Federation of Teachers released earlier this week
showed Actin narrowly ahead by one point. Both polls indicate
(01:26:32):
that the governor's race is wide open and that independent
voters could decide the outcome. The university's research team says
Trump's overall approval in Ohio has also fallen nine points
since February, a trend that may be weighing on Republican numbers.
I'm Travis Lair.

Speaker 4 (01:27:59):
Hey, welcome on into the eleven o'clock hour. We got
a bonus half hour coming up at noon. No Bengals,
so we're leading into NFL football.
Speaker 2 (01:28:10):
Got a double header.
Speaker 4 (01:28:11):
First game up is the Patriots against the Buccaneers. Yeah,
it's a big game now. You got the Patriots at
seven and two, the Buccaneers at six and two. Bucks
coming off of buye. You already heard in that game
that Lee Stirling says he thinks the Bucks are going
to win. His projected final score is thirty one to
(01:28:31):
twenty eight. The line is Bucks minus two and a half,
but he says the better play is the number in
that game play the total and play over. NFL is
already underway today. They're at halftime in Berlin as the
NFL seeks to expand its tentacles around the world, and
the Falcons have a fourteen to thirteen lead on the Colts.
(01:28:53):
Falcons at three and five in that game, and the
Colts enter that game at seven and two to There
you go, so baseball is over. The seventh game of
the World Series was just absolutely spectacular. The whole series
was just spectacular between the Toronto Blue Jays and the
LA Dodgers. The Dodgers won it, and one would think
(01:29:14):
that as you look ahead to twenty twenty six, the
Dodgers would be the favorite to win it all again.
I mean, the Dodgers are the Dodgers. It's not an
elevenvel playing field in Major League Baseball. There's no salary
cap in Major League Baseball. You get fined a quote
unquote luxury tax if you spend too much, but you
can feel free to spend whatever you want.
Speaker 3 (01:29:37):
Now.
Speaker 4 (01:29:38):
Last year, in the twenty twenty five season, the opening
day payroll for the Reds was just under one hundred
and twelve million dollars. One hundred and twelve million dollars.
Speaker 2 (01:29:51):
The end of the year, the.
Speaker 4 (01:29:52):
Forty man payroll was one hundred and sixteen point one
million dollars. Let's compare that to on the Reds were
free spenders, it seemed like, and that was all the
way back in twenty nineteen when they spent on their
(01:30:12):
opening day twenty six man payroll one hundred and twenty
six million, six hundred and seventy three thousand, two hundred
and fourteen dollars.
Speaker 2 (01:30:22):
And that was middle of the pack.
Speaker 4 (01:30:23):
That was the fifteenth That was the fifteenth biggest payroll
in Major League Baseball that year. But this week Nick Crawler,
general manager, said, well, you know, we're probably going to
spend about the same amount of money we spent last year. Again,
last year on their opening day payroll was just a
hair under one hundred and twelve million. At the end
(01:30:46):
of the year, it was one sixteen point one that's
the entire forty man so there were fourteen other players
factored into that. But let's let's keep it to the
opening day payroll. One hundred and eleven, nine hundred and
ninety six six thousand, eight hundred and thirty three was
the opening day payroll in twenty twenty four they had
(01:31:09):
Nick Martinez, it would seem like Nick Martinez and his
twenty million dollar contract is going elsewhere. Already, Austin Hayes
has had his option declined. If they kept him it
would be twelve million dollars. Next year, Brady Singer will
enter into his final year of arbitration. He made eight
point seven five million in twenty twenty four. Key Brian
(01:31:33):
Hayes is scheduled to make seven million in twenty twenty six,
and Hunter Green is scheduled to make eight million in
twenty twenty six. Again, Brady Singer arbitration last year in
twenty five eight point seventy five million. So they don't
have a lot of overwhelming salaries on the book. But
(01:31:56):
how do they get better if they're going to pay
the same amount of money? Is it all going to
come from not signing Nick Martinez? And meanwhile, who can
you actually attract to a team that is long on promise,
terrific with starting pitching, short on delivery over the course
of the last now fourteen seasons. Standing by the way
(01:32:19):
In is a guy that knows all about it. He
has his latest power rankings out for twenty twenty six,
way too early. Red's middle of the pack, but also
somebody who understands that you only get better if you
spend money. He is Matt Snyder from cbssports dot com,
their lead baseball writer. And Matt, how are you on
this glorious Sunday.
Speaker 7 (01:32:39):
I'm very good man.
Speaker 3 (01:32:40):
How are you?
Speaker 2 (01:32:41):
Matt? I'll tell you what I am.
Speaker 4 (01:32:43):
I'm trying to cut through the hyperbole, cut through everything
to get to the truth about what the Reds may
do in this offseason. And we just had Nick Crawl
say this week that the opening day payroll is probably
going to be the same as last year's opening day payroll.
They don't have Nick Martin Tinas on the books anymore.
That helps. Austin Hayes's option was declined. That helps. But
(01:33:06):
still it would seem like it's a little bit parsimonious
for the way the game is played in this day
and age. If you open with a payroll of one
hundred and sixteen million dollars, would you agree?
Speaker 3 (01:33:17):
Yes?
Speaker 28 (01:33:18):
And I mean, look, they just made the playoffs.
Speaker 33 (01:33:20):
I know that they weren't drawing huge crowds for most
of the season, but it and it didn't get any
playoff gates. You know, like a lot of teams when
they make the playoffs, they have several playoff games at
home where they make a ton of money in those
and they can kind of throw.
Speaker 8 (01:33:37):
That back into the team.
Speaker 33 (01:33:38):
But you could also look at it as this is
kind of the time to send a little money to
make a little money because you've got some momentum here.
You made the best for the first time in a
full season for over a decade. Now's the time to
strikele the Aaron's hot and get the stand based excited
about red baseball again for more than just a little
(01:33:58):
bit of a temporary feeling. And just for me, it's
kind of glaring that you need some thunder in the
middle of this lineup. So now would be the time
to open up that pocketbook and try to capitalize and
try to make the fan base happy and bring fans
back on a more regular basis to Great American Ball Park.
Speaker 2 (01:34:21):
Well you look at their numbers.
Speaker 4 (01:34:23):
Okay, the top paid player this year is going to
be Hunter Green. He's due eight million in twenty twenty six.
Then he got Brady Singer at eight and three quarters.
He's going to arbitration, so he may jump ahead of
green Kee Brian Hayes seven million. After that, everybody is
in the six million dollars or less range that they've got.
You would think a lot of dough to play with.
(01:34:44):
I just tell the feeling they feel. Hey, we were
burned in twenty nineteen by COVID. Didn't see that coming,
and now we got the lockout most probably coming in
twenty twenty seven. Do we really want to go down
the road with long term contracts in twenty twenty six.
I mean, I've seen the this movie before here. I
think that's the way they're going to play it.
Speaker 33 (01:35:03):
Unfortunately, it's unfortunate that that's that that would be part
of the thought process, because you don't there's probably going
to be a lockout, but I don't know if it's
necessarily going to free, you know, bleed into the season much.
Speaker 7 (01:35:18):
If you're worried about.
Speaker 33 (01:35:20):
Putting something on the books there, then it seems to
me that you're very confident there's going to be a
salary cap.
Speaker 7 (01:35:25):
I don't know about that.
Speaker 33 (01:35:27):
And if there is a salary cap, it's going to
be years and years and years before it's fully implemented
because you can't logistically dive into a salary cap on
year one and say the Dodgers and the Marlins have
a similar tay role with what's already on the books.
Speaker 8 (01:35:44):
You just can't do that.
Speaker 33 (01:35:46):
And you're not going to say, hey, Padres, we're going
to give you relief for the Xander Bogarts deal, which
was insane to give him eleven years in.
Speaker 28 (01:35:53):
The first place.
Speaker 33 (01:35:54):
You can't give relief the teams for that either, So
I don't know how it would be implemented, if it
is implemented at all. So to operate your off season
after you just made the playoffs for the first time
in forever again in a.
Speaker 23 (01:36:08):
Full season, that is insanity to me.
Speaker 33 (01:36:11):
I think that they should be trying to capitalize on
the good vibes that the Red's brought to the fan
base late in the season.
Speaker 4 (01:36:19):
Well, I mean, the latest projection I saw on Kyle Tucker,
the free agent from the Chicago Cubs, eleven years, four
hundred and eighteen million dollars. I got to I got
to tell you right now, they ain't playing in.
Speaker 2 (01:36:30):
That ballpark with that dude.
Speaker 4 (01:36:32):
But you got Schwarber projected four years, one hundred and
four million. That'd be a twenty six million dollar average
annual value. That looks doable to me. I don't know
if the Phillies let him get away, but.
Speaker 33 (01:36:44):
You know that, Yeah, I was going to say, like,
if that's actually the case on Schwarber, first of all,
the Phillies will pay over that just to keep him.
Second of all, the Cubs should be diving all over
that to bring him back. But third of all, if
you can get him for that, the Reds would be crazy.
Got the hometown angle who he grew up a Red
Stan he from just up the road.
Speaker 28 (01:37:05):
Uh, you know he talked about I remember.
Speaker 33 (01:37:07):
When he was in the twenty fifteen Futures game at
Cincinnati when he talked about when he used to go
up and sit in the bleachers, up in the upper
deck and left field as a kid. Like and you're
sorely missing power in the middle of a power only
guy in the middle of the lineup. Think about the
dynamic that brings all of a sudden, you have a
guy who hits forty five to fifty home runs that
(01:37:28):
you can put behind Elie de la Cruz and the
line let him say you go friedel Elie Schwarber, Holy smokes,
All of a sudden, You've got a really scary top
three in the lineup.
Speaker 7 (01:37:39):
Yah as dynamic as anybody had.
Speaker 4 (01:37:41):
But if Schwarberg stays in Philly, let's just say he
stays in Philly at a value greater than what I
just said that now you're down to the pe Alonzos
of the world.
Speaker 7 (01:37:49):
And I still I don't want if.
Speaker 2 (01:37:52):
It's in, where does he fit in with this team?
Speaker 33 (01:37:55):
I still I think you kind of you have to
make it work. I think you shuffle. I know Stuart
looked really good at the end of the year, but
I think you have to figure maybe conspira, can Stier
go back to the outfield or something like that. And
I think Alonzo's bat where you can get forty five
to fifty home runs, and I do think you can
(01:38:16):
get him much cheaper than Schwarber. I think it's something
you have to pursue and you have to look at because,
like I said, this team so desperately needs power and
if you can get somebody like that in the middle
of this lineup, who does not seem like he's really
slowing down much, if at all. For some reason, the
Mets don't seem to really want to keep him around
(01:38:37):
long term. Okay, fine, Well, you're talking about a guy
who had thirty eight home runs and one hundred and
twenty six RBI last year. The worst year in Tad
was in twenty twenty four, and he hit thirty four
home runs.
Speaker 28 (01:38:50):
The Reds didn't have more than.
Speaker 33 (01:38:52):
I believe, twenty two from anybody last year. And now
you're going a great American ballpark. You're talking about a
forty home run guy for me, and I think you
make room for somebody like that, and you reshuffle some furniture,
even if you put guys in defensive positions where you
didn't necessarily want to put them.
Speaker 4 (01:39:10):
Yeah, I mean, and we you know, we've seen as
you mentioned that this lineup, the kids are at a
level they've kind of plateaued. A lot of these players
like Christian and Karnassi own Strand. I mean, you know
pretty much now what you're going to get out of him.
You know that there's going to be injury issues. I
think my problem with all this shuffling is can you
play keep Rian Hayes gold Glover? Can you play him
(01:39:34):
and Matt McLean in the same order, because yeah, the
best you're going to get from those two guys, it
would seem is a two for eight game, and I
don't think that's sustainable to.
Speaker 33 (01:39:43):
You, No, and I didn't. I mean, in hindsight, I
understand what they were trying to do on the trade
for Hayes, and I did wonder I might have even
said it on the show, like being freed from the pirate,
that going to a more header friendly yard and great
American ballpark maybe that would unlock a little something and
his bad And it's only a small sample of fifty
ish games or so, but like man, he's headed to
(01:40:06):
his age twenty nine season, I think we pretty much
know what he's going to be as a hitter moving forward,
and it's not a very good one. So yeah, like
I said, you've got to find ways to inject some
more power into this offense. And if that means somebody
who's a glove first guy had to sit a little
bit more, so be it.
Speaker 8 (01:40:24):
Well. Probably still a little bit.
Speaker 33 (01:40:26):
Of hope for Matt McClain, I guess because of what
we saw the first half of it in half of
a season as a rookie and then he had all
the injuries.
Speaker 27 (01:40:33):
Like only age.
Speaker 33 (01:40:35):
Twenty six next year, you probably still have to see
what you can get, but like a lot of the
other guys, and then I mean they've already been given
a pretty big, long look at the major league level.
Speaker 4 (01:40:47):
Yeah, we're chatting with Matt Sneyder cbssports dot com, your
colleague at CBS Sports.
Speaker 5 (01:40:53):
R J.
Speaker 4 (01:40:53):
Anderson had an interesting column as to names that might
be free agents and whatnot or maybe able to come
to this country. He'd listed a third basement first baseman
that I have not heard a lot about, Munataka Morikami,
who apparently is a terrific offensive player, not all that
great on defense. What do we know about him? And
(01:41:14):
could he be a wild card for the red third
basement first baseman?
Speaker 7 (01:41:18):
Yeah, I don't.
Speaker 33 (01:41:19):
That's r J's wheelhouse with us. He would know a
lot more than I would.
Speaker 8 (01:41:23):
I don't know a ton.
Speaker 33 (01:41:24):
I just clicked over to it. It looks like he
has an absolute ton of power. So yeah, if he
six home runs in twenty twenty two, So yeah, so
you're looking at but RJ put potential.
Speaker 27 (01:41:38):
Suitors Yankees, Mets daughters.
Speaker 33 (01:41:40):
So that leads me to believe that the big guns
are going to outfit somebody like the rest. But hey,
if there's availability there, you've got to do your due diligence,
maybe jump in on the bidding. It does seem like
he strikes out a ton. Yeah, he might be looking
at another Adam Dunn type. So I don't know how
much Red Stains would be excited to go back into.
Speaker 28 (01:42:02):
That lane there.
Speaker 33 (01:42:03):
Yeah, we honestly, like everybody we've talked about, I really
do think Pee Alonso might be a realistic land here,
and I do think it would work well.
Speaker 4 (01:42:15):
I know your rankings are out way too early. As
you point out power rankings. In your twenty twenty six season,
you have the Red seventeenth, which is, you know, subtly
in the middle of the pack. It's largely I think
due to their starting rotation and the depth they have there.
But if they were to get somebody that was of
the ilk of Alonso and put him in the middle
of that lineup, one would think that they would move
(01:42:38):
up in your power rankings before the season. I mean,
you got the Cubs at six, you got the Brewers
at two. I mean even there, if you just look
at the Brewers and Cubs and know that you're competing
against them for a division title, it's almost it's almost
your your responsibility as an ownership group to go out
and say, Okay, look we know these guys are good.
We got to put somebody in there that's going to
make us competitive, and for no other reason then to
(01:43:00):
climb up on Matt Snyder's twenty six, Right.
Speaker 27 (01:43:04):
The main that's the main thing.
Speaker 7 (01:43:05):
Yeah, that's the number one thing they should straight on.
Speaker 33 (01:43:08):
But look, look, they made the playoffs with eighty three wins,
and I think we get both agreed. They weren't a
very good team last year. For the most part. There
were good stretches, but they weren't a very good team,
and they still made the playoffs. Yeah, they got their
teeth kicked in, but that was against the defending champs
who ended up going on to went back to back titles.
Maybe win a few more games and get into a
(01:43:29):
playoff series where they could compete a little bit better.
Because I think that you would agree with me if
you looked at the Cubs Padres series, the Reds would
not have been out of their element in that series.
Speaker 27 (01:43:40):
So if you won a few more games.
Speaker 33 (01:43:43):
That's why I'm like, I'm just begging ownership, give Carl
some more money to spend here. Let's see what can happen.
Put some more power into the middle of that lineup.
Speaker 28 (01:43:52):
And then if you get to the playoffs.
Speaker 33 (01:43:54):
And you've got Hunter Green and then Andrew Abbott and
Nick Lodolo and three game wild Card series, and then
you have you can get Freedo and Elie de la
Cruz on base in front of somebody like pi Alonzo.
Now you've got something going. Now you can scare teams
a little bit. I would really like to see that because,
while you know, I am a Cubs fan, I grew
(01:44:15):
up going to games in Cincinnati because the grandparents, my
grandparents on my mother's side, were Red Stains and lived
in the Cincinnati area's Springfield, Ohio.
Speaker 2 (01:44:23):
Actually, there you go.
Speaker 27 (01:44:24):
So I would like to see the Reds be good.
Speaker 7 (01:44:29):
I don't do the.
Speaker 33 (01:44:29):
Thing where oh my second favorite team, I don't. I
think that's nonsense. I only have one favorite team. But
I would like to see the Reds do well. So
it does mean something to me, even if it doesn't
mean as much as the Red stand base.
Speaker 4 (01:44:41):
You and about one and a half million other people
that live in Cincinnati would love to see the Reds
do well. All right, Matt, you stay well, you know
we'll be calling and for this time. Thank you. We
appreciate your time. All right, take care, Petere Alonzo. That's interesting.
Alonzo last year made third million. There's a twenty four
(01:45:02):
million option that he controls should he want to return
to the Mets in twenty twenty twenty six two seventy
two hitter last year thirty eight home runs, one hundred
and twenty six RBIs, wars three point four. The question
really becomes is what do you do with a lot
of these players that have been in and out of
(01:45:23):
first base. I mean, you have Steer, and you've got
Stevenson who plays a little first base. Is Suth Stuart
as Joe, just as Matt just mentioned, Is South Stuart
going to be able to just transfer everything and go
out and play in the outfield?
Speaker 2 (01:45:44):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (01:45:46):
We did hear this week from Krawl that Ellie de
la Cruz is not moving to the outfield. I thought
that was interesting, But it's it's I would be shocked
if the Phillies let Schwarber get away. But who knows,
but Alonso at first base? You pluck him down there,
(01:46:06):
as as Snyder just said, You put him down there
in the middle of that order and all of a sudden,
that Red's batting order looks absolutely threatening. At that point,
you've still got problems with key Brian Hasey can't hit,
Matt McLean didn't hit last year. I understand all of that,
but at least the top four or five in that
(01:46:27):
order has the semblance of a batting order that would
be able to support the terrific starting pitching that the
Reds have. We'll see see if they belly up to
the bar for somebody really really big, or if they
get scared off. You know, lockout is coming. No, no, no,
(01:46:49):
we want to commit long term. Lockout is coming. Keep
an eye out and an antenna up. It is eleven
twenty seven standing by to join us in the next
half hour. Founding member of one of the great rock
and roll groups of all time. Bernie Leaden of the
Eagles on life and times inside that chaotic group and
(01:47:12):
what he's been up to since he's left the group.
It is all straight ahead On seven hundred WLW.
Speaker 8 (01:47:25):
Another summer is ended, and you may have noticed that
your energy is lowering. Your workouts are off.
Speaker 1 (01:47:30):
With your host Ken Brew on news Radio seven hundred WLW.
Speaker 4 (01:47:34):
This is what you call bonus coverage filling in this
half hour leading up to NFL football. We have the
first of our two games today and that would be
the Patriots at the Buccaneers. This is a good matchup.
Buccaneers are coming off the bye week. They probably will
not have their Bucky Irving, one of their top running backs,
nor will they have Chris Godwin, one of their top
(01:47:57):
wide receivers. But they aren't home. They've got a good defense,
they aren't coming off a bye, but they're also facing
a seven and two New England team that's playing very well,
so that ought to be a pretty danged good game.
As they say, no Bengals this weekend, they're on the
buy and that's a good thing because this team has
a lot of issues, a lot of issues that started
(01:48:20):
when they lost the quarterback Joe Burrow for the majority
of the season. Whether he comes back or not, who knows.
They're still saying mid December they are three and six.
One would think to make the playoffs, they would have
to get to ten wins. That means they're three and
six after nine games. There are eight games left. They
would have to go seven and one to get to
(01:48:44):
ten wins. Even if nine looks like maybe you can
get in with nine. They would have to go six
and two.
Speaker 2 (01:48:53):
Now.
Speaker 4 (01:48:53):
The saving grace for them is they still have a
lot of games left inside their division.
Speaker 2 (01:48:58):
Could also be a problem.
Speaker 4 (01:49:00):
They've got a game left with Pittsburgh out there, two
games with the Baltimore Ravens, and one game with the
Cleveland Browns, and right now the Bengals are two to
zero inside their division.
Speaker 2 (01:49:13):
But the Bengals have got problems.
Speaker 4 (01:49:14):
I mean, they gave up three hundred and ninety six
yards to the Steelers, won that game, gave up five
hundred and two total yards to the Jets. We all
know how that one went. And then gave up five
hundred and seventy six total yards to the Bears, and
we really know how that one went. And so here
we are at a point in the season where you
(01:49:37):
can't really add anybody to make you better. And even
if they wanted to, they didn't. They passed on the deadline.
They dumped Logan Wilson on the Cowboys and kept Trey hendrickson.
They didn't add anybody of any note. Their deadline deal
was acquiring Joe Flacco, which you know, let's face it,
(01:49:58):
without Flacco, this team wouldn't be very good. Yes, he's
been here for three games, and no they have not
been good as a team since he's been here. But
he's been off the charts great. So where is this
team right now? Let's turn to a man who covers
it for a living. Let's turn to a man who
is enjoying the weekend off. Let's turn to a guy
(01:50:19):
I've known for a long time. He writes for SI
dot com and he is charged with covering your Cincinnati Bengals.
It's our good friend Jay Morrison, who's stopped by to
let us have a little bit of insight with him.
And Jay, how are you in this glorious sunday?
Speaker 34 (01:50:37):
I'm doing great? Can It is a glorious day when
there is no football and he can kind of kick
your feet up and relax. No Bengals football, I should say.
Speaker 2 (01:50:43):
By weekends.
Speaker 4 (01:50:44):
By weekends, it works for not just the players, but
also the heathen media too.
Speaker 34 (01:50:49):
Right, Oh yeah, we definitely need a refresh, And like
via players, I would think the media would agree that
this buy comes at the perfect time.
Speaker 4 (01:50:57):
Well, there's a lot to get to with the Bengals,
but I want to start with the most important topic.
Speaker 2 (01:51:01):
What were you doing?
Speaker 4 (01:51:02):
What was your reaction when Si but Goora returned that
kickoff return for a touchdown at Peyton Stadium that led
to the Bobcats beating the dreaded Miami RedHawks on Tuesday night?
What were you doing and what was your reaction?
Speaker 34 (01:51:18):
My wife and I were both watching and we both
jumped off the couch and it was really exciting. I
love seeing I guess it was kind of a trick play,
but but yeah, it felt like they were Miami hadn't
scored a quarter on I hadn't scored a touchdown on
OU and eight plus quarters and they had just broke
that streak to take the lead, and it was it
was a little bit of unease, but then the kick
(01:51:40):
returned for a touchdown kind of settled us back in.
Speaker 2 (01:51:43):
Yes, it was unbelievable.
Speaker 4 (01:51:44):
I was a little surprised that the recent college football
playoff rankings did not have the Bobcats among the top twelve.
Speaker 34 (01:51:51):
Were you, Oh, incredible disrespect to me the defending MAC
champs and current first place MAC.
Speaker 3 (01:51:57):
Right now, Yeah that's bad? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (01:52:00):
Oh wild time at Athens on Tuesday night. Okay, so
look it's been overstated. I think all week on all platforms,
all media that the Bengals defense is bad, historically bad,
and I wouldn't expect much out of it the rest
of this year. But they did do some interesting things
on deadline day, Logan Wilson had run the course here
they're going with younger players at linebacker. Okay, they didn't
(01:52:23):
trade Hendrickson, and I was not surprised. I don't think
you were surprised. The old Mike Brown philosophy is you
have players in that locker room that deserve every chance
every week to have the best team possible on the
field to win every game. So Hendrickson is the best
defensive player. He will be healthy again. I was not
surprised that he stayed here. Were you?
Speaker 34 (01:52:45):
No, not at all, And you know, I was kind
of posing the question on our podcast. Even if the
team did offer a first I don't would the Bengals
have taken it because if it's a team that's doing that,
it's probably a team that's in the mid a good
chance of being a playoff team, and so the first
round pick is probably going to be down in the
mid to late twenties or maybe even the thirties. And
(01:53:08):
I just they never punt on seasons.
Speaker 3 (01:53:11):
And I do think that, regardless of how.
Speaker 34 (01:53:16):
Realistic you think it is, if they can get Trey
back and playing like himself, this defense will be.
Speaker 3 (01:53:24):
A little better. It doesn't have to be a lot
better when the office is playing the way it is
right now.
Speaker 34 (01:53:29):
If you get one more pressure, one more sack, one
more stop against the Jets and the Bears, you're five
and four right now. Is this conversation is totally different.
So I just think I don't know if it's illusional
or not, but they feel like they still have a
shot that this season's not over and they weren't going
to punt it. So I really didn't expect to see
Trey go and I didn't expect anybody to come close
(01:53:50):
to offering a first for him either. He is, he's
going to turn thirty one in less than a month,
and he's hurt right now, so that would have been
a big asking price.
Speaker 4 (01:53:57):
Yeah, I mean, I do think it's unrealistic. You're closer
to that team, but I mean, just do the math.
I mean, to get to nine wins, you got to
win six your remaining games, and I.
Speaker 2 (01:54:06):
Mean, is it doable? Has it happened?
Speaker 3 (01:54:08):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (01:54:08):
It's happened in this town, but I'm not sure how
realistic it is, and I'm not sure how realistic it
is for them to get better because you put this
up on Twitter this week. NFL mistackles leaders through week nine.
Top three are Jordan Battle, Demetrius Knight, and Gino Stone
and at number I think ninety one is Barrett Carter.
My point being is nobody practices at full speed anymore
(01:54:32):
during the season, So how do you get better at tackling.
If you're not good going into the season, chances are
you're not going to be very good in the season.
So I think that's a major problem for them getting
better defensively. How do you fix that in the middle
of the season.
Speaker 3 (01:54:47):
Yeah, I mean it's a great question.
Speaker 34 (01:54:50):
You think with Barret Carter and Demetrius Knight, it's just
its youth, but the games faster than what they're used to.
That's a lot of the bad tackling is not technique
and not actually getting guys on the ground. It is
taking bad angles and then just having a marginal chance
of getting a guy and maybe just getting an arm
on him and it goes for a mistackle. It's different
with Jordan battle. He's this is his third year, and
(01:55:13):
I think the thing that frustrats a lot of people
there is that that game against the Bears where you
have to get cls to Lovelin on the ground. He
knows they've been He's been taught since day one, and
the Bengals certainly teach it. You got to wrap up,
you got to take him to the ground. And he
goes in and just kind of throws a shoulder pop
at him and thinks he's going to knock him down.
I don't know how you get that out of guys.
If in that moment you don't elect to wrap up
(01:55:34):
and tackle, I mean, when are you ever going to
do it? And Gino Stone's in that boat too, He's
been around longer than the Jordan battle there. It's just
it's something that I don't see getting any better.
Speaker 3 (01:55:46):
And I.
Speaker 34 (01:55:48):
Don't know, I don't the defense as a whole. I
don't see it getting much better. It just is kind
of you are what you are. And last year they
turned it around, they got to the point where they
must wins. In week eleven twelve, whenever wasn't the one
on that run and lou Ayn Arimo simplified the defense
and they kind of started playing a little better. Well,
this defense is as simple as they can get right
now at our gold and they can't simplify it any further.
(01:56:10):
So it just feels like it is what it is.
I hate that phrase, but with this defense that applies.
Speaker 4 (01:56:15):
Yeah, I mean there are linebackers Carter and Night are
learning on the job. They are. There's no veteran presence
there anymore to help them in. The veteran presence that
was there apparently was not good enough. I just look
at them, and they made a decision in this offseason
to throw money at offense and try and get by
on the cheap on defense. And here we are with
(01:56:37):
all of this. I look at what they do offensively
and I marvel at it. But it's one thing to
be able to do that. It's another thing to have
to do that weeke in and week out, because you're
not going to be able to, as you well know,
Jay to put to come into every game saying we're
going to put thirty five up on this team.
Speaker 2 (01:56:56):
We're going to put forty up on this team. Yeah,
you can do it, you have to do it.
Speaker 4 (01:57:01):
I think that's why I'm looking at what's left and
saying to myself, this doesn't this doesn't look like it's
going to have a happy ending this season. But no
question about the offense, they're very good, and no question
about Flacco. He has been an absolute bound piece of money.
I'm just wondering if you think this offense can do
that every week, specifically, if it has to.
Speaker 34 (01:57:26):
I mean, it's kind of the same conversation conversation we.
Speaker 3 (01:57:29):
Have with Joe Burrow. Yeah, if he can stay healthy.
Speaker 34 (01:57:32):
I've been Joe Flacco's forty and he's already got the
sore shoulder. And but if he keeps playing and they
he gets the ball on quick and he's not getting hit,
and absolutely.
Speaker 3 (01:57:42):
I think this song, I think this offense can still
get even better.
Speaker 34 (01:57:45):
I just that's such a huge question with the guy
that's forty, and I don't know that we've seen the
last of Jake Browning. It just feels like, you know,
with Flacco being what he is, not very mobile. The
offensive line is playing better, but it's still not great.
He's going to take hits at time, and it only
takes one that the game he got hurt against the Jests,
he got hit once and that did it to a shoulder.
Speaker 3 (01:58:08):
So yeah, I.
Speaker 34 (01:58:10):
Think the potential is there for this offense to keep
playing like this, but the likelihood probably know.
Speaker 4 (01:58:16):
You know you mentioned Flaco. Hear me out on this
theory because it may not make sense, and if it doesn't,
feel free to tell me. The one thing that Joe
Burrow has never had in his time here is a
big brother. They always saddled him with younger quarterbacks or
quarterbacks that were, you know, average at best.
Speaker 2 (01:58:36):
I mean there's Jake Browning and it was Brandon Allen.
Speaker 4 (01:58:39):
I mean they were just I'm I'm if I'm running
the Bengals right now, I'm going to Flacco and saying, look,
we know you're forty. We know that you don't want
to play much longer, if any longer at all. How
about you come back next season and we'll make a
hybrid position for you. You'll be like, maybe the third quarterback,
(01:59:00):
maybe you'll be the you know, an assistant coach or whatever.
Because I think Flacco next to Burrow is a hell
of a lot better than Browning next to Burrow. Do
you think Flacco would be open to something like that.
I kind of doubt it. I do think the Bengals
will be smart to do that. But Flacco knows the
clock is.
Speaker 34 (01:59:20):
Ticking and he wants to win games, and I think
he's going to want to go somewhere where he knows
he's got a real shot to start. That's not going
to be the case here, unless you know you're kind
of banking on Joe Burrow getting hurt again. I don't
think he wants to be in that situation. So I
think he's going to try to go somewhere to like
maybe a bridge quarterback. Why are these teams. It's not
a great quarterback class coming out of college this year,
(01:59:41):
and maybe a team is looking for a veteran like him,
especially with the way he's playing now that he can
show it he can still do it. And maybe he
comes in and he's a bridge guy somewhere and he
gets one more run at it. I just I'd be surprised.
Even if they threw more money at him and he
could make somewhere else, I'd be surprised to see him
stick here in Cincinnati. I think he loves the situation,
(02:00:02):
but I think he wants to go be a starter somewhere.
Speaker 4 (02:00:06):
Yeah, all of it. By the way, Jay Morrison si
dot Com. Growler podcast is up how many times a week?
Jay with that Growler podcast, So there's three.
Speaker 34 (02:00:17):
There is the p D and Jay that we do
on Tuesday, kind of recap the game. Then we'll do
off prediction video on Friday, and then right after the
game we do the walkout and we kind of cover
everything that happened in the game. And then every now
and then there's a home game and we do a
live show before the home game. So I would say
three point five.
Speaker 4 (02:00:35):
It's a lot of work on all platforms. You can
get that on YouTube.
Speaker 34 (02:00:39):
Right, yeah, YouTube, Spotify, Apple, podcasts and wherever.
Speaker 4 (02:00:42):
You get podcasts, it's there there. You got total coverage
there from Jay Morrison. Duke Tobin survive after this year?
Speaker 2 (02:00:48):
Yes or no? What do you think?
Speaker 3 (02:00:51):
Yeah? I think so. He's as close to family as
there is with that organization.
Speaker 34 (02:00:55):
You go back all those years ago and when Paul
Brown sold Mike Brown never to see you control to
anybody outside the organization. I just if they let Duke go,
I don't know who the director of player personnel would be.
Maybe they promote Mike Posts from within, but they're never
going to go out and get a true GM and
I as bad as it is right now, I just
(02:01:17):
I'd be really surprised. Well, you know how patient Mike is,
how long he sticks with guys, And you get in
the off season and all of a sudden the hope
springs eternal and you start thinking, Okay, yeah, it's been
really bad the last couple of years, but this is
the year he's going to turn it around. This is
the year he's going to come up a good draft
and they run it back one more time. I just
that's the way I see it going.
Speaker 2 (02:01:36):
So's it's lather, rinse and repeat.
Speaker 3 (02:01:40):
I mean exactly.
Speaker 4 (02:01:41):
It's the same away for fans in this town too. Well,
all right, j Morris, and you can follow him on Twitter.
It's by Jay Morrison, and for no other reason, you
should follow him for his stat of the Jay. He
always comes up with something interesting to drop on you,
but always great. Catch it up with you, Jay, You
stay well, enjoy the weekend. I know you will, and
we'll be calling down the road. Please answer.
Speaker 3 (02:02:03):
Thanks sounds great, Thank you.
Speaker 4 (02:02:05):
Jim Cavalry coming over Western Hills. Nobody riding down to
pay Corpse Stadium. That particular option is sailed. So it
is what it is as a wise man once said,
and the defense will continue to play the players they've
been playing, and just hope they get better or practice
better or tackle better. Keep hope alive. That's all we
(02:02:29):
can do. Keep hope alive. Twelve twenty two On this
