In 1995, a computer simulation pitted the best UC and XU players against each other in a game. The results were broadcast by Marty Brennaman and Derrick Dickey on 700 WLW.

What you're about to hear is the fantasy Crosstown Shootout
between the University of Cincinnati Bearcats and the Xavier University Musketeers.
This game simulation, called Courtside Basketball, was created by Lance
Hafner Games of Nashville, Tennessee. The game was run on
the computer by Bruce Herman of Saint Petersburg, Florida. Because
different players of different eras are playing in the game,

one set of rules had to be established. All the
rules used in this game are the current NCAA rules,
including the thirty five second shot clock. The only current
rule not used is the three point goal. The three
pointer was excluded because too many of the older players
did not use it and the computer would give an
unfair advantage to those who did. The rosters in starting

lineups for tonight's game were selected by the Sports department
of seven hundred WLW with information provided by the athletic
departments of both Xavier and Cincinnati. All substitutions and coaching
decisions were made by the computer.

spanking new Queens City Dome in downtown Cincinnati. Sixty five thousand,
sixty six thousand and fifty people expected to be on
hand tonight to answer the question what if You've heard
it time and time again in the city of Cincinnati.
What if the best players from the University of Cincinnati

and the long and legendary history of collegiate basketball at
that institution, took on the best players in the history
of another fine basketball tradition rich university in Xavier. Well,
tonight we will attempt to answer that question. I'm Marty
Brenneman along with Derek Dickey. Derek, you and I have
done college basketball on television together, first time we've ever

done a radio broadcast, and I would have to think
that on paper, at least you has to be the faith.

No question about it, Marty, because of the history that
both these schools have, I think you would actually look
at the results and see that Cincinnati has more NCAA experience.

Xavier has more n experience.

Speaker 4 (03:13):
But because of the history of the UC players, some
of them going on to the NBA, you would think
that Cincinnati may have the advantage. However, whenever these teams
get together, you throw all the stats out, it doesn't matter,
You throw the ball up and then you go.

No question about that.

We've got a circus atmosphere about this game tonight, A
lot of luminaries and familiar faces on hand for this game,
and this facility.

convention center in downtown Cincinnati. Its main entrance the corner

to a moment ago about the Bearcats with their NCAA tradition,

and of course the Xavier Musketeers. The names you're going
to hear tonight, I think will evoke a lot of
fond memories for basketball fans from both of these schools.
You've got ed Jucker Derek coaching Cincinnati. You've got Pete
Gillen coaching the Xavier Musketeers. Different approach by these two guys.
You've got Jucker who coached back in the sixties, and
of course Gillan in his run at Xavier, their greatest

Well, I think Ed Jucker is probably one of the
guys that people around the city of Cincinnati look at
as a tactician, one of the guys who was responsible
for recruiting some of these outstanding players, who would also
get the guys to work hard and then harder. He
was the guy who would stay after you night to
try to become as perfect as a perfect player as
you can now. Pete Gillon, on the other hand, was

We've been waiting to find out exactly what would be
the outcome of a game like this. It's something that
people have talked about for years, and I think that
once these players get on the court, all the nervousness,
all the energy, is going to be out there. I

All right. We're set to go. Lenny Wurtz will toss
it between six foot eight inch Paul Hog and six
foot seven inch Bob Pelkington. He checks both ball clubs
and we're set to go. The balls in the air
and we're underway. As the tip is controlled by the musketeers,
Pelkington tips it off to Bob Quick. He takes a
look at the UC Manda Man defenses. He brings it

down to the left side of the floor. He takes
a look inside, nothing there, and elects to put it
up from sixteen feet away. The shot is no good
and the rebound control by Jack Kyman. He's foul by

Bob Quick wants to try to get a shot off
as quickly as he can't. We'll use that for a
while tonight. But as soon as Bob takes his shot,
he's gonna follow it. He's a great offensive rebound and
we're gonna watch him all night.

So the first fall of the night goes to Quick
and Xavier, and it'll be UC ball for the first time.
As Paul Hogan bounds to Nick Van Exell Van Xwell,
who had a great collegiate career at the University of Cincinnati,
brings it out of the back court. He looks to
the left, goes to the right side and Tony Yates.
Yates holds above the head deep along the left sideline.
He flips it off to Van Xell at the top

of the key. Van Exell passes to Oscar left baseline.
The shot from eighteen feet away, it's no good. Robertson
misses a jump shot and Kelkington does what he does best,
and that's clear out the rebound. He flips it off
to Byron Lark and Lark and out of the back court.
As he tries to get it up, theyhead the passes
picked off by Tony Yates. Yates quickly back the other

way to Van Xle. He brings it down the left,
then Excel passes to Hope and the paint. Hope no shot,
elects to kick it back out to the top of
the key and Oscar Robertson, the big o' Max's move
toward the basket and he's called by traveling by Mike Sanzier.

Oscar's going to handle the ball quite a bit for
the Cincinnati Bearcats, and I think it's going to be
important for Xavier to force him to give it up,
and once he gives it up, don't let him.

Speaker 1 (20:21):
Get it back. So Xavier gets it back on the
UC turnover one. Nothing are no score so far in
the game. Both cluffs starting off a little bit slowly.
Ralph Lee will bring it out of bounds with a
pass to Byron Lark and an excellent backcourt for the
Xavier Musketeers. Barkin dribbles down the middle of the floor
through the center jump circle. He passes back to Lee,

who quickly fires inside the Hill on the paint. The
turnaround jump shot from ten feet no good apoul call
on Tony Yates. Xavier wants to get the ball inside.

They are a very good shooting team from about sixteen
feet in. Cincinnati may be a better rebounding team, but
Xavier is going to continue to look to pound the
ball inside. Both teams are nervous early on, so we're
gonna see some mishots.

We're going to see some turnovers.

Yed High Tower made the foul call and he ruled
the tyrone Hill was fouled in the act of shooting,
so he'll goes to the free throw line. He'll have
a couple of shots the first shot is up, no good,
head off the back iron, and he'll have one more coming,
still scoreless. Shortly into this fantasy Crosstown shootout from the
brand new Queens City Dome in downtown Cincinnati, sixty six

fifty on hand, he'll get the ball back and his
second shot is up and it's good. So Xavier breaks
the scoreless deadlock and the Musketeers go out in front
one to nothing.

Speaker 4 (21:38):
Well, watch for Ed Jucker's team to try to move
the ball around a little bit on offense.

Very patient, very methodical, but I.

Think they're going to try to use the thirty five
second shot clock all the.

Way down to about ten. You see down one nothing
and they have the ball. Paul hole Hoe gives it
off to Nick van Exel. Van Exell brings it down
the middle of the floor again. He passes to Jack Twyman,
who handles the basketball for the first time at the
top of the key, back to van Estell in the
right pour court. Nick looks Hals passes across court to
Oscar Robertson. Oscar works three, puts up the two from

sixteen and he knocked it in.

Oscar's gonna use every bit of that six foot five
minutes body to try to shoot over the head of
Ralph Lee. Ralph is gonna get up in billion, but
he can't stop Oscar.

Speaker 1 (22:21):
One on one, not too many people can. Oscar makes
it two to one Bearcats and now Xavier coming back
with the ball. Pelkinson off to Ralph Lee. Lee across
the timeline, gives it up to Hill at the right baseline.
He'll pinned there, looks to give it up and does
to Byron Larkin right side twisting jump shot from fourteen
when he got to bout of the well. You have

to light the ball in the hands of Byron Larkin.

Very good in the open court, but can also penetrate
and get that shot off at will.

Larkin gives the Musketeers a three to two lead, and
now you see back on the attack. Tony Yate's across
the timeline. He surrenders the ball to Van act So
left four quart about twenty two feet away. Nick holds
it above the top of the key, puts it on
the floor, arrests the dribble and gives it up to
Tony Eh Jake dribbles right, then passes to Cliban at
the free throw line. Jack works inside one on one

with Tyrone Hill no three second call and the Xavier
bets not happy. Cliban gets a shot all from eight
feet no good rebound by Pel teams and off quickly
the Byron larking up the right side, pressure by Tony Yates,
he passes to Lee at the timeline. Lee attempts to
drive to the basket, but he's called for charging. Lenny
works a charging fowl against Ralph Lee. Good defense jarreed

Well, we talked about this in the openness.

Going to be some nervousness with both teams, so you're
going to see some turnovers. You're going to see the
guys try to continue to advance the ball and maybe
even go one on one. Savers already got their second turnover.

Speaker 1 (23:44):
You see he's turned it over one time and the
Bearcats get the ball back. Trailing three to two. Van
Exel walks it across the timeline. He gives to the
big o oscar left side, about thirteen feet away from
the basket. He works on Bob quick he back seem
he backs him. He team no look to no room
to pass. He gives it up the h Now Tony

takes a tough shot off the iron no good, and
Tyrone Hill racks it off the iron with a rebound.
He gives it up to Ralph Lee, takes it to
the right side, up past the Lark and cross court
to the left. Larkin works inside, takes it to the basket.
The shot no good, and now he rebounds and puts
it back up and in Byron. Larkin follows his own
this shot and his second deal goal to gave Xavier

Bob Quick deep in the right corner, and Quick loses
the ball out of bounds. It was slapped off of
his leg by Oscar Robertson and it's out of bouncy.

You see, well, Bob Krick is still trying to get
into the flow.

He missed the shot early, He's got a couple of fouls.
He wants to try to us things a little bit
for the Musketeers and get him on the board.

across the timeline quickly with the right end of dribble.
He passes to the right base line on Oscar Robertson
