Speaker 1 (00:02):
This is the Wichita Weekend Podcast from iHeartRadio Stations ninety
seven point nine, B ninety eight, one oh two to one,
The Bowl, Channel nine sixty three, and All one oh
seven three. I'm your host, Don Guidis. Thanks for joining us,
and welcome to the Wichita Weekend Podcast where we talk
about cool things that are happening in our city. And

(00:23):
my guests today come to us from the local Emergency
Planning Committee from Sedgwick County Sedgwick County Emergency Preparedness. We
might say we have Ann halc and Jessica Pereira. You
ladies are both in the studio with me today and
you're gonna tell us about a big old thing that's
happening September thirteenth that everyone in Wichita should know about

(00:45):
laid out for us.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
Yes, we are so excited and you want to tell
them all about it.

Speaker 3 (00:50):
Well, we are hosting our very first emergency Preparedness and
Safety Expo on Saturday, September thirteenth, from ten am to
two pm at Century two.

Speaker 1 (00:59):
XPO Emergency Preparedness Expo. Yes, have you ever had anything
like this before.

Speaker 3 (01:05):
In which ititah not that I'm aware of.

Speaker 1 (01:07):
Okay, just out of curiosity. Is there a need do
you feel for this? Obviously?

Speaker 3 (01:15):
I think our community needs to have a location and
know what their available resources are in one location. So
we've tried putting it all in one place to help
our community be more aware, more resilient, to have the
tools and resources for any emergency, not just not just
a tornado, not just you know, I hate to say
a hurricane, or but literally it could be preventing you

(01:39):
from having a fall in your home. It could be
a clean up after a disaster. It can be mental
health awareness and resources that are available to you for
mental health. So it really looks at an all hazards preparedness.
We want our community to be more safe and more aware.
There's so many things happening in society today that the

(01:59):
more we're aware and more prepared we are, the better
we can respond. I would rather our community respond than
to be reactive.

Speaker 1 (02:06):
Absolutely, Yeah, be prepared rather than have to react in
an emergency, be prepared for that emergency first and foremost,
what kind of things are going to be happening out there, Jessica, Well.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
We are going to have a community a free community event.
It's going to be packed with interactive safety demonstrations, expert panels,
and lots of different resource booths from throughout the community.
And this is all to help you and your family
to feel safe and ready in the event of a disaster.
We're going to have big trucks on display for kids,
so we don't want them to miss out on that.

(02:38):
We'll have an event bingo so you can win lots
of cool prizes while you learn about emergency preparedness in
our community.

Speaker 1 (02:44):
Okay, it's all happening Saturday, September thirteenth. That's coming up
fairly quickly, four hours ten am to two pm, Century
two Expo Hall, and it is the Sedgwate County Emergency
Preparedness Safety Expo. A whole lot of people are involved
in this, are they not?

Speaker 3 (03:03):
They are? We have I'm just going to kind of
go through our list of who's going to participate there
to help us all. We're going to have representation from
Emergency management EMS, the fire district and which top fire department,
the Sheriff's Department, which top police department. We have Rosi's
Rabbits that are coming. We've got the VFW Post thirty

(03:23):
one fifteen, we have Bubbas thirty three that's going to
help us out with some food safety. We've got Rusty
at quick Lane that's coming. We're just we have a
lot of participating businesses and opportunities for people just to
see what's there. We're excited. Evergy Energy is going to
be doing a big presentation. It's probably for me it's

(03:44):
one of the most exciting because they are bringing on
a truck on site to talk about how to be
safe with electrical and they absolutely are going to do
an electrical demonstration, so you can see. I was sharing
with everybody there's been an instance where a line goes
down in your backyard and you think nothing of it
and you go and touch the fence. Well, the fence

(04:04):
was touched by the electrical line. They'll actually show you
what to do and how to safely do it so
that you don't get hurt. They also do a presentation
that shows you what to do if lines go down
and you're stuck in your vehicle. So it's a great
opportunity just to learn some of that education that so
many times people take for granted and they think they know,
but they don't really know.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
So if you've got it fixed in your mind, if
you come to an event like this and you learn
some things and hopefully when the disaster, the emergency, whatever
strikes and you don't have time to necessarily think it's
still baked into you that you will remember what to do.
That's the hope.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
Anyway, Well, we're hoping to. This is our first year
we have prepared. The Local Emergency Planning Committee came together
and we prepared an emergency guidebook and the first five
hundred attendees at the event will get this guidebook. And
we always try and rely on the Internet or we're
always going to have access to some or we've got
our phone, but if in the event all of that

(05:03):
goes down, I've got a book now that I can
quick reference. We'll have SISA there, Department Film, Land Security,
Cybersecurity to talk about what happens if we get hacked
on the internet. So just a lot of different resources
to help in. This guidebook brings it all together. So
the first five hundred people will get one of those
books that we're handing out.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
That is excellent. That is all very valuable knowledge and
it can all be yours for free. Absolutely if you
come to the Sedgwick County Local Emergency Planning Committee's Emergency
Preparedness Safety Expo that's happening Saturday, September thirteenth, ten till
two at Century Too Expo Hall. You know, I'm thinking

(05:43):
about my own personal safety and i live just off
of thirteenth, and I've got some fairly good sized trees
that are kind of starting to blend with the power
lines along the street there, And I'm wondering, is that
my responsibility, is that the city's responsibility. Who's who's supposed

(06:03):
to be doing this stuff? And I bet I could
get that answer right there, right.

Speaker 3 (06:07):
Absolutely, we'll have resources on site to talk about that.
We also will have eight one to one there. They're
going to talk about safe digging. It's interesting to see
what people don't know and what they just I learned,
even myself, I learned that, you know, just me running
outside to drop a tree in the yard, don't drop
that tree. You have no idea what you're cutting into
or digging into.

Speaker 1 (06:27):
So well, as you can see by my shirt, I'm
a sports fan and on the on the Kansas City
Royals broadcast, they eight one one runs a ton of spots,
and I hope people pay attention because they're humorous and
they're kind of cute, but they're playing so many of them.
I don't want it to go in one eye and
out the other, you know, forgotten someday that but things

(06:50):
like that people don't think about, and everybody thinks will
never happen.

Speaker 2 (06:54):
To me, you know, but when it does happen, it's
important to have the skills and the tool necessary to
be able to respond. So one of the important pieces
of this safety expo is that we are going to
be having the Health Department and the American Red Cross
there teaching about stop the bleed, in first Aid, CPR,

(07:15):
all of those kinds of life saving tools, and those
are things that you can use in your everyday life.
You know, you could be at a sporting event and
see someone collapse, or at work and have someone come
in with a large gash on their arm, and you know,
knowing how to respond to those types of emergencies can
be the difference between life and death. And so they
can get a hold of resources at this event that

(07:39):
they can learn more about and take classes, sign up
for different opportunities to learn more about each skill that
they're interested in learning about, great opportunities.

Speaker 1 (07:50):
Great opportunities, and again can we point out it's all free, absolutely,
so come on out and learn what you can and
feel better about living in twenty five. You know these days.
I got to tell you one other quick personal story.
I got scammed in July by some people posing to

(08:13):
be from the Social Security Administration. Now, will you have
any kind of scam prevention experts going on out there?

Speaker 3 (08:19):
We will have the Department Homeland Security on site talking
about cybersecurity and preventing getting scammed, so they will be present.

Speaker 1 (08:27):
Yes, because that is top of my mind these days,
and you know, it happens, It happens, and this is
the kind of thing we can help people get around
or avoid next time, and just be smart when all
those red flags are going off, you know, when to
pay attention to go whoop nope, yep.

Speaker 3 (08:46):
We also added in in light of all of the
car accidents and the motorcycle accidents, we were fortunate enough
to have Mike Vermilion with the Wichitom Motorcycle Driving School.
He's going to be on site to try and help prevent,
help bring more awareness and knowledge to writer safety. So
there's just a lot that we want to see people

(09:07):
take advantage of and have the resources like Jessica says,
it's really just giving back to our community because when
we look at it, we talk about first responders. Yes,
we have trained and very skilled, trained first responders here
in Sedgwick County. They are phenomenal. They are a phenomenal group,
highly trained, knowledgeable, skilled. But when you look at a
car accident, or you look at any kind of incident,

(09:28):
the first responders are literally our community people. It'll be
you or I that are the first person on scene
before that ambulance gets there, before the fire department gets there.
So we want to have our community safe. We'll even
have representatives there talking about our Emergency Response Team, so
you can be certified Emergency Response Team for Cedric County.
So there will be classes that you can sign up

(09:49):
for to be part of that response crew to help
with those things.

Speaker 1 (09:55):
Will you be teaching CPR?

Speaker 3 (09:57):
There is a hands off CPR. Oh wow, hands hands only,
hands off, hands only, it's about yeah, okay, yeah, so
they will be teaching that. We also have to stop
the bleed, which is awesome because you see more and more.
It's higher utilization than it's been before because there's more
people that are safely trained on it.

Speaker 1 (10:17):
Yeah. Oh that's great, that's I'm so glad you guys
are doing this. This is going to be huge.

Speaker 2 (10:23):
We just feel that when when people know what to
do in an emergency, they're safer, calmer, and more resilient.
And the expo it's all about empowering our community with
the knowledge and tools and connections, having a great time
while doing it right.

Speaker 1 (10:36):
Absolutely, knowledge is definitely power, and you can get yourself
some knowledge and some preparation and kind of keep your
family a little bit safer this coming winter. I hate
to use the C word, but we hear it. People
are talking about, well, I don't know what COVID is
going to do this winter. Are we going to help

(10:59):
people be per paired medically as well? And we got
any kind of.

Speaker 3 (11:03):
We have the health department representatives going to be on
site as well. Okay, so just a lot of education.
It's a lot of education tools and resources. So they
know we didn't bring in vaccinations on site, okay, but
we have the resources to direct people to the correct location.

Speaker 1 (11:20):
So if you come in and you've got some questions
in your absolutely you guys can help out.

Speaker 3 (11:24):
Yes, Jessica and her team are going to be there,
so I'm excited about that. To have the health department
help with this is just absolutely amazing.

Speaker 2 (11:31):
We're just so grateful for all of the partners that
have helped participate, helped to put this on for our community.
It'll be a difference maker. I feel it's.

Speaker 1 (11:39):
Gonna be awesome. My guests today on the witch Daal

thirteenth from ten am to two pm Century two Expo Hall,
the Sedgway County Emergency Preparedness Safety Expo. And we've been

(12:45):
visiting with Ann Hauck and Jessica Pereira and we were
talking during the break Jessica, maybe there are some businesses
in Wichita that might have an interest in coming out
to this event.

Speaker 2 (12:56):
Absolutely, we'd love for organizations to join us. If you're
part of a group that focuses on safety, health or
emergency preparedness, you can register a boot for a vendor
booth by emailing PHEP at Sedgwick dot gov And it's
free to participate. And if you're bringing a big truck

(13:16):
or a vehicle, let us know. The kids absolutely love those.
And once you register you'll get all the specific details
you'll need to know for the day of the event.

Speaker 1 (13:26):
All right, Well, you know it's coming down to the wire,
but hey, there's still time. And like I say, if
you'd like to be a part of this, I think
it'd be a great place for your business to be.

Speaker 2 (13:35):
Absolutely, it's a great opportunity for you to showcase your
business and how your business helps represent safety. We're expecting
to see over one thousand members of the community there,
so we're really hoping to have a lot of great
vendors there to assist us.

Speaker 1 (13:50):
All right, men, And the message that you need to
get is there's still time. Absolutely, yes it's a little late,
but by golly, we'll still take you there.

Speaker 3 (13:58):
You go.

Speaker 1 (13:59):
Let's get that email address one more time, Jessica.

Speaker 2 (14:01):
Yes, it's pH EP. It stands for Public Health Emergency Preparedness.
Okay at Sedgwick dot gov.

Speaker 1 (14:09):
pH e P at Sedgwick dot gov. I could even
remember that one at hp at Sedgwick dot gov. And
any closing thoughts for the folks that are listening today, Well.

Speaker 3 (14:21):
The biggest thing is is just getting being present, being there.
It's a free event. We hope that you gained at
least one thing to help keep you safe, be it
from a fall, be it from cybersecurity, be it just
anything at all. It may just be even awareness that
you didn't know that those tools or resources were there.

(14:42):
You know, we're nearing into the holidays. We see a
lot of injuries with falls, with accidents, with people not
being able to manage just basic functions of daily life
sometimes as difficult. We're going to have representatives there talking
about suicide prevention and recognizing signs and symptoms. So it's
just it's a really good opportunity to see what this
community does to help keep.

Speaker 1 (15:03):
Us safe right on. And as they what's the old saying,
an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
So come get your ounce of prevention and be ready
for a safe and happy holiday season and wintertime in
twenty twenty six and all that good stuff. Just come
on out. You can't go wrong. It's happening Saturday, September thirteenth,

(15:23):

Seduate County Emergency Preparedness Safety Expo. Jessica Pereira and Halk
