Speaker 1 (00:02):
This is the Wichita Weekend Podcast from iHeartRadio Stations ninety
seven point nine, B ninety eight one two to one,
The Bowl, Channel nine sixty three and All one oh
seven three. I'm your host Don Guidas. Thanks for joining us.
And there's a hint of fall in the air as
we get ready for autumn and all the fun things
that are going to be happening in our community. And
(00:23):
our guest right now on the Wichita Weekend Podcast is
Alma Hammer from Victory in the Valley. We've got a great,
big event coming your way, an annual event on Sunday,
October nineteenth. Alma, tell us about it all right.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
We are having our thirty third annual East and West
United for Victory Walk and Survivor Celebration. This is something
we've done every year. We used to do a timed run,
but this year, once again, we're going to be doing
a fun walk. We're also going to be doing our
Survivor celebration. That's what it is to us. It's celebrating
life and those are those that have continued their uneath
(01:00):
as cancer survivors, and we're just excited each.
Speaker 3 (01:03):
And every year. It's our only annual fundraiser that we do.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
It's going to be a little bit different this year.
In past years, I know we've done it on Saturday mornings,
but this will be a Sunday midday event.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
Yes, we are changing it up this year and it's
going to be a Sunday afternoon.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
Gates will open at noon.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
Our walk is going to start at one o'clock and
then the Cancer Survivor Stroll is going to be at
two pm.
Speaker 1 (01:29):
And this is at Equity Bank Stadium right there on
the river, our beloved ballpark. All squeaky clean and a
great place to have this celebration because it's all in
one place and we can kind of keep everybody together,
and there's a lot of very touching events that are
going to be going on within the event in addition
to the walk.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
Right, yes, absolutely, And on the walk, we're going to
be walking in the stadium, So if someone doesn't feel
like they can walk the full mile or the full
two miles, then they're going to have that opportunity to
then set down wherever they need to. So it is
absolutely for everyone. It's for families. You can create a
team in memory or honor of someone that you love
(02:10):
that is currently fighting the cancer diagnosis or that you
have lost and you want to walk in memory of them.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
All Right, Well, it's a beautiful deal. I've been to
several of these in the past and it is a
it can be a really emotional time for those There's
a lot of positive things that come out of this
and a lot of good feelings that come from the
great support that Victory in the Valley provides for Wichita.
Talk a little bit about what Victory in the Valley
is all about.
Speaker 2 (02:33):
Alma, Okay, we are approaching our forty second year. We
are a local nonprofit. We help cancer patients and families
in our local area and throughout Kansas as they're going
through active treatment. We have transportation program, we have a
food box program. We also have our cancer support groups.
We help with pain and nausea, medication at doctor referrals,
(02:58):
just several services just to help.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
Extremely helpful services there and a beautiful location, if I
may say, there on East Douglas in Wichita, that fabulous
historic house that you're in.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
Yes, we love it there and we're very blessed to
have that. It is a beautiful home that's it was
built in nineteen oh six and we use every part
of it for cancer patients and families.
Speaker 1 (03:23):
Now later on this year. I know in the past
you've done a holiday open house. Is that in the works.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
That is in the works. We actually had a meeting
yesterday to just talk about those specifics. Tentatively, it's going
to be that first Friday of December. Definitely someplace you
want to.
Speaker 1 (03:38):
Be that evening, all right, I think that might be
on my birthday actually, Okay, so you know, I'll put
that on my calendars. Has something to do and maybe
stop by and see you guys, But before the holiday
open house. So what's the actual full title of the event.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
The full title is the thirty third Annual East and
West United for Victory Walk in Survivor Celebration.
Speaker 1 (03:57):
Okay, that East and West is kind of coming from
the when we used to have an East versus West competition.
We don't really do we do that anymore.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
We decided three years ago to come together and unite
the East and the West. Everybody had a lot of
fun with that, but we've come together. We're uniting the
East and West side and coming together to support cancer survivors.
Speaker 1 (04:22):
Right on. Well, that was always kind of a friendly,
fun competition anyway, it was.
Speaker 4 (04:26):
Most yes, not all that serious.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
We didn't have Well, every once in.
Speaker 4 (04:30):
A while you get some type a folks out.
Speaker 3 (04:32):
In the crowded Yes, exactly.
Speaker 4 (04:34):
Not the case here Sunday, October nineteenth, Equity Bank Stadium,
starting at noon.
Speaker 1 (04:40):
You can come after church, grab some lunch, participate, do
the walk. Should be I'm counting on beautiful weather, beautiful
fall weather, about sixty five degrees in sunshine.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
Yes, and hot dogs, hamburgers and pizzas what's going to
be served, And it'll just be a really good time
for people to come together and celebrate those cancer survivors
walking along that journey.
Speaker 1 (05:04):
Now, alma, I bet over the years you've got some
folks that have come to every single one of these walks.
Speaker 3 (05:10):
Yes, we do a.
Speaker 1 (05:11):
Single east west walk. And for those folks, we're really
excited and grateful for your participation.
Speaker 4 (05:18):
We can't wait to see you.
Speaker 1 (05:20):
But then there are some that have never been a
part of this that we'd like to invite them to
come for the very first time and see what victory
in the Valley's all about and see all the people
that are touched by your services and your assistance.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
Yes, and if you want to learn a little bit
more about Victory in the Valley, you can go to
Victoryinthevalley dot org. There's also that you can go through
our website and you can register for the race. The
registration is open and it's thirty dollars for everyone, and
you can sign up for the race. If you have
questions about or the walk. If you have questions about
(05:54):
the walk, you can give us a call at the
house at six eight two seventy four hundred. We will
answer those questions and help you with whatever you need.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
Six eighty two seventy four hundred. And we call it
a race, but that's kind of a generic term. We're
not racing.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
We are not racing and it is mentally. We had
a race for years up until three years ago. So yes,
it has been a transition to refer to it as a.
Speaker 1 (06:15):
Walk race walk that everybody can be a part of,
no matter whether you're fast slow, if you got to
take a break, it does not matter. And like we say,
we'll be contained there in the loop within the Equity
Bank Stadium.
Speaker 3 (06:29):
So it is a one or two mile fun walk.
Speaker 1 (06:32):
All right. Thirty third annual Survivors East West Walk for
Victory in the Valley. Our guest is Alma Hammer from
Victory in the Valley.
Speaker 4 (06:40):
We'll take a.
Speaker 1 (06:41):
Quick break and we'll come back with a little bit more.
This is the Wichita Weekend Podcast from iHeartRadio. Thanks for listening.

From Ascension via Christy kWh, Victory in the Valley and
iHeart Communities, welcome back to the Wichita Weekend Podcast. Our
(07:29):
guest is Alma Hammer from Victory in the Valley. We've
been talking about the thirty third annual East West Survivor
Walk and celebration that's going to be happening Sunday, October
nineteenth at Equity Banks Stadium right there on the river
and Alma. During the break, we were talking. You know,
Victory in the Valley does so much for those that
(07:51):
are diagnosed with cancer. What does it look like when
somebody is freshly diagnosed and they come to Victory House,
either through the referral of a physician or a friend,
what does that what kind of shape does.
Speaker 2 (08:05):
That take that you know, being diagnosed with cancer is
for anyone is scary. And so you know, we will
have people come to Victory House that are newly diagnosed.
They are literally leaving their oncologist's office, have just been
told that they're that they have cancer. They walking through
the doors and they're like, my oncologists sent me. I
(08:26):
don't know why I'm here, I don't know what I need,
but here I am. And so just through conversation, you know,
we set down, we take the time to talk to
patients and caregivers just how they're feeling, what's going on.
Speaker 3 (08:40):
It's more than.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
Just the free services, the financial peace for us that
we give. It's that emotional support and just through conversation,
you know, we are able to figure out what people need.
And so we just kind of we just take it
from there. And every individual is different, every cancer diagnosis
(09:02):
is different. What one person needs isn't what another person needs.
And so we just that love and that care and
that emotional support. We take that time with each individual
and we want to be there. It's our honor and
our privilege to be able to be just a small
piece of their journey.
Speaker 1 (09:21):
That connection is worth so much. And I can imagine
that if you're newly diagnosed and you really you know,
it's just a complete frontier that you've never been to before,
you've never been to this place before, that it would
be so wonderful to have some caring folks that you
can talk to just like humans, just like friends and family,
(09:44):
and kind of help you get through that because you're
not alone. You're definitely not.
Speaker 3 (09:48):
Alone, yes for sure.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
And you know sometimes people you know, you come out
of you know, just for example, you come out of
that colonoscopy and the surgeon says you have cancer. Then
you have that time frame, you have those couple of
weeks that you're trying to figure everything out and you're
being referred to an oncologist and you're talking to doctors
and you you know, this cancer is inside of you
(10:10):
and you don't know how to deal with it. You
don't know what the process looks like. And we're able
to help paint that picture and explain what that process
looks like. It looks different for everyone, but just that
from hey, you have cancer to Okay, you're starting treatment.
And so we're able to and we work closely with
the oncologists here in the Wichita area, so we're all
(10:32):
a team together helping cancer patients and families.
Speaker 1 (10:35):
Now, Elma, an event of this magnitude doesn't happen without
some wonderful, caring sponsors. And we've got some great folks
to think and give a shout out to, don't we
And some of those would be via Christie the Cancer
Center of Kansas. The Odd Squad tell us a little
bit about the Odd Squad.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
The Odd Squad is they've been doing it for years
and it is a memorial for Audrey Sparks and they
come together family friends, they're a pretty large team and
they just remembering Audrey through her cancer journey.
Speaker 3 (11:09):
She was part of Victory in the Valley.
Speaker 2 (11:11):
We helped her along her way or along her cancer journey,
and her father has been a part of Victory in
the Valley and on our board for many years.
Speaker 1 (11:20):
All right, well, that's wonderful, and of course we've also
got kWh providing some support and iHeartMedia. You're good friends
here at the radio station doing our best to help
Victory in the Valley get the word out about this wonderful,
wonderful event.
Speaker 3 (11:35):
Yes, and we appreciate each and every one of you.
Speaker 4 (11:37):
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (11:38):
Well, I would guess too. On the Victory staff, with
all of the folks that volunteer and help out with Victory,
you've got experience with every type of cancer.
Speaker 2 (11:49):
Known, you know, yes, all cancers, men, women, all ages.
And we do have a very small staff. We have
our as executive director, Unis Man, she's been with Victory
in the Valley for twenty five years, and then myself
is the volunteer coordinator and the assistant director, and then
two incredible women. We are a team together, the four
(12:13):
of us. We do have some other part time employees
as well as drivers and then in our hospitality room,
but those us core women at the office, US four.
We're there to help each and every.
Speaker 1 (12:25):
Individual running it, making it happen.
Speaker 3 (12:28):
And we do it together.
Speaker 1 (12:29):
Oh boy, three hundred and sixty five days a year
pretty much.
Speaker 4 (12:33):
Yes, wow, Well put it on your calendar now. The
thirty third annual East West Walk Fun Walk October nineteenth.
It's a Sunday afternoon starting at noon at Equity Banks
Stadium right there on the river where we play those
wonderful baseball games and we get together for fun events
(12:53):
like this walk that is going to happen Sunday, October nineteenth.
Speaker 1 (12:57):

to register and get signed up?

you're not a tech savvy person and you're like, just
