Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from News Talks.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
It'd be Chatham Cup football is the flavor of the
program now and we go to Paul Hobson out of
Birkenhead United. He's the manager of that team and this
afternoon two o'clock they take on the ghost team Central United.
It's a qyta street Paul, welcome to the program. You
were coaching these blokes when you won the Chatham Cup twice,
(00:31):
what twenty sixteen and twenty eighteen. You begetting a bit twitchy.
It's been a while between drinks, my friend.
Speaker 3 (00:39):
Yes, thank you yesterday. Yeah, every year obviously, it's always
our ambitious to try and win it. And yes I
have been here that long, believe it or not. But
it's magical, the Chatting Cup. And it's not just for
winning it, which is brilliant, but it just brings your
whole club and your whole community for that final day
(01:00):
at North Harbor Stadium. So we're in it to win it.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
And spreads right over the country. That's the beauty of
these knockout tournaments. Everyone goes in with a chance and
you just see and there are some teams that are
crawling up and other favorite teams. They get knocked out
pretty early. Didn't the defending champions go down to the
Nomad's what last round a couple of weeks ago.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
Yeah, I think they did. I think they lost a
lot of players, so we've managed to grab a few
from christ Church, so that might have added to their
demise a little bit. But yeah, yeah, it is that
you get some players some teams what you never have
the chance of playing before. So, like I say, it's
like it's magical the Channel Cup.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
I look to the game you're playing a sou afternoon,
I said, the ghost team Central United Q. They exist,
but they kind of don't, Is that right? Could you
explain that?
Speaker 3 (01:52):
Yeah? So, I mean Central will always obviously win this
competition five times. So back in the day before Auckland
City Central probably the most dominant team in New Zealand.
I'll correct me. I'm wrong at it obviously when he
came out here late nineties and yeah, so as soon
as Auckland City became, you know, out of the Summer
(02:15):
League into the Northern League, then Central United have to
I think start all over again. But yeah, so I
think they're in the non league, but I mean nothing.
We played them actually a couple of years ago and
we were hanging on after sixty minutes. So we're one
hundred percent not treating them like they're not in our league.
(02:37):
We're treating them exactly same as we would for anybody
that we play.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
Huge apologies to all the Central fans and players that
if you heard that, you're not a ghost team, but
kind of a ghost team if you will, Like ninety seven,
ninety eighth, five O seven in twenty twelve. That's that's
five championships and a reasonably short amount of time, so
huge history behind them.
Speaker 3 (03:01):
Yeah, yeah, there is.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
Yeah, does that I think count for anything on the
day or is that just something to look at on
the trophy wall.
Speaker 3 (03:09):
Yeah, yeah, I just think it's a whole different it's
a whole different team. And you know, I mean Oakland
City is they've taken over from where Central were back
in the in the nineties and early two thousands, is
like obviously the by far the most dominant team in
well in Oceania really, so yeah, a totally different kind
(03:30):
of setup. But you know, I'm sure some of these
players for Central maybe played for Oakland City back in
the day or maybe they've got you know, like the
creation Croatian community. They're all sort of linked the Oakland
City in Central So yeah, they'll be, they'll be. They'll
be out for an upset, that's for sure.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
Paul Hobson joins us as the manager or Berkenhead United
something at two o'clock history taking on Central United. The
last couple of years probably haven't covered you on glory
in the Chadam Cup. Would you be getting a bit
tints about this? You've got room to move, is that
you've got the players now, you've got the the athletes
(04:08):
to move further along than you have in the last
couple of years.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
Yeah, Yeah, I don't know, it's sort of this year. Yes,
we we're having we're having a good season so far,
and we brought a few decent players in this year
have really helped us. And I think obviously some of
the younger boys we've had around the first team that
little bit of a year year older. So yeah, we're Yeah,
(04:34):
we've like I said, like winning the winning a couple
of times on the trot was beyond our wildest dreams really,
but once you've had a little bit of a taste
put a little bit more on every single game and
you playing it because you know what the reward is
at the end and how good it is. So yeah, yeah,
always always touchy, touchy for every game anyway. Still so
(04:55):
cham Cup are not, But like I said before, Cham
Cup is a little bit special and it does bring
a little bit of extra extra nerves with it.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
You're a manager, you're supposed to be on eache, it's drops.
So what do you need to bring to the pitch
to overcome Central United? What have you planned for? You
can tell me as much as you want or as
little as possible.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
Just normal planning for a game. Nothing, nothing different, just
I think, I think if you're so called the favorites
for a game like this, just think you've got to
bring the right attitude. If our attitudes are right, and
we always whoever we play our things, we've got to
outwork the opposition. That's our number one thing. So we'll
(05:41):
be trying to bring the right attitudes and outwork the
opposition and keep our discipline. So they're the main things,
really well.
Speaker 2 (05:50):
Wishing you the best for that, Hope there's a big
crowd at q T Street. You can get the job down.
Paul Hobson, the manager of Birkenhead United up against Central
two o'clock this afternoon. Should be a good and around
three of the Chatham Cup. Thanks for your time, Paul Tears.
