All Blacks coach Scott Robertson wants to stop England's line speed in tonight's first test at Dunedin's Forsyth Barr Stadium.

The match is Robertson's first test in charge, having got the job last March.

Robertson says England are a dangerous team if given time and space.

Newstalk ZB and Gold Sport Commentator Paul Miller joined D'Arcy Waldegrave to preview the opening test of 2024.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from US Talk SEDB.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Let's Talk Rugby and why would we be talking anything else?
We joined now by Paul Miller, part of the commentary
team former All Black. As we look toward the first
game of the season, I think there's been so much print,
so much audio pollution around this. I don't know how
much more we've got to say, Paul, what can you

(00:34):
can contribute to this?

Speaker 3 (00:35):
And welcome well being down here amongst Dunedin, the Dunedin locals.
There's a there is certainly a lot of interest and
there's it's starting to build up down here. Ironically during
the week there's been a lot of English interest and
there's a lot of English supporters slowly creeping into Dunedin
during the week and obviously today it'll all be, it'll

(00:59):
all come up. The outcome will be obviously the England
All Black Test match tonight. So this certainly it's built.
It is very as building quite fast.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
I don't want to be mean and punch down on
Dunedin's accommodation issues, but I will where are they all staying?
These Englishmen? What are they staying? At a boat they
getting billeted.

Speaker 3 (01:20):
There's an excess of Bnb's bookerbatch booking dot com. I
don't know, yeah, hashtag not sponsored. But no, there's certainly
plenty of accommodation here. I mean, and you've got the
great people out of Moscow, the Tiree and out and Brighton,
all the external sort of outskirts of Dunedin, Wakawaidi, Palmerston.

(01:40):
So no plenty of plenty of room for these English
tourists coming into Dunedin for this great event which should
be a great matchup tonight.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
Yeah, really great for the entire community, for all around
the Otago region. But the game itself though, Look, I
think that the tab are fairly comfortable with All Black success.
But the pressure there of a new season, a new
coach and new captain, a number of new players, we
don't know how that's going to affect the A b's

(02:08):
doing out Paul.

Speaker 3 (02:09):
That's no pressure on Scott Robinson. But as we know
in New Zealand here and the All Blacks, it's a
unique environment to be in. Scott Robinson breeds habit, He
breeds habit and he instills that energy that you know
to a Polo too has already mentioned during the week
they have a settled nature about this all black aura

(02:31):
to them. So yes, granted they've lost a lot of experience.
We've got obviously Big Sam White Lock, Sam Cain, Aaron
Smith to name a few there that have that have
parted with with this Saw black line out since the
since the I guess the World Cup last year, but
brought in, you know, some experienced campaign as Patrick Tow
a pilot from my mind, TJ Pire Andara, you know,

(02:54):
Artie Savier, Like these guys are sort of, you know, irreplaceable.
That that's they're filling this forward. So Scott Robinson's just
kind of that glue. And to be honest as well,
he he has done his time so it's not like
he's we're bringing anyone new here to this formidable lineup
of this team. So Scott Robinson has certainly done his

(03:15):
time and he's paid his dues, so hopefully he can
bring the result tonight.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
What's going to be the main focus do you think
for the All Blacks? I know they'll probably roll out
geet your set, peace right, stay disciplined, so on and
so forth. Is there another bit of fairy dust but
a magic in there that you think might be sprinkled
from this all Black side of this unsuspecting English group.

Speaker 3 (03:36):
You've got to look at it from the English perspective.
Steve Borthwick is very analytical. He comes with a lot
of experience. Ironically, I was chatting with Sean Jensen's father,
who's Free Jensen, who actually played under Sean Jensen, played
under Steve Worswick, found it very analytical. So he's going
to bring that element to this English side. He brings

(03:57):
an expensive game. While they England have been renowned for
obviously the territory kicking game, they will probably chance around
with a bit of expensiveness as well. So so with
that in mind, England they should be respected at the
same time as obviously All Blacks are a favorites. But

(04:18):
I wouldn't think I wouldn't you know, I wouldn't count
out the England team as yet.

Speaker 2 (04:22):
Paul tell me about the joker in the pack, and
that is a Nika Amos last Tim Kelly excuse my
pronunciation of Georgia referee. Now, he's overseen the All Blacks
a couple of times. One of them was a disaster
of a defeat to Hygentina where he whistled the all
blacks off the part. Do you think he's going to

(04:44):
have an untoward presence over this fixture.

Speaker 3 (04:49):
I guess you're forecast in what may eventually happen. For
my mind, I think if if the discipline comes into it,
then that's the players that can control that themselves. So
I'm sure that Scott Robinson and both probably Steve Porter
as well for the English, have done their due diligence
instant saying well, we're with the referee that that may

(05:10):
or may not or predominantly will you pick up on
the small things not let this game flow, So they've
got to have that in the back of their mind.
We might see more of a free flowing game. As such,
we might see more of a less rock more collision,
more I guess contact within the rocky area, so there
might be sort of more of the hands off. So
it might be more of a free flowing game, but

(05:32):
initially it will be more of a territory game. So
hopefully the referee can just allow these players to express themselves,
which will I guess give the viewers a bit more
of a bitter feel of the game.

Speaker 2 (05:43):
Let's wrap it up with the player you're most keenly
looking forward to seeing who is one that you are
definitely going to keep your eyes on.

Speaker 3 (05:55):
Well, well it's not playing, but I was really keen
on seeing seen no Satti get in their wall. Of course,
nothing like a a good ball running number eight. But
I'm actually looking. I'm very interested to see how TJ
goes coming back into the all black stufter a period
of time and slotting back into the number nine, the

(06:15):
half back position. Big shoes that fill obviously with Aaron
gone now and obviously with he's got Finley Christy coming
off the bench and other experienced campaigner. But you know TJ.
From my mind, he's got all that experience. How does
he adapt and how does he know contain guess his
emotions because he's his experienced campaigner. How is he how
is he going to connect with Damion McKenzie there at

(06:37):
number ten and allow him to express himself. So for
my mind, it'll be TJ at number nine.

Speaker 2 (06:42):
And on the Paul Miller, We'll let you go, Thanks
so much for your time. Enjoy yourself like your won't
and don't let those Auckland kids kids give you too
much grief In the combox.

Speaker 3 (06:55):
No, we got our own foundations down here, mate. We're
pretty grounded. Thanks Darcy.
